A great start to Term 4!
Welcome back and a special welcome to all the new families who have joined our school community this term. We are really pleased with the attitude and enthusiasm we saw from students yesterday.
This term we continue to focus on ‘Connection & Clarity to Empower & Extend’ supporting and challenging each student to achieve to their potential. Our partnerships with parents are a key part of every student succeeding and I encourage you to make contact with your child’s teacher if you did not get the opportunity to meet at the end of last term.

P & C Meeting
Our next P & C Meeting will be held next Monday 11 October from 6:30-8pm in the studio. All parents are invited to attend.
We will discuss swimming for 2022 and I will provide an update on things happening in the school and our planning for 2022.
I hope you can join us!
Go Red for CF!
This Friday we will participate in our annual “Go Red for CF” day. Children are encouraged to wear something red (sunsafe and appropriate for an obstacle course please) and bring a gold coin donation. There is no cost for the day as local community organisations have sponsored the event.
This year we will be doing the inflatable obstacle courses again like last year. We are aiming to raise $40,000 this year with all money raised going to Cystic Fibrosis Qld. On the day, each year level will come down to the oval and will have 20 minutes on the inflatable obstacle courses. We will have an online fundraising page for you to share on social media to get sponsors to help you raise money. There will be great prizes for the top fundraisers and incentives for the kids. Here is the link for you to set up your fundraising page.
https://mango-hill-state-school.raisely.com/
Please ensure your child returns the permission form below so they can participate.
Last term our school had a School Review where four experienced principals spent four days interviewing staff, parents, students and community members.
We are excited to receive our report and read the findings, acknowledgements and suggestions for next steps so we keep improving. I have included the Executive Summary below for you to read. Thank you to all parents, students and staff members who participated.
We are busy planning facilities, resources and staffing for the 2022 school year. At this stage, we anticipate approximately 1570 students next year. We will have 8-10 classes in each year level.
If you have a child due to start Prep in 2022, please contact the office as soon as possible. Our prep interviews, information sessions, tours and transitions are happening now.
If you have any matters you would like us to consider for your child’s class placement in 2022, please complete the Class Considerations Form (below) and return to Jasmine Benfer jbenf10@eq.edu.au by Thursday 28 October.
If your child will not be returning to MHSS in 2022, could you please let us know so we can ensure our staffing and resources are as accurate as possible. Please email Kerry Muncey kmunc8@eq.edu.au with this information. Thanks for your assistance.
Have a wonderful week.
Focus of the Week
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Mental Health”. We will be consolidating this focus throughout next week.
Throughout Week 2, teachers will be teaching students about mental health. The timing of our focus aligns with Queensland Mental Health Week which is an annual event held from 9-17 October 2021. We will be celebrating the week by sharing information about mental health and wellbeing. This aims to improve community awareness and interest in mental health and wellbeing across the state.
The theme for this year is “Take Time – for Mental Health” and focuses on six simple actions we can take to improve our moods, build resilience, and boost wellbeing. These actions are to take time to
- Get Healthy
- Keep Learning
- Show Kindness
- Connect
- Take Notice and
- Embrace Nature.
As parents and carers, you play an important role in your child’s mental health
- Talk to your child about why looking after their mental health is important
- Browse through the resources on the QMHW website.

Please bring any donations to administration. Thank you in advance!

Instrumental Music News
Junior Band
It was with great excitement that the Junior Band met for the first time at the end of Term 3.
Their first job was an orientation on setting up as a band, rehearsal expectations and how to follow their conductor, Mr James. The next step was to introduce the instruments and have everyone playing notes of the scale in unison. The students did an amazing job at this and before they knew it they were given their own music folder and started to learn their first band piece called ‘March of the Romans’. By the end of this first rehearsal students were confidently playing the notes, staying in time with the beat and working as a team.
We look forward to the Junior Band performing with our other school Instrumental Music groups in our Semester 2 Music Concert later in Term 4.
Instrumental Lessons
All instrumental lessons have started back this week and the timetable has been sent to parents. Please ensure your child has this information to ensure they are able to attend their lessons.

Instrumental Music Recruitment
Over the next couple of weeks there will be information sent out to current Year 2 and Year 3 parents with regards to the Mango Hill State School Instrumental Music Program. It is imperative that any forms are returned to the school office by the stated date to ensure a fair and even recruitment process.

School Photos
A reminder our schools photos will be held in Week 3, Mon 18 October to Wed 20 October. Student envelopes will be sent home by the end of the week for new students and for students who have not yet ordered. If you require a blank student envelope and/or a sibling envelope, please pop into the office to collect. Your child needs to bring their personalised envelope on the day of their photo with either cash or your online order reference number. If you would like a sibling photo, you need to follow the same process.
The school photo timetable will be in next week's newsletter. We are still finalising this schedule. Thank you for your patience.
Students must wear formal uniform for school photo please.
Photos will be delivered to the school for distribution before the end of the year.

Term 4 in Prep
Welcome to our final term of Prep! In ten short weeks... we will be in Year 1. Can. You. Believe. It?!!
Over the term, we will start to transition all of our students to Year 1. We will do this by:
*learning how to visit the tuckshop with money at second break, to buy a treat
*learning how to navigate all the classroom organisation ourselves. Year 1s unpack their own bags and put their own things away!
*learning how to negotiate stairs and a larger playground
*meeting students who are currently in Year 1, and will play in our playground next year (our Year 1 and 2s play together).
We introduce all new things to our students slowly. Think of it more as a “drip feed” rather than a “big bang”. We’ll start to talk about moving to Year 1 and start some visits over the coming weeks. Your class teacher will share with you in their weekly wrap up.
You can help us too, families! You can help us by:
*speaking positively about the transition
*ensuring we do as many things as possible by ourselves. We still see parents carrying their child's bag into school and unpacking it for them - please allow your child to learn these important organisation skills, by giving them the opportunity to have a go! They are capable. They can do it. We just have to give them the time and the opportunity.
Tuckshop Treats!
Part of the fun at the end of Prep, is being able to take ourselves to the tuckshop to buy a treat at second break. Our teachers will use this week to practise walking to the tuckshop and going through the rules (waiting our turn, using our manners). We like our students to choose one thing to buy. Should they purchase more than one item, they find it very difficult to finish their treat and have time for some play. Use the tuckshop menu at home (found on our website), to talk through what your child might buy. Our other top tip is to please only send small amounts of money to school. Your child is learning to be responsible for their own things. They will be managing their own money and their own change.
Have a lovely week.

Welcome back!
It has been wonderful seeing all our little Year 1 and 2 friends back at school and ready to learn. They have had a fantastic start to Term 4 and are already starting to set their learning goals for writing and number.
This week students have had great fun exploring and learning about money. Students have been learning about the features of a variety of coins including shape, size, colour and the value. Providing opportunities at home and when out shopping is a great way to incidentally engage your child in learning about money in a real world context! Make it fun, engaging and in the moment.
Uniform Reminders
As you would have read in Ms Egan's earlier message, this week is uniform week. It has been great seeing all our students in full school uniform. Please continue to encourage your little people to wear their school uniform as they represent Team Mango!
Happy Snaps from 1N Teddy Bears Picnic from Term 3.

Have an excellent week.

Year 3 News
Welcome back to Term 4! It was wonderful seeing all of our students return to school with big smiles and excitement about their final term in Year 3. I have enjoyed hearing many holiday stories over the past couple of days.
From day 1, it has been great to see our students diving straight back into their learning. I have seen our students starting their poetry unit in English, money unit in Maths along with lots of number facts practice! Our teachers have been amazed by the knowledge students have shared in these areas already. We have been able to celebrate some wonderful results across Year 3 last term. I can’t wait to see this continue throughout this term.
Term 4 in Year 3 is extremely busy with many events, excursions and incursions to look forward to. Some of these include CF day, PCYC bike safety excursion, Starlab incursion, swimming lessons, swimming carnival, and for some, the end of year concert. What an exciting time we have ahead of us!
This week, our Year 3-6 students have been using Gigum Hall as a new play area. Our students have been really excited to use this space, with a variety of ball games taking place. We are so fortunate to have such a variety of locations, activities and for our students at every play time.
This term, our schoolwide theme is ‘Respect’. Respect is one of our school’s 5 values and it is something that our MHSS community does so well. Throughout the term, we will be encouraging students to share examples of respect that they have seen or demonstrated. Each class will work towards a ‘Respect’ goal as they work towards the Four Cares celebration at the end of the year. I look forward to seeing and hearing examples of how our students are showing respect every day.

Have a great week.

Year 4 News
Welcome back for Term 4! I spent a playtime yesterday at our new Gigum Hall and saw lots of our Year 4 students happily playing with their friends. Basketball was especially popular.
Our Year 4 teachers are busy reconnecting with students, re-introducing our student wellbeing actions in classes and starting teaching and learning from Day 1. I have included a few photos of the the learning this week. I have also met with each Year 4 teacher to continue planning for our teaching and learning together with your children. Our class teachers collaborate with Jess Ferguson, Inclusive Education Teacher, to ensure inclusive classrooms and practices.
Uniform Week has started successfully in Year 4. Students looked amazing in their uniforms on Tuesday and today. Thank you very much for your support. This week also started our Term 4 school wide theme of Respect, one of our MHSS values. I know our Year 4 students will embrace this theme.

Have a fantastic week.

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
It is hard to believe that our school is entering the final term for the year. It was a pleasure getting into classrooms yesterday to hear students and teachers prepare for a successful term. I listened to a range of Year 5 and 6 classes discussing this term’s uniform challenge. As I entered 6C and 6R students were busily completing their maths pre-test to demonstrate to Mrs Robinson and Mrs Carlsson what they already know about their new number pattern unit and providing them with formative assessment data that will help them plan high impact lessons in the future. It was great observing 6C also practising gratitude in their class and setting a respectful culture. While in 5S I had the opportunity to observe students complete a Kagan collaborative strategy, Stand Up Hand Up Pair Up, as they begun their new unit on money. We look forward to the great term ahead.

Have a terrific week.

Dyslexia Awareness and ADHD Awareness
Dyslexia Awareness Week will be held on 7 October to 12 October this year. The week aims to build public understanding of dyslexia, what it means and how we can all support those with dyslexia. Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty faced by people when reading and writing, which is estimated to affect anywhere between 10-20% of people. It can range from having slight impact to significant impact.
October is also ADHD Awareness Month. ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a common disorder which affects many children and adults. ADHD can affect focus (can be difficulty focusing or hyperfocus), self-regulation, impulse control, organisation skills and many other important skills. It is estimated that approximately 7% of children around the world have ADHD and the impact of ADHD into adulthood is becoming more widely recognised.
Have a great week
