Dear Parents and Carers
I’d like to acknowledge the work of our P&C. Many hours of volunteer work go on behind the scenes organising events and fundraisers for our community. I’d like to acknowledge the work of Rashi who has put many hours into organising the tea towel fundraiser. I’ve seen pictures of the tea towels and they look fantastic. I can't wait for them to arrive .Please remember all orders are to be placed by Friday 20 October.
The P&C is also holding a school disco on Thursday 26 October, we would love to see you there!
(Prep - Year 2) 3.30pm-4.30pm
(Year 3 – Year 4) 5.00pm-6.00pm
(Year 5 – Year 6) 6.15pm-7.15pm
Stay tuned for details to follow soon.
Car parking
I’d like to thank the majority of our community for doing the right thing when driving, parking and using the designated pick-up and drop-off zones. A few reminders.
- The bus zone is off limits from 8.00am – 4.00pm.
- Please do not use the kindergarten carpark to drop off Mango Hill students. This car park is to only be used for kindergarten students.
- Drive to the speed limits.
- When driving an electronic scooter, please wear a helmet, do not double your child and slow down.
Fundamentally, we have these signed road rules to help keep our students safe. Members of the leadership team will continue to patrol these areas. Our school Crossing Supervisors do an amazing job in such a busy environment with the sheer number of cars and students. Please make their job easier by following signed directions.
Throughout Term 4 the school will be holding many fun events. As a school, we ask that you consider and be respectful to our neighbours when parking.
Reminders
Class preferences
if you have any matters you would like us to consider for your child’s class placement in 2024, please complete a Class Considerations Form and return to Jasmine Benfer jbenf10@eq.edu.au by Thursday 26 October.
Please see Class Consideration form below.
If your child will not be returning to MHSS in 2024, please let us know so we can ensure our staffing and resources are as accurate as possible.
Please see below student leaving form that would need to be returned to the office.
Gold Badge Awards
Nominations are due no later than next Friday 20 October, 2023 for Gold Badge Awards. Students in Years 3-6 can apply for a gold badge for academic, sport and/or cultural excellence. I encourage students and parents to read the nomination forms and apply for one or more badges if they wish to. Students who meet the criteria will be awarded a gold badge. Please see nomination form below.
Care Class
Students will be exploring the topic of ‘stress’ in next week’s Care Class. Students will proactively identify what can cause an individual's stress (good and bad). Students will be made aware that stress responses can make us heightened and at times, when heightened, our learning capacity diminishes. They will explore how this can then result in poor relations and poor behaviour choices. Students will identify their own triggers of stress and the best way to manage these.
Have a wonderful week

2024 Pace Placements
We are very excited as we continue our journey moving to Pace Classroom placements in 2024 as part of our wider Reach Framework. Pace classrooms are designed to meet the differentiated needs of students demonstrating very high academic achievement in multiple learning areas. To further ensure we continue to support the wellbeing and connection of our learners, Pace classrooms will be engaging in collaborative learning experiences and curriculum areas with their peers from neighbouring classes.
To support the identification of students suitable for a Pace classroom, a combination of subjective and objective measures will be utilised. This includes summative data from all learning areas, NAPLAN Data, Individual Curriculum Plans and specific tests to identify gifted and talented students. In some cases, to support triangulation of data, further standardised testing may be required for a small number of students (e.g. PAT Testing, Nagilieri/Raven Non-Verbal Assessments). This data collection along with subjective measures are used as part of the identification process.
We look forward to continuing to enhance and enrich the learning of all our students at Mango Hill State School.
OSHC Enquiries
Any families with an enquiry for the new OHSC provider please send all information to mhssoshc@mangohillss.eq.edu.au.
End of Year Concert
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘What makes me stressed’. We will also be consolidating this focus throughout next week.
We will be revisiting ‘What stresses you’, ‘How you feel when you are stressed’ and ways we can manage our stresses. Each of us differ in both what makes us stressed and how we respond to it. Students will discuss various techniques to help with stress management.

What a great week it has been in Prep. Week one has been and gone and so many amazing events are happening as we begin our preparation for Year 1.
Swimming Superstars
Last week we began our swimming program. Our swimming superstars demonstrated the Mango Hill value of respect when travelling on the bus and meeting our new swimming instructors. What a great way to demonstrate respect to others in our community! Remember to pack swimmers, towel, swimming cap, spare underwear, T-shirt and thongs/slides to wear to the pool each week.
Pre-prep Transitions and Playgroup
This Friday we welcome our 2024 Prep students for their first of four transitions mornings. Please remember bookings are required for this event. We would love to see as many future students as possible. We also have our playgroup continuing this term each Friday morning from 8:45am-9:45am in the Piazza. Such a great way to connect with our community whilst enjoying a coffee from Sole Café.
Each Day Counts
With so many amazing events and learning opportunities happening in Term 4, our final term in Prep is sure to fly by. Remember it is important to make each day count by attending school. We understand that sickness happens from time to time, however it is not ok to ‘just be away’. Missing one day per week adds up to missing two full weeks across a term. We love seeing the smiling faces of our students at school each day.
Have a great week

Being Creative in Year 1
We are working hard in Year 1 to be creative! We’re exploring narratives this term, using The Lighthouse Keeper series. Our goal is: To be an author who creates an exciting narrative.
Developing original ideas can be tricky. It’s hard to “put yourself out there” creatively. We need to praise the effort, not just the outcome.
Being creative is easier if you’re involved in creative things. Exploring the world, seeing the possibilities, building vocabulary through new experiences - all of these things help us to build our skills of creativity.

Over the weekend, my family explored the local environment by visiting the pink lakes at Boondall Wetlands. It was fascinating to see how the blue green algae turned the water pink in the ponds! I’ve shown many students these photos this week and they were mesmerised by them!

Exploring Money in Year 2
This term the Year 2s are exploring money. They are learning to recognise each of the Australian coins and notes and to count mixed collections of them. The students are also learning to read and write amounts and compare if they have enough to make purchases.
There are lots of ways you can help your child develop their confidence with money.
- Allow your child to play with money at home. Give them an opportunity to explore the coins and notes in their money box.
- Do a coin rubbing by placing a coin under a piece of paper and rub a crayon over the top. Talk to your child about what animals they see and who is on the back of each of the coins.
- Allow your child to pay for items at the shop. Show them the coins and notes you are using to pay for items.
- Count pocket money and money in your child’s money box. Talk about which coins could be traded in for a note of the same value (e.g. 3 x $1 and 1 x $2 coin could be traded for 1 x $5)
- If there is something special your child is saving up for, talk about how much money they have and then how much they need to save.
The students in 2M have been busy making different amounts using coins of mixed denomination.

Every Day Counts in Year 3
You have probably heard the expression “Every day counts” when it comes to attendance at school. This is not just a catch cry. This saying is evidence-based. Please support your child to attend school every day where possible. This will help your child reach their potential. We understand that children get colds, family events arise and some absences are unavoidable. However, in cases where there is an ongoing concern with attendance we want to partner with you to find ways for your child to attend school. Please contact your child’s class teacher if you wish to discuss ways to support your child in this regard.
If you know your child is leaving school on or before the end of the term and they will not be returning to our school in 2024, please let our office staff and your child’s class teacher know as soon as possible. Likewise, if you are planning an extended holiday and will not be returning on the first day of school next year please let our office staff know the expected date of return to school in 2024.
Learning in Year 3
In Math, students are learning about money. We are exploring and learning about money and solving real world problems involving money. What a fabulous time to enjoy the many opportunities to learn about money together that you and your child experience daily! When you are paying for something, ask your child to calculate the change you expect to receive and what combination of notes and coins would make that amount. When you are playing, consider incorporating the concept of problem solving with money in your games.
Hats Please
Each and every day, students should wear their hats to and from school and at each break. Teachers are helping your children by ensuring they head off to play wearing a hat. If your child is not wearing their hat when they leave the house in the morning, please prompt them to head back into grab it as they need it at school.
Finally, I want to share a few snaps from swimming lessons …

Learning in Year 5
I had the pleasure of visiting 5G this week to be part of their Maths lesson on financial planning. They worked collaboratively to solve a real world problem where they had to plan a holiday to the United States. They had a budget of $5000 and had to incorporate financial decisions around accommodation, activities and food. They worked together to discuss reasonable choices and provided feedback to each other. Safe to say, they are ready to head to Flight Centre!
Hats please!
Each and every day, students should wear their hats to and from school and at each break. Some Year 5 students report that they have misplaced their hat or that they are forgetting to wear it to school. Could you please help us by doing a check to ensure your child still has their hat.

Learning in Year 6
There’s been no time lost in learning for our Year 6 students to start Term 4. We know this is always a busy term, particularly towards the end, so our teachers are working particularly hard now to make the most of the available learning time. This week, our students have been learning about electric circuits, algebraic rules and equations, writing diary entries using clues from a point in time in history, to name just a few.
This week, some of our Year 6 classes have also started some whole class sessions with our Student Welfare Officer on ‘preparing for high school’. These sessions are a chance for students to share their excitement as well as their worries about high school, with our Student Welfare Officer providing some ideas and strategies to ensure they feel prepared.
Public Speaking and Debating
This week is a busy week for many of our Year 5 and 6 students. On Tuesday night, we had 8 students competing in the Lions Club public speaking competition. Congratulations to Alex, Sesini, Anh and Mila from Year 5, and to Shivika, Franco, Vandan and Wontaa from Year 6. An amazing results from Sesini who took out 3rd place in the Year 5 competition and from Wontaa who won the Year 6 competition. Thank you also to Mrs Koch for her support of these students.
Tonight, we have our Year 5 and 6 debating teams competing at Ascot State School. We know they will represent our school with pride. We can’t wait to hear how they go!

Cybersafety and communicating online
In Year 6 and in the lead up to high school, many of our students are regularly engaging online with their peers and others through games, messages and social media. We highly recommend parents continue to monitor their children’s use of their devices and how they interact with them. For some helpful resources for parents regarding online safety, check out the eSafety commissioner website: https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents

Scholastic Book Club
Last week we distributed the Scholastic Book Club brochures for October. Book Club is a great way to purchase some lovely new books for our families and also support our school. A percentage of all sales is returned to the school in the form of Scholastic points that allows us to purchase new books for the our Hub collection. Thank you in anticipation of your support.
We are only able to accept online orders and all orders are due by Monday 16 October.
Once the orders are finalised, the books are usually delivered within a week or two. When the books arrive we will need a handful of willing volunteers to help us check and distribute the books. If you are able to spare an hour or so, please email Suzette (shol0@eq.edu.au) and we can negotiate a suitable time.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Congratulations to all those who participated in the 2024 Premier’s Reading Challenge. The certificates have been received back from the Premier and will be distributed this week. Even though the challenge has now finished, there are still plenty of reasons to keep reading!
The Hub is open every morning from 8.15am and until 3pm every afternoon. We look forward to seeing you there soon!
Accelerated Reader
Congratulations to all those AR readers who have set new goals for Term 4. It has been great to see lots of eager borrowers visiting the Hub to find the perfect book for their next quiz.
This week we have seen a small group of students start AR and complete their first quiz. What a great start to the term! Don’t forget to ask if you’d like help finding a suitable AR book or support to complete a quiz. Ms Holm loves to read and is always keen to help out with a tricky quiz!
Congratulations to Emily who this week reached her goal of 1 million words! As you can see from the photo Emily is very proud of her hard work throughout the year that has resulted in this great achievement!
Congratulations also to Avery who reached her goal of 5 million words! This is an extraordinary achievement and a great example of what is possible if you set a goal and work towards this, taking small steps every single week.
We are very proud of Emily and Avery and have added their photos to our special AR Millionaires display in the Hub.
Have a fantastic week

Year 3-4 AFL Training Program
At Mango Hill State School, we have a program for students in Year 4-6 called the “AFLQ Schools Cup”. Each year a MHSS AFL boys and a girl’s team is selected with students completing training at school and then playing in the AFLQ Schools Cup competition throughout the year.
In Term 4 we will be running an optional afterschool 4-week training program for year 3 and 4 students to develop the skills (punting, handballing, marking….) as well as AFL game rules and awareness. We would like your son/daughter if in Year 3-4 to attend if they are interested.
Dates/Times: Tuesdays 3.00pm-4.00pm - 31 Oct, 7, 14, 21 Nov
Venue: MHSS Oval
Cost: Nil
Forms: If your son/daughter is interested, a permission form needs to be collected from Mr Hills in the PE Office and returned prior to the first session.
Activity Risk: This is a medium risk activity (risk assessment completed by Mango Hill State School staff in conjunction with AFL QLD employees). The program has been designed to teach skills and rules of AFL. There will be no tackling in all games and activities and instead a “touch” version will be played. Mouthguards are not compulsory for AFL training sessions, but are recommended.
Equipment/Uniform: No equipment is required but it is advisable for students to wear a change of clothes if they like. Students can also provide their own protective equipment (mouthguards) and can wear football boots (no metal tags), but again this is optional. If they do not have football boots, normal shoes can be worn.
