Congratulations Wakakirri Champions
It was fantastic to see our wonderful Wakakirri team perform at the Events Centre in Caloundra on Monday night. They were simply awesome!
Special thanks to our amazing dance teachers Mrs Kostoglou and Ms Sheehan. Thanks also to Mr Vlieg for his support on the day and to all the parents who gave their time, energy and support to the children. We are so proud of them and look forward to seeing the results on the Wakakirri website soon.
Please check out these photos below from Wakakirri.

Well-managed behaviour celebrations
We have recently introduced a set of questions we ask students to see whether they are clear about our behaviour expectations and processes. I am so pleased to report that members of the leadership team visited almost 40 classrooms from prep to year 6 last week and asked students questions about the four cares, about how positive behaviour is acknowledged, how inappropriate behaviour is managed, how they deal with conflict and how they learn wellbeing strategies. The answers were so rewarding!
Some of my favourite answers include the following.
- ‘My teacher cares for me. She greets me at the door each day and checks if I am okay.’
- ‘Students in my class follow the Four Cares. And if they forget or they have a big feeling, our teacher has taught us how to help them by giving them space.’
- ‘I use the High Five when I have a problem and this usually helps me sort it out.’
- ‘We are learning about growth mindset – having a go at things, remembering we can’t do it YET but if we keep trying, we will soon be able to ‘
- ‘Kids in my class aren’t perfect at following the Four Cares, but they are pretty good. And who’s perfect all the time?!’

Change of OSHC Provider – Welcome PCYC!
Last week in the newsletter I explained that PCYC were successful with their tender for our on-site Outside School Hours Care. I understand this has caused some community concern as change is hard. I would like to reinforce that we are very happy with the service from our current provider Helping Hands, however it was a mandatory procurement process and they were unsuccessful. I am excited by what the new service provider can offer.
I understand parents are mostly concerned about the change in staff members. We are currently working with PCYC and we are very hopeful that many of the existing Helping Hands staff will choose to apply for a position with PCYC and stay at our school service. I know PCYC are very keen to talk with these staff members.
PCYC will be on site in front of the Administration block this Friday 29 July and on Monday 1 August to meet with parents, answer any questions, share what they have to offer and start the enrolment process. Below is some information from the PCYC Service Manager and information about enrolment. Their phone number on the flyer will be active from this Friday.
Hello Families I would like to introduce myself. I am Fiona and will be the Service Area Manager from PCYC that will be supporting the service as we open and ongoing. I am very excited to become part of the Mango Hill School Community and look forward to meeting all of you and your children. I will be on site on Friday 29 July and Monday the 1 of August from 7am-9am and 2pm-6pm to answer all your enrolment questions. I will have Brooke who is our behaviour support officer, with me in the afternoons to help start the transition process for any children that may need some additional support needs or of if you have any specific requirements that you would like to talk about. If you have any questions, please email me @ mangohilloshc@pcyc.org.au. Fiona Micallef

OSHC Educators Day
Today I joined with the lovely staff and Cr Shipway to celebrate OSHC Educators Day. It was a pleasure to acknowledge these wonderful people who do a great job with our children.

Tea Towel Keepsake
Have you ordered your tea towel yet?
P & C Meeting Monday
Our next P & C Meeting will be held next Monday 1 August (instead of 8 August due to Ekka Holiday) at 6.30pm in the Old Hall (now knows as the Wandani Centre).
Topics for discussion include the following.
- Term 4 Health Units on protective behaviours including Daniel Morcombe Program and some elements from the Catching on Early Sexuality Program.
- Outside School Hours Care Tender outcomes
- Proposed change of fabric for school uniforms.
We welcome all parents and cares to attend.
Pine Rivers Show
A reminder if you are heading to the Pine Rivers Show, make sure you check out our Mango Hill State School display in the Education Pavilion. A sample of student projects, writing, handwriting and art from across the school are displayed. Friday, 29 July is sure to be a highlight as our Junior Choir will be performing during the day.
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Ready to Learn’. We will be consolidating this focus throughout next week.
We will be learning to Care for Self by being ‘Ready to Learn' and discussing how this will look, feel and sound. Being Ready to Learn means that:
- I am calm and in control of myself
- I am prepared and listening to my teacher when she/he speaks
- I am doing the learning my teacher has asked me to do
- I am completing any tasks that my teacher has asked me to do.
Just like us, our students can think best and plan ahead when they are feeling calm and positive. By developing each students’ ‘Ready to Learn' plan we are helping them to identify cues and use strategies so they will be able to continue the learning. These strategies include the following.
- Taking a short walk with a friend.
- Having a drink.
- Having a quick break with a favourite book.
- Sitting calmly in a tee-pee or play tent.
Early Departures – New window service 1pm to 2.30pm daily
We would like to advise all parents and carers of a change of practice at Mango Hill State School. From Thursday 28 July if you are needing to collect your child early from school please report to the Late Arrivals and Early Departures window at the side of the Admin building. The window will be open from 1pm until 2.30pm each day. If you are collecting your child before 1pm, or from Sick Bay please proceed to the main Administration office.
I’ve returned from leave to find all of my Prep friends have settled easily back into the routines of school and they are working hard with their learning. This is never a miracle, but the result of the work and dedication of our wonderful Prep teachers and Prep families. Huge thanks to Mrs Crawshaw for ticking off the million and one jobs in my absence. She’s decided Prep Land is a fun place to be and thoroughly enjoyed her time with our Preps.
For our writing assessment this term, we are building on our learning from Term 2. This term, we are building our beginning skills in persuasion. We are learning how to “sell” a book, by writing a few sentences about what we like about the book. We are tying this task into Book Week. Our Preps are learning how to answer five questions about their learning in writing. When we can articulate what we are learning and how we are going with our learning, we deepen our understanding.
We are learning to answer…
- What are you learning?
- How are you going with your learning?
- How do you know?
- What’s your next step?
- Where can you go for help?
Some answers I’ve heard this week in Prep classrooms include the following.
- What are you learning? We are learning to create a poster for Book Week.
- How are you going with your learning? I’m going good.
- How do you know? Because I’ve got lots of green highlighted on my scale (and then they’ve shown me their finger spaces, sight words and use of the word “like”).
- What’s your next step? (Pointing to their blue post-it note where their teacher has drawn a picture of their next step) I need to add feeling words.
- Where can you go for help? I can go to the Bump It Up Wall and it has examples of 4 star writing I can look at.
We use our Bump It Up Walls to really show our students what they need to include, to be successful. We show our students the Big Picture (What a Good One Looks Like), so they know what they have to aim for and then we break it down into parts and teach the different elements. We might do a lesson on adding in feeling words, or we might show students what a good sentence, with lots of description looks like. Then we put it all back together again, into one piece of writing.
Writing is one of the most complex things we do at school. It takes so much brain power! (We call this, the cognitive load). To write well, you need to be able to do alot of things.
- Know letters and their corresponding sounds (phonemic awareness).
- Know how to quickly, efficiently and neatly form these letters (handwriting).
- Know how to create a sentence (producing a text, orally first, then we write it down).
- Remember the order of the words we want to use (working memory).
- Get the ideas down! (…whilst we remember to use finger spaces, orient our text from top to bottom and left to right).
- Does it make sense? (reread, add words or delete words).
- Have we included what we need to include to be successful? (tracking our work against the scale or against the model and reflect).
It’s a lot!
Some of our Preps are writing fluently already. Some of our Preps need lots of help with many of the steps. We will all get there, eventually. Trust us!
At home, you can help by…
- Writing in front of your children, so they can see writing in the real world. Make a shopping list on paper, write their morning jobs on a chart on the fridge.
- Ask your child to do some of the lists for you! “Hey, while I’m making dinner, could you write down ‘bread’ and ‘milk’ for me so I don’t forget to buy it tomorrow?”
- Play imaginary games where writing is one part of what they do. You could build a box fort and they could label the bits of the castle / fort.
- Colouring in / drawing / creating patterns. Anything where they practise holding a pencil, using the correct pencil grip is fabulous. Grab a set of the thicker pencils for use at home!
One last thing you can do, to help your child learn these early literacy skills is to ensure they have had their vision tested. Good vision is vital for learning. We have Queensland Health nurses visiting next month to conduct free vision screeners here at school. We want every single Prep to participate in this. Even if you’ve had your child’s vision checked last year, prior to school, it’s a great idea to have their vision checked again. It’s recommended that we check our child’s vision each year. Fill out the permission slip pronto so your child can participate!

Save the Date!
We always have lots of questions from parents about how we use our iPADs in Prep to complement our learning. We believe the iPADs are a tool for learning; just like paper and pencils and concrete materials. We don’t use the iPADs all day and we don’t use our iPADs during lunch breaks. Come along and see some of the ways we aim to use our iPADs as a tool for learning, with Mrs Gardner, in the Prep G classroom (the one closest to the office).

Investigating First Nations Australian stories
Our Year 1 students are listening, reading and viewing a range of picture books and stories from First Nations Australians. They are learning to produce their own retells of these dreaming stories by writing about the events that happen at the beginning, middle and end. The children are learning about how to use describing words to enhance the quality of their retells. They are even learning to link and sequence ideas using special words called time connectives like Later that day, Suddenly and After that moment. We can’t wait to read their final retells at the end of the term!

The power of Daily Greetings
At Mango Hill State School we are committed to building classrooms that are safe and supportive. One of the ways our teachers do this is by personally greeting the children and checking in with them about how they are feeling.
One of the ways our teachers check in on how students are feeling is by using the Zones of Regulation. The Zones of Regulation is an approach used to support the development of self-regulation. All the different ways children feel are categorised into four coloured zones. We use the Zones to help children identify how they are feeling, be aware of what zone they are in and start to use tools and strategies to be in the appropriate zone for the moment.

You can use the Zones of Regulation language from school at home by doing the following.
- Identify your own feelings using Zones language in front of your child – ‘I’m feeling really tired after our big weekend. I am in the blue zone.’
- Talk about what tool you will use to be in the appropriate zone – ‘I’m going to go for a walk. I need to get to the green zone.’
- Help your child identify what zone they are in throughout the day – ‘You look like you’re very excited about going to this birthday party. I think you’re in the yellow zone.’
- Teach your child what Zones tools they can use to help them stay in the zone or move to a different zone – ‘It’s time for bed. Let’s put on our relaxing music. We need to move into the blue zone.’
The Zones of Regulation are a great way to develop a common language to talk about feelings and to help us understand them.
Learning in Year 2
It is always such a pleasure to spend time learning with our Year 2 students. We are continuing writing to describe a place. It was great to see 2R collaborating to use the “Step Inside” thinking routine to plan for their writing. In 2M students used the same thinking routine to describe Gigum Hall before having a go at writing about it. The following day, students collaborated in their groups to mark one student’s writing against the scale, celebrating what they could do and identifying their next steps. Students are using noun groups, verb groups and figurative language in their descriptions. I loved reading some of the descriptions from students in 2W as they wrote about one of their favourite places.
In Math, students are solving tricky fraction problems. We are focusing on halves, quarters and eighths. It’s so rewarding to see Growth Mindset in action, as students persist and then have that moment where they “get” it.

Playtime in Year 2
I have attached an updated photo of our Junior Play Area in progress. Bring on Term 4 when our students can play in it! In the meantime, students are enjoying the Clubs and the other play areas. Please encourage your child to use the High Five in the playground.
Take care and have a wonderful week

Using our High 5
In Year 3 it is so lovely to see the kindness and care for others at play and in the classroom. Students have been doing a beautiful job reconnecting with their peers, welcoming our new students to our Year 3 team and exploring our new play clubs. Continuing this great work our Year 3 students have been working with their teacher to build their confidence in using the High 5 to problem solve tricky social situations. It is very normal for children to sometimes have a disagreement with their peers. It might be about the rules of the game, turn taking or deciding what they will do at play. But it is how we negotiate that demonstrates our care for others when those situations arise. That is why this term the Year 3s will be taking part in learning the language of the High 5 to support them to communicate with their peers proactively and to seek help when they are getting stuck. It has been so lovely to see and hear students using the ‘power words’ to Talk Friendly to their peers – I feel… when you …. because…. and I need you to …. Thank you.
Messy Maths
3C were absolute super stars in representing their thinking in multiple ways as they problem solved multiplication word problems created by their peers. It was great to see their visible thinking and critical thinking skills as they self-reflected against the scale to bump up their responses to 4 star.

Have a great week

Excellence in Year 4
We are kicking some serious goals in our learning in Year 4 this week! When visiting rooms, I look forward to looking at our students Writing and Maths scales and asking how they are going with their learning goals. I am always impressed by how articulate our students are at explaining what they are learning, how they are going and what they need to do to improve. Our teachers work hard to regularly update student scales to support students with knowing how they are tracking each lesson.
How amazing are these photos !

Teamwork in Year 4
At Mango Hill, we are fantastic at showing the value of Teamwork and representing Team Mango with pride. I see this on display often in our classrooms, as students work collaboratively to construct answers and solve problems. In writing lessons this week, I have seen students in 4T and 4L, working together to plan traditional stories, that include a clear beginning, middle and end. By working together to develop their ideas, students are better able to engage in independent writing.

Innovation in Year 4
This week, Year 4 have continued to learn about fractions. Our teachers have been providing such fun, engaging and innovative ways to explore fractions and consolidate their understanding. Our students are loving the opportunity to problem solve, reason and prove their thinking with their peers. As they continue to learn about fractions this week, students will be solving problems involving fractions in a range of different contexts. You can support your children with this by talking with them about where fractions can be found around your home.

Year 6 Camp
Our Year 6 students have had a wonderful two weeks at Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast. If you have missed the photos please jump on to our Facebook page to see the happy faces and excitement of our students. Our students have used their week on camp to build great relationships and connections with their peers, develop interpersonal skills that will help them be lifelong learners and learn lessons about the world around them outside of the classroom. Students have faced challenges and developed resiliency and a growth mindset. A special thank you to all of the staff that have made this opportunity one to remember. Well done Year 6!
Check out some photo below!

Year 6 Graduation
