Connection & Clarity
We continue our 2021 focus on Connection & Clarity to empower and extend.

Recently our staff were involved in two hours of professional learning to support our goal of ‘Clarity of teaching strategies so that students know how to succeed’. Our staff learnt more about strategies for teaching to help students develop strong thinking routines, how to collaborate through Kagan structures and how to use iPads to both consume and create information.
Our teachers also work collaboratively each week monitoring student work samples against the curriculum standards and planning for improvement. I am so proud of the growth mindset of staff as they learn new ways of teaching to ensure students are engaged in purposeful learning and know how to succeed and reach their potential.

Parent Teacher Interviews
In the last two weeks of Term 3 or the first two weeks of Term 4, all parents will be offered the opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher at a parent teacher interview. The booking for these interviews is now open via SOBS and will close on Thursday 2 September. Please follow the link below to book a time for this interview.
https://eq.sobs.com.au/pt3/parent.php?schoolid=70371
Further information about how to book is included in the attachment below. We look forward to collaborating and partnering with parents to provide positive outcomes for each child.
Book Week Celebrations
We invite all students to dress up for our Book Week celebrations tomorrow. Students are welcome to dress up as their favourite book character and bring the book along to share with others. Alternatively, students are welcome to wear their pyjamas and share a book they love to snuggle up with.
Parents are welcome to visit the classroom at drop off as the children share their costumes and favourite books and characters. At 9am, students ONLY will visit our new Gigum Hall to see a live performance.
My costume is all sorted below. Can you guess which book character I will be?
From Tuesday 7 September to Friday 10 September we will have our Gigum Arts Fest. Initially this was planned for just Friday evening however with such large numbers we see an opportunity to adapt the festival to allow all students and families time to visit, see the art work, bid on the auction and partake in all things art. Each class will be allocated a time to visit during the four days and parents and carers are invited to attend at this time if they would like to see your child’s art display. We will also open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon from 2:45-4pm to allow families to stay and play, visit the arts fest and have a picnic. This will be instead of the Friday evening event, prioritising our health by ensuring we are not gathering in a huge group. Further details will be sent next week! We look forward to a wonderful celebration of the Arts!
Look at some of these wonderful pieces of art created by students. We can’t wait to auction them!

School Review
Next week we will have our School Review. Every school has a review every four years to help guide their strategic planning. The review was postponed a few weeks ago due to the lockdown. Some parents have volunteered to meet with the reviewers in a small group session on Tuesday at 2:10-2:40pm or Wednesday from 8:30-9am. If you would like to participate in a small group session please email Vanessa Abbott on vabbo5@eq.edu.au. We are looking forward to the review team’s findings celebrating our success and suggesting improvement strategies.
Student free day
A reminder that next week on Friday 3 September will be a student free day.
Have a wonderful week.
Tracy Egan
Focus of the Week
The focus of the week introduced last Friday and continued throughout this week is ‘Resilience’. Resilience is generally regarded as the ability to cope with and bounce back after adversity and this can extend from day to day challenges through to life changing events. Resilience develops when children experience challenges and learn to deal with them positively.
Learning about resilience focuses on Caring for self by growing and demonstrating resilience. It is a continuum, and something that can change over time. We can all learn ways of becoming more resilient.
“Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.” ― Nelson Mandela
Father’s Day online store
On Sunday 5 September we celebrate Father’s Day.
Our wonderful P & C have set up an online store for students to order their gifts for Dad, Grandad, Pop or whoever they love and wish to celebrate.
Your children can jump online and order something lovely for Dad and it will be delivered to their classroom later next week for them to take home. The online stall is ready to go for our school community to start using immediately.
https://mhss-pc-association.square.site/
Sales can be accepted until 8pm Tuesday 31 August to allow us two more days to get orders to students.
Congratulations to all our Students of the Week! These students have demonstrated the MHSS values of respect, commitment, innovation, excellence and teamwork. We are so proud of you all!

It’s been a week of celebrations in Prep.
We have so many students who can write! They have enjoyed creating their posters for Book Week, to share their reasons why they love the book The Very Cranky Bear.
In Number, we have so many students who have a solid understanding of numbers to 15 (and many beyond). We’ve been working hard to learn how to count large groups, to know which is more and which is less, to recognise errors and know how to fix them.
And before school, our undercover area is filled with students who still want to walk themselves into school! They gained some wonderful skills of independence over the past two weeks and we are watching them say, “See ya mum and dad, I’ve got this” as they walk into school. So impressive!
An invitation will come home this week for our Father's Day celebrations to be held next week. We’re an inclusive school and we know there are many different types of families. Any loved one accompanying your child will be welcomed. We do ask that older siblings wait in their own areas before school and leave this occasion for their Prep sibling to enjoy.

Have a lovely week.

Working Together
We have been working so very hard in Year 2 to represent and explain how to solve a multi-step problem. It has been tricky work but we are super lucky to have each other to identify the important information in the word problem, represent our thinking in multiple ways and explain our thinking using mathematical language. This week I was lucky enough to work with some Year 2 friends to have a go at solving one of their multi-step problems. My partner and I did get a little stuck on one how to represent our multiplication problem as an array, however we used Mrs Olsen’s amazing Bump It Up wall to help us be successful. 2J found it super helpful to use one of the examples off the learning wall to help us know what to do.

After School Routines
Parents, in the afternoon please remind all students that they are to wait in the Junior Under Cover Area till the 2:45pm bell if they are waiting for a sibling, parent or the bus. At 2:45pm students are allowed to transition to their meeting points, but it is essential that they remain in the supervised spaces till then. Every afternoon the Junior Undercover Area is supervised by our teacher aides who will wait with the students till that senior bell goes. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Have an excellent week.

Year 3 News
Writing, reading, fractions, telling time, writing sentences in Italian and using models to observe how the Earth’s rotation affects shadow length. This is just some of the learning that I have had the chance to see over the past week in Year 3!
This term in English, students have been practising writing the next part of a novel that they are reading together. They have been working hard at the structure of their stories and using language features effectively to make their writing interesting. This week, students have been publishing their stories. It is wonderful to see what their hard work has produced!
This week Year 3 started a new unit in Maths on fractions. They have started to build their understanding of common fractions and represent them in multiple ways. Learning about fractions can be a lot of fun and very visual. I wonder how many fractions students can identify at home?
This week’s care focus is Resilience. This aligns nicely to our Term 3 theme – Growth Mindset. Students can show resilience and a growth mindset at school by trying something new, attempting a challenging task and applying feedback to make something better. I encourage our Year 3 students every week to consider how they have shown a growth mindset at school and it has been lovely hearing the examples they share.

Book Week
This week is Book Week and we will celebrate with our Book Week dress-up this Thursday. I know all of our teachers have their dress-ups planned and we look forward to seeing our students dress-up as a character from their favourite book too!
Have a great week.

Year 4 News
Our Year 4 students are all showing a Growth Mindset this week. Our Year 4 teachers and students have embraced this term’s theme and are celebrating the power of yet… I haven’t got it… YET! We are focusing on our goals and learning that if we stay the course we will achieve great things.
This has been so evident across all of their learning areas this week. Look at the learners in the photos belows. We see determined mathematicians and readers, some doing an Accelerated Reader quiz, some reading a book of their own choice, and some answering questions about the text. I am including some of the fabulous creations from last week’s “Woolly Works” elective too.

In HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences), students are considering the different perspectives of people within colonial Australia, and comparing these with their own. Students are creating a diary entry, as an eBook, from their chosen perspective.
In anticipation of the Gigum Arts Fest, classes are finalising their art piece (together with their buddy class). I am excited for you to see the amazing works.
Have a fantastic week.

Care for Learning in Year 5 and Year 6
As we continue our learning in Week 7, most Year 5 and 6 classes are heading in to assessment. This is a great time of the term in which students really utilise their writing and maths bump-it-up walls to help improve their work. Students also engage with their peers to help provide peer feedback to support their class mates improve their work. This week in 6T I had the pleasure in working with some students as they participated in a Cultures of Thinking routine. Students participated in Jot Thoughts to work with their peers to brainstorm effective lexical chains that create a persuasive text. Great work 6T! I also had the opportunity to work with 6C as Ms Carlsson and Ms Ray co-taught a lesson on using adverbials and embedding facts into a sentence to increase the persuasiveness of their text. Students really used their star scale to track the learning intention of the lesson and to ensure they were continually using their writing bump-it-up wall to improve their writing.

Have a terrific week.

A conversation can change a life
R U OK? day is coming up fast - Thursday 9 September. R U OK? day inspires and empowers everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them and start a conversation with anyone who may be struggling with life. You don't need to be an expert to reach out - just a good friend and a great listener.
Use these four steps and have a conversation that could change a life:
- Ask R U OK?
- Listen
- Encourage action
- Check in
Before you can look out for others, you need to look out for yourself. And that’s ok. If you're not in the right headspace or you don't think you're the right person to have the conversation, try to think of someone else in their support network who could talk to them.
To help you decide whether you’re ready to start a meaningful conversation, ask yourself:
- Am I ready?
- Am I prepared?
- Picked my moment?
For more information see: https://www.ruok.org.au/
Have a great week.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
Don’t forget that this is the last week to submit your Reading Record for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. All forms should be sent to the Hub by Friday afternoon. Thank you to the 100s of students who participated in this year’s challenge.
Book Week
We are so excited to celebrate all things associated with books and reading this week. Our Book Week Competition has been extended to the end of this week, so everyone has one last chance to submit their entry. We have so many fabulous entries on display in the Hub so make sure you pop on down to see them soon. We have Harry Potter’s suitcase, maps, posters, handmade TV viewers, dioramas, posters and so much more!
One of our frequent Hub visitors suggested that the students should vote for the winning entries, so later this week we will set up a voting scheme. Come to visit to vote for your favourite entry!
This week we are also looking forward to seeing all of the special book week costumes and sharing our love of books at a special parade on Thursday morning. To celebrate we have invited some performers from the Ho Hum Improv Group – we can’t wait to see the musical story they will create from ideas provided by students.

Accelerated Reader
Congratulations to Shagun who last week reached the amazing milestone of 1 million words in AR. Shagun is an avid reader and has been working hard all year. We were very excited to add her photo to our special Millionaire’s Display in the Hub.
Well done to all those who are also working hard to reach their goals this term. There is still plenty of time to reach your goals so don’t forget to keep borrowing and reading! Book Week is a great time to read a book or two or three!
Have a fabulous week.

Did you know we offer a choice of Sushi which can be found on flexischools. As we have to pre order the sushi, orders do need to be placed by 8:30am Thursday
Indian Spiced Potato & Cauliflower Curry with Pulao Rice is back on our menu.
Lightly spiced with turmeric, cumin and curry powder, this vegan curry has chunky potatoes and cauliflower in a tomato and coconut sauce over fragrant pulao rice.
Greetings! Did you know that the uniform shop has long sleeve polo shirts? As the weather is starting to warm up, these can be a great option when it's a little too warm for the jacket, but still a bit too cool for short sleeves. They also offer great sun protection. We have a variety of sizes in store, or you can purchase online.
Online purchases can be easily collected from our shop or sent to your child's class. If you would like it sent to class, just send an email to mangohill@wearitto.com.au with your order number, child's name and class, and we can get it to them.
To keep in line with the current guidelines, we need to have only 1 customer in the store at a time to keep in line with the distancing requirements.
Uniform shop hours during the term are:
Monday 8:00am - 10:30am
Wednesday 1:30pm - 3:30pm
Friday 8:00am - 10:30am
