Happy Holidays!
It has been an action-packed Term 2 and all staff, students and families certainly deserve to be proud of the achievements we have made together. Highlights of the term include the following.
- Our school community demonstrated a great Team Mango culture and super athletic skills at our Sports Day and Athletics Carnivals.
- We have celebrated The Arts with our Instrumental Gala evening and Mid-Year Concerts showcasing some wonderful performances.
- Our boys AFL Team had great success this term and have progressed to the AFLQ Schools Cup finals.
- Report Cards are almost complete and there are so many wonderful celebrations and achievements to be proud of.
- Our facilities work has made such great progress with Year 5 & 6 students moving into the new building this week. We now have the multi-purpose court, junior soccer field, senior playground and junior playground projects to complete in Term 3. So exciting!

Once again, thank you for such a successful term. Have a safe and happy holiday and I look forward to connecting with all of you in Term 3. School resumes on Monday 11 July.
NAIDOC week at MHSS
On Friday we celebrated NAIDOC Week as a whole school at Gigum Hall. Artist Wendy Rix joined us and we learned the message of this year's NAIDOC Week: Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! We heard about Wendy’s family and that identifying as a First Nations person isn’t about what you look like, because we all look different, it’s about where we most belong and where we’re most connected. A group of our students shared a story and action sequence with us. We ended our parade with our school song, lead by our school choir.

Didn’t we have the best fun at our very first Sports Day?!
We cheered, jumped, sprinted, danced and transitioned between activities very slowly - such a wonderful reminder that we’re only five when you see us altogether and we’ve all got to move at once!
Most of all, we’ve learned new skills and tried them out. We didn’t know how to run a race before and stay in our own lane! (To be fair, some of us could still do with some practice about the own lane thing). We’ve not “competed” in long jump or high jump before. Now we have! Tick tick - our first year of school is all about tackling the unknown and giving things a go and that’s just what we did!
Special shout out to our Prep J friends and Eli especially, for their entertaining moves to our transition song.
Week 10 has been tricky for a number of our Prep friends. It’s pretty clear some of us are “at capacity” - we’ve given the semester our all, we’ve left it all out on the field. For some children, they are going home exhausted every day and being a tad crotchety at home. For some Prep friends, this has lead to some big emotions. There’s another thing we have to learn - how to manage our big emotions.
Our Prep friends have done a super job supporting their peers over the past week. They have been so kind and so caring towards their friends who are having these big emotions. As parents, you should be so proud you are raising such inclusive, kind kids! Special mention to Amelia’s mum from Year 1 who walked past a little one having a big emotion yesterday and explained it to her toddler with such kindness. As she said, “It’s important to raise inclusive kids,” and I couldn’t have put it better myself. We’re all a team at Team Mango!
I will be on leave the first two weeks back of Term 3 and our guidance officer Mrs Emma Crawshaw will be Prep Deputy in my absence. She’ll take very good care of you!

Have a lovely week

Junior Sports Day Fun!
The Year 1s had so much fun at their Junior Sports Day on Monday. The children participated in four events including the 60m sprint, novelty races, long jump and high jump. Everyone had been working hard in PE to develop their skills and boy did it show out on the field. I was so impressed watching everyone get in and have a go and to hear the children cheering one another on.
When I asked the Year 1s what the highlights of their day were, they said the following.
‘I loved doing the running races and getting the ribbon at the end.’ – Scarlett
‘I liked doing high jump and jumping over the rope.’ – Hazel
‘I liked jumping into the sandpit and doing the run up.’ – Yug
‘The races were my favourite. I won a ribbon.’ - Patrick

Learning in Year 2
Students and teachers have both worked hard all semester. Your little treasures should feel so proud of themselves. Our students have learned so much and we can see the tremendous growth they have experienced. Your child’s class teacher will have made or will be soon making contact with you if your child’s final academic results need to be personally discussed.
Special events in Year 2
We have enjoyed such a special week so far. On Monday, we had a blast at our Year 2 Sports Day. Congratulations to all students on a successful afternoon of fitness and fun with friends. We felt so lucky that many parents and other relatives were able to join us. Yesterday, we celebrated our Four Cares and our focus of Gratitude. Students across Year 2 chose a celebration activity and celebrated their fabulous selves and their wonderful cohort. We still have mural painting for NAIDOC Week and our Crazy Dress Day on Friday to go!
Safe holidays
On behalf of the whole Year 2 team, I wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday. I have encouraged students to keep on reading! Whatever you and your family do I hope you rest up and enjoy. Take care and I look forward to seeing our students return for Semester 2.

Playground Design
All smiles this week as our Year 3 students co-constructed 3D models of their playground designs with their peers. It was lovely to hear the thinking behind the students' decisions when constructing their models as they considered accessibility for the diversity of the community and age appropriateness. One little person was super considerate as they wanted to be sure their friend who was in a wheel chair would have just as much fun as he did when visiting his playground. Their decisions in design were purposeful, intentional and fun! What a great learning experience.
Happy Holidays
Thank you to all our students for a wonderful Term 2. I know you have all worked very hard to conquer your personal learning goals on the way. I am very proud of all that you have achieved and wish everyone a safe and restful break. Happy holidays Team Mango!

Have a great week

Term 2 achievements in Year 4
What an incredible term it has been! This week in our Year 4 team meeting, our teachers had the chance to share and celebrate the successes from Term 2. I was so proud to hear of both the individual success stories they shared about students, as well as some celebrations for our entire cohort of students. Term 2 has presented a number of challenges (as have the past few years), but our students continue to push ahead with resilience, achieving some excellent results this term.
Although assessment is completed, the learning has not stopped! In visiting 4L this week, I saw them hard at work, learning about fractions, which will be a new topic in Maths next term. I am always inspired when I see our values of commitment and excellence enacted by our students every day!

Fun Fair
Our Four Cares Celebration Fun Fair was a huge success on Monday afternoon. We had activities such as putt-putt, ring toss, coin toss, footy passing to name just a few. We also had an opportunity at the end of the fair to share some examples of what we have been grateful for in Term 2. Students shared examples of being grateful for their friends, their teacher and for coming to such a great school. These are things I am certainly grateful for too!

NAIDOC Week
To celebrate NAIDOC week, all of our students are adding a fingerprint to a mural for our new building. Thank you to our local Indigenous artist, Wendy Rix, for giving our students this fantastic experience and for sharing with us what this year’s theme, Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!, means to her. How wonderful that our students will get to be a part of something that will be at our school for many years to come!

Athletics Carnival
Over Wednesday and Thursday this week, Year 4 students will participate in the School Athletics Carnival. Parents are welcome to attend to cheer on their children! Remember water bottles, hats and sunscreen! Go Team Mango!
Have a super week

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
After what has been an unusual semester it has been great celebrating the success of Year 5 and 6 over the last week. Firstly, I loved taking the time to celebrate how committed our students are to the Four Cares at their Behaviour Fun Fair. It was wonderful seeing the smiling faces of our students as they celebrated their success this semester. Secondly, our staff completed their report cards this week. These will be sent to parents early in the new term. However, when looking at the student learning outcome results I can see that all teachers have worked hard to engage all of their learners in achieving success. I am really excited to share these success stories with you early in Term 3. I hope all of our families have a lovely holiday.
Year 6 Graduation
It is that time of the year in which we begin to turn our mind to the planning of the Year 6 Graduation. This year the Year 6 Graduation will be held on Wednesday the 7 of December commencing at 5pm. To ensure our ceremony reflects the thoughts and wishes of our families I always work with the Graduation Committee, made up of Year 6 parents and carers, in the planning phase of the ceremony. If you wish to be a part of the Graduation Committee can you email your interest to jbenf10@eq.edu.au and RSVP to our first Graduation Committee meeting on Wednesday 13 July at 4:30pm in the Administration Block.

Accelerated Reader
Late last week a very excited Amaan finished AR. This means he has reached the top of AR at Mango Hill State School. Amaan has been quizzing all year and has now successfully completed two quizzes at 9.0.
This week Gia finished AR as well! Gia is a quiet achiever who has been working consistently all year to also reach 9.0.
For both Amaan and Gia this is an extraordinary achievement and we are very proud of their persistence and commitment to reading.
This week we also had a surprise visit from Kyan, an ex-student and a millionaire reader. Look at this great photo of Kyan with his old AR poster form 2018 – he has hardly changed a bit!
Returning and borrowing
This week is a great week to return any library books that you no longer need. It is also a great week to choose a new book for the holidays. Perhaps you’d like to learn about something new? Perhaps you’d like to read a really thick book over the holidays? Perhaps you’d like to read some books for your next AR level? Whatever the reason, the holidays provide us with lots of time to read, read and read!
The Hub is open before school (from 8.15am) and every afternoon (until 3pm) if you’d like to pop in and borrow a book for the holidays! See you soon!
Volunteers
Thank you to all those willing volunteers who have been busy contacting some new books for our Hub collection. If you have a little spare time over the holidays, pop in to see Wendy and she can give you a small (or large) pile of new books and a roll of contact to help us out while at home! We are so grateful for the help of Team Mango!
Maths is everywhere - in the playground, at the shops and at home.
Introducing maths in everyday activities and through play, supports children’s learning in all areas of mathematics: geometry, measurement, statistics, probability, algebra and number. Children can also create meaningful connections with maths in the context of their lives and this deepens children’s mathematical understanding.
Incorporating maths into everyday experiences is easy and fun. Some of these ways include.
- Jigsaw puzzles and drawing shapes helps teach children problem solving skills and spatial awareness.
- Making patterns using pebbles, pegs or pieces of coloured paper.
- Cooking provides opportunities to count and measure.
- Shopping provides children with opportunities to collect food and grocery items, label prices and calculate amounts.
- Children can help pack away grocery items - arrange them by: height (tallest to the shortest); cost (least expensive to most expensive); or by weight (heaviest to lightest).
- Watching sport – distances, times, scores…sport is filled with numbers!
- Travelling – students can use language to describe the journey and explore maps.
- Playing games (board games, racing games, spatial games) are fantastic ways to have students engage in mathematical thinking.
Have a fantastic week
