Teamwork in Action
The last few weeks have been extremely challenging with many staff absent due to COVID and other illnesses and family events. We have had 30-40 staff away each day over the past two weeks and have been unable to find relief staff to cover absences of teachers, teacher aides and ancillary staff due to the challenges across the state.
I want to acknowledge and thank our students for their resilience during multiple teacher changes and parents for your support. We know teacher changes can be difficult for some little ones, and we appreciate the kindness and goodwill shown by parents during these challenges.
I would also like to acknowledge our fabulous staff who have all jumped in to support one another, teaching other classes, covering extra duties and supporting unwell colleagues. Our teachers have not had their planning and preparation time for a few weeks as we have not been able to cover them with so many absences. They have also been doing assessment, marking, planning for Term 2 and parent teacher interviews. I am so grateful to work with such a wonderful staff and supportive community!
School Photos
Our 2022 School Photos will be held from Wednesday 27 April – Thursday 28 April. Over the past few days your child/ren should have received a school photo envelope which they should bring on the day of their photo. Envelopes for siblings can be picked up from the office Friday or early next term. Sibling photos will be held both mornings before school.
We all Belong
On Friday we celebrate our theme this term of ‘We all belong @Team Mango’! We encourage all students to wear something that shows a group they belong to. This may be a cultural group, sport group, dance group, scouts, family group, interest group… The options are endless!
The purpose of the day is for all students to dress in clothes that show their group belonging. If you or your child are stuck choosing a group, please remember that in our school community everyone belongs, so students can proudly wear their uniforms if they wish.
Fancy Bonnet Parade
On Friday 1 April we will celebrate with our Prep - Year 2 students at a Fancy Bonnet Parade at 8:30am in the piazza. Students will make their fancy bonnet at school. Parents are invited to join us if you have no COVID symptoms. We look forward to celebrating our Term 1 success!
Cross Country Success
Congratulations to all Year 3-6 students who participated in the Senior Cross Country last Friday. We are proud of their efforts and sportsmanship! Special thanks to our PE staff for their coordination, the staff who assisted on the day and all the parents who joined us.
Unfortunately, our Junior Cross Country had to be cancelled this morning due to the rain forecast. We have rescheduled this for tomorrow and hope that the weather is kind! Parents are welcome to join us.

Term 1 Celebrations
It has been a very strange Term 1 with a delayed start, flood and managing COVID cases in the community. We are proud of our achievements. Highlights include the following.
- Supporting 184 new preppies and just over 100 new Year 1-6 students to settle into our school community.
- Welcoming many new families and students into our school and forming new friendships and connections. Such kindness shown by many existing students and families to welcome our new friends!
- Seeing students focus on their learning and improvements in literacy and numeracy.
- Watching our 18 new teachers settle into the school and contribute so positively.
- Securing funding for a new senior playground, multipurpose court with shade, soccer field and entire junior playground re-design and construct.
- Watching our three-story classroom block emerge from the ground!
- Presenting badges to our 2022 Student Leaders and seeing them take up the role with such gusto!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful staff, fabulous students and supportive families for working together to achieve so much this term.
Wishing you all a safe, happy Easter holiday. We look forward to seeing you in Term 2. School resumes on Tuesday 19 April.

World Autism Awareness Day
In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2April as ‘World Autism Awareness Day,’ while many organisations have declared April as “Autism Awareness Month.” These campaigns were created to highlight the world’s need to help understand Autism. Inclusivity and respect are basic human rights and can lead to a society where children and adults with autism can lead their lives without stigma or discrimination.
Organisations run various events and fundraising throughout April to create awareness of Autism. You can Light it up Blue, Hoodie Up or participate in the Walk for Autism and so on. If you are interested in this, a quick internet search will help. Something that everyone can do is to learn about Autism and then consider how you too can embrace diversity and offer support to school members, community members and family members with Autism.
Raising Bright Sparks
Emeritus Professor Miraca Gross (GERRIC, UNSW) says that every child is a gift; every child, irrespective of ability levels has relative strengths and weaknesses; but not every child is gifted. Not everyone is comfortable with the term ‘gifted’; however Professor Françoys Gagné from the University of Quebec in Montreal helps us to understand what it means and how this relates to the dynamic of talent development. He explains, in his Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent (DMGT) that children may develop Natural Abilities within certain intellectual, creative, socioaffective and sensorimotor domains. When these abilities fall within the top ten percent of the general population, Gagné refers to these natural abilities as the ‘Gift’.
One of the critical aspects of DMGT is the Developmental Process which incorporates formal and informal leaning. Gagné maintains that it is necessary for children with Natural Abilities to go through this Developmental Process in order for their natural abilities to become Systematically Developed Skills, which he also refers to as ‘Talents’. These talents may be exhibited in a variety of fields such as academic, arts, business, leisure, sports and technology. Based on Gagné’s model, an individual can be gifted without being talented (because the talents have not developed), but cannot be talented without first being gifted.
Gagné believes that there are catalysts that can impact positively or negatively upon the Developmental Process. There are Intrapersonal Catalysts, such as temperament, personality traits, well-being, motivation, self-management, effort and emotions that influence the development of the child’s natural ability. This means that a student may show a natural ability with music and have the fine motor dexterity to play an instrument; however if the student does not enjoy music, is not motivated and will not expend effort in practice s/he will not develop a talent in music. Alternatively, a student who demonstrates an early natural aptitude with numbers, is interested in Mathematical concepts, is motivated and expends effort in learning this subject, a Mathematical talent will develop.
Similarly, Environmental Catalysts can have a positive or negative impact upon the development of talent. Environmental catalysts consist of cultural, social and family influences; the impact of parents and teachers; the provisions of school programs designed to enhance talent development, specific encounters, competitions and events. Gagné highlights the role of people, resources and opportunities in the student’s life. When a gifted student has parents who support the development of talent by communicating with teachers and providing additional opportunities for talent enhancing activities, talent will be nurtured. If the family, culture, peer group or school does not support the particular talent field, then development will not be enhanced.
Gagné explains there is a chance factor in which genetics a child inherits; an individual’s temperament; people encountered and the community in which the student is raised. He stresses that while chance plays a part, the development of talent is not a matter of “luck” but rather the dynamic that exists between the Natural Abilities, Intrapersonal and Environmental Catalysts and how this impacts upon the Developmental Process. The development of talent depends not only on natural ability but also what the family, school, culture and other students contribute to the developmental process.

Focus of the Week
The Care Class focus delivered on Friday, is ‘Everyone Belongs’. Below are the routines and expectations that will be discussed during Care Class and will also be revised in the classrooms throughout Week 1 Term 2. Students will be learning about diversity, celebrating differences, including everyone as well as learning our school song “The Mango Hill Way”.
Students are encouraged to wear clothing from a group that they feel connected to, to show that they belong. This may be a sporting team, family, friendship group, or hobby that they participate in with others.
Of our Four Cares (Care for Self, Care for Others, Care for Learning, Care for our School Environment) learning about Respect and Belonging is about Caring for Others.
A fabulous book to read with your children is Whoever You Are by Mem Fox. Or alternatively you can view it here via this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cA0Gl_wjgRQ
Updates to the Administration of Medication in Schools
The Department of Education have implemented a new procedure for the Administration of Medication in schools starting Term 2, 2022. New forms are required to be completed for all students that require medication to be administered or self-administered.
Information for health practitioners and parents and carers can be found here.
Consent to administer medication can be found here.
Consent forms will need to be completed and returned to school before medication can be administered upon a student's return to school in Term 2.
As per current procedures all medication is required to have a Doctor's label and over the counter medications are required to have a letter from the prescribing health practitioner. If your child requires medication at a routine time (e.g. 11am every day), the pharmacy label attached to the medication provides the school with the instructions from the health practitioner needed to safely administer the medication. Please read the information for parents and carers provided and if needed provide a copy to your health practitioner to ensure the correct labelling is supplied.
Safety in the Carpark
A reminder that our children’s safety is our number one priority. When lining up to pick up your child in the afternoon at the Bonnet Parade Lookout area, please do not pull in the area where the witches hats are situated, especially close to the crossing as this impairs the view of the crossing supervisors. It is important to stay in line so we have an orderly pick up. Although it make take a few minutes longer, can you put a price on a child’s life. It is just not worth the risk to speed or cut in on others for the sake of saving a few minutes.
I would also like to remind parents to ensure students buckle up before driving off and babies and toddlers should be properly secured and supervised in the carpark.
Prep News!
Let’s wrap this term up!
We made it, Prep friends! We finished your first ever term of Big School. Well done.
Has it been a tricky term to navigate with all the events thrown at us? Yes.
Have we given it our all, learned heaps and made new friends? Also yes!
We can now:
* pack up when the bell goes (a skill that brings our teachers joy!)
* approach the playground space with confidence
* line up with our class
* navigate our way around the school with our class
* draw detailed pictures that tell a story
* write our names and many letters
* count and subitise
* unpack our own bags and organise our own lunches
* turn the pages in books, hold books the right way up and begin to read.
Well done Prep parents for supporting your child to be their best. Thank you to our Prep teachers and aides for working hard to help our Prep students thrive in Term 1.
Have a wonderful, relaxing, fun-filled holiday. Make sure you try hard to enjoy some new experiences or return to old favourites. We can’t wait to see what we can do by the end of Term 2.
Have a lovely week

Four Cares Celebration-Team Mango!
The children in Year 1 have been working hard in their classes to earn points towards their Four Cares Celebration. Points are earned when the class work together based on the term’s theme. This term’s theme is Team Mango with children rewarded for their efforts working together as a team. Classes keep track of their points in all different ways but most commonly the classes in Year 1 track their progress by putting marbles or pompoms into a jar.
Look at all the great team work from 1J with all their pompoms. The big pompoms are for the big wins while the regular sized pompoms are used to acknowledge everyday acts of teamwork.
Our specialist teachers also acknowledge how classes work together in their lessons giving the classes a score out of ten. Look at the terrific work in 1O with those scores! Go Team Mango!
When the jar is full… it’s time to celebrate! This week our classes have planned picnic lunches outside, extra plays on the playground, special movie afternoons and other fun activities to celebrate together.
Ask your child how their class is celebrating Team Mango this week.
We All Belong Day- Friday 1 April
This Friday is We All Belong day. Students are welcome to wear something that represents their cultural background, family, team or group they are part of (including this school). During Care Class our classes will meet up with their buddy class to share about what they are wearing and what they belong to. During this Care Class, students will get the chance to listen to our new school song The Mango Hill Way. We can’t wait to learn all the words and share this song with our community!
Looking Forward to Term 2 Learning
Thank you for your attendance at parent teacher meetings this term as teachers celebrate your child’s learning so far this year with you and share some next steps for Term 2. The Year 2 teachers and I have already met with our Heads of Department (Curriculum) and have unpacked the new learning ahead but also, the learning that students will be able to transfer across terms and units. We want our students to be able to apply and use what they have learned in one context and time to other contexts and times. For example, in 2B students used Cafe Writing as an opportunity to write with the stimulus being "spooky" music. Students incorporated a scared or worried feeling throughout their writing. They had learned how to do this when writing their recounts this term. I attach a few photos!

Celebrations
Classes have been celebrating the successful achievement of their Team Mango – We all Belong! goal this week. Well done to our Year 2 students. Fancy Bonnet Parade and We all Belong Day await on Friday. Students have made or are making bonnets in class. We know that some families and students may wish to do a bonnet independently at home – we are already seeing some of them. If that is the case for you, your child is welcome to bring and wear their bonnet at the parade. Details of We all Belong Day are included in this newsletter.
Cross Country
Our Year 2 students will now be participating in the Cross Country tomorrow morning. We look forward to seeing those who can make it on the morning.
Take Care
Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday over these next two weeks. Please take care!

Happy Holidays
What a term! while this has been an unusual start to the school year our Year 3 students have really worked hard to showcase their best learning as part of Team Mango. This term they worked really hard to write a persuasive letter that convinces their reader to agree with them. It was fantastic to read the creative arguments they put together and how they explained their argument with added detail and persuasive language. There may be lots of parents being asked about a new pet or more iPad time these holidays!
We also had our Artist in Residence last week which was an absolute delight. Our students thoroughly enjoyed spending time with our Artist in Residence, Wendy Rix. It was a wonderful opportunity for all to learn more about the indigenous art techniques and history.
Year 3 families I hope you have a lovely, safe holiday. I really look forward to seeing our students return in the new term and hearing about their holiday adventures.
Have a great week

Year 4 News
What a BIG last week of Term 1! Over the past week, students have been finishing off their units of work, competing in the cross country, meeting with their buddy classes and taking part in class celebrations for representing Team Mango this term.
All term, Year 4 students have been working with each other, using their Bump-It-Up walls and the feedback on their scales to achieve their learning goals. Many students have invited me to read their writing this week and I have been blown away by the creativity on display. I have also enjoyed visiting classrooms as they work to solve a range of Maths problems, using the skills and understanding they have developed so far this year. All of our students should be proud of the progress that they have made already in 2022!
Throughout the week I was lucky enough to catch 4H and 4G during their science lesson. As a part of the lesson, they were conducting an experiment to model the pollination of plants by insects. Students placed plates of jam on the ground and observed an increasing number of ants come to take the jam away. I was impressed with the scientific skills displayed by students as they recorded observations and collected numerical data to identify patterns.
Throughout the term, our school has been promoting the theme of Team Mango. Our Year 4 classes have set targets as a class to show ‘Team Mango’ and have tracked their progress during the term. Some classes have even set mini-targets where they have regularly celebrated their progress. It was awesome to see 4G celebrating reaching one of their target scores recently, by bringing their favourite soft toy to school!
It has been great to see and hear about some of the Year 4 classes meeting up with their Year 2 and 3 buddy classes this week. Buddy classes meet once or twice a term to build connections across the school. This is a great leadership opportunity for Year 4 students as they work with and act as role models to the younger students.
Finally, congratulations to all students on their participation in the Senior Cross Country last week. I was so proud of everyone who competed, giving it their best effort!
Wishing all of you a safe and happy school holidays. I look forward to seeing everyone again for a bigger and better Term 2!

Have a super week

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
After what has been such an unusual term it has been great spending time with classes as they represent their learning over the last week. It has been peak assessment time in all of our classrooms. Despite being such an important time of the term it has been wonderful observing students connecting with one another to provide peer feedback. We know from research that peer feedback has a huge impact on learning outcomes. Well done students on your collaboration! It has also been great observing students using their Bump-It-Up Walls to assist them in taking the learning from the term and putting it into action for their assessment. Teachers and students have worked hard all term, and for a number of years, in developing this strategy to support learners as they work through the teaching, learning and assessment cycle. Well done Year 5 and 6 on you resilience this term. We look forward to a smoother Term 2.
Halogen Leadership Conference
This week our Year 6 Student Leaders ventured into South Bank to participate in the Halogen Leadership Conference. This is a conference we attend each year and marks a pivotal learning step for our young leaders. This year our students had the opportunity to listen to some amazing community leaders and listen to their leadership journey. Roma commented that "Kate Campbell gave such great life advice for leadership, she was great to listen to". What a great opportunity for our leaders! We look forward to hearing their reflections from the day and how they enact these learnings within their own leadership.

ANZAC Day Assembly and Pine Rivers RSL Commemoration
Despite being a few weeks away we are looking forward to planning our ANZAC Day Assembly and participating in the Pine Rivers RSL Commemoration. Our school parade will be on Friday 22 April at 9:00am with parents welcome to attend. On Monday 25 April our school has been invited to participate in the traditional Pine Rivers RSL Commemoration March. This year places are limited to 50 students per school. This year we will be inviting all of our Year 6 Student Leaders and Year 4 and 5 Student Council representatives. More information will come early next term regarding both of these important events.
Have a good week

Learning in Technology
Students this term have been using design thinking and technologies to generate and produce designed solutions for authentic needs and opportunities. They have also been using computational thinking and information systems to define, design and implement digital solutions.
In Prep and Year 1, students have been designing environments and enclosures for animals to suit their needs. In Year 2, students have been programming beebots using a sequence of steps and decisions and Year 3 students have been planning a sequence of steps to create an interactive game using Scratch Jnr. In Year 4, students are creating a KeyNote presentation on ‘Mango Hill State School’ to an audience of their choice and in Year 5, students are designing a product that will support an animal in the local environment. In Year 6, students have been designing a sustainable garden. We look forward to seeing students’ final designs, solutions and games this week.
NAPLAN Online
For families of students in Year 3 and Year 5, there will be a parent information session for NAPLAN online from 8.45am on Friday 29th April, in the school hall. If you have any questions regarding NAPLAN online, but cannot make it to the information session, please email your child’s classroom teacher, myself (dxobr0@eq.edu.au) or Ben Mills (bxmil3@eq.edu.au).
Have a fantastic week

MHSS Senior Cross Country Review
What a huge end to Term 1 for PE with our MHSS Senior Cross County completed last Friday.
Congratulations to Barton house who are crowned the 2022 MHSS Cross Country Champions. The overall points for our Cross Country Carnival were;
A big thank you must go to our wonderful ground team for all their work in setting up and to all the staff for their assistance on the day. We were also very fortunate to have so many wonderful Year 6 student leaders help out across the day. I am sure they loved the opportunity to be involved but their help made the carnival so much more enjoyable for the students and easier for MHSS staff as well.

30 students have been selected in the Mango Hill Cross Country team to compete at the upcoming Pine Rivers District Cross Country trials. These students are aged from 10-12 years and will complete either a 2km or 3km course at Pine Rivers Park. Students will complete training before school in Term 2 in preparation for what is a very challenging Cross Country day. Well done and good luck to the Mango Hill team.
Pine Rivers District Sporting Trials (10-12yr Old’s)
Pine Rivers District School Sport offers 10-12 Year old students the opportunity to compete at Metropolitan North trials and carnivals, with the possibility of selection into teams competing at State events. Students must be nominated by their school in order to attend a district trial or carnival.
Students who express an interest to trial can collect forms from our PE office. They will be given the Pine Rivers District forms and the relevant trial information. Completed district forms are to be returned to the PE office by the due date. Once the forms are collated, students will be nominated for the trial. Forms are then handed back to students and must then be taken to the coach/manager at the District Trials. Students will NOT be allowed to trial if district forms are not handed in completed. Unless specifically organised by the school, it is the parents’ responsibility to transport students to and from district trials.
Most Pine Rivers District trials are limited to students turning 11 or 12 years of age and who are considered at a high level in the sport e.g. Div. 1 or A Grade. - AFL
- Basketball
- Cricket
- Football (Soccer)
- Golf
- Hockey
- Netball
- Rugby League
- Rugby Union
- Softball
- Squash
- Tennis

Mango Hill can nominate up to three students for each district sport trial. If more than three students wish to be nominated Mango Hill will select the three best candidates for the trial. The selection of these students may be either based on past performances/current club form or through a selection trial at school.
If you are interested in your child trialling for Pine Rivers District more information can be obtained from the Mango Hill State School newsletter, with regular trial updates listed. You may also obtain trial information from the Pine Rivers District School Sport Website https://prdss1012yr.teamapp.com/?_webpage=v1 or Mr Nick Hills - nhill96@eq.edu.au
