Wandani Arts Fest
Two more sleeps until our Wandani Arts Fest evening event.
This is our first whole school gathering in quite some time and we’re really looking forward to it. Our Wandani Centre has been transformed into a real-life art gallery and it looks incredible. Each student in the school has created an individual art piece, displayed this week in our Wandani Centre art gallery. We are so proud of our artistic students and their wonderful creations.
Across this week, our students have been visiting the art gallery with their class. We’ve learned about how to interact with art pieces and how to respect the art gallery space. We know that we always walk in an art gallery, don’t ever touch the art (even if it’s ours!) and that we need to take time to reflect on the art pieces to really enjoy them.

On Friday night, we will hold two art auctions; one at 5.30 and one at 6.30. Each class has created a piece of artwork with their buddy class and we know that every student in the school wants their class artwork hanging on their wall at home! This is a student council fundraiser, to raise funds for our school. Our fabulous friends at Ray White, North Lakes provide us with real life auctioneers to set the auction pace. There will be other entertainment on our piazza stage across the night. Check out the program attached.
“Doors” open from 4.30 pm, with the official commencement at 5 pm. We anticipate the evening will end before 7.30 pm.
We have a range of activities for you to enjoy as a family, including the following.
-
Maker Space- free. Range of craft and construction activities and challenges.
-
STEM activities- free. Range of Science and Maths challenges.
-
Calico painting- free. Painting is free to participate and you can purchase tote bags later. We’re going to collaborate to paint large pieces of calico!(We still need enthusiastic sewers afterwards, who can turn our large, painted pieces of calico into tote bags, which we will sell from the café).
- Mandala Art- free. We’re going to decorate the paths with mandala. The mandala chalk art can be enjoyed by everyone for free!
- Henna Art- Donation. We have real henna and pretend henna available. We will have the ingredients for the henna listed on the sign at the activity and all students must be accompanied by their parents, for permission to engage in this activity. We have a significant amount of families in our school community who regularly use henna as an artform in their cultural celebrations. We do understand that some individuals may have skin sensitivities and allergies and we strongly suggest that you don’t participate if this applies to you. We’re asking for a donation towards our student council for the henna art.
- Story Telling- free. Times for the story telling in The Hub 5.45 pm, 6.15 pm, 6.45 pm.
- Caricatures- $25. We have an artist joining us! Wayne Fleming is a professional live cartoon and caricaturist. He will be in attendance and happy to capture portraits for you. Payment on the night for each drawing is $25.00. What a great way to remember this moment in time!
- The Dock- free. We always try to have a quiet space for our students and families who may be overwhelmed with all the noise and all the activity. Duck into The Dock for a break, if you need to.
**Please see the attached map, drawn by our artistic senior student Anaya, so you can find all of the activities!**
Food, Food, Food!
Thank you to everyone who has pre-ordered their pizzas. Delivery will be at 5.15 ish and you can collect your pizza from around that time.
If you haven’t pre-ordered a pizza but still need dinner, our Year 6 families are running a sausage sizzle and bake sale to raise money for the Year 6 graduation. Our P&C is opening the Sole Café to sell snacks and hot and cold drinks too.
And the most exciting part of the night…? The gelato cart! Our gelato selling friends will arrive before the end of the school day on Friday, so you can purchase gelato after school and at the Arts Fest. Two chances for gelato?!! Yes please!
See you all on Friday night.
Wakakirri Success!
Congratulations to our Wakakirri team on their performance last night at the Brisbane Awards evening at Logan Entertainment Centre. Outstanding teamwork and talent on display! After that fantastic performance the team were presented with the following awards.
Congratulations to all our performers and back stage crew. Special thanks to all the parents and staff who supported our students. Of course none of this is possible without the amazing Mrs Kostoglou and Ms Sheehan. We are so fortunate to have them!
Courtesy for neighbours and safety in the carpark
We are a large school surrounded by houses. May I ask that you show care and courtesy to our neighbours in the following ways.
- If parking in surrounding streets, please ensure you do not block their driveways or park on the grass on their footpath.
- If picking up from Mallard Street, please DO NOT arrive before 2.45pm. The queuing in Mallard Street for 15-20 minutes each afternoon before the bell even rings, causes congestion. Residents cannot access their homes.
- Keep your children safe by picking your child up from the Look Out Zones. Do not stop in the middle of the carpark and encourage your child to jump in. It is dangerous for students and blocks the traffic flow.
Thank you to the vast majority of parents who show safety and consideration for neighbours.
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday in care class lessons is ‘Building character through Commitment and Excellence’.
Commitment and excellence are an important part of building character in young people. Commitment is about persevering with a task or challenge until it is completed. Positive attitudes and positive habits develop the character traits of commitment and excellence. Excellence is the result of consistent work and commitment. Doing your very best us such an important way to demonstrate excellence.
You can encourage commitment and excellence at home by try some of the following.
- Maintaining strong relationships.
- Setting family goals and work towards them.
- Getting children involved in household chores.
- Playing sport or a musical.
- Offer regular challenges.
- Encouraging patience.

Art in Prep
We really hope you can come to our first arts fest evening event this Friday night. It will be a wonderful way to connect with other families and for our Preps to show you their incredible art pieces!
This term, we had an incursion from art experts Raw Art. The kinds of things they can help young students do is quite extraordinary! Each class chose a different type of art medium to explore, so across Prep you will see a range of clay sculptures, three dimensional collages and paintings.
Each class will visit the Wandani Centre this week, which has been transformed into an art gallery. We’re teaching our students how to engage and experience art, how to walk and behave at an art gallery, how to take our time and appreciate art pieces.
Your child will probably come home and tell you what they have seen, but if they don’t… make sure you ask!
And if you’d like to follow up this experience, the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) and the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) are always great places to adventure with children on school holidays. They are free! Air conditioned! And they always have children’s activities over the school holidays. We love to adventure to the QAG café outdoors area, where children can step across the stepping stones, enjoy the fountains and spot the bearded dragons.

Speaking and Listening
Often when we think about learning in English, we think of reading and writing. While these skills are important, when we teach English, we also focus on developing children’s knowledge, understanding and skills in listening and speaking.
This term our Year 1s have been listening and viewing the Willy the Wimp stories by Anthony Browne. These engaging stories have enabled the students to discuss how Willy the ape possesses some human like qualities. The students have been able to share their reflections by creating their own eBooks that include pictures and text to explain their thinking.
Over the last two weeks, the children have been presenting their eBooks in small groups and discussing their thinking with their peers. They have also had an opportunity to practise active listening by asking questions of the presenter and providing them with feedback.

Support Staff Week – Celebrating the Teacher Aides in Year 1
Did you know it is Support Staff Week? All week we are celebrating the contributions of our teacher aides, office staff, groundsmen, cleaners, IT technician and student wellbeing officer.
In Year 1 we are so lucky to be supported by a trio of wonderful teacher aides. Miss Tully, Miss Louise and Miss Rafaella do a terrific job assisting in our classrooms with learning and wellbeing. If you see these lovely ladies around the school this week, please thank them for their contribution.

Learning in Year 2
This week, students are demonstrating their understanding of multiplication and division in Math before we finish the term learning about Data. In many of our classrooms, students enjoy lessons where they are co-taught by two teachers. The co-teacher (with your child’s class teacher) can be another class teacher, one of our inclusion teachers or even one of our Heads of Department (Curriculum). We are also very engaged in the Arts of course, and every class will have a visit with their buddy class to view the Wandani Arts Fest pieces. Hope to see some of you on Friday afternoon for the Arts Fest Evening.
Stay and Play
Thank you to family and friends who were able to attend our Stay and Play last week. We had such fun! Check out these smiling faces …

Colour Explosion
We are looking forward to the Colour Explosion on Tuesday of Week 10. Please return your child’s consent form as soon as possible to your child’s class teacher if your child is participating.
Take care and have a wonderful week

Story Time with Julius
This term I have been super lucky to watch Julius craft an amazing next chapter of the story Kumiko and the Dragon. It has been great to see how motivated and excited he has been to improve his writing with each draft. Over the term Julius has worked really hard at applying the feedback from his peers and Mr Wong to conquer each of his learning goals. What an achievement, love that growth mindset!
Take a look at Julius’s wonderful final draft.

Have a great week

Talking about learning in Year 4
We may only have just over a week left at school for the term, but the hard work has not stopped. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in 4R for a Maths lesson this week, where students were consolidating their understanding of decimals through solving a range of problems in real-world contexts. Miss Reade challenged 4R to share their thinking with their classmates and to justify answers given. I heard and saw some excellent responses to challenging questions, with students using mathematical language to compare the sizes of decimal numbers represented in tenths and hundredths. Excellent work from our 4R mathematicians.
Developing Connections and a Growth Mindset
Last week, I shared an example of how one of our Year 4 classes recognises students showing a growth mindset. This happens regularly across all of our Year 4 classrooms, along with many other ways that our teachers work to develop strong connections within their class and set students up for success each day. Some examples include consistent morning routines, visual timetables and Circle Time lessons.

Have a super week

Care for Learning in Years 5 and 6
It is hard to believe it is Thursday of Week 9! A huge thank you to 6D this week who hosted me during their transformation Maths lesson. I loved seeing and hearing the collaboration between the students as they debated the responses to different problems. Research into educational outcomes indicates the power of debate in improving learning outcomes. It was great to see this in action. Thank you as well to all of the Year 5 classes who have taken the time to show me their shape poetry. I loved hearing the poems in 5P last week and the poems from 5I this week. I look forward in celebrating these before the end of the term. Well done Year 5 and 6!
Graduation Committee – Arts Fest
The Arts Fest is only a couple of days away – we are all very excited! Each year this forms our major fundraising event for our Year 6 Graduation. Thank you to everyone that has donated in some way to support our students. If you would like to support these are the ways in which you can do so.
- Sausage Sizzle: The Graduation Committee need some volunteers to cook and serve at the sausage sizzle. We need volunteers from 3:30 – 8pm. If you can volunteer for any time during this window please let Ms Jasmine Benfer (jbenf10@eq.edu.au) know and we will create a schedule.
- Bake Stall: Each year our families bake goods to be sold at the bake stall. Families bring in their baked goods on the afternoon of the Arts Fest and the Graduation Committee organises them to be sold on the night. If you would like to show off your baking skills all donations are welcome. We will also need people to volunteer at the stall from 4-7:30pm. If you can volunteer for any time during this window please let Ms Jasmine Benfer (jbenf10@eq.edu.au) know and we will create a schedule. If you can bake some goods – thank you – all you need to do is drop them off to the school on the afternoon of the 8th of September.
- Class Hampers: Each year our Year 6 classes create a class hamper that gets raffled off at the Arts Fest. Each class has a different theme and families donate goods that align to that theme – students can bring in the goods and drop them off in a basket already set up in their classroom. This year the following classes have the following themes.
- 6T – For Kids
- 6H – For Her
- 6D – Sweets
- 6R – Savoury
- 6W – For Him
- 6B – For Her
- 6V – For Him
- 6C – For Kids

Book Week Competition
Congratulations to all those who entered this year’s Book Week competition. We have loved watching lots of students visit the Hub to vote for their favourite entry. The top 11 entries, chosen by our Mango Hill students, have all received their prizes. A special class award went to 3W who entered lots of fabulous stories! Congratulations to Nishant, Tamanna, Lizzy, Gurnoor, Levi, Eva, Omika, Leam, Quinn, Lucy and Amelia.
Now that we have finalised voting, all entries can be collected from the Hub. While we will be sad to see them go, we are sure you will love to share them with your families. Well done everyone!
Borrowing over the holidays
Don’t forget to pop in soon to borrow a book or two for the holidays. The holidays are such a great time to be reading and enjoying books! The Hub is open from 8.15am every morning and until 3pm every afternoon. As part of Support Staff Week, don't forget to thank Mrs Franklin and Mrs Johnston for the fabulous job they do in caring for our books and our students. We look forward to seeing you soon!
