Dear Parents and Carers
This year our P&C has donated $50 000 to our school. The money has been spent well and has allowed us to purchase the following.
- $9700 for Health and Physical Education - student incentives, sports carnival equipment, replacing old/damaged PE equipment, sports grounds maintenance, marquees, revitalising the long jump pit.
- $10 000 for Inclusion support – purchasing resources and equipment to enhance reasonable adjustments for students.
- $10 000 for Texts – updating readers, purchasing books to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, decodable texts.
- $10 800 for STEM resources – resources for Science kits, resources for technology.
- $6250 for Early Years resources – Early years play equipment, purchasing phonemic awareness resources, speech language resources.
- $3250 for Pre-Prep resource bags, transition days, community events and meetings with early childhood stakeholders.
Thank you to our P&C for their continued support and partnership in helping us deliver a world class education system to our students. We value what our P&C does and I extend my thanks to all community members for their support of the P&C initiatives throughout the year. You can continue your support by supporting the latest P&C fundraisers – tea towel drive and school disco. You still have until Friday 20 October to place your tea towel order. Please order via the Qkr! app.
On Thursday 26 October the P&C will be holding a school disco. Please refer to further information on the flyer attached. I look forward to seeing as many of our students and families attend.
On Friday 27 October we will be asking our students to wear RED! Day for Daniel is held annually and honours the memory of Daniel Morcombe. It is a day we use to promote conversations with children and young people about personal safety. This will not be a fundraiser so donations are not required but rather we will use this event to promote child safety.
Last week our Year 4 students attended camp at Runaway Bay. I’ve heard great feedback from staff and students. A big thank you to the following staff for willingly giving up family time to attend. It is much appreciated. Mrs Baker, Mrs Doyle, Ms Goodall, Mrs Osbourne, Mrs Lahney, Miss McGuinness, Mr Smith, Miss Thomson, Mrs O'Connor, Miss O'Brien, Mr Olsen, Miss Korman and Mrs Ecker.
On Friday we are holding another Prep transition morning. We would love to see as many of our 2024 prep students attend.
Class preferences: Last reminder
If you have any matters you would like us to consider for your child’s class placement in 2024, please complete a Class Considerations Form and return to Jasmine Benfer jbenf10@eq.edu.au by tomorrow.
If your child will not be returning to MHSS in 2024, could you please let us know so we can ensure our staffing and resources are as accurate as possible.
Have a wonderful week

Italian Week
This week we are celebrating Italian week!
The students have been involved in activities such as the following.
- Writing letters to Super Mario who is on an Italian holiday.
- Creating posters for a character from an Italian story.
- Playing a variety of games using Italian words and phrases.
- Enjoying some lunchtime activities.
On Friday of Week 4, we will recognise Day for Daniel at Mango Hill State School, by wearing red. This national day of action advocates for safer communities for children and empowering them to Recognise, React and Report when they feel unsafe.
We believe Day for Daniel is the perfect opportunity to continue our conversations around personal safety. The Day for Daniel also closely links with our Care Class work this year around recognising our body cues when we feel stressed and naming our feelings and emotions.
There are lots of things our bodies do to let us know we might not be safe. These are called body clues. It’s important we can recognise our body clues. Things like feeling sick in the tummy, our hands sweating, or our heart beating faster are all clues we might not be safe. If we ever find ourselves in an unsafe situation, we need to be able to react. This means to find a way, if possible, to become safe again such as saying ‘NO!’, running away or screaming ‘help’. Sometimes we even need to break a rule to become safe again. If we ever feel unsafe it is really important to report it to a safety helper. Keep telling an adult in your safety network until someone helps.
We will reinforce these key safety messages during our Care Class in Week 4.
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ’Noticing my feelings’. We will also be consolidating this focus next week.
When children learn how to notice their feelings they are using their sensory awareness, using descriptive language and improving emotional literacy.
A key aspect of effective self-regulation is the ability to identify emotions and feelings. Sometimes children do not have the words to express how they feel and may act out these feelings in ways that can be challenging. When we can identify and describe our emotions, we can choose strategies to manage them.
Here are some ways that you can help your child act on their feelings in positive ways.

Stop, Drop and Go and Lookout
To continue teaching our students independence in our first year of learning, our Prep students now have the opportunity to use Stop, Drop and Go for our morning drop off. This is an easy and efficient way to get all our students to school safely and a great way to prepare our students for greater independence. Should you like to start using this area, please follow the signs to our Stop, Drop and Go area, saying goodbye to your children as they make their way across the crossing.
Students can walk across the crossing, saying a big Mango Hill hello to our crossing supervisors and the staff member on duty and make their way to the Prep undercover area. Students can wait in the Prep under cover area from 8:00am with our team supervising. Students can still play on the Prep grassed area if accompanied by a parent or carer.
To support this transition, I would encourage you to make a plan with your child. You might like to discuss:
- How to cross the road safely by waiting for the crossing supervisor to blow the whistle.
- Walking safely on the concrete and with an older sibling or friend if possible.
- Mapping out the path to take from the crossing to the Prep under cover area.
There will be additional staff and senior leaders supporting this process from 8:00am. If you would like to continue dropping your children off to the Prep area, please remember to park in the main school car park. The small Kindergarten car park, located next to our Gigum hall is a no parking zone for Mango Hill State School families.
In the afternoons our Prep staff will continue to escort students using the Lookout for afternoon pick up.
Writing
This term our Prep students are entertaining peers in their writing by creating new events that continue with the storyline. In class we have been reading many picture books and using our mind mapping and brainstorming to create the next sequence of events. This week I have been fortunate to visit many classrooms that have been reading ‘Harry the dirty dog’.
It has been amazing to see our creative brains at work. Yesterday in Prep J, students created a story where ‘Harry’ visited the beach and then dug his own swimming pool near the ocean. I particularly loved hearing how the character felt during this event and what he might say. What a fantastic way to describe the events!
Have a great week

CASH!
In Year 1 we’re working with money and we’re loving it! Give us all the cash please parents!
When we go to the shops with you, please give us coins and notes to give to the shop keeper because WE LOVE buying things at shops. Each class has a buying shop situation right now and it’s possibly the reason we are getting up in the mornings.
Everyone loves money, right?
In this cashless society it can be tricky for our children to know the value of money. When we tap and go or order online, our children don’t see how much of our money is being spent - and let’s face it, the money is mostly on them!
We need to work together to ensure our children deeply understand the value of coins and notes because real world experience is the best type of experience!
We’d love to see some pictures up in our classrooms of our students out and about in the real world, using money. Send them in to our teachers!
Have a lovely week

Narrative Writing in Year 2
This term in English, the students in Year 2 are exploring a range of picture books. They are using these books as a basis for writing their own narratives. They are focusing on creating stories that engage the reader by including a beginning, middle and an end with a dramatic complication or problem to be solved.
Telling stories is such an integral part of our daily lives as we recount events and experiences, and use these to entertain others. Many of the best stories have a series of events, and this unit provides students with an opportunity to use their imaginations to create some new events for familiar characters.
This unit of work also gives students lots of practice as they prepare for NAPLAN at the start of Year 3. Students practise generating ideas in a mind map, planning their narrative and then writing it just like they do in the NAPLAN writing test.
I was lucky enough to be invited by 2L to read some of their narratives. The children did a wonderful job engaging me as the reader by including noun and verb groups to add detail to the events as well as figurative language and dialogue to help paint a picture about how the characters in their stories were feeling.

We can’t wait to read everyone’s narratives at the end of the term.

Reminder
Due dates are closer than they appear Nominations for the Excellence Badge are due this Friday 20 October, 2023. Students in Years 3-6 can apply for a gold badge for academic, sport and/or cultural excellence. I encourage students and parents to read the nomination forms and apply if they wish to. Students who meet the criteria can only be awarded a gold badge if they have submitted a nomination form.
Learning in Year 3
We love learning together in Year 3. In every year level including Year 3 students have many opportunities daily to collaborate with other students for learning. In Science students are doing experiments to investigate how heat can be produced and transferred. Students are exploring factors affecting heat transfer and safety practices required. Below are some photos …

Hats!
Each and every day of the school year, students should wear their hats to and from school and at each break. This is a really important way to protect children from the sun. Teachers are helping your children by ensuring they head off to play wearing a hat. If your child is not wearing their hat when they leave the house in the morning, please prompt them to head back into grab it as they need it at school. Please remind your child each morning to comply with the uniform requirements and do their future self a favour by limiting sun exposure.
Take care and have a wonderful week

Year 4 Camp
What an amazing experience last week was for our Year 4 students who attended camp. The purpose of camp was to support students to develop and practise their leadership skills, autonomy and teamwork. The camp spoke about the character strengths of communication, positivity, resilience, self-regulation, creativity and empathy in building the confidence of our students to lead. Our students rose to the occasion.
There were a range of amazing activities and experiences for the students on offer. When discussing camp highlights with students, laser tag and archery were the clear favourites!
I know the staff that attended were incredibly proud of the way the students conducted themselves at camp. It has been wonderful to hear from students and parents alike, and to receive so much positive feedback about their experience last week.

Learning about Money in Year 4
This term the students in Year 4 are solving a variety of purchasing problems using efficient strategies (such as rounding). They are learning to calculate change, calculate total amounts and determine items that can be purchased for specific amounts of money. Not only are the children learning to calculate money, but they are developing their understanding of mathematical words associated with money.
Some ways you can help your child to learn about time include the following.
- Reading different menus, catalogues, price lists and calculate the totals for purchasing of particular items.
- Calculating change for every day items purchased.
- Using play money at home and role playing buying items.
- Taking note of different items you could purchase for a specific amount of money.

2024 Student Leader Nominations
As we near the end of the year, we are already shifting our thinking to 2024. For our current cohort of Year 5 students, 2024 is an important year and one that presents some wonderful opportunities for them. One of these opportunities is in the form of student leadership.
Student Leadership passports were handed out to Year 5 students during the middle of Term 3 and are due to be completed on Friday of Week 5 (3rd November) for those wishing to be nominated for a captain position in 2024. This includes school, sports, diversity, performing arts, sustainability and reconciliation captain positions. Once forms have been submitted by the due date, the nomination process will begin. Below are some timelines to be aware of:
- Week 6: Group interviews conducted by Principal and Deputy Principal of students who have nominated to be a captain in 2024.
- Week 7: Year 5 students vote based on those who nominated by completing the passport on time. From this and the interview process, students will be shortlisted for the captain positions.
- Week 8: Shortlisted students present speeches to Year 4 and 5 students. Year 4 and 5 students, as well as staff, complete the voting form. Votes are counted.
- Week 10: 2024 Students Leaders are announced at the Year 5 awards ceremony.
I am so proud of our Year 5 students and I know there are many who are already great leaders within our school. I am looking forward to the opportunity of formalising these positions at the end of Term.

Being Safe Online
Last week I shared the link to the Safety Commissioner website: https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents. Here you will find a range of fantastic resources targeted at parents to support them to keep their children safe online. Our Year 6 teachers will also be sharing some of the resources in the Educators sections with their classes throughout Term 4. Let’s continue to work together to ensure our children are safe and aware online.

Learning in Maths
Developing number sense and the ability to work effectively with numbers is critical to being an active and productive citizen who is successful at work and in future learning, who is financially literate, and who engages with the world and other individuals.
Mathematics has a more fundamental role in the development of numeracy compared to other learning areas. The mathematics curriculum provides opportunities to apply mathematical understanding and skills in other learning areas and to real-world contexts. Financial mathematics is an important context for the application of number, algebra, measurement and probability.
Students in Year 1 are beginning their journey in financial mathematics by exploring the features of coins and notes. By Year 3 our students are investigating change and in Year 5 our students begin to investigate income, expenditure, calculate costs and make financial decisions.
Number Facts and Rapid recall
As our students finalise their units for the year in maths, they will have multiple opportunities to practice and consolidate their learning in preparation for the new year through our Number facts and Rapid recall program. Our Rapid Recall program was developed to provide consolidation of previously taught essential math concepts and skills and take this knowledge from the short-term memory to long-term memory, providing automaticity.
Students in Years 1-6 learn, practise and consolidate Number fact strategies. Below are the strategies targeted for each year level. It is important to continue and practise these facts at home.
