Students had a wonderful start to week one of Term 4. Thank you to staff and parents for assisting our students successfully start the term. Routines are important as well as having the correct stationery and resources. This includes wearing full school uniform each day, this sets students up for success. It’s important we continue to work together throughout this term to make this a focus so all students see the term out being settled and switched onto their learning.
End of Year Awards Parades
Towards the end of this semester, the school celebrates students’ success through the Awards Parades. Attached to the link below is an outline of the criteria for Semester 2 Awards. Please read this carefully as it contains important information and if you have any questions, please email polla2@eq.edu.au
During the Semester 2 Awards, students have the opportunity to apply for award badges for Sporting Excellence and Cultural Excellence. Students NO longer need to apply for the Academic Excellence as eligible students will automatically receive this award. Students also DO NOT need to hand their existing badges back. All eligible students will receive a gold bar and bring this home for families to attach to existing badges. If students have not received a badge award previously, they will be supplied the badge and the bar.
Please see links below.
2025 School Planning
It is that time of the year again where we are starting to formulate 2025 classes.

Respect Program: Parent Information SessionThis week, we’re excited to invite you to our Respect Program Parent Information Session! Join us on Friday, 11 October, at 9:00 am in the Wandani Centre to learn more about this important initiative.
During the session, we’ll provide an overview of the Respect Program, share insights from current research, and explore some of the learning activities that students will experience. This is a fantastic opportunity to see firsthand how the program is designed to foster positive interactions, empathy, and understanding within our school community.
We hope to see you there for this meaningful look into our commitment to respect and positive values!

Year 4 Camp
Next week our Year 4 students commence camp. This will be their first camp and can be overwhelming for parents and students. The experience will provide students with a taste of independence and they’ll get the opportunity to build leadership skills and learn a lot about themselves along the way. We wish them all a fabulous time. A huge thank you to all staff who will be attending. I know what a huge commitment it is to be away from your own families during this time.
P&C meeting
Due to unforseen circumstances our next P&C meeting on Monday 14 October is cancelled. Our next meeting will be Monday 11 November at 6.30pm in Wandani. Hope to see you there.
Volunteer's Morning Tea
On Thursday 31 October, 8.45am we will be holding a morning tea for our volunteers. If you have volunteered for our school, we’d love you to come along.

This week in Care Class we will focus on Care for Environment. We will identify consistent predictable routines to care for the school environment, such as:
- ensuring litter is placed in the bin
- walking on pathways to reduce erosion, and
- staying out of the gardens.
Consistent predictable routines help students to know what is expected of them at school, in turn supporting student wellbeing and learning.
We will also focus on our School Value of Teamwork by developing partnerships, cooperation and collaboration for success. Teamwork is the collaborative effort of a team to achieve a common goal or to complete a task in the most effective and efficient way.
End of Year Concert
We are excited to invite you to our much-anticipated Prep and Year 6 End of Year Concerts, taking place on Monday, 25th November. This evening will be a wonderful celebration of our students’ hard work and dedication, featuring the dance and singing performances they’ve been preparing with enthusiasm and commitment.
From lively dance routines to heartfelt songs, our Prep and Year 6 students and performing arts teams are thrilled to showcase their talents and celebrate the progress they’ve made throughout the year. We’re certain it will be a memorable event that brings joy, laughter, and pride to our school community.
Please join us for an unforgettable evening! Mark your calendars – it’s a night not to be missed!

Swimming Superstars
A huge thank you to our parents and carers for preparing your child for swimming this term. Last week we began our swimming program and had a great time! For some of our Prep friends, this is their first experience of swimming and well done all Preppies for your careful listening and following instructions so you could have a safe, fun time at the pool.
Maths – Data
In Maths this term, we are learning to collect, show and talk about data. This is being done by answering simple questions such as a yes/no question or a question with 2 options. The responses are then collected and interpreted. Here you can see Prep M collecting data about which fruit is preferred, showing the data collected then discussing what it shows. Learner responses about the data might include ideas such as ‘In Prep M, more people like strawberries than bananas’, ‘strawberries are the favourite in Prep M’ or ‘less people like bananas than strawberries’.
Pre-prep Transitions and Playgroup
On Thursday evening this week we are holding our Prep 2025 information evening, 6.00pm in Gigum hall for parents. We commence our orientation sessions in week 3. If you or anyone you know has a child starting Prep in 2025, please come along. Check the Prep transition program calendar on the website under enrolments for details or contact the office. Playgroup is held every Friday from 8.45-9.30am – all welcome!

Growing Confident, Independent Year 1s
This term, we’re excited to help our Year 1 students grow in their confidence and independence! To help them prepare for Year 2, students will walk to the Lookout Zone by themselves, and from Week 3, Helping Hands students will transition to and from the service independently. Another way we can be supporting our children to develop autonomy is by encouraging them to remember to pack the special things they need each day, like their hat, water bottle, lunch box, and library bag. We can’t wait to see students take on these new responsibilities with enthusiasm!
Wonderful Words - Sparkling Stories!
Across our classes over the past week, our Year 1 students have had so much fun working together to create lists of describing words for their stories! They’ve been using feedback from their teachers and drawing on these exciting word lists to make their narratives even more interesting. You can support your child by chatting about new vocabulary when you read together at home and encouraging them to have a go at using these words in conversation or in their own stories. We’re so proud of how hard they’re working to make their writing shine!

Learning All About Time in Year 2
The students in Year 2 are working hard to learn to tell the time to the quarter hour using the language of ‘past’ and ‘to’. They are learning how to show times on analogue and digital clocks as well as read times that are written in words.
Some ways you can help your child to learn about time are:
- Note the time of day you do particular things with your child (e.g. What time do we wake up, have breakfast, drive to school, go to bed?)
- Note how long events take by discussing their duration using the words minute, hour, week, month and year.
- Try drawing your child’s attention to clocks in their world (e.g. clocks on their iPad, phones, car, wall clocks, T.V., computer screens). Ask your child to read the o’clock, half past and quarter to/past times on these different types of clocks.
Checkout these superstars in 2M who have worked together to make large analogue clocks on their table tops. The students in 2P have been practising telling the time in their Maths rotations.

Market Day in 3T
Last week I visited 3T’s Market Day. It was an outstanding display of creativity, teamwork, and learning. Students took the lead in designing their very own market stalls, complete with handmade products, displays, and a currency created just for the event. Each child took on a vital role, whether selling their items, negotiating prices, or making purchases, and the result was a lively marketplace bustling with energy and enthusiasm.
Market Day provided a fantastic opportunity to develop essential maths and communication skills in an engaging, real-world setting. Students worked diligently on concepts such as addition, subtraction, and basic budgeting as they calculated costs and change. Not only did this strengthen their understanding of money, but it also highlighted the importance of fair trade and pricing strategies.
Mrs Padgett and I were pleased to join in, visiting stalls and witnessing firsthand the exceptional effort and teamwork. Through role-playing and communication, students practised customer service, learned the importance of clear instructions, and negotiated to make fair trades. These skills will serve them well in both their academic journey and everyday life.
Congratulations to the 3T students and their teachers for a successful Market Day! It was a wonderful reminder of how learning can come to life in fun and memorable ways.

Homework club starting this week!
Starting this week, we’re excited to offer a Homework Club from 8:00 to 8:30 each morning in the lab! Homework Club provides a supportive and structured environment where students can revise concepts they have learnt in class with guidance and encouragement from our staff.
Attending Homework Club can bring a range of benefits for students. For students who may need extra help, Homework Club offers support to clarify concepts and ensure a strong understanding of the material. Additionally, working in this collaborative environment encourages peer support, where students often learn from each other, building a positive learning community.
If your child is interested in joining, simply send them along to Homework Club in the morning! We look forward to supporting our students’ success together.

Science Fun!
Our Year 4 students are having a lot of fun identifying forces acting on objects during a range of experiments. They are posing questions; making formal measurements and comparing their findings with others' findings.
There are many forces in our everyday lives and you can support your students at home by helping them observe those forces - for example, weight force (i.e. the weight of something), the force of a bat on the ball, the force of a hair brush on hair when it is being brushed, the force of your foot pushing on the pedal when you ride your bike.

Camp at Runaway Bay
Camp is only days away now, and I know the excitement is building for all of our students. Please remember to check-in with your child’s classroom teacher if you have any questions and refer back to the camp notes sent out from last term.

2025 School Leadership Positions
We are pleased to inform you that your child received an Application Booklet for the 2025 School Leadership Positions. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to step forward and apply for leadership roles within our school community as they prepare to enter Year 6.
The Application Booklet requires students to gather signatures from staff who can attest that they consistently demonstrate our school’s Four Cares and uphold our School Values, as well as parents and a community member. These values are at the core of what it means to be a positive leader in our school, and we encourage you to discuss this with your child as they work on their application.
Expectations for Applicants
- Excellent Behaviour: Students are expected to consistently demonstrate Care for Self, Care for Others, Care for Learning and Care for the Environment.
- Positive Role Model: We look for students who lead by example, including punctuality and wearing the correct school uniform at all times.
The application process not only involves gathering signatures but also showcases each student’s commitment to being a dependable and thoughtful leader within the school.
Key Dates
- Application Booklet Due: Applications are due on Friday, November 1, 2024.
- Shortlisting Process: After submissions, there will be a shortlisting process. Following this, shortlisted students will be required to deliver a short speech outlining why they would make an excellent school leader.
- Successful candidates are notified during the Year 5 Awards Assembly (Friday 6 December). This is a special moment to celebrate the achievements and leadership qualities of the selected students.
Upcoming Excursion: Eureka Excursion
We are also excited about the Eureka Excursion, which takes place on November 18 and November 20, 2024. The excursion provides a fun and educational experience, allowing students to immerse themselves in the history of Australia’s gold rush.
Please note that there has been a swap in dates for some classes.
- Monday 18 November 5V, 5B, 5C, 5F
- Wednesday 20 November 5L, 5J, 5D, 5P, 5R
Please log into QParents to make payments and to complete permission forms. We look forward to an enriching and enjoyable experience for all!
If you have any questions regarding the leadership applications or the upcoming excursion, please don’t hesitate to contact the school office.

Learning in 6C
In Year 6 this term, students are writing a diary entry that connects with the reader’s emotions. To inspire their diary writing, students are taking on the characters from episodes within the ‘My Place’ series. They watch an episode, then write a diary entry from the perspective of the main character.
This week I visited 6C during a lesson on including verbs into their diary writing that show what a character is feeling. 6C explored and generated examples of doing, thinking and feeling verbs to enhance their diary entries. To do this, Miss Curran used digital tools to collect and organise student’s thinking and ideas.
By the end of the lesson, 6C were able to successfully include carefully chosen verbs to describe an event at a point in time that helped connect with the reader’s emotions. Excellent work 6C!

Year 6 Graduation – fundraising opportunity
Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to support with cooking the BBQ on election day to support the fundraising efforts for Year 6 Graduation. If you’re heading to the school on Saturday 26 October to cast your vote, stop by to grab a sausage and/or drink!
Public Speaking and Debating
Last night we had 3 students from Year 6 participate in the Lions Club public speaking competition at The Lakes College. Well done to Sri, Anh and Sesini on your outstanding presentations. You represented Team Mango excellently! Congratulations to Sesini on placing 3rd!
Tonight, our Year 6 debating teams compete at St Columba’s. Good luck to Ravya, Anh, Sesini, Sai, Mila, Roisin, Kapish, Jade and John. We know you will display the Mango Hill Values and represent Team Mango with pride.

Assessing writing in English
This term is a busy one in English as students learn new things, but also demonstrate to their teachers all of their learnings from throughout the year. In all year levels our students will apply their knowledge about writing by completing a final writing task sometime this term. At the moment they are learning about the new texts, but as the term progresses they will have an opportunity to show off their understandings about ideas, text structure, noun groups, verb groups, feeling words, sentences, spelling and punctuation.
Students are supported with these assessment tasks with a writing scale, and teachers will provide feedback on each of the aspects as the term progresses. We look forward to seeing how our students can apply their ideas and understandings in the final pieces of writing.
AR Millionaires
Many of our AR readers have started the term off with a bang! It has been so great to share in the celebrations of our eagers readers who have already reached some goals. There is plenty of time this term to reach your goals too!
Congratulations to James who reached 1 million words at the end of Term 3. Congratulations also to Samuel who has reached 2 million words, and to Lucy who has reached 3 million words.

These are fabulous achievements and we are very proud of all of them. Super reading James, Samuel and Lucy!
Premier’s Reading Challenge
This year more than 200 000 students took place in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Congratulations to all of the students from Mango Hill who participated. We have received the certificates back from the Premier’s office and they will be distributed to the eligible students this week. Well done everyone!
Now that the challenge is finished, don’t forget to keep on reading! The Hub is open every day from 8.15am until 3pm each afternoon. We’d love to see you soon!
Scholastic Book Club
Thanks to all of those families who have already submitted their online orders for this term’s Scholastic Book Club.
Don’t forget all orders must be submitted by tomorrow - Thursday 10 October. We can only accept online orders.
Have a fantastic week

Big PE Dates in Term 4
- 28 November (Thursday, Wk 9) – MHSS Swimming Carnival (10-12yrs)
- 29 November (Friday, Wk 9) – MHSS Swimming Carnival (8-9yrs)
Clinics and Extra-Curricular Opportunities
In Term 4 we are lucky to have several class clinics and after school extra-curricular sporting opportunities for students. Please keep an eye out in the coming weeks for more information. This will include the following.
- AFL QLD Auskick/Superkick Program (class clinic plus an additional paid after school program, information handed out this week to classes via a flyer)
- 3-4 AFL Training Program (free after school program, see below)
Yr. 3-4 AFL Training Program
At Mango Hill State School, we have a program for students in Year 4-6 called the “AFLQ Schools Cup”. Each year a MHSS AFL boys and a girls’ team is selected with students completing training at school and then playing in the AFLQ Schools Cup competition throughout the year.
In Term 4 we will be running an optional afterschool 4-week training program for year 3 and 4 students to develop the skills (punting, handballing, marking….) as well as AFL game rules and awareness. We would like your son/daughter if in Year 3-4 to attend if they are interested.
Dates/Times: Tuesdays 3.00pm-4.00pm - 29 Oct, 5, 12, 19 Nov
Venue: MHSS Oval
Cost: Nil
Forms: If your son/daughter is interested, a permission form needs to be collected from Mr Hills in the PE Office and returned prior to the first session.
Activity Risk: This is a medium risk activity (risk assessment completed by Mango Hill State School staff). The program has been designed to teach skills and rules of AFL. There will be no tackling in all games and activities and instead a “touch” version will be played. Mouthguards are not compulsory for AFL training sessions but are recommended.
Equipment/Uniform: No equipment is required but it is advisable for students to wear a change of clothes if they like. Students can also provide their own protective equipment (mouthguards) and can wear football boots (no metal tags), but again this is optional. If they do not have football boots, normal shoes can be worn.
QLD Netball Primary Schools Cup
During the first weekend of the Term 3 holidays, Mango Hill had 2 netball teams compete in the QLD netball primary schools cup competition in Bundaberg. We had two full days of netball games. Our Mango Hill A team won all their games to make it into the top division on the first day and overall came third in the competition. The Mango Hill B team showed great resilience in the face of tough competition, learning new skills and strategies along the way. It was a fantastic weekend for both teams overall.
