A great start to Term 2!
It is wonderful to see the students return in such a positive manner after the Easter break. There has been plenty of excitement catching up with teachers and old friends and making new friends. A special welcome to families new to our school community!
It is so lovely to see so many children wearing their school uniform with pride.
Just look at their happy faces!

ANZAC Day
Next Tuesday is ANZAC Day – an important day to commemorate and remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. On Monday 24th April, we will hold a whole school parade from 9.00-9.30am in Gigum Hall to commemorate this important day. Students are asked to wear formal school uniform where possible (unless they have a PE or dance lesson on Monday). All parents are invited to join us and are asked to sit in the tiered seating up the back. If you are a defence force family or you wish to lay a wreath, please make your way to the front special guest area. Students are welcome to wear medals of loved ones who served. Please remind them how precious these are and ask them to take care and not to remove in case they get misplaced.
Each year level will make a wreath to lay. Please consider sending in some flowers or greenery on Friday.
The Pine Rivers March on Tuesday has been limited to 50 students per school so our student leaders and student councillors have been invited to attend to represent our school.
A reminder that Tuesday is a public holiday for ANZAC day.
Have a wonderful week

This Friday and throughout week 1, we are focussing on ‘ANZAC commemoration and gratitude’. Students will attend a whole school parade Friday morning in the Gigum Hall. We will take the opportunity as a whole school to remember the soldiers who fought in wars and helped shaped our nation.
Of our four cares (Care for Self, Care for Others, Care for Learning, Care for our School Environment) learning about gratitude is caring for ourselves. Students will learn how to focus on what is good in our lives and being thankful for the things that we have.
When I am grateful:
- I focus on experiences and not so much material things,
- I am more empathetic and forgiving,
- I am less stressful and worried,
- I sleep better.
Useful resources about ANZAC day and being grateful:
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rapkYgnXxWA a mini lesson about ANZAC day.
- Write down 1 thing you are grateful for every evening before bed or share at the dinner table.
- Thank you notes to family or members of the community can help share gratitude.
ICAS 2023
Mango Hill State School will once again be participating in the 2023 ICAS Assessments. ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Digital Technologies. Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition. Top performers will be eligible for medals and the opportunity to attend a special award ceremony to have their academic excellence publicly recognised.
Please find attached the details regarding registration and Online Parent Payment System. Specific details of assessment days and times will be released in the near future.

Back to Prep
It has been so lovely seeing our Prep friends back at school and ready to learn.
This term in Prep, we will be writing about some of our own adventures, to share ideas with others. In order to piece together some ideas in written form, we do need to be able to talk out our ideas orally first. This is something you can help with at home. When we talk about our adventures encourage us to share three events that happened in order. Encourage us to add interesting words when we are sharing what we did and how we felt. This helps us to add detail to our retell making it more interesting for our audience. If you see us playing or practising our writing, just remember in Prep, we don’t expect correct spelling in the first semester. But we do love to see our Prep friends practising and giving it their best go!
It has been super exciting visiting classrooms this week and seeing the excitement and pride they are taking in their writing. We can’t wait to see how they continue to develop their writing as the year goes on.
Have a great week

Something Slightly New in Year 1!
I hope everyone enjoyed a lovely break! Even if you had to work and the kids were in care, there is something nice about not having to make school lunches or get uniforms ready, isn’t there?!!
We did our usual holiday trip to the cultural precinct at Southbank. I will be so sad when my kids decide they are too old to visit the dinosaurs! We discovered that if you venture into the art gallery (we usually stay on the bottom level), they actively encourage you to use their art materials and draw, using the art work to inspire you. If you have a budding artist, what an amazing experience. And, it’s free!
This week, we have started something slightly new in Year 1. We have always had ways to settle students into the school day, but you’ll see that we are now following a really specific morning routine called a Morning Meeting and this routine is the same, across all classes. It’s a strategy used by Berry Street educators that they shared with us when they visited at the start of the year and the aim is to provide a Consistent, Predictable Routine and to be a Consistent, Predictable Adult.
Children thrive on routine. Whilst we can’t predict everything, having routines and following them consistently helps brains to be less stressed and less “on edge”. Starting each school day in a consistent way helps our little ones to be ready to learn.
If you find it tricky to get your little one to school on time, please reach out and have a chat. We’d love to help you find the right consistent, predictable routine that works for you, so that your child doesn’t miss the important Morning Meeting in the classroom to start their school day.
This term we're off to Nudgee Beach for an excursion. The letter will be out to you very soon. It’s such a lovely part of our local world. We can’t wait!

Have a great week

Have a wonderful week
What a Wonderful Week to Start to Term 2.
The whole Year 3 team including teachers, teacher aides and me have loved seeing our students again and hearing about holidays. This term, our school theme is Gratitude. In each class, students will learn about the attitude of gratitude and earn points towards an end of term reward.
Learning in Year 3
It has been a pleasure to see the enthusiasm of your children for their learning from the very first moments of Term 2. One of our highlights is surely starting to read “Charlotte’s Web” together. This week we are also starting an exciting art piece. Ms Shanahan from 3S is visiting all the classes and sharing her knowledge and talent, collaborating with all the Year 3 teachers so that students create artworks inspired by Indigenous Art.
Playing in Year 3
Students have been excited to see their friends again and are showing their Team Mango spirit by taking turns, listening to others, and problem solving so everyone feels happy and safe. This term, we continue our Women’s League in Soccer Club each Wednesday at second break. Our Ball Games Club which runs at second break on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday is exceptionally popular. We are lucky that two of our PE teachers, Mr Lisha and Ms Richards, have an endless repertoire of games. If your child loves to read or play indoor games, encourage them to try Hub Club for a change of pace.
Date claimers
This term is full of special events such as our ANZAC Day parade, NAIDOC celebrations, Athletics Carnivals and so on. Our Year 3 excursion is looming! If you haven’t already completed permission and payment for the excursion please do so this week. Three classes go on each of the excursion days, namely:
Tuesday 2 May – 3C, 3M, 3T
Wednesday 3 May – 3B, 3J, 3K
Thursday 4 May – 3L, 3S, 3W.
If you have any questions or concerns, please check in with your child’s class teacher.

Take care and have a wonderful week

Year 4 News
Welcome to Term 2! I have been thrilled to see our Year 4 students with big smiles on their faces as they have returned to school this week. It has been wonderful to see the students reconnecting with their teachers and friends and diving straight into the learning for this term.
Our students have leapt into their first Maths unit for the term on odd and even numbers. Students have spent time investigating the properties of odd and even numbers and are applying this concept to solve more complex problems. Our teachers work hard to provide fun and engaging lessons every day for our students, with a focus on ensuring they have clarity in understanding what they are learning and why. All Year 4 classes will be learning about odd and even numbers in the first few weeks of this term. I encourage you to ask your children about their learning in Maths, so that they can consolidate their understanding of this important concept.

Uniform
A friendly reminder about uniforms as we return to school. We encourage all of our students to wear the Mango Hill State School uniform correctly and with pride every day. This includes wearing all black shoes, plain white socks and the MHSS jumper/jacket during the colder weather. Please remember to label your child's jumper. It is important that students also have a MHSS bag, or a plain black or navy bag as an alternative. Thank you for your support in helping our students to uphold the uniform expectations.

Welcome Back for Term 2!
I am privileged to act as Deputy Principal for Year 5 for the first half of this term and I am looking forward to working with you and all our Year 5 students and teachers. I hope you had a wonderful break with your children and are feeling refreshed and ready to go for the new term. It has been so nice to see students reconnecting with their teachers and friends and dive straight into the learning.
This term we have some exciting events planned, including our ANZAC day parade, interschool sport, first aid training, and our Year 5 Camp!
I am looking forward to a fantastic term of learning together.
Have a super week

Welcome Back to Term 2
Our Year 6 students have hit the ground running for Term 2, leaping straight into their learning including working with fractions in Maths, and persuading others about how authors communicate a message through their texts, in English.
While there was plenty of excitement about the new units of work, it was hard to compete with the excitement of catching up with friends and classmates again, with lots of smiles and holiday stories being shared on the first day back. I was lucky enough to visit some classes on Monday morning who were sharing their Easter school holiday memories. It was great to hear about so many positive experiences during the school break.
Term 2 is another huge term for our Year 6 students. In addition to the learning, we have events to take part in such as ANZAC day, Interschool sport, Italian Incursion, Athletics carnival, and visits from the local high schools who will run some activities. There will also be lots of preparation for camp, which will take place in early Term 3. The excitement for this is already starting to build across the Year 6 cohort.
Term 2 Theme – Gratitude
This term, our schoolwide theme is ‘gratitude’. Learning to be thankful and express gratitude is such an important life skill for children as well as adults. It is something that sounds easier than what it actually is! Throughout the term, our students will learn about what gratitude is and what it looks like, as they develop the skills to show and express gratitude in their lives. We encourage all of our families to discuss this with their children too. A great question to ask them at pick-up and/or drop-off could be, “what are you grateful for today?”

Deputy Principal –Year 6

Term 2 Curriculum
We are so excited to be back at school with so many opportunities for learning in Term 2. This term students will be busy continuing their learning in English and Maths, as well as in Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), Science, Technology, Italian, HPE and The Arts. In The Arts Learning Area, students will work with their class teachers on their visual art work. Each student will make an art work, focussing on an area of visual arts. For example, it might be mosaic making or print making or even creating a sculpture. We can’t wait to see these masterpieces created in the coming weeks.
Borrowing from the Hub
Borrowing from the Hub has began again. Students are welcome to borrow when their classes visit for borrowing, and are also welcome to borrow before and after school. The Hub is open every morning from 8.15am and every afternoon until 3pm.
Don’t forget to bring a library bag when borrowing to help care for our precious books. Students may use a special library bag from the Uniform shop or any kind of cloth or plastic bag.
Scholastic Book Club
This week we have received the brochures for the Scholastic Book Club. This is a great opportunity to purchase some lovely new books and also support our school. A percentage of all sales is returned to the school to purchase books for our Hub collection, so your support of this program is always appreciated. We only accept online orders (see the details at the bottom of the brochure) and all orders are due by Thursday 27 April. It will not be possible to accept orders after this date.
Hub displays
This week in the Hub we have lots of new displays to entice our readers. We have lots of new pokemon books with a new adventure in each. You don’t have to be a pokemon fan to enjoy these so pop on down to the Hub to have a look!
We also have lots of books highlighting Anzac Day. We are also awaiting a very special Anzac display so be on the lookout for something extra very soon!
Have a fantastic week

Term 2 PE
Well this term is all about Sports Day (Prep-2) and the Athletics Carnival (Yr3-6). All students in PE from Prep-Year 6 will focus on preparing for these big events which are held at the end of Term 2.
More information will come out later in the term but at this stage our confirmed dates are as follows.
- Week 10 Monday 19 June – Junior Sports Day (all Year Prep, 1 and 2 students compete)
- Week 10 Tuesday 20 June – Senior Athletics Carnival – Discus, 200m/800m Finals (Some Yr 3-6 students compete)
- Week 10 Wednesday 21 June - Senior Athletics Carnival – 8 & 9 Year Old students (Year 3’s and some Year 4’s compete)
- Week 10 Thursday 22 June - Senior Athletics Carnival – 10,11 & 12 Year Old students (Some Year 4’s, all Year 5’s & 6’s compete)
Due to large student numbers at Mango Hill SS, we have a split Senior Athletics Carnival. This is to ensure students get the maximum opportunity to participate, students have enough space to compete safely and we have enough room for all spectators who attend. It will be a busy end to the term but we are thoroughly looking forward to it!
Interschool Sport (Year 5-6)
A reminder that all Year 5 and 6 students will get the chance to participate in the Pine Rivers Interschool Sports Competition. Students compete against teams from other schools in a variety of sports. The confirmed dates for Pine Rivers Interschool Sport in Term 2 are as follows.
- Friday 12 May (Term 2 Week 4)
- Friday 26 May (Term 2 Week 6)
- Friday 9 June (Term 2 Week 8)
Pine Rivers District Sporting Trials (10-12yr Old’s)
Pine Rivers District School Sport offers 10-12 Year old students the opportunity to try and make the Pine Rivers District team for a variety of sports. If successful, they compete at Metropolitan North trials and carnivals, with the possibility of selection into teams competing at State events. Students must be nominated by their school in order to attend a district trial or carnival.
District trials are held at various venues within the Pine Rivers District (e.g. Les Hughes Sports Complex) and are not attended by MHSS staff. A Pine Rivers District Coach and Manager will facilitate the trial.
Students who express an interest to trial can collect forms from our PE office. They will be given the Pine Rivers District forms and the relevant trial information. Completed district forms are to be returned to the PE office by the due date. Once the forms are collated, students will be nominated for the trial. Forms are then handed back to students and must then be taken to the coach/manager at the District Trials. Students will NOT be allowed to trial if district forms are not handed in completed. Unless specifically organised by the school, it is the parents’ responsibility to transport students to and from district trials.
Most Pine Rivers District trials are limited to students turning 11 or 12 years of age and who are considered at a high level in the sport e.g. Div. 1 or A Grade. Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming trials however are open for students turning 10, 11 and 12 years of age. Sports that students are able to trial for include the following.
- AFL
- Basketball
- Cricket
- Football (Soccer)
- Golf
- Hockey
- Netball
- Rugby League
- Rugby Union
- Softball
- Squash
- Tennis
- Touch
- Triathlon
Mango Hill can normally nominate up to three students for each district sport trial. If more than three students wish to be nominated Mango Hill will select the three best candidates for the trial. The selection of these students may be either based on past performances/current club form or through a selection trial at school.
If you are interested in your child trialling for Pine Rivers District more information can be obtained from the Mango Hill State School newsletter, with regular trial updates listed. You can also contact Mr Nick Hills - nhill96@eq.edu.au (MHSS PE Teacher) so he is aware of your intention to attend the trial.
