Wakakirri Success
Congratulations to our Wakakirri team on their outstanding success last night with a wonderful performance. We are so proud of their commitment to do their best.
Special thanks to Mrs Kostoglou and Ms Sheehan for their efforts leading this work. Also thank you to Mr Vlieg and all the parents who assisted on the day.
Facilities Improvements
I am so very excited by all the improvements we have achieved over the past 12 months. These include
- Fully air conditioning all classrooms, staff rooms, the Hub and the Lab
- Opening of our $9 million Gigum Hall
- Upgrading our bandwidth and wireless network
- Installing solar panels
- Building additional shade in our Look Out Zone
- Installing new bike racks
- Building over 100 more carparks
- Developing a new stop, drop, go area at the back of the school
- Laying artificial turf in the prep play area
- Making changes to the traffic flow in the front car park.
We also have a number of projects underway including
- Construction of a three-storey building with 16 more classrooms, an under croft and a new multi-purpose court (due late February next year)
- Refurbishing the old hall into temporary classrooms for next year (including carpet and air-conditioning). Once we move into our new three-storey building, this space will become a multi-use space for professional learning.
- Completing the detailed design of the junior play area which will include a junior oval and additional play equipment (out to tender soon)
- Progressing the detailed design of a pathway to link park in Bonnet Parade with Kinsellas Road East.
We are excited by these improvements and look forward to striving to offer world-class facilities for our students.

School Opinion Survey Results
Last week we received our School Opinion Results with some wonderful celebrations. Thank you to the parents, students and staff who completed the survey to provide feedback to help us improve. We will use this information to help us gauge satisfaction levels and plan for areas we can improve.
The positive highlights are below.
Have a wonderful week

Focus of the Week
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Curiosity and Wonder’. We will be consolidating this focus throughout next week.
Throughout Week 4, teachers will be helping students how to use their sense of curiosity and wonder to explore every day and new environments. Students will appreciate the good and beauty in friends, family and their environment. Explore the environment and discover things that bring them enjoyment. They will ask questions and investigate topics and activities of interest.
A great video to watch with your children around Curiosity and Wonder:
“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and trying new things, because we are curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” – Walt Disney
“Curiosity is natural to the soul of man and interesting objects have a powerful influence on our affections.” – Daniel Boone
Kindy Carpark
A reminder that the Kindy carparks in the front carpark are ONLY for Kindy staff and families. Please do not park in this area.
Instrumental Music Recruitment 2022
All information and expression of interest forms were sent home to current Year 2 & Year 3 families last week. If you child is interested in the Instrumental Music program for 2022 then please return the forms to the school office by Thursday 21 October.
Student of the Week
Don't Forget Your Hat!
School photos this week and our Preppies looked fabulous in their school uniforms. Thank you to parents for ensuring your child was in full school uniform for their school photo. We’d love to see all students continue to wear all of the correct uniform items each day; all black school shoes and correct colour hair ties and bows.
We’re doing a bit of a reminder blitz for hats right now in Prep as there are a small group of students in each room who consistently come to school without their hat. In our Queensland weather, wearing a hat outdoors is important for safety. Please support us, by checking your child is wearing their hat to and from school. It’s great for sun safety and also to ensure they leave the house with their hat on and they return to their house with their hat on!
In English we are working hard to improve our sentences when we write and to ensure we are reading for meaning in our reading groups. In maths, we are working hard to solve open ended questions. Sometimes, there’s many correct answers to problems! Take a look at our Prep M friends, who were very excited to solve an open-ended problem about animals and legs.

Have a lovely week.

All About Money
It has been an absolute joy seeing the excitement of our little learners as they continue to explore their money unit. Classes have been super busy not only learning about Australian coins, sequencing their values but also calculating costs and change through role play. Students have created their own little stores within their classrooms and have loved pretending to play shops. The language rich conversations and application of their knowledge and understanding through playing shops has been a valuable way for students to consolidate their knowledge and understanding of money along with learning from each other. Look at these happy little faces, what joy!

Have an excellent week.

Year 3 News
Clarity and Connection to Empower and Extend. This has been our vision at MHSS for 2021 and it is certainly something that is living and breathing across Year 3.
In Year 3, our classes all start with an opportunity to connect with each other and the teacher using a greeting circle. During this time, students each have the opportunity to share something and set themselves up for a positive day. Our teachers often use this as a ‘check-in’ to begin the day and to ensure each student is recognised and supported. Throughout the day, our teachers continue to connect with the students before and after break times, setting them up for positive experiences and supporting them to solve problems.
Clarity in learning is being established in all classrooms with clear learning intentions, success criteria and specific ‘next steps’ for each student as they work towards improving on their scales.
This week, I visited 3T during a Maths lesson where they were learning to calculate change. While each student had an individual goal, the class were working collaboratively and supporting each other through peer tutoring to ensure they were all achieving the learning outcome. Well done to Ms Turnbull and 3T on setting up a classroom culture where all students are empowered and extended according to their individual needs.

Have a great week.

Off on Camp
And we’re off! As you read this, Year 4 will be having the time of their lives on camp at Runaway Bay. Students have been well-prepared by their teachers at school and we know parents have been busy doing an awesome amount of preparation at home. Parents, rest assured. All of our wonderful staff who are at camp for either the entire camp or part of the camp will be supervising our children with care and giving lots of gentle reminders too.
This week, I spoke with some of the students about what they were looking forward to the most about camp. Check out a few of the responses below. Look out for photos on Facebook as camp progresses.
Some of our Year 4 students are staying at school and are being welcomed into Year 6 classrooms. We are excited for them too as they will get to meet new friends in those classes and spend a few days as “honourary” Year 6 students.
Finally, huge thanks to our parents for signing papers, submitting forms, going shopping, overseeing the packing etc and of course to our class teachers – Ms Black, Ms Cosmo, Ms Baker, Ms Sheehan, Ms Goodall, Ms Peno, Ms Evans, Ms Crase, Mr Thomas and Ms Vos – our Inclusive Learning Teacher, Ms Ferguson and our supporting staff of Ms Rayne, Ms Stig, Ms Brown and Ms Ecker, for their commitment. We are all thrilled to experience camp with your children.
Have a fantastic week.

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
It has been another great week to be in Year 5 and 6 classrooms this week. This week I had the pleasure of working in 6V. Mr Vlieg and his students picked a question from their data pre-test that they struggled with and then did some focussed instruction to bump up their understanding of expected frequency. It was great observing students collaborate with each other as they supported one another to improve their knowledge. It was also great observing the interaction between Mr Vlieg as he guided his students with open-ended, probing questions to draw out the knowledge of the students. I also had the pleasure of working with 6O as they developed their knowledge of number patterns. Students collaborated together to model a response for their peers and as a class developed a co-constructed success criteria for the lesson. Students then continued to collaborated with one another in representing their understanding of the task. What was observable in both classes was the connections between the students and teachers and how this helped create a positive, learning culture. Well done 6V and 6O!

Student Leadership 2022
As our school continues to grow we have reflected upon our student leadership positions to ensure that the full diversity of our school is recognised as well as our cares and values. Student leadership forms such a vital role in ensuring students have voice and agency within the school. Attached are all the leadership positions for 2022. Teachers will go through these positions with their students this week so that students are fully informed of the responsibilities of being a leader. Students will then be presented with their Student Leader Passport. To be considered for a captaincy position students must complete their passport and hand it into the office by Friday 5 November. From there Ms Egan and myself will interview the candidates on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11November and also get our Year 5 students to shortlist their selections. The successful candidates who make it through the interview and initial voting stages will then present their speech to the Year 5 and 4 students on Tuesday 23 and Thursday 25November. The Year 4 and 5 students and teaching staff will vote and we will announce all of our captain positions at the Year 5 award ceremony on Tuesday 7December.
In previous years all students that completed their passport received a Student Leader badge. To add some responsibility to the attainment of the badge, as of 2022 students who wish to receive their badge will have to commit to two or more of the responsibilities outlined in the attached document. This is therefore ensuring all of our captains and leaders contribute to the positive Mango Hill State School culture. Good luck Year 5s.
Have a terrific week.

Student Wellbeing
We celebrate Children’s Week from 23 to 30 October with the theme for 2021 being ‘Children have the right to choose their own friends and safely connect with others’.
Choosing friends and safely connecting with others is an essential part of a child’s growth and learning. With the right guidance, children and young people can choose friends and social connections that will help them flourish in their personal and social development.
At Mango Hill, students have the opportunity to develop the skills to connect with friends in their weekly care class where students spend time exploring ‘Problem Solving in Play’, ‘Filling our Buckets’, ‘The Four Cares in the Playground’, ‘Using the High 5’ and ‘Communication with our Friends in the playground’. Students also have the opportunity to attend a variety of lunchtime clubs to help them connect with others who share the same interests.
Have a great week

Accelerated Reader
The beginning of Term 4 has seen a flurry of activity in Accelerated Reader. We are so excited to welcome students to the Hub every day (before and after school and as part of lunchtime clubs) to borrow and quiz once they are on AR. Don’t forget that a library bag really helps to care for our precious books and is a great example of Care for the Environment.
Congratulations to Temperance, Charlie, Amelia and Lewis who all recently reached one million words! We are very impressed by all of their efforts and continued commitment to reading! As you can see from the smiles on their faces they are very proud of their achievements!
We have added their photos to our special display so everyone can join in the joy!

Happy Reading
