News from our Partners

We have had another fantastic week at Mango Hill State School. Our Year 2s have been enjoying Italian gelato whilst some of our Year 3s have been busy exploring bike education.
As previously communicated, we are having a big push on students being in the Mango Hill State School uniform, showing Care for Self and taking pride in their school. I extend my thanks to our parents and caregivers for the support they have shown with this. We have many more students now in the Mango Hill uniform. If you are requiring support with this, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher.
On Friday we received the news that our Wakakirri team made it through to the finals. The finals will be held on Friday 8 September 2023 at Logan Entertainment Centre. We would love you to join us in cheering our team on. Tickets can be purchased from www.loganarts.com.au or by calling Logan Entertain Centre Box Office on 34125626.
By now, you should have received information about parent teacher interviews. I encourage all families to take part in these. They provide an excellent opportunity for you to check in as to how your child is progressing academically, socially and emotionally. Parent teacher interviews are a great way to model to our students that education is a partnership that occurs between parents/carers and the school. A Parent Teacher Interview booking can be made with your child teacher by clicking on the following link. https://eq.sobs.com.au/pt3/parent.php?schoolid=70371
I’m now starting to get super excited about our Arts Fest. There’s certainly a buzz in the air. The school would love for you to join us on Wednesday 6 September in an afternoon/evening of ARTS fun.
Last week we held our Book Week Parade. It was lovely to see so many of our students and staff participate in this fun event. The week aims to promote the love of reading. The more we read, the more we learn. Thank you to our families for the work completed behind the scenes preparing the outfits for the day.

Our P&C is run by willing and generous volunteers. This year our P&C will have contributed $50, 000 towards the school to progress the learning and wellbeing of our students. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of our P&C. Many members have full time jobs and yet make the time to give back to our school. It is truly appreciated by our school. Please get behind our P&C and if you are able to please support this week’s Fathers’ Day stall.

Lastly a reminder that this Friday is a student free day. Our staff completed the professional development hours allocated for this day in January, so our school will be closed on Friday.
Have a wonderful week

Speaking and Listening
This week we have started our new speaking and listening unit in English. Our students have been busy creating short imaginary, funny poems that they will share with their class. This unit is such a fun way to practise selecting words that rhyme. We have been listening in to the end sound of words to check if they rhyme or not.
Later this term we will share our poems with our classmates and discuss what we liked about their poems. This week I visited Prep B where they were practising rhyming words for snake and created a funny poem ready to share with their classmates.

Ready Breaks
Each day across Team Mango we use our ready breaks to help us maintain focus and regulate our bodies and minds. We often do this as a whole class, giving ourselves a chance to give our bodies ‘energy up’ or an ‘energy down’ that helps us regulate. Energy up breaks can help get us up and moving whilst our energy down is a calming, quieter break. Our favourite brain breaks in Prep so far have been ‘Guess that sound’, desk drumming, mindfulness and of course a dance battle.

Year 1 Land
So many celebrations in Year 1 over the past week! We’ve celebrated Book Week and Father’s Day.
Our Book Week parade was full of joy as we celebrated all things reading and books. Book Week is such a time to shine, for little poppets who might not be sporty spice, but are more a reading spice!
Reading to and with your young child is the number one predictor of school success. The more words we know, the more words we know. Research over the years, time and time again, has proven that if a child has a broad vocabulary, if they know stories and their parents read to them, they have better overall life outcomes.
So it’s not just Ms White saying please read at home, it’s literally science!
Another important research finding is around boys and reading. If boys see their fathers, father figures and / or primary care givers reading for pleasure, they are much more likely to read for pleasure. I know in my house that this is a challenge - I’m the voracious reader, my husband is not. Interestingly, he has recently told our children he is going to read a book these upcoming holidays and the kids are pretty excited. There’s been a fair bit of discussion about what book, what theme etc…
And you’d better believe I’ll be there, taking pictures to reinforce the joy of reading for pleasure!
PS - The current front runner is Hover Craft Racer, a Matthew Reilly book that is really for young adults. My suggestion. Fast paced, filled with action and appropriate enough for him to read aloud to the kids after he reads it, should he love it like I hope he does!

Celebrating Special Events in Year 2
There have been so many wonderful events to celebrate in Year 2 over the past week!
Book Week Parade
Last Friday we had our annual Book Week parade. This year’s theme was Read. Grow. Inspire. The Year 6 students presented at our parade sharing the ways books and reading help to grow and inspire them. We also had a chance to dress up as our favourite book characters and parade in the hall. Here are some superstars from 1/2B all dressed up in their costumes.

Italian Gelato Incursion
The children in Year 2 have been hard at work practising their Italian language skills with Signora McEvoy and Signora Verster. On Monday and Tuesday this week, the students had the opportunity to use their language skills by participating in a real-life experience where they needed to order and buy a Gelato from an authentic Italian speaking Gelataio. The best part of the whole incursion was getting to eat the delicious gelato. There were some very happy customers in 2O at the end of the experience.

Father’s Day Stay and Play
It was so lovely to spend time with loved ones at our Father’s Day Stay and Play afternoons. There was lots of time for puzzles, reading, construction and craft. We hope all our loved ones enjoy their special on Sunday!

Have a wonderful week

Learning in Year 3
Congratulations to our hard-working learners in Year 3. Assessment continued this week and teachers are proud of how far their students have progressed. In 3C, Ms Gough is proud of her readers and Ms Stewart is thrilled with her writers.
We all took the time to have fun and celebrate books and reading last Friday at our Year 3 Book Week parade. Thank you to the parents and friends who joined us. Huge thanks are in order to all of our families who were so clever and creative with their book week costumes.
I have included a couple of photos for those who couldn’t join us.

Growth mindset
Our whole Year 3 teaching team including our amazing inclusion team appreciate the support and messages you share with your children about growth mindset. After last semester’s awards ceremony (in Week 1 this semester) many students shared with me that they had set a goal to earn a Principals Award in Semester 2. Week 8 of Term 3 is a great time to check in with your little one about how they are tracking with their goal and to remind them that if they take some steps towards their goal every day, all the small successes will add up to big achievements. We need to remember that this applies to each of us and to everyone we know.
Week 9 and 10
We are excited to attend the Instrumental Music concert for Year 2 and 3 audiences on Thursday of Week 9. We will be the audience for our Senior Concert Band. We are looking forward to seeing our families at our Wandani Arts Fest on Wednesday 6 September. Remember to mark your calendars for our Week 10 Stay and Play in Year 3. We have so much to look forward to!
Swimming
Year 3 are swimming in Term 4. Details and invoices will drop shortly on Q Parents.
Take care and have a wonderful week

Learning in Technology
It was wonderful seeing students in Year 4 begin building their pinball machines this week in their Technology lessons. This term, our students have been generating and recording design ideas and communicating their ideas through annotated drawings. They have been describing how their design features can be used to produce a pinball machine and referencing forces and material properties. Students were so engaged, using a range of materials to build their machines and thank you to families for supplying some of the boxes too!
Check out some of these great photos below!

Camp at Runaway Bay
Our camp is fast approaching, thank you to everyone who has returned the required camp forms so far. More information regarding the medication and forms will be emailed home shortly. However, please remember to complete the following tasks.
- Complete the PAPER COPY of FORM C that will be sent home and return to class. This document is required by the camp facility.
- Complete the online consent via QParents.

Care for Learning
This week our Year 5 students have started their Speaking and Listening Unit. The purpose of the unit this term is to participate in Pair-Share discussion, sharing a collaborative shape poem to answer the question “Why would people read and connect with my poem?”. After the last 7 weeks of learning to write a text in response to a poem, our students are ready for this next step. I’m looking forward to hearing them share their thoughts.
Book Week Parade
We love reading!! On Friday it was exciting to see our students dressed as a character from one of their favourite books. I saw lots of students in some amazing costumes and it was great hearing from our students what they love to read and hear them share their excitement for reading. Thank you to our parents, carers and friends who were able to celebrate on the day and also to those who helped create some fantastic costumes. Well done!

Learning in Year 6
I once again had the pleasure of visiting 6D during the week as they began a new Maths unit on making links between fractions, decimals and percentages. Mrs Drummond challenged 6D by providing them with a range of tasks that required students to think deeply and reason. After answering some “Which One Doesn’t Belong” questions as a class, 6D students had to create their own WODB questions to try and trick their friends. It was fantastic to see students thinking deeply about potential misconceptions as they created these.
Earlier this week, I also popped into visit 6W and 6V as they were working away at calculating percentage discounts. It was great to see the enthusiasm and confidence of the students in 6V solving a range of percentage discounts with larger numbers. In 6W, students were working collaboratively to solve problems and teach one another, something that 6W are always very good at!

Year 6 Graduation – fundraising help
Thank you to the many parents who have volunteered to support at the Arts Fest in various ways. We can still use more support! Please let me know if you can spare some time on Wednesday 6 September at bxmil3@eq.edu.au .
MHSSC Transition Day
The first MHSSC transition day will be a half day in Week 10 of this term. For students to attend, they must be enrolled and had their enrolment interview. The final opportunity to do this before the first transition day is on Thursday 7 September. Information regarding enrolments, including submitting an enrolment enquiry to access the enrolment application form, can be found on the College Website.
Have a great week

Book Week Competition
We were so very excited to receive so many entries in this year’s Book Week Competition. We have over 40 entries and they are all displayed in the Hub.
Voting is now open to choose the winners. All students are welcome to vote and should visit the Hub to collect a voting slip. Students can only vote once but we would love to have as many students as possible helping to choose the winners. Mind you, it will be tricky to choose just one favourite – there are so many fabulous entries, all focussing on the Book week theme “Read, grow and inspire!”
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The PRC for 2023 has now closed. We will send off our data to the Premier’s office and should receive our certificates early next term. Thank you to everyone who participated.
Speaking and Listening
This week our students from Prep to Year 6 begun learning some new skills and understandings as they embarked on their new English unit, focussing on speaking and listening. These skills are super important for our study in English, but also for life in general. We all speak and listen every single day so these units are a great way for students to develop their skills. In some year levels, students will make a presentation to their class, while in other year levels students will speak and listen within small groups.
You might like to practice at home too… why not discuss your favourite foods, activities, holiday destinations, clothes or hobbies at dinner tonight. Discussing our ideas with others is such a great way to speak and to listen – especially when we need to wait our turn and then respond to others’ ideas and opinions. We look forward to watching our students develop their skills in this area in the coming weeks.
Have a fantastic week

Met North Track & Field Results
Last week MHSS had a record 12 athletes compete at the Metropolitan North Track & Field trials. All students who participated qualified based on their performance at the Pine Rivers Track & Field trial. Congratulations to all 12 students who made it to this very high level of competition. A great achievement!
Individual Highlights
We would like to celebrate some great individual achievements from the carnival as well. The following students were able to place high enough in their events to be selected in the Met North Regional Track & Field Team. These students will now compete at the Queensland State Track & Field Trials later in the year, which is a special accomplishment.

The uniform shop will be closed this Friday September 1 for the Student Free Day. We will resume our normal opening hours next week.
With the weather warming up did you know we have long sleeve polos? Long sleeve polos can be a great addition to the uniform as we enter spring. Lighter than the jacket and jumper, long sleeve polos can be great for this shifting seasonal weather, when it's too hot for the jacket, but still a bit cool for short sleeves. Come in and try one on!
We also offer online orders. Orders can be placed through our website any time at www.wearitto.com.au/schools/mango-hill-state-school
Mango Hill State School - Schools - Wearitto Wearitto delivers high quality uniforms in a way that makes things easy for schools and parents. We create clothing for school, work and play. |
Orders are packed through the uniform shop during our opening hours and an email is sent to let you know when your order is ready to be picked up, or, if you'd like your student to bring the uniforms home with them, email us at mangohill@wearitto.com.au with your student's name and class name and we can get it to them.
