Community News

We have had a very successful return to school for the start of Term 2. Thank you to our parents/caregivers for working in partnership with us. When families and educators collaborate, they create a supportive and engaging environment that encourages students to reach their full potential. By working together, schools and families can address challenges, celebrate achievements, and ensure that each student receives the guidance and encouragement they need to thrive academically and personally. We extend our thanks for having your children in full school uniform, with the necessary equipment they need to take part successfully in the classroom.
P&C News
Thank you to all our volunteers that assisted with the P&C election barbeque fundraiser Theo, Arun, Ying, Chris, Mohan, Rachael, Keischa, Jodi, Jin, Louis, Sharon, David, Belinda, Melissa, Krystle and Radhika. Your support allows us to hold events like this and raise money to contribute to our school. We do have the Mothers’ Day stall coming up so if you can give up 30 mins or more, please email PandCPresidentMHSS@outlook.com. Please support us with this fun initiative. The next P&C meeting will be held on Monday 12 May at 6.30pm. Please come along. We'd love to see you there.
Sole Badges
We are super excited to announce that our SOLE badges, including our SOLE ambassador badges, have arrived. Students are collecting stickers for each CARE they show over multiple times. When they have each CARE (Self, Others, Learning, Environment) completed, they will receive the corresponding SOLE badge.
For example, if they have all the Care for Self stickers, in their booklet, they will receive the S badge. When students receive all the SOLE badges, they become a SOLE Ambassador and will receive the SOLE Ambassador badge.
It may take the students 12 months to receive one badge so their individual sticker book will track with them from year to year.
Spelling Bee
This is a major fundraiser of our P&C. Last year we raised $20,000. We hope to match this amount or even better it. Our P&C always prioritises funds to our school for much needed resources or projects so funds will be well spent. We would raise over $30,000 if every student raised $20. If you are able, your support would be appreciated. There are lots of amazing prizes up for offer.
Uniforms
As the weather begins to cool, we remind families that wearing our school uniform with pride remains an expectation. Students should continue to wear navy blue jumpers or jackets, which are available from the uniform shop. Navy pants, leggings, or stockings are also part of our winter uniform. We ask that students do not wear clothing in other colours, as maintaining a consistent uniform supports our sense of school identity and pride. If your family is experiencing financial difficulty, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help.
Q Parents Consent
Q Parents Consent: Class Solver and Decodable Readers Australia (DRA)
In alignment with Department policy and the use of the Q Parents platform, we are now seeking annual, school-wide consent for the online programs and subscriptions used at Mango Hill State School.
This week, you will receive a notification on Q Parents requesting consent for two specific programs: Class Solver (supporting class placements for 2026) and Decodable Readers Australia (online home reading). Students are required to have consent to participate in each program. Each consent request includes detailed information about the data collected and where it is stored.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s year level Deputy Principal.
Thank you for your continued support.
2025 Premier's Reading Challenge
I am delighted to invite all Mango Hill State students to join in the 2025 Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC).
The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, from 6 May to 22 August. Enclosed is a reader record form to tally books read throughout the challenge. The forms are also available from your child’s teacher or the Hub.
To complete the challenge:
• Prep to Year 2 must read or experience at least 20 books
• Years 3 and 4 must read at least 20 books
• Years 5 to 9 must read at least 15 books.
Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2025 challenge is to encourage students to make time to read. Last year saw more than 216,000 children from around the state participate.
6 May – 22 August - Reading period for Prep to Year 9 students
22 August - Student reader record forms submitted to teacher
3 – 14 November - Premier's Reading Challenge Celebration Weeks
Book suggestions are available on the PRC website:
https://prc.median.com.au/BookList
Every student who completes the challenge, and returns the completed record reader form, will receive a Certificate of Achievement. I look forward to seeing as many of our students as possible take part in the 2025 Premier’s Reading Challenge.
If your child wishes to participate in the PRC, please return the completed reader form to your child’s teacher by the 22 August, 2025.

Online Safety - Parent/Carer Session
The internet connects us with the world, including family and friends locally and overseas, through messages, live video chat and even playing online games. Being online can be positive and fun and help children and young people learn and connect with others. But sometimes it can expose children and young people to risks.
We have organised a parent/carer information session led by ThinkUKnow – an Australian evidence-based education program led by the Australian Federal Police.
Date: 13 May 2025
Time: 5:00 PM
Location: Mango Hill State School – Wandani
The session will cover:
- What young people SEE, SAY and DO online
- The challenges they may face
- How to report and get help if things go wrong
Our students will also participate in a student session presented by ThinkUKnow during the school day.

Care Class and Focus of the Week
This week in Care Class we will be learning about ‘Bucket Filling’. The concept of bucket filling is to use actions and words to make someone feel good about themselves, to enhance resilience and inspire happiness. We all have an invisible bucket. When we show care for others through our positive words and actions it can add to friends’ buckets. We also need to be aware that when our words or actions are not positive it can dip into their buckets.
We know that everyone in our school is an important part of our community. It is good to have our bucket filled, and it is also good to help fill other's buckets. Ask your child what they did today to be a bucket filler or what sorts of things fill their bucket.
Reading at Mango
Learning to read is a complex process. As reading is not a naturally developing skill, such as walking or talking, all students need to be taught to read words and understand the language of written texts. It takes years of learning and practice to become a skilled reader. Texts we read also become more complex as we get older. This is why we teach reading from Prep to Year 6 at Mango Hill SS and your child’s reading journey will continue into Year 10 and hopefully beyond!
At Mango Hill State School in 2025 our priorities are:
- Students in Prep-Year 2 are taught word reading and spelling with systematic synthetic phonics.
- Students in Years 3-6 are taught to read, spell and understand more complex multisyllabic words through Morphology.
Thank You from our P&C
A great success!!!!! Thank you all!
The P&C would like to send a huge thank you to all our volunteers who supported our election BBQ on Saturday! It was a great success and the sausages were a hit (as were Radhika's delicious baked goods). We couldn't have done it without you all!
We'd also like to thank the children of those volunteers, who came along and got stuck in. Their enthusiasm was outstanding and they worked just as hard as their parents! Thank you to those who offered their time but weren't needed due to full rosters. We absolutely appreciate your willingness to commit some time to our cause, and you're not forgotten and are part of our achievements.
And a big thank you to our community partners, Bakers Delight Mango Hill and Coles Mango Hill for their generous donations towards our sausage sizzle.
Last, but certainly not least, were all of you who came and supported our efforts through your purchases of food and drinks. This is what led to the success. It was fabulous to see so many familiar faces throughout the day and to meet families we didn't know!
The Team Mango spirit was definitely alive and well on Saturday!
On a personal note, I’d like to thank the executive committee for their hard work and dedication in helping me pull this together and for your individual and team contributions on the day. Let this be the beginning of a successful year ahead.
Our next major fundraising event is the Mother's Day stall this week.
The next P&C meeting is on Monday 12 May 2025 at 6:30pm at Wandani. We'd love to see you all there!
Mother's Day Stall
Do you have a spare 30 mins to help on the Mother's Day Stall?
The P&C are holding their annual Mother's Day Stall on Thursday 8 and Friday 9 May.
We are looking for parents who could assist in selling and helping children from 8.30am til 12.30pm each day.
These are fun days and a great way to meet new parents.
If you are keen and available please email vicepresident@mhsspandc.com.au

Helping Hands
Helping Hands Network is proud to run the ‘Adventure Program’ at their before and after school care services. The Adventure Program is an industry leading framework designed to nurture children’s potential through play.
The Adventure Program lets your child choose how they spend their time outside of the classroom with seven fun-filled categories packed with activities.
Kids can kick start their day at the 'Rise then Shine' morning program which offers energising activities and a nutritious breakfast to set kids up for a positive start to their school day.
Why not continue the fun after school at the 'Stay and Play' afternoon program where children can participate in fun activities, build close friendships and wind down after a busy day at school.
Whether they're getting active with 'Super Sports' or solving puzzles with 'Brain Boosters', Helping Hands Network's adventures enable kids to do what they love and discover new interests!
Visit the Helping Hands Network website to learn more about their before and afterschool care program.

Ditto Show
Last week we enjoyed the Ditto show which shared key messages around safety. The children enjoyed singing and dancing whilst hearing the message that if they ever feel unsure or unsafe in a situation they can ‘recognise, react and report’. Recognise refers to how their body might feel, for example butterflies in the tummy. React might include leaving the situation and report refers to talking to a trusted adult.
Vision Screening
Have you signed up for a free vision screener for your child yet? You can find the QR code to register on your child’s classroom door. Paper consent forms are available at the office if you prefer not to register online. Registration closes on Sunday 25 May.
Cross Country and Classroom VisitsOn Friday morning we will be holding the Junior cross-country that was postponed due to rain in Term 1. Prep will run between 9.25-10.00am. Prep teachers are welcoming parents and carers into their classrooms prior to this event for a morning celebration where you can spend time with your child/ren doing some activities or looking at the work that has been going on in class. We look forward to seeing you on the day if you are available and ask that you talk with your child about this change to routine so they feel ready for the day.
Playgroup News
No playgroup this week (Friday 9 May) due to Junior cross-country. We look forward to seeing all our playgroup friends again on Friday 16 May. All welcome!

Learning in English
1H students have begun building their background knowledge and vocabulary about seals. Building knowledge and expanding on vocabulary directly supports student’s comprehension of a topic. With improved comprehension, students will be better able to write about their topic.

Happy Mother’s Day for this weekend, to all the Year 1 mothers and mother figures.
Have a wonderful week everyone,

Every Day Counts: The Importance of Attendance
Every school day counts. Regular attendance is vital to student learning, social development and overall wellbeing. When students miss school, they miss out on important learning opportunities and valuable classroom experiences. If your child is absent, please remember to notify the school office with a reason for the absence as soon as possible.
If your family is experiencing any challenges with getting your child to school, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to support you.
Starting the Day Right: The Importance of Being on Time
Arriving on time is just as important as attending. At Mango Hill State School, each day begins with a morning meeting or morning circle, which is a key part of our Berry Street Education Model (BSEM). This time allows students to connect with their teacher and peers in a calm, predictable routine that supports engagement, builds wellbeing and fosters a sense of belonging.
Missing this part of the day can leave students feeling unsettled and disconnected. We encourage families to help their children start the day in the best possible way—by being at school on time, ready to participate in this important practice.
If you would like to know more about what your child’s morning meeting looks like, please reach out to their class teacher.

Cool weather uniforms
I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend. As the weather begins to cool, it's the perfect time to dig out those jumpers, trackpants, and tights. We'd like to remind families that our community expectation is for students to wear the correct navy winter uniform items featuring the Mango Hill State School logo.
You can support us by checking that your child’s warm clothing still fits well and is clearly labelled. This helps us ensure lost items can be quickly returned and students stay warm and comfortable throughout the day.
Important Dates – Upcoming Events
A reminder that our Science Street incursion is coming up on Thursday 29 May and Friday 30 May. Cost is $18, with payment and consent due by Wednesday 21 May. Students cannot participate without both.
We’re also welcoming Think U Know next week on Tuesday 13 May. This free session, presented by State and Federal Police, will focus on online safety and child protection.

English
In Term 2 English Year 4 students are learning about a new type of text. They are learning about Information Texts. Students will be required
- To read, view and comprehend an information text
- To create a written and multimodal (digital) information text for an audience
As the students are now in Year 4 we are building on from Year 3 knowledge, learning new skills and extending their ability to incorporate a number of language features.

Science
Over the past 2 weeks students have been having fun becoming familiar with sources of light and modelling the transfer of light within a lighting system.
This has included students creating laser paths with mirrors and a variety of lenses to reflect and refract light.
ThinkUKnow
This week you would have received information regarding students attending the ThinkUKnow presentation on Tuesday 13th May. ThinkUKnow is a nationally recognised, evidence-based program that educates young people about staying safe online, particularly preventing online child sexual exploitation, in an age appropriate manner.
The sessions will be provided for all Year 3 to Year 6 students, however, if you do not wish for your child to attend, please contact your child’s classroom teacher by the end of this week to assist with planning.
To find out more about the ThinkUKnow program, please visit the official website:
https://www.thinkuknow.org.au
There is no cost for students to attend the session.
Year 5 Camp 4 – 6 Aug and 6 – 8 Aug
We are currently awaiting final confirmation from the Sunshine Coast Recreation centre regarding activities and pricing for the Year 5 camp. As soon as we receive finalised details we will inform parents to give families the most amount of time possible to make payments.
Have a lovely week!

Mango Mentors
During the week, I was able to present another group of students with their Mango Mentors badges. I am so proud of this wonderful group of students who have worked so hard over a period of time to demonstrate the Mango Hill Cares and Values.
Our Mango Mentors will soon be rostered on to support some of our classes in the lower school. I know they will do a fantastic job at being great role models to our younger peers.
Uniforms
The weather is cooling and more students are coming to school in jumpers. The majority of our Year 6 students have been coming to school in a Mango Hill State School jacket or jumper. If you need support getting a school jumper or jacket for your child, please contact me on dxobr0@eq.edu.au

Please see below the instructions to a game called ‘Headache’. Headache is a fun and engaging game that develops part-part-whole understanding and confidence in recalling addition and subtraction number facts. It is important for players to share the roles of player and leader. After several games, it is important to discuss the strategies students are using. Counters and ten frames can be made available to support students’ calculation attempts, if necessary.
