Assessment and Report Cards
Teachers are currently working hard assessing student progress this semester. Teachers analyse a range of tasks that students have completed and make an ‘on-balance’ judgement of their level of achievement against the Australian Curriculum Achievement Standard in each of the learning areas. Folios of work are moderated within the school and by colleagues at other schools to ensure consistency of judgement.
Report cards will be sent home on Wednesday 13 July and will include information about your child’s achievement level in various learning areas. There will also be information about their behaviour and effort.
This year there is a slight change with the Arts results not reported in Semester 1. All results from dance, music, drama, media and visual arts will be collated and reported in Semester 2.
Save the Date – Semester 1 Award Ceremonies
To celebrate the student achievements from Semester 1 we will hold our year level Award Ceremonies in Gigum Hall in the first two weeks of Term 3. Save the dates as follows.
- Year 1 Awards: Tuesday 19 July at 8.30am
- Year 2 Awards: Wednesday 20 July at 8.30am
- Year 3 Awards: Thursday 14 July at 8.40am
- Year 4 Awards: Thursday 21 July at 8.40am
- Year 5 Awards: Friday 22 July at 8.40am
- Year 6 Awards: Friday 15 July at 8.40am
Parents will be emailed by Tuesday 12 July if your child is eligible to receive an award.
Concert success
It was an absolute joy to see our students perform last night at the mid-year Concert and last week at the Music Gala evening. What talented students we have!
Special thanks to all our teachers for their commitment, the P & C for supporting with snacks and drinks and the parents and carers for your support. A special shout out to our teachers of the Arts – Mrs Kostoglou, Mrs Morrell, Mrs Almond, Ms Sheehan, Mrs Nicolopoulos, Mr James, Mr Richards and Mr Stylianou. We appreciate you!
Congratulations students!

NAIDOC week at MHSS
NAIDOC week will be celebrated nationally, from 3-10 July. As this is during our school holidays, MHSS will celebrate NAIDOC week from Friday 17 June, through to Friday 24 June. This year’s theme is Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!. Further information regarding NAIDOC week and this year’s theme can be found here: https://www.naidoc.org.au/awards/current-theme
At MHSS, we will celebrate NAIDOC week with a range of activities including the following.
- NAIDOC week parade on Friday 17 June, including special guest and local Indigenous Artist – Wendy Rix.
- Yarn and Eats afternoon for our families of First Nations students, on Monday 20 June @3pm in Gigum Hall. We will have special guests from IUHI Morayfield running activities for the students.
- Mural painting with Wendy Rix – every class has been rostered on throughout Week 10 to contribute to the mural, which recognises this year’s theme, Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!.
- Classroom activities – as it is our Care Class theme for the last week of school, classes will participate in a range of activities during their Care Class time.
All parents and carers are welcome to attend Friday’s parade, where we will kick start our NAIDOC week celebrations. We hope to see you there!
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘NAIDOC Week’. This focus continues in the classrooms throughout next week.
Throughout this week and next, students will be participating in NAIDOC activities. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
Here is a colouring sheet you can do at home.

ICAS Registrations Now Open
Mango Hill State School will once again be participating in the 2022 ICAS Assessments. ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Digital Technologies. Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition. Top performers will be eligible for medals and the opportunity to attend a special award ceremony to have their academic excellence publicly recognised.

Assessment all Wrapped up!
Our Prep teachers are busily finishing up assessment tasks and completing report cards; a reminder you’ll receive your Prep child’s first report card in the first week of Term 3.
Report cards are one way we share with you how your child is going at school. Nothing in the report card will be a surprise because your child’s teacher will already have spoken with you about any concerns they have for your child.
I often hear of parents comparing their child’s report card with others. “How many As did your child get? My child got...”
Our children are all individuals and we want them all to achieve their potential. It’s not a race, and it’s especially not a race in the very first semester of their (very long!) life at school.
Is your child happy? Healthy? Learning? Growing? If you answer yes, then be proud of them and of you - you’re all doing okay!
So much learning - beyond academics - happens in Prep. This semester our Preps have...
- learned how to be a part of Team Mango, what it means to demonstrate the 4 Cares, what it means to wear our uniform with pride
- learned how to follow school routines and that those bells at the end of play time truly mean it’s time to stop playing!
- learned the names of many new friends, teachers and other adults, learned who’s who and how to seek help
- learned to listen, share, take turns and compromise (to be fair, this continues to be a work in progress for pretty much all of us!)
- learned to do things for ourselves. Sure we may be the youngest in the school, but we are very capable (if you let us have a turn, we can show you the way!).
That’s a lot of learning, well before the academic side of life! We’ve also learned...
- the letter names of all upper case and lower case letters, their corresponding sounds, how to put these together to make words, how to put these words together to make sentences.
- words! Lots and lots of words, including our own names and the names of others.
- that we read and write from left to right and that one-to-one correspondence is a thing (a vital thing).
- numbers and values and counting and more one to one correspondence
- more and less and longer and shorter and how to sort items (hopefully this skill has helped them when cleaning their rooms?).
This term we’ve also learned about being grateful. It’s a pretty big word for us and a fairly big concept. We will need your ongoing help to deeply understand this. But we know that understanding the meaning of grateful and showing others when we are grateful helps our well-being. See the attached pic taken yesterday where two little poppts wrote their own “I’m grateful for...” lists - unprompted. Hands down the highlight of my day! (Thank you Huxley and Jia for being so thoughtful!)
Have a lovely week. We’re nearly to the finish line of our first semester of school! We’ve got this.
Have a lovely week

Week 10 Fn Coming Up!
We are looking forward to some wonderful events coming up in Year 1 next week.
Junior Sports Day - Monday
We will start the week on Monday with our Junior Sports Day. The Year 1 rotations will begin in the middle session. Our students have been doing a wonderful job in PE learning all the events and will be ready to show off their skills during our sprint, high jump, long jump and novelty race rotations. It’s going to be an action packed session out in the sun so please be sure that your child has their school hat and named water bottle ready for the day.
Four Cares Fun Fair Celebrations - Tuesday
On Tuesday we will celebrate the Four Cares with our Year 1 Fun Fair Celebrations. Our teachers have planned some wonderful activities for this session including Knock ‘em Downs; Hula Hoop; Scissor, Paper, Rock game and Clear the Bean Bags. We can’t wait for the fun!
NAIDOC Week Mural Painting - Friday
For NAIDOC week this year, every student across the school will take part in creating a mural led by local Indigenous artist, Wendy Rix. Our Year 1s will work with their Year 6 buddies to add their fingerprints to the mural on Friday of Week 10. What a wonderful way to celebrate our First Nations Australians. We look forward to seeing the finished product on display in our new building!
Learning in Year 2
It has been such a pleasure to see the learning continue in Year 2. I was in 2J this week when students were deepening their understanding of the compensate strategy in Math. In 2T and 2R I saw students doing Writing Café. Year 2 teachers are continuing to engage your children in learning and keeping routines and expectations consistent. Of course, we have also had lots of dance rehearsals and last night, our students were fabulous as they performed at their Mid-Year Concert. Congratulations to all the students who performed so well and showed their amazing Mango Hill manners all evening. I also acknowledge all the support you give your children to allow this evening to be such a success and a wonderful memory for all. Our teachers were also rehearsing for the last couple of weeks and we saw them perform last night too!
Bucket filling in Year 2
We have loved learning about and practising bucket filling in Year 2. Maybe your child can teach you about bucket filling and over the upcoming school holidays, focus on bucket filling at home. I’m sure they will love it.
Special events
We have many special events happening in these final two weeks of school so please continue to read your class weekly newsletter, this school newsletter, our Facebook page and of course your Term 2 overview. I look forward to seeing those who can join us at this Friday’s parade.

Learning the Italian language through play
Year 3 students this term have loved learning to play traditional games and communicating using their Italian language knowledge and skills. It was with great excitement over the past few weeks that they were able to record themselves playing a range of games and sharing their language skills of Italian as they communicated with one another during play. Walking around the playground our Year 3 friends can be heard calling out “Tocca a me” meaning, 'It is my turn" in their everyday games. How wonderful to see them transfer their learning into their play at lunchtimes.

Have a great week

Brain Breaks, Movement Break and building a positive classroom culture
Our Year 4 teachers work really hard every day to provide quality learning experiences for our students. They also work hard to set students up to be ready to learn and to develop safe and supported classroom environments. In 4L, Mrs Langman is always coming up with new and creative ways to give students a movement break to support them to refocus their minds before getting too tired. In 4B, Mr Barnett breaks up his focussed instruction time with opportunities to learn via song. 4B also start every day with a wonderful welcome song! In 4R, Miss Reade ends the day with her students sharing what went well that day. The class then choose a ‘celebration cheer’ to celebrate their positive day. It is always a wonderful experience to be a part of these moments in Year 4 classrooms throughout the week!

Writing, writing, writing
Finishing writing pieces was the big goal for many Year 4 students this past week. The students have worked so hard this term, reading Rowan of Rin and writing diary entries as the character, Rowan. Their improvement in writing week-to-week has been fantastic to see. I know we will have some very proud authors wanting to show off their writing to their families soon!

Mid-Year Concert
Thank you to all that attended the Mid-Year Concert last night. Our Year 4 performers were amazing!
Fun Fair
On Monday afternoon, Year 4 will have their Fun Fair, as a celebration for their work in demonstrating this term’s theme, Gratitude, and for following the Four Cares each day. The Year 4 teachers have organised a range of fun activities for students to participate in including pick-a-stick, frisbee toss and coin toss to name just a few. Fun Fair will be held in Gigum Hall between 1.45-2.45pm.
Athletics Carnival
The athletics carnival will cap off a very busy last week of school. Our Year 4 students will attend on either Wednesday or Thursday, depending on their year of birth. For students born in 2013, they will participate on Wednesday. Students born in 2012 will participate on Thursday. Students not participating on a given day, will attend class with a Year 4 teacher and some combined classes. Further details of this will be communicated with you by your child’s classroom teacher.
We welcome all parents and carers to come and cheer on their children at the carnival!
Have a super week

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
As we finalise our assessments for the semester many of my visits to classrooms have been to discuss the last push students are making on their writing assessment pieces. It has been great observing the growth mindset students have demonstrated as they action their feedback to make their writing even better. On my travels I had the opportunity to work with 6D as they completed their last focus on their volume and capacity Maths unit. What struck me while working with 6D was the control they had of their own learning during the lesson. Students explored different size containers and worked together to teach other different methods for determining the capacity of the different objects. It was great working in a class that was a little noisy but so engaged in their learning.

Year 5 Eureka Gold Rush Excursion
This week our Year 5 classes had the opportunity to take their learning outside of the classroom and participate in the Eureka Gold Rush Excursion at Beenleigh. This excursion provided students with the experience of immersing themselves into Australia’s historical and cultural past and learn what life was like in the 1850s. I had the opportunity to talk to two students from 5G who went on the excursion and they said they loved participating in the role play as it gave them a good understanding and empathy for the different roles people played during this time.

Student Leadership – Sustainability
Last week I wrote about two initiatives being led by our Sustainability Captains. This week saw one of those programs, Simply Cups, come to fruition. You will notice at our Sole’s Café and the old hall, two Simply Cup stations that our community can use to recycle their disposable coffee cups. Each week these get delivered to our local 7-Eleven and are recycled. This results in a further commitment to caring for the environment. When I spoke to Charlie and Charlotte, our Sustainability Captains they were excited about their impact on sustainability. “As the first Sustainability Captains it is great seeing a project that we discovered making a difference to the environment of Mango Hill State School. We look forward to doing more.”
Year 6 Graduation
It is that time of the year in which we begin to turn our mind to the planning of the Year 6 Graduation. This year the Year 6 Graduation will be held on Wednesday the 7 of December commencing at 5pm. To ensure our ceremony reflects the thoughts and wishes of our families I always work with the Graduation Committee, made up of Year 6 parents and carers, in the planning phase of the ceremony. If you wish to be a part of the Graduation Committee can you email your interest to jbenf10@eq.edu.au and RSVP to our first Graduation Committee meeting on Wednesday the 13 of July at 4:30pm in the Administration Block.

Accelerated Reader
Congratulations to Shagun who this week reached her goal of reading 1 million words. This is an impressive achievement and we are very proud of Shagun.
Don’t forget there is still 1 week left to reach your AR goal. How many books have you read this term? How many quizzes have you passed? Which level have you reached? Students are welcome to borrow over the holidays so there are still plenty of opportunities to read, read and read! The Hub is open every morning from 8.15am and every afternoon until 3pm. Pop on in and find a book that you would like to read over the holidays!
Premier’s Reading Challenge
There is still time to start the Reading Challenge if you haven’t already done so. All completed forms should be handed into the Hub by the end of August. We look forward to receiving as many forms as possible.

Year 5-6 Interschool Sports
Well done to our Year 5 and 6 students who competed at the recent Pine Rivers Interschool Sports Day. Feedback from teachers who attended was resoundingly positive with lots of commitment and sportsmanship shown. Students will again attend Interschool Sport this Friday for their last competition day this term.
Boy’s AFLQ Schools Cup
On Thursday 2June, 18 boys from MHSS represented our school at the annual AFLQ Schools Cup Competition which this year was played at Burpengary Sports Complex. This was the 6th year Mango Hill SS had entered into the competition.
MHSS finished 2nd place in the 2018-2020 regional event and last year we won. The team was excited to continue in this success. There were five teams competing with our long-time rivals Banksia Beach amongst them.
With an easy start to the day for MHSS, the boys team captained by Angus B and his vice-captains Charlie L and Cohen C amassed big wins over Narangba Valley 73-13 and St Joseph’s Nudgee 69-0. The next game followed a similar pattern with MHSS defeating Eaton’s Hill 24-7.
In the last round match, MHSS played effectively a Grand Final against the also unbeaten, Banksia Beach. The team from Banksia Beach were always the team to beat so the boys, led by Coach Mr V and Manager Mr Wong, were pumped and ready to go. The match began with points scored by MHSS. However, our long-time nemesis Banksia Beach fought back, proving that this would indeed be our most difficult game of the day. The match concluded with an exciting couple of goals, maintaining our lead and building to a final score or 20-7… WINNERS!!
Some of our stars for the tournament include Angus B who lead the team well, playing tenaciously and working hard to motivate the players under his guidance. Tala L, played the game of his life, making spectacular marks and out-leaping his opposition in each and every ruck. Carlos M was outstanding in defence, protecting our goal and making some great saves. Cohen C put his body on the line to ensure a win in our second last game and due to injury was unable to play in the final game. However, his support from the side line and his rousing half-time chat inspired his team to a successful outcome.
All boys did the “team” jobs, following our game-plan to perfection. Each player trusting their team mates and focussing on their individual tasks.
For the second consecutive time MHSS have WON the AFLQ Schools Cup Regional Playoff day. Our boys’ team will now compete at the SEQ Finals in Term 3 to hopefully progress towards the state finals.
A very special thank you goes out to the wonderful parents who came as team supporters and to help out on the day. Without this wonderful support days like this would not run as smoothly as they did at the AFLQ Schools Cup.
Girl’s AFLQ Schools Cup
13 girls from MHSS represented our school at the annual AFLQ Schools Cup Competition, which this year was played at Burpengary Sports Complex. This was the 5th year Mango Hill SS had entered the girls into the competition. In that time, MHSS has improved each year and were confident of taking it to the best teams in our region. There were three teams MHSS were placed against including Banksia Beach, Narangba Valley, Eaton’s Hill.
Unfortunately, the MHSS team lost 4 players due to illness the day before the competition so the team were on the back foot playing with only 1 reserve. But in true MHSS spirit, the girls rose to the challenge and put in a huge effort all day.
MHSS first game was against Narangba Valley, who proved a great competitor. Coming out of the blocks a little slow, the girls soon adapted to the physicality and pace of the game. MHSS ended up winning the game 28-19 with Belle, Zahra and Charlotte all playing extremely well.
The second game was against Eaton’s Hill. A really tough game ended in a 35-1 loss. Again, Charlotte played extremely well with Isabella and Harper also stepping up.
The next two games were going to be tough with our team fatiguing quickly with the lack of reserves. Firstly, came Banksia Beach. The girls went in determined but came up against a very fierce team and were defeated 74-1. The running from Annlea never stopped and the effort from Belle and Hannah was fantastic in the tough loss.
In the last game MHSS again played Narangba Valley and with the girls exhausted from a big competition day, they went down 12-1 in a tough last match.
The girl’s team ended up finishing in 3rd position for the competition. All of the girls performed extremely well and as a team, MHSS were significantly improved. Mr Hills and Mr Goulding were extremely proud of each of the girls who participated on the day and could not have asked for a more committed and lovelier group of students. The commitment shown by these students to not only attend the day, but also to participate in training after school is a credit to them and their families.
A very special thank you goes out to the wonderful parents who came as team officials and helped out. Without this wonderful support days like this would not run as smoothly as they did.
Met North AFL
Last week Angus from MHSS was representing the Met North Region at the QLD State AFL Championships. The Met North team did extremely well, but unfortunately, they lost the grand final 26-25 against South Coast. However, in some fantastic news Angus was selected for the Queensland AFL team and will now play at the National AFL Championships in Adelaide in August. Congratulations to Angus, this is a huge honour for him and we wish him the best of luck!
