Community News

As we edge closer to the end of term, I congratulate the majority of students for being the best version of themselves, trying their best with all aspects of school. At Mango Hill State School we want our students to be happy, successful and safe. As a school, we try to emulate the expectations of society. We educate students to be safe, how to build and keep positive relationships, how to model integirty and encourage happiness. Our aim is to teach and guide students to learn these skills whilst in a nurturing, safe environment. We appreciate the work our parents do to partner with us and are very open to ideas about how we can better support our families.
Staffing
We farewell Ms Chantelle Raj and thank her for her efforts while at Mango Hill. Ms Carr is currently backfilling until the end of term but for Term 3 we welcome Ms Michelle Jackson. Ms Jackson joins us from Victoria but has recently been teaching in North Queensland.
Our Business Manager, Ms Jayne Clarke, has successfully been promoted. We thank Jayne for her commitment to Mango Hill and wish her the best in her new role. Mrs Petrina Ollard will take on the role of acting Business Manager until the role goes through a merit based process.
Ms Junine Correlje will commence maternity leave at the end of this term. We wish Junine the best of luck and can’t wait to meet her baby. Ms Rachael Beard joins us to take on the role in Year 6, along with Ms Suzie McEvoy. Rachael will be in the school full time but will also undertake the pedagogy mentor role.
Ms Hannah Ratcliffe is now working as a teacher in various roles for Term 3.
Ms Kerris Hore will join us as a teacher working from the DOCK. She will commence in Week 10, this term.
Lastly, Ms Kate Colville, has finished up working in the office. We thank Kate for always bringing a happy disposition.
I know you will join with the staff of Mango Hill to welcome our new staff.
Instrumental Music
On Monday our Senior Concert Band and Senior Strings attended Mango Hill State Secondary College to attend the Instrumental Fanfare. Our students represented our school with pride.
A reminder, tonight we will be holding our Music Gala Night. I know students are extremely proud to be performing in front of a real audience. Thank you to Mrs Emma Nicolopoulos, Ms Erin Blyth, Mrs Alena Bogdan, Ms Judy Luke, Mrs Janet Almond and Mrs Claire Morrell for putting this event together.
Mid-Year Concert
Next week we will be holding a Dance Concert for Years 2 and 4 students, plus eisteddfod teams, Junior Choir and Dance Clubs. We encourage parents/carers to attend. This year we will be asking for a gold coin donation, per person, upon entry to help raise money to buy our own set of chairs for Gigum Hall for events like these. Each year we have to hire extra seating to ensure there is enough seats for all families and friends to join us on nights like tonight. Thank you to staff Ms Glenda Kostoglou, Mrs Claire Morrell, Mrs Janet Almond and Miss Morgan Sheehan for all the work they do behind the scenes to prepare our students and present events like this. Our staff are amazing.
I commence long service leave on Wednesday June 12 and return Tuesday July 16. I will be taking my family to visit extended family. I’m really looking forward to spending down time with my boys, Tobi and Olli, and having the entire family away from screens and connecting with each other. During my leave, Mr Greg McCallum will take on the Acting Principal role. I know you will support him in this role. I look forward to connecting again early Term 3
This week in Care Class we will be focusing on Care for Others by identifying what respect looks like and negotiating and resolving conflict respectfully. Being respectful means you act in a way that shows care for how your actions may impact others. We can show respect for people, places, and things.
We can show respect in the following ways.
- Using kind or polite words, even when you are upset
- Using manners like sharing, waiting your turn, saying please and thank you
- Being careful not to damage places or things
- Sharing resources, only taking what you really need
Respect means you can accept somebody for who they are, even when they’re different from you or you don’t agree with them.
Italian Week
Thank you to our amazing Italian teachers, Mrs Alicia Victor, Mrs Shona McEvoy and Mrs Verster for all their work celebrating Italian Week. The students had a great time and the food was delicious (A special thank you to our canteen staff and helpers)!

Pyjama Day Day

Vision screener reminder
We now have well over 100 of our Prep friends booked in for the FREE vision screeners that will take place here at school in July. It is not too late as the link is open until 19 June. To find the link, check your emails (including junk mail) for a message sent from me, mmunk1@eq.edu.au on Monday 20 May or check your child’s classroom door where you will find a QR code for registration.
Social emotional learning (SEL)
This semester our Student Welfare Officer, Tegan O’Connor has been running weekly social and emotional learning sessions with all of the classes in Prep. Children have brought their work home and may have talked to you about it. During these sessions, Miss Tegan has focused on teaching the self-regulation process of Stop, Think, Do. This is a complementary behaviour support method for teachers and parents. Emotions are identified and expressed early at the STOP stage, ensuring time to THINK about options to solve the problem, motivating and skilling the child to DO it. The primary aims are to develop a supportive learning environment, and to teach learners skills that support them to achieve their full learning potential.

Buy me a Pizza so I Can Show you a Half!
Hello Team Year 1 Families! We’ve nearly made it through the semester together. Made it, and thrived!
We are currently undertaking assessment and it’s timely for us as a Year 1 team to look at how far our little poppets have travelled.
Here’s some celebrations:
*We’ve really been working hard on encoding and decoding using phonics. We are seeing this hard work pay off in writing! So many more sounds and letters are automatically recalled by our Year 1s, reducing the cognitive load and helping them to get their creative ideas onto paper!
*Big Picture Comprehension remains a solid focus. We love diving into picture books and exploring characters. Pig the Pug has been one of our favourites this term.
*Did you know we can figure out how to share half a pizza with a friend? That’s right! We know fractions! We know how to find a half. Buy us pizza for dinner one night and we will show you.
Take this time to reflect on the growth in your little one in the home environment too. What can they do now, that they couldn’t do at the beginning of the year? Can they carry their own bag in to school? Can they dress themselves and pack their own school bags? What home ‘goals’ can you celebrate?
Have a lovely week

Teaching for Positive Play Times
As children come to the end of the term, they can get tired and lose their capacity to deal with difficulties in the playground. We know ourselves as adults, that when we feel energised and refreshed, we can solve problems easily. However, when we are feeling tired and run down, sometimes little bumps in the road can feel like big mountains.
In Year 2, we recognise that we have some tired little people on our hands at this time in the term. Sometimes when our students are exhausted, they resort to using hands on strategies rather than using their words to solve problems.
In classrooms we always focus on building the children’s skills around how to deal with unfavourable situations in the playground. We talk regularly about what words are productive and can help when solving problems. We’ve also explored how the tone of voice we use can effect how our needs are perceived by others. In addition to this, we revisit the steps of the High 5 regularly and discuss why it is important to listen to others if the High 5 is used on us.
Mid-Year Concert
The children in Year 2 are getting very excited about performing at our Mid-Year Concert on the Tuesday 11 June 2024. Doors open to Gigum Hall at 5:00 pm for a 5:15 pm start. Below is a guide about what to wear on the night.

Year 3 First Nations
Last week we held another fantastic Yarn and Eats session for all of our First Nations families. Special shout out to our Team Mango staff including our Year 3 teachers, Mrs Gough and Miss Shanahan, who arranged some amazing activities for our student to participate in. By far, this was our largest turn out yet, with many Year 3 students among the group playing traditional ball games, painting and sharing some binja (food). This event has provided a great opportunity for our First Nations families to connect and engage in First Nations perspectives. I can’t wait to connect again at our Term 3 event and am looking forward to our upcoming NAIDOC Parade in Week 10.
Deep Problem Solving
“That wasn’t the way we did it when I was in school!” A conversation that we sometime hear, particularly when we are talking about solving maths problems. Our students are exposed to a world that is constantly changing therefore our approach to problem solving has adapted to stay with the times. This term, many of our classes have been applying their mathematical skills to solve problems that are presented in unfamiliar contexts. Students in 3G have been using a thinking routine called compass points to help their thinking and note their ideas on how to tackle the problem. How great is maths!

Ballads
In English, students are investigating ballads, developing an understanding of the ways in which they were used to share stories with others in engaging and entertaining ways. Our teachers will be sharing ballads such as Mulga Bill's Bicycle, Man from Snowy River and Bush Christening and students will have the opportunity to collaboratively present their favourite ballads to others, discussing why they might be entertaining. Be sure to ask your children about these ballads and the stories they tell!
Concert!
This week, Year 4 have all been practising for their big performance at the Mid-Year Concert. I’ve been lucky enough to get a sneak peek and we are all in for a treat next week! We are looking forward to welcoming you all to Gigum Hall on Tuesday for the big performance. Doors open at 6:45 pm for Year 4.

Reconciliation Week / NAIDOC Week
With National Reconciliation Week occurring between 27 May and 3 June students from 5P have been raising awareness by creating a mural in the Year 5 hall way. Great work 5P.
A reminder out Whole School NAIDOC Assembly will occur on Friday 21 June (Week 10).
This year’s NAIDOC theme is ‘Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud’. NAIDOC Week occurs from 7-14 July.
Academic Achievement
Throughout the term, students have been working on both diary entries and information reports. Over the past week, student have been making multi-text connections. An example of this would be writing about a beach holiday in a diary entry and then writing about a sand crab you saw at the beach in an information report.
Well done to all the Year 5 students for being enthusiastic and demonstrating excellent effort throughout this unit.

Camp Reminder
A reminder that camp payments are due on Friday 14 June 2024.

Learning in Year 6
Our Year 6 students have been busy completing assessment pieces over the past week, representing their learning from throughout Term 2. It’s always great to see the learning progress made by individuals across the term. I have particularly enjoyed reading the writing pieces developed by students over the past week, especially when compared to the start of the term.
Well done to all students on their application towards their assessment over the past week!
Mango Hill Secondary State College visit
During the week, we had some staff, as well as past MHSS students who now attend MHSSC, come and talk to our Year 6 students about the opportunities on offer at MHSSC for them in 2025. It was great to hear about the range of different academies on offer, with many students’ excitement building after hearing about the positive experiences from current Year 7 students.
If you are planning for you child to attend MHSSC in 2025, be sure to enrol them soon. In Term 3, we will begin our transition programs. Students will need to be enrolled in order to attend.
Interschool Sport
This Friday, many of our students will be attending Interschool Sport. We are always so proud of how our MHSS students represent Team Mango at these events. I am sure our Year 6 students will demonstrate the 4 Cares and the Mango Hill values of respect, commitment and teamwork in their relevant sports.
All the best for your games this week, Team Mango!
Graduation
Thank you to everyone who was able to come along to our Graduation Committee meeting last week. We are lucky to have such a supportive and dedicated parent group! In coming weeks, I will be seeking volunteer support from our parent group to help out with fundraising at the Mango Hill SS Arts Fest in late Term 3. This is always a great opportunity to raise funds for Graduation. Keep an eye out for this communication. We would love any support you can provide!
Camp
Camp is fast approaching with payment due Friday 14 June 2024. Next week, we have the camp coordinator from Tallebudgera coming to the school to visit our staff and students. During this visit, students attending camp will learn about what’s involved on camp. They will also get the chance to ask questions. This visit will occur on Thursday next week.
