We have had another wonderful week at Mango Hill State School. Yesterday students participated in the Spelling Bee spelling test. A huge thank you to our students for participating in this. Spelling Bee sponsorship cards are due on 30 May. Please deposit your funds via the P&C Qkr! App. If you have cash, please bring the cash in on Wednesday 28 May or Friday 30 May between 8am and 9am. This is a major fundraiser for our P&C and your anticipated support is appreciated. Spelling can *beeee* fun!
Thank you to staff who assisted with making this a fun event by dressing in theme!

Eisteddfod News
On May 14, the Mango Hill State School Eisteddfod team delivered a stellar performance at the Sunshine Coast Eisteddfod, showcasing their talent, dedication and teamwork. The 21 member team brought their A-game, securing first place in the Jazz and second place for their Lyrical dance. Practising just one lunch break and one morning a week, the team’s success is a testament to their hard work, focus and passion for dance. Under the guidance of their teacher, Ms Kostoglou, they’ve worked on their skills, performing routines with energy and expression that wowed the audience. Congratulations to the Eisteddfod team for their outstanding performance. We are looking forward to the next eisteddfod at the Brisbane Performing Arts Challenge in June. A huge thank you to Ms Kostoglou for the outstanding work she does.
Long Jump Pit
Last week, we were incredibly lucky to have one of our amazing parents, Brett Maxwell, who owns and operates Max’d Contracting, generously donate his time and expertise to help transform our long jump pit. This is a project the school has been looking to complete for a number of years. Partnering with our PE team for a working bee, Brett spent over 10 hours – including nearly 6 hours on his digger – to completely renovate the area. Thanks to his hard work, we now have a beautiful, professionally finished long jump pit that all our students can enjoy on sports and athletics days. We are so appreciative of Brett’s contribution and the pride he’s helped bring to our school facilities. Thank you, Brett, for making a lasting impact on our school community!

Spelling Bee
All spelling bee cards will need to be returned to your child's class teacher by Friday 30 May to be eligible for the fantastic prizes!

Focus of the Week
The Care Class focus of the week is Care for Environment and we will be learning to be aware of the expectations during specialist lessons.
At Mango Hill State School, we are lucky to have amazing learning experiences. We get to be dancers, musicians, artists, language lovers, scientists, athletics stars, technology gurus and historians. When we Care for Environment, we are not only thinking about walking on the paths or putting our rubbish in the bin, but we are also thinking about our learning environment and how we can make sure that all spaces within Mango Hill State School are respected and valued.
You may like to speak with your child about their favourite specialist lessons and how many specialist points they got this week.
Reading at Mango
Last week we unpacked ‘The Big 6’, this week we will narrow in on phonemic awareness.
Phonemic awareness: the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) within words
Manipulating the sounds in words includes blending, stretching, or otherwise changing words. Children can demonstrate phonemic awareness in several ways, including:
- recognizing which words in a set of words begin with the same sound
(“Bell, bike, and boy all have /b/ at the beginning.”)
- isolating and saying the first or last sound in a word
(“The beginning sound of dog is /d/.” “The ending sound of sit is /t/.”)
- combining, or blending the separate sounds in a word to say the word
(“/m/, /a/, /p/ – map.”)
- breaking, or segmenting a word into its separate sounds
(“up – /u/, /p/.”)
Crossing Supervisors
Calling all parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and community members. We are urgently looking for more Crossing Supervisors to help our students and families get across the road before and after school safely.
This is a paid casual job and hours of paid work would be 7:45 am- 8:45 am and 2:30 pm- 3:15 pm. Days are flexible.
If you are interested in joining our team please email aglee39@eq.edu.au
Please note that you must have or be willing to obtain a Blue Card, complete a Criminal History Check, and pass a medical clearance.
P&C News
The next P&C fundraising event will be for the State of Origin on 28 May 2025. This will be a 'wear your team colours' day and each student who chooses to participate will be asked to donate a gold coin.
In addition to this, the Canteen will have special State of Origin meal packs for $10. These meal packs must be pre-orders and will include a mini pizza (choose from either cheese or ham and cheese), garlic bread, a popper, and a choice of a blue or maroon cupcake. Ordering for these meal packs will be open from 14 May and close on 23 May 2025.

iPads in Prep
In Semester 2, Prep students will integrate the use of iPads into learning in class. To support families to prepare for this, we are holding an information session on Wednesday 4 June at 5.00-5.30pm in Wandani. Prior to this date, you will receive an email with details of how to set up an iPad for school, the information session, and contact details if you need support.
Geckos Wildlife Incursion
Last week we were delighted to welcome a range of animals to visit our Prep classes. Our students learned new information about the animals which they will be sharing with others using words and pictures. The children asked some great questions and even enjoyed the opportunity to touch some of the animals. Thank you for supporting this visit to enrich the learning in our English unit this term.
Playgroup News
If you have a Prep aged child for 2026 or younger, why not come along to playgroup every Friday from 8.45-9.30am. All welcome.

All about Seals in 1J
Did you know that seals live throughout the world, with some living in open oceans and some inhabiting coastal waters. This is one of the amazing facts about seal habitats I learnt in 1J today!
Here are some samples of 1J’s informative text planning.

Have a great week everyone!

Maths Update
I hope everyone is having a lovely start to the term.
Students have been working hard to learn how to read the time to the hour, half-hour, and quarter-hour on an analogue clock. If you have an analogue clock or watch at home, please encourage your child to practise by identifying where the hour and minute hands are pointing.

Reminders for the Week
StarLab Incursion
Our exciting StarLab incursion is fast approaching! This experience will help build students’ background knowledge of space in preparation for their English writing assessment in Weeks 7 and 8.
Consent forms and payment are due today – Wednesday, 21 May 2025.
Attendance
As we approach a busy period of assessment, it’s vital that your child attends school every day unless they are unwell. If your child is absent, please call the absence line on (07) 3482 8166 to let us know the reason. If your family is planning an extended holiday, please contact the office in advance, as an attendance exemption may be required.
Piazza Safety
Please help us keep everyone safe by ensuring your child does not play ball games in the piazza after school. Ball games are not permitted in this space, even under parent supervision.
Thank you for your ongoing support. Have a great week!

Good stress and Resilience
Last week in Care class, students showed Care for Learning by exploring good stress and how to respond with resilience to feedback.
We discussed how good stress can be a positive force—it’s the excitement and energy we feel when facing a challenge, we believe we can handle, like before a sports game or a roller coaster ride.
Students also practiced stress-relief strategies available in each classroom, helping them stay calm and focused. Finally, we looked at how to take feedback constructively—an important skill as we head into assessments and end-of-term tasks.
Before School Routines
From 8:00am, Year 3 students can wait in the Piazza or Middle Years Undercover Area — perfect for reading, chatting with friends, or a quick game of handball. Please contact Helping Hands if you require supervision for your child prior to this time.
As mornings get cooler, please remind your child to wear their school jumper, and remember that hats are still needed to and from school. Thanks for helping keep our students comfortable and sun-safe!

Year 4 News
Amazingly we are now half way through Term 2. We’ve been very focused on keeping routines and expectations tight and are looking forward to being able settle into our regular routines for the next few weeks.
This week I would like to show teaching and learning in English and Visual Arts from last week.
English
This photograph shows students working in pairs to compare notes regarding identification and selection of key points of information. This is a new skill for our Year 4 students.
Daily Word Reading (Morphology) lessons focus on decoding and encoding skills. As I spend time in each class, it is exciting to see the high student engagement in these lessons and high student belief that ‘they can do this!'

This semester Year 4 students have been learning about how artists use tone, tint, shade and shadow and are exploring how artists use these techniques to represent and communicate their ideas about everyday items. This photo shows the lessons learnt. (The artist: Lucas)
Reminders
Year 4 Excursion to Australia Zoo - Week 9 (Monday, Tuesday and Friday).

English
It has been great to see the fabulous work students have been completing to gain background knowledge of natural disasters such as bushfires, earthquakes and floods.
Teachers have been helping students to identify the author's purpose, in a range of texts and supporting students to ‘create a written multimodal informative text for an audience’. This has included identifying topic specific vocabulary (inner core / outer core / crust etc.) to use in simple, compound and complex sentences.
The great work continues with morphology with students learning about the prefix ‘ir’. The prefix ‘ir means not, as in irregular (not – regular). Students are learning that the prefix ‘ir’ is used in front of a base word that start with the letter ‘r’.
Examples include; ir - regular
ir – reversable
ir – relevant
A special shoutout to the Year 5 team for getting involved in the Spelling Bee this week!
Camp
We have been working closely with the Year 5 Camp providers and we are getting closer to be able to provide you with a final price. As the camp dates are creeping up on us (5-7 Aug and 7 -9 Aug) it may be a good idea to start budgeting for this experience.
Last year the camp was $322 for a 4-day camp. This year the camp is a 3 day camp and we would expect to see a slight reduction in the overall cost, dependant on the activities. As soon as I have confirmation on the price, I will inform the Yr. 5 parents. Again thank you for your patience with this.
Have a lovely week!
Greg McCallum
Deputy Principal- Year 5

Interschool Sport
This Friday, Year 5 and 6 students will be attending interschool sport. Our students always do a great job of representing MHSS by displaying the Four Cares and 5 Values while competing. I know that our Year 6 students will demonstrate great leadership on Friday. Good luck to everyone participating!
Transitions to High School
This week we had Mango Hill State Secondary College visit our school to speak with the Year 6 cohort. The transition to high school is important and something that we want to support our students and families with as best we can. If you are yet to confirm where your child is attending high school in 2025, now is the time to act.
Being Safe Online
Last week, our Year 6 students participated in a presentation by the Queensland Police around engaging safely online. Many of our students are regularly engaging online with peers and others through games, messages and social media. We highly recommend parents continuing to monitor their children's use of their devices and how they interact with them. For helpful resources for parents regarding online safety, check out the eSafety commissioner website: https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents and further resources on https://www.thinkuknow.org.au/resources-tab/parents-and-carers.
