We’ve had another productive week as we enter the second last week of Term 3. How good has the weather been? It couldn’t have come at a better time as Year 4, 5 and 6 students commence their water safety program.
In Term 4 we will be having a big push on students wearing hats when outside. If your child doesn't have a hat now is the time to purchase one. It's a good idea to have a spare and don't forget to label them.
We know how busy Term 4 is as such, we have attached the Term 4 overview. Please be mindful that this can be subject to change therefore we recommend reading the weekly newsletter for updates.
2024_Term_4_parent_overview.docx
As we edge closer to holidays, I take this time to thank our parents and caregivers for their willingness to engage in productive partnerships with our school. I understand how busy life can get and how hard it can be to attend school events yet our events are so well attended. Thank you for your continued support.
This week we have our long-awaited Arts Fest on Thursday. On Friday, our Wakakirri team will be representing our school at the finals. They are such a committed group of students and staff. They have put so much work into their dance narrative. Good luck!
On Tuesday 10 September our Year 6 students will be attending a secondary transition day at Mango Hill State School Secondary College.
On Saturday 7 September, the Moreton Bay City Council are holding a movie night on our school grounds. This is a free event. Although this is NOT a school event, our P&C will be holding a barbeque. If you have time, drop in and purchase a sausage as proceeds from this barbeque go back into our school

Active School Travel
The council are assisting us with promoting active travel to school. Part of this approach is collecting data from our school families. The council would appreciate you taking the time to complete this survey to inform them about how our families are travelling to school. It’s nice and short and won’t take long to complete.
As you know, we have been continuing to promote walking, scooting and cycling to and from school as a great way to avoid congestion and keep our kids active.
P&C meeting
Our next P&C meeting will be held on Monday 9 September at 6.30pm. We encourage your attendance.
2025 School Planning
It is that time of the year again where we are starting to formulate 2025 classes.
If you have any matters you would like us to consider for your child’s class placement in 2025, please complete a Class Considerations Form and return to Petrina Ollard polla2@eq.edu.au by Friday 25 October, 2024. Late submissions will not be considered.
If your child will not be returning to MHSS in 2025, please let us know so we can ensure our staffing and resources are as accurate as possible.
Wandani Arts Fest 2024

The Respect Program: What does the research tell us?
As we move forward with the implementation of the Respect Program in our Term 4 Health units, we all play an important role introducing this vital resource developed by the Department of Education. This program is a key initiative of the Queensland Government’s commitment to addressing domestic and family violence. The alarming statistics underscore the crucial role of this program in changing the narrative and shaping a safer future for all children in our state.
In early Term 4, we will be hosting information sessions for parents and carers to further explore the Respect Program. If you require support or more information about the Respect Program, please visit here.

This week in Care Class, we are going to Care for Learning and focus on the importance of resilience. We learn to be resilient by making mistakes. We will read the book “The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes” where Beatrice learns to be resilient by making a mistake. We will explore the meaning of the word ‘mistake’, which is when you do something that isn’t quite right or it doesn’t turn out the way you wanted. We will learn the word mistake comes from (Etymology) the Scandinavian ‘mistaka’ which means to ‘take in error’.
Day: Monday
Dates: 14th October to 2nd December (8 Sessions) - Starting in Week 3 due to PH on 7th October
(please let us know if there is a pupil-free day or special event that could affect these dates)
Times: 3:00pm - 4:15pm
Mango Hill State School Arts Parade
As a team of Arts Teachers, we all agree that it is so important for The Arts to be shared and for all students to have the chance to listen and watch live performances. During the school year our groups have the opportunity to perform at various competitions and festivals and have worked so hard to come away with a plethora of awards.
Mango Hill State School’s Performing Arts students, who participate in the current excellence programs, have the opportunity of sharing a variety of Music and Dance pieces with the whole school and the wider community. The first event of this kind was in Term 4 of 2023 and the feedback from students, teachers, parents and carers was so positive that this has now become an annual event.
We welcome families to this performance on Thursday 12th September at 9am in Gigum Hall. Coffee will be available before and after the event at Sole Café in the Piazza.
What better way to conclude all of the Art celebrations which take place in week 9 with a live performance in week 10. We look forward to sharing the work of our students and staff with you all – Mrs Almond, Mrs Kostoglou, Mrs Morrell, Mrs Nicolopoulos & Ms Blythe.
Information for families who have a child performing
All students are to wear formal uniform unless they have been directed by Mrs Kostoglou to arrive in costume. If you have a child in one of the following groups then it is imperative that they arrive at the times indicated below:

Wakakirri & Junior/Senior Eisteddfod Teams - 7.45 Gigum Hall

Arts Fest Excitement
This week we have been so excited about our Wandani Arts Fest. We visited the art gallery with our buddy classes and were amazed at the pieces on show. We enjoyed looking at art from Prep to Grade 6 and even from our Lady Gowrie Kindy friends! We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, you’re in for a treat!
Term 4 Swimming
In week 1 next term we begin our Swimming program for 2024. The holidays are the perfect time to talk with your child about this exciting experience and practise dressing and undressing with independence. Your child will need to bring high visibility, sun-safe swimmers, a towel, swimming cap and thongs/crocs. Goggles are optional. It is essential that all items are labelled and placed in a swimming bag. If you have any questions about swimming, please see your class teacher.

Art Gallery
We have loved visiting the art gallery this week. It’s so exciting to see our own artwork and to have the chance to appreciate the artwork of others.
We were amazed at the class auction pieces and we’ve all picked a favourite!
We hope you’ll come and celebrate Arts Fest with us on Thursday night!
In Week 10, I will be on leave. I hope everyone has an incredible holiday break, enjoying some lovely weather!
Holiday goals in our house include…
*reading the brand new Percy Jackson
*beaching and swimming
*painting pottery at a pottery painting class
*Nudgee Beach walks
*catching up on podcasts (we love the Gen Z Media and ABC Listen podcasts!)
*reestablishing our tv and device boundaries, ready to tackle Term 4
*improving our basketball and handball skills (yes, the kids, but also… me).

Italian Gelato Incursion
The children in Year 2 have been hard at work practising their Italian language skills with Signora McEvoy and Signora Verster. On Thursday last week, the students had the opportunity to use their language skills by participating in a real-life experience where they needed to order and buy a gelato from a gelataio. The best part of the whole incursion was getting to eat the delicious gelato and then dancing to Italian music. There were some very happy customers in 2L and 2E at the end of the experience.
In week 10 I will be on holidays, I wish you all a great break. See you in term 4.

Year 3 Art
Earlier this year our students explored and compared art work created by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as part of the visual arts unit. Drawing inspiration from these culturally significant works, they embarked on creating their own unique pieces. These student artworks, which beautifully incorporate natural materials like dirt and clay to create diverse textures, are now proudly displayed at the Wandani Arts Fest this week. The results are nothing short of amazing!

Learning in Year 3
This term, our Year 3 students have been diving into the exciting world of location in maths. Building on earlier lessons from the year, this popular unit engages students with hands-on activities like matching positions on maps and following directions on grids. In class, they’ve been reinforcing these skills through fun and interactive grid games, including a class favourite, Battleships.

Technology Fun!
This term, our Year 4 students have been using design features to produce a pinball machine. They have been developing the skills to clearly describe the features of their design and recording their design ideas through annotated diagrams.
It has also been wonderful to hear students talk about the suitability of their ideas and outline opportunities to improve their design.
Check out some of the pinball machines below!
Water Safety
This week, our Year 4 students have visited or plan to visit the pool to complete their water safety session. Some of the things they learnt were rescue techniques, ways to alert people if they are in trouble, and ways to be safe in and around water.

This week we have the Arts Fest on Thursday evening. The Year 5 students are very proud of the sculptures they have produced.
This is one piece that caught my eye from Austin in 5L.
Austin’s sculpture is titled ‘Be Kind In Games’.
Austin captures the essence of our School Cares, especially Care for Others. Austin also identifies the importance of Respect, Commitment and Teamwork.
It would be great to see you at the Arts Fest on Thursday evening!
Positive Attendance = Positive Academic Achievement
With only a week left for Term 3 please continue to ensure students attend every day.
In English, Year 5 students are in the middle of creating a moment in time description from a character’s point of view. In Math students continue to work on finding unknow quantities in word problems and they will also continue their work on geometry. Every day counts!
Water Safety
Students were fortunate to participate in the water safety program over the past week. Thank you to parents and carers for making sure students were well organised to attend. A special thank you to the teachers and family of students who returned to school after 3:00pm. You support is greatly appreciatedGreg McCallum

Year 6 Graduation fundraising at Arts Fest
The school’s annual Arts Fest is always a wonderful opportunity for the Year 6 Graduation Committee to raise money for the celebration at the end of the year and make it a memorable occasion for our students. At this year’s Arts Fest, money raised from the following will go towards the Year 6 Graduation:
- Silent Auction
- BBQ and Bake sale
- Raffle
Raffle tickets and food items from the BBQ will be available on the night. There are also some beautiful art pieces that have been donated for our Silent Auction. Come down, check them out and place a bid!
High School transitions
On Tuesday next week, a large number of our students will be attending the Mango Hill State Secondary College half day transition day. Those not attending will be combined into a smaller number of classes for the first part of the day.
A reminder that if you’re yet to enrol your child into high school for 2025, that now is the time to get onto this. The sooner students are enrolled, the sooner that we can work with our local high schools to support a smooth transition.
Interschool Sport
This Friday is our final Interschool Sports day for the year. Good luck to all of our students competing. We know that you will represent Team Mango by displaying the values of respect, teamwork and commitment!

MHSS Physical Education News Term 3 Wk. 9 Update
Why play sport?
Scientific evidence clearly links regular physical activity to a wide range of physical and mental health benefits.
Increasing the level of participation in regular physical activity is now an identified national priority. The Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACPHER), recommend that students participate in 60 minutes of physical activity a day.
A wide variety of sporting opportunities are offered at MHSS to cater for all of the students’ sporting interests and we encourage every student, regardless of their physical capabilities, to play sport. It is hoped that the skills learnt through participating in sport and Physical Education, will encourage students to develop lifelong fitness habits. At Mango Hill we see sport as a great way to develop a healthy competitive spirit, self-discipline, team-work and fair-play skills.
Holiday Programs
With school holidays approaching it is a fantastic opportunity for kids to participate in sporting programs or sign up to a sport played over the summer months. Be on the lookout in the newsletter and around the community for sports such as Cricket, Tennis, AFL and many more.

Last Thursday, our Year 6 B team participated in a competitive event at the Downey Park Netball Association, facing off against other district netball champions. While we didn't secure a spot on the ladder, the team put in a great effort, and we had a fantastic day out. Well done, Senior B team!
