Colour Explosion
It was wonderful to see students having lots of fun at the Colour Explosion yesterday. Special thanks to our P & C and all the parents and staff who assisted.
This is a major fundraiser for the P & C. I encourage all families to seek sponsorship. This will stay open until Friday. All students who raise $10 or more can choose a prize. The prize portal will open on Saturday and students have a week to choose their prize.
The class who raises the most money will have a class party next term. There will also be prizes for the highest fundraiser in each year level.
I wonder which class will take the title?

Term 4 Swimming Timetable
A reminder that students in Prep, Year 2 and Year 3 start their swimming program from week one next term. Please see below for the swimming timetable. Please note all classes have six lessons. Please ensure you make payment before the end of this week and return permission note.
Last call for Tea Towels
We have a few tea towels left from our fundraiser this term for Prep to Year 5 classes. If you missed out, please pop into the canteen and pick one up for $15. A fantastic keepsake!
Farewell Helping Hands OSHC and Welcome PCYC!
Friday is our last day of Helping Hands OSHC. After 10 years of loyal service at our school, we are sad to say good-bye to our colleagues from Helping Hands. We thank them for the partnership and all their work establishing and maintaining a quality service. My personal special thanks to Shauna Nugent who has been an awesome coordinator for the past few years. Shauna has always worked closely with the school, focussing on the best outcomes for students. She will be greatly missed!
However, change is inevitable and we are excited by the new opportunities our new partnership with PCYC will bring. It was fantastic to see lots of happy students and parents at the family barbeque last week, meeting the PCYC team. I also spent time this week with the new coordinators Hayley and Vanessa and the extended team recently sharing our vision and values and how we can align the school and OSHC service. We are looking forward to a productive partnership focussed on ensuring OSHC is a great place for students to be! PCYC will be in service from Monday.

Term 3 Success
As Term 3 draws to a close, it is wonderful to reflect on all that we have achieved. My highlights this term include the following.
- Watching and talking with students about their learning as they work to be their best!
- Moving into our new classrooms and starting to use our new playground and multipurpose court.
- Celebrating the success of our teachers working hard to provide clarity in lessons and build connections with students and families.
- Hearing such wonderful feedback about our school from our CFN visitors.
- Standing at the front gate in the mornings, seeing the independence of our little ones as they confidently make their way to school as independent learners.
- Seeing students have a go at new things and learn from their mistakes!
- Talking with students each Friday about our focus of the week and how we can support each other and work together to feel happy and safe.
- Seeing our sport, debating and dance teams have such wonderful success.
- Chatting with parents and carers and learning more about what is important to families.
- Participating in all the special events this term including the Awards Ceremonies, NAIDOC Week, Book Week, Daffodil Day and the Colour Explosion.
Wishing you all a safe, happy holiday. I look forward to seeing you again when school resumes on Tuesday 4 October!
23 September is International Day of Sign Languages. This day acknowledges the importance of sign language in the full realisation of the human rights of people who are Deaf and hard of hearing. Around the world there are approximately 300 different sign languages used by more than 72 million people, including Auslan (Australian Sign Language) used here in our community every day. You may have seen Auslan being used at press conferences, signing for ministers and health officials and also here at school in classrooms and whole school events.
Here are some facts about sign languages.
- Sign language varies from country to country and also within different regions in a country.
- Sign language includes facial expressions, hand movements and position, gestures and body language. Any change in one of these components will change the entire meaning of the sign.
- Sign languages have their own grammar.
- The direction of the palm of the hand can change the meaning of the sign.
- Two movements of the same handshape can have different meanings.
- People who use sign language often use name signs to refer to specific people. These signs are specific to each person and do not require fingerspelling.
Happy International Day of Sign Languages!
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Positive Emotions”.
We are learning to identify, focus and grow on our positive emotions. Positive emotions are important for us in many ways. If we notice them and do things to help them grow, it can help us to be the best person we can. Noticing and growing positive emotions is part of caring for self and it helps us be available to care for others.
Positive emotions are transformational. The result of positive emotions is that we can "broaden and build". When we are worried, our focus becomes narrow and we can misread other people's good intentions. When we have positive emotions, our focus becomes wider and we recognise opportunities and when other people are trying to help us.
Wandani Arts Fest – NO MORE SLEEPS!
This is our first whole school gathering in quite some time and we’re really looking forward to it. Our Wandani Centre has been transformed into a real-life art gallery and it looks incredible. Each student in the school has created an individual art piece, displayed this week in our Wandani Centre art gallery. We are so proud of our artistic students and their wonderful creations. We’ve learned about how to interact with art pieces and how to respect the art gallery space. We know that we always walk in an art gallery, don’t ever touch the art (even if it’s ours!) and that we need to take time to reflect on the art pieces to really enjoy them.
Tonight, we will hold two art auctions; one at 5.30 and one at 6.30. Each class has created a piece of artwork with their buddy class and we know that every student in the school wants their class artwork hanging on their wall at home! This is a student council fundraiser, to raise funds for our school. Our fabulous friends at Ray White, North Lakes provide us with real life auctioneers to set the auction pace. There will be other entertainment on our piazza stage across the night; check out the program attached.
“Doors” open from 4.30 pm, with the official commencement at 5 pm. We anticipate the evening will end before 7.30 pm.
We have a range of activities for you to enjoy as a family, including the following.
-
Maker Space- free. Range of craft and construction activities and challenges.
-
STEM activities- free. Range of Science and Maths challenges.
-
Calico painting- free. Painting is free to participate and you can purchase tote bags later. We’re going to collaborate to paint large pieces of calico!(We still need enthusiastic sewers afterwards, who can turn our large, painted pieces of calico into tote bags, which we will sell from the café).
- Mandala Art- free. We’re going to decorate the paths with mandala. The mandala chalk art can be enjoyed by everyone for free!
- Henna Art- Donation. We have real henna and pretend henna available. We will have the ingredients for the henna listed on the sign at the activity and all students must be accompanied by their parents, for permission to engage in this activity. We have a significant amount of families in our school community who regularly use henna as an artform in their cultural celebrations. We do understand that some individuals may have skin sensitivities and allergies and we strongly suggest that you don’t participate if this applies to you. We’re asking for a donation towards our student council for the henna art.
- Story Telling- free. Times for the story telling in The Hub 5.45 pm, 6.15 pm, 6.45 pm.
- Caricatures- $25. We have an artist joining us! Wayne Fleming is a professional live cartoon and caricaturist. He will be in attendance and happy to capture portraits for you. Payment on the night for each drawing is $25.00. What a great way to remember this moment in time!
-
The Dock- free. We always try to have a quiet space for our students and families who may be overwhelmed with all the noise and all the activity. Duck into The Dock for a break, if you need to.
**Please see the attached map, drawn by our artistic senior student Anaya, so you can find all of the activities!**
Food, Food, Food!
Thank you to everyone who has pre-ordered their pizzas. Delivery will be at 5.15 ish and you can collect your pizza from around that time.
If you haven’t pre-ordered a pizza but still need dinner, our Year 6 families are running a sausage sizzle to raise money for the Year 6 graduation. Our P&C is opening the Sole Café to sell snacks and hot and cold drinks too.
And the most exciting part of the night…? The gelato cart! Our gelato selling friends will arrive before the end of the school day, so you can purchase gelato after school and at the Arts Fest. Two chances for gelato?!! Yes please!
Yarn and Eats
Thank you to our First Nations families who attended our Yarn and Eats this week. It is always great to connect with our community! Thank you to Dwayne from Moreton ATSICHS who came out to speak with parents and carers about their services.
Bandwidth Upgrade Friday 16 September
The Department of Education is embarking on a $190 million upgrade to boost bandwidth in schools and communities across the state. The first phase of this work will increase average internet speeds to 1Mbps per student, that is 40 times faster than the internet speeds in our schools as of 2021.
The work will occur this Friday and may take up to 4.5hrs and will result in limited Network Access and no telephone services for up to 3hrs, however the majority of sites completed to date experienced an outage of 30 minutes or less.
We do not know the exact time that the change-over will occur but during this time our phonelines will be diverted to a mobile phone. Please be kind to our staff and understand this will mean there may be delays in answering due to only 1 line being available. Please only call the office between 8am and 1pm for urgent messages.
If collecting your child early please don’t call, simply arrive at the office 10 mins earlier and we will contact the Class Teacher.
Absences can be emailed to studentabsence@mangohillss.eq.edu.au
You can also refer to our website for information and general questions www.mangohillss.eq.edu.au

End of Term 3 – We’ve Made It!
Same of us in Prep are limping across the finish line for the term. There’s been some big emotions in each Prep room over the past couple of weeks, as our youngest students tackle all the learning, all the social and all of their fatigue – all at the same time.
Many of our little ones are “melting down” at home. Some of them “melt down” at school. As parents and as educators, it’s really important to remember that we need to help our little ones to co-regulate. If our little people can’t settle themselves and have these big emotions, then they need our help to calm. This is okay, this is just where they are at. Co-regulation is the step before self-regulation!
There’s lot of tools that we use at school, to help our students be their best for learning. We encourage the following.
- Drinks of water.
- Movement breaks.
- Breathing exercises (blowing out the candles / smelling the flowers / rainbow breathing / figure 8 breathing).
- Using our class reset space.
- Taking some time away from peers.
- Spending some time with a trusted adult.
We are so proud of our Prep students; they have tackled so much learning this term. And in this last week of the term, they have the Colour Explosion and Wandani Arts Fest. Pat your little one on the back and say, “good job” as you move into holiday mode. They’ve all made gains and whilst there’s always things to work on, it’s really important that we stop and celebrate the successes!
I hope you get to enjoy some quality connection time with your Preppie, over the school holidays.

Term 3 Highlights
We’ve been busy in Year 1 this term! Here are some of our highlights:
- In English, we read and viewed stories told and written by First Nations Australians. We wrote our own retells our favourite being How the Birds Got their Colours. In addition to our retells, we made our own eBooks to share our thinking about the character Willy the Wimp. We shared our eBooks with our friends and practiced our speaking and listening skills.
- In Maths, we worked on our skip counting and developed our confidence representing two-digit numbers using different materials and representations. We practised giving and following directions to familiar locations and collected data around questions that we asked of our peers.
- We’ve enjoyed all our different specialists lesson. In PE, we’ve practised kicking and punting while in Dance we’ve performing movement sequences. In Italian, we’ve learnt the names of food and created our own picture dictionaries while in STEM we’ve investigated changes that occur in the sky and landscape.
- We’ve worked hard on developing our growth mindset and persevering to push through challenges.
- We were visited by the RACQ Streets Ahead Program where we learned about road safety.
- Our new playground opened! We absolutely love exploring this new space.
- We celebrated our love of reading with a fantastic Book Week parade. There were so many wonderful costumes on display.
- Our special loved ones visited for our Father’s Day Stay and Play.
- We cared for others by recognising Daffodil Day and enjoyed the wonderful Wandani Arts Fest.
- We got colourful with our Colour Explosion run!
Wow! What a term!
I hope all our families enjoy a wonderful two weeks of school holidays and I look forward to seeing everyone back ready and energised for Term 4!

Learning in Year 2
As Term 3 comes to an end, the whole Year 2 team feel so proud of our students. This week, our students are completing learning and assessment whilst enjoying some very special events such as Colour Explosion and Arts Fest. We ran the Colour Explosion course yesterday and all had a great time. Thank you for your sponsorship of your child as they ran the course. Money raised by our P&C go directly towards benefitting all the children at MHSS. We appreciate your care for our community. Speaking of the Colour Explosion, I have included some photos to share some of the fun with you.
Best wishes for a safe and happy September holiday from the whole Year 2 team. We hope you and your family get some rest. Remember to keep encouraging the love of reading in your child by reading together each day and providing lots of opportunities to read over the holidays. It doesn’t have to cost money – why not head to the library and borrow books, swap books with family friends, go for a walk and read environmental print, or maybe even write a story with your child for them to read over and over.
Take care and have a wonderful week

The great debate!
This week students have been enjoying the chance to work with their peers on their speaking and listening task. It has been great to see them work together to give and receive feedback to make their presentation clear, precise and entertaining. Each student took on a role within the performance considering the perspectives of the Lorax or Oncer-ler and then debated a range of ideas that could affect their local environment. It was lovely seeing all our students working together to help each other be the best speaker they could be! Well done all.
To all our Year 3 students and families, I wish you a very lovely holiday for the September break.
Have a great week

Ending the term with an explosion of fun!
What a fantastic way to end Term 3 with our Colour Explosion this week. Our Year 4 students had an amazing time running, ducking, weaving and getting colourful! Congratulations to everyone who raised money for this event.
Term 3 highlights
It’s been a busy but exciting term with students taking part in so many wonderful opportunities beyond our classroom learning including: RACQ Streets Ahead program, Bunyaville science excursion, Father’s Day afternoon, Arts Fest, Colour Run and the Buy Smart program to name just a few.
We look forward to more exciting opportunities coming our way in Term 4!
Term 3 learning
Our Year 4 students have worked so hard this term in all learning areas. I know the hard work has continued this week with final pieces of assessment being completed and opportunities given for students to share what they have learned. They have shown great pride in their work this term, with many stopping me when I come to visit to show off their work. Congratulations to all of our Year 4 students on a successful term.
Camp at Runaway Bay
Thank you to everyone has returned the required camp forms by the due date. A reminder to ensure all camp forms are returned by the relevant due dates. In particular, Form C, which was due last week should be returned as soon as possible.

Care for Learning in Years 5 and 6
Congratulations on a great Term 3. This week I have had the pleasure of celebrating the work of most of our classes. It was great observing 6V and their final learning of their Discounts unit. I loved how students participated in a Move and Prove and discussed their reasoning of how they attacked a multi-step problem. I also loved meeting with students from 5G who all wanted to show me their HASS diary recount of a person from the Gold Rush Era. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday and I look forward in seeing everyone in Term 4.
Year 6 Graduation
Than you to all of the parents who have been involved in the Graduation Committee so far this year and to all of the families who donated their time or money to help raise funds. Our next Graduation Committee meeting in on Wednesday the 5 October at 5pm. If you would like to attend please RSVP to Mrs Jasmine Benfer (jbenf10@eq.edu.au).
Transitions to secondary
There are many different types of transitions children will go through in their lifetime. As the end of Term 3 approaches, our Year 6 families start considering the transition from primary to high school in the near future!
Our Year 6 students spend time at local high schools in various transition programs. The first transition day for students enrolled at Mango Hill State Secondary College is Wednesday 14 September.
Our Inclusive Learning Team also work collaboratively with high schools to help prepare students for this transition. Change is a part of life and with change can come worry for some students. Some students may benefit from extra transition days, to become familiar with a new environment and allow time to meet with ILT staff at their new schools. This helps smooth the way for a successful move to a new school.
Here are some tips to help you support your child through this time of transition.
- Discuss the changes – different teachers, new subjects to try, meeting new friends.
- Talk about how some things will stay the same (some friends may be at new school).
- Be organised with uniforms and resources – have your child involved with the book list.
- Discuss a ‘go to’ place where students could get support in the first few weeks (e.g. unsure of timetable)
- Remind your child that all students are feeling a bit nervous.
- Speak positively and share the excitement about the new experiences to be had!

Deputy Principal –Year 5 & 6

Borrowing for the holidays
Don’t forget to pop on down to the Hub this week to make sure you have a book or two to read over the holidays. The Hub is open from 8.15am every morning and until 3pm every afternoon. See you soon!
Financial Mathematics
Next term, students will be exploring money and financial mathematics. Authentic learning experiences are used to engage students in mathematics and to give them an understanding of a whole range of mathematical concepts. It allows students to appreciate the relevance and usefulness of mathematics and develops students’ abilities to make informed judgements and effective consumer and financial decisions.
Over the holidays, using opportunities around the home to explore this concept will greatly support your children. See below for some wonderful ideas that were published in the Your Local Families Magazine!

Accelerated Reader
Congratulations to Eloise who this week reached 1 million words in AR. We are very proud of her commitment and dedication to reading and have added her photo to our special AR display in the Hub.
Congratulations also to Aadya who today reached 3 million words. This is an extraordinary achievement and we are so impressed!
Great work Eloise and Aadya!
Have a fantastic week

Activity Risk: Medium - Students will be playing a modified game of AFL (touch). Mouthguards are not compulsory for AFL training sessions, but are recommended.
Equipment/Uniform: No equipment is required but it is advisable for students to wear a change of clothes if they like. Students can also provide their own protective equipment (mouthguards) and can wear football boots (no metal tags), but again this is optional.
