Term 4 Health Units
At Mango Hill State School we aim to create a safe, supportive and inclusive environment for all students and their families. Each year in Term 4, we teach sexuality education, respectful relationships and child safety in all year levels from Prep - Year 6. With the support of the P&C Association, class teachers teach the program guided by the resources in Catching On Early Program and the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety program as part of their health curriculum.
The parent information booklet outlines the content to be covered in the lessons in each year level and the resources used. This was emailed to all families last week. If you wish to receive a hard copy of the lessons, please let your child’s teacher know or collect from the office.
To ensure your child has consent to participate in these lessons, please complete the form sent home Wednesday (and attached below) and return to the class teacher by Friday 9 September. If you choose for your child not to participate in the program, they will work with another class during these lessons. If you have any questions or wish to further discuss the program, please don’t hesitate to contact the class teacher, Sector leader or myself.
We look forward to working in partnership with parents and carers to ensure all children have the knowledge to grow into healthy adults.
BYOx Link
The Department of Education has implemented a new Bring Your Own (BYO) device solution called “BYOxLink”, which has recently become available at MHSS.
Please note that if your child already has the ‘Comp Portal’ app (image below) downloaded, no further action is required.
What is it and why do I need to know about it?
“BYOxLink” enables students to use their privately-owned devices to access learning applications and shared network drives at our school. The benefits of connecting to “BYOxLink” to students are:
- All free apps on the school’s suggested app list can be accessed through a single app
- Students will experience less internet connectivity issues at school, allowing for less interruption of learning
- Apps become more reliable and will automatically update
- Student devices will automatically connect to other Department of Education wi-fi networks when visiting for competitions and/or excursions
- Connection is secure and safe.
As part of the transition your child’s device will need to install Intune Company Portal from the App store.
When do I need to complete the enrolment into Intune (device management platform supporting BYOxLink) for my child and how do I do it?
We are strongly encouraging ALL students with privately owned devices to enrol into Intune and connect to "BYOxLink".
There are two documents attached below to help you:
- Intune Getting your child's device ready for school (to be used to install Intune, downloading a profile to help connect students to the school Wi-Fi)
2. BYOxLink - Parent Fact Sheet (should you wish to know more information about Intune and "BYOxLink").
To complete the process, you will require your child’s school username and password. Your child should already have this information. If they do not, contact your child’s class teacher directly.

Student Free Day Friday
A reminder that this Friday 2 September is a student-free day!
Reading – Years 3 – 6
People often believe that learning to read only takes place within the first few years at school. Admittedly, by the time a child is in Year 2 or Year 3 there is a shift from ‘Learning to read’ to ‘Reading to Learn’ but that doesn’t mean a child stops ‘learning to read’.
In Years 3 – 6, students may now be reading chapter books with more complex storylines. Therefore, the focus now moves more towards teaching students how to decode longer (multisyllabic) words and how to gain meaning through the words that they read.
It is still important, even at this age, for you to listen to your child read at home. If your child comes across a word they don’t know how to read try the following.
- Chunk up their sounding out - this is done by sounding out each syllable, then blending these syllables together. For example: hel/i/cop/ter = helicopter.
- Prefixes/suffixes – looking at the different parts of the word that they may already know how to read. For example: recycle they may know how to read the word ‘cycle’ so then we add the prefix ‘re’ = recycle.
If your child comes across a word they don’t understand or they are not comprehending what they are reading, try the following.
- Origin of words (etymology) - looking at the different parts of the word and discussing what they mean. For example: aquarium = ‘aqua’ meaning water.
- Ask questions – after your child reads a section of the text, ask them some questions about what they have read. For example: Who are the characters? What has happened so far? What do you think will happen next? Why do you think the character reacted in that way?
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is “Learning from our mistakes”.
The Four Cares teach us that when I care for myself, I understand that it's okay to not know something yet. It doesn't mean I have failed at something … it just means I don't know it yet and now my job is to learn it. When I care for learning, I commit to working toward my learning even if there is a setback.
In fact, studies have found that learning is enhanced when children make mistakes! Whether it involves homework, developing friendships, or playing soccer, learning is enriched through error. Making mistakes is part of how kids are challenged to learn to do things differently. It motivates them to try new approaches.
The Countdown is on to… Wandani Arts Fest
“Doors” open from 4.30 pm on September 9, with the official commencement at 5 pm. We anticipate the evening will end before 7.30 pm.
Food available on the night!
- Our Year 6 families will run a bbq sausage sizzle and bake sale to raise funds for their graduation.
- Our P&C will open the café to sell hot and cold drinks, as well as snacks. Pizzas will also be for sale, $2 a slice or $15 for a whole pizza (eight slices).
- You can pre-order your pizzas through flexi-schools now. Pre-ordering guarantees your order, as there will be a very limited pizzas available for sale on the night. Pizza options: Hawaiian, Cheese, Vegetarian and Meat Lovers.
- Gelato cart
We really need parent support to make this event shine! You can help our P&C to sell food by clicking on this link: www.volunteersignup.org/MACF3
You won’t be left alone to run the business as we have three parents overseeing the food sales for the P&C.
You can also contribute to our Messy Maker Space! We’d love cereal boxes, muesli bar boxes etc (no egg cartons or milk cartons), as well as donations of masking tape. Wool and ribbon would also be welcomed. We’re collecting these items in our Stem Lab (behind The Hub).
We can’t wait to celebrate Wandani Arts Fest with you!

Lots of “firsts” this term for our Preps
Last week it was our first Book Week parade and didn’t we have some fun dressing up to celebrate books and reading!
This week is our first Father’s Day celebration where we celebrate all the special carers in our lives.
Next week is our first arts festival experience. We cannot wait to see the Wandani Centre transformed into an art gallery!
And the week after that is our first Colour Run!
Phew. No wonder we are a little bit tired.
As we experience all these “firsts” over the coming weeks, our Preps would like their carers to help them by...
- ensuring we get enough sleep. We might even need to go to bed earlier than usual.
- staying strong on the family device rules in the home and making sure our devices are switched off at least two hours before bedtime (helps us to sleep!)
- making sure we arrive at school on time each day so we don’t miss important connection time with our classmates in the morning
- talking about upcoming “firsts” in a low key way. Sometimes the grown ups can over sell things to us?
We hope to see all of our Prep families at Wandani Arts Fest on Friday 9 September.
PS: Just to add another “first” to our list; swimming lessons begin in Term 4 - have you paid and returned permission notes?

Enjoying our New Play Spaces
The Junior Playground has been a hive of activity over the last week. The children have been buzzing with excitement as they’ve explored this wonderful new play space. Our new playground now includes balance beams, a maze, a cubby, a mini amphitheatre, tables and chairs for sitting at, as well as a riverbed complete with two water pumps.
In the last week, the children have been learning the rules of the new playground by unpacking them with their classroom teachers. They’ve even visited this space with their class during class time to get to know this new area.
You can help your child follow the rules of our new play space by doing the following.
- Please continue to wait in the Junior Undercover Area in the mornings between 8:00 – 8:15am. The playground is unsupervised in the morning so no one can be playing there.
- Children using the playground need to move through it on the stepping stones. We have lots of lovely, new plants in this area that have been trampled on when children run through the garden. Lucas from 1O has been doing a wonderful job reminding the children to stick the stepping stone pathways so these new, little plants can grow.
- Our playground is a tiered playground with lots of different levels. To stay safe, children need to walk through this area and avoid jumping off the rocks.

Father’s Day Stay and Play
It was so lovely to spend time with loved ones at our Father’s Day Stay and Play afternoon. While the weather wasn’t on our side and we weren’t able to get outside, we still had lots of fun with activities in our classrooms. It was an afternoon playing with puzzles, reading, construction and craft. There were some pretty dapper looking loved ones leaving sporting new ties!
We hope all our loved ones enjoy their special on Sunday!

Learning in Year 2
Our Year 2 excursion to Samford Museum helped us learn about Humanities and Social Sciences. Many thanks to the parents who attended the excursion as volunteers to ensure that we were all safe and representing Team Mango proudly. We understand that work and other commitments may limit the times when parents are able to volunteer, so we acknowledge those who could support our students this time and we equally look forward to other opportunities.
It is such a pleasure to be in classrooms at this time of the term seeing the progress your children have made in their learning over the past seven or eight weeks. In 2B this week, students gave their peers feedback on their writing. I was so impressed by the articulate way in which students celebrated their peers’ achievement and gave a next step to improve the writing further.
Stay and Play
This afternoon, our Year 2 classes are hosting a Stay and Play from 1:45-2:15 pm. This Stay and Play is in recognition of Dads and the people who are just like dads to us. All of our classes are ready for our guests to “Stay and Play”. We hope to see as many of you as possible then.
Year 2 at play
We are enjoying the new play area in Year 2. Students are learning the expectations for play in this “new” area at first and second break. Before school, the expectation remains that students in Year 2 who arrive at school before 8:15 am will wait in the Junior Undercover Area (not in the playground).

Take care and have a wonderful week

Busy in Year 3!
We are working hard on our assessment pieces in Year 3. We’ve started our speaking and listening task.
We are getting excited about the Wandani Arts Fest and we can’t wait for the Wandani Centre to be transformed into an art gallery. We hope you can come to the family event on Friday September 9, to enjoy the activities with us.
Appreciating art is one way we can express ourselves, our personality and our individuality. Each one of us has an individual art piece on display that we are proud to show you! We have collaborated with our Buddy Class friends to create a class art piece for auction. We are eager to have these pieces in our homes!
Other upcoming events include the Fun Run in the last week of term. Swimming forms and payment are also due by the end of the term too.
As you can see, we’re working hard on our academic learning, as well as our cultural and sporting learning. We are super stars in Year 3.
Have a great week

Talking about learning in Year 4
This week I have visited lots of classrooms where teachers have been encouraging their students to talk about their learning. This has either been through collaborative learning, students sharing a ‘think-aloud’ about how they would solve a problem, or students presenting their work to their peers.
I love the confidence in which students at MHSS share their knowledge with others.
Showing a growth mindset
This term’s schoolwide focus has been on having a growth mindset. Everyday, I hear our teachers encouraging students to have a growth mindset and giving them the tools to achieve this. As the term has progressed, I have seen some great examples of students who have displayed a growth mindset, not only towards learning, but to a range of areas of their school lives. In many classrooms, teachers and students recognise those who have demonstrated a growth mindset at the end of each day.
This week I got to see Kaeden in 4R celebrating his growth mindset, by adding a mango to the class ‘growth mindset’ mango tree. Kaeden shared with his class how he showed a growth mindset that day by sharing his ideas with the class, even though he felt a bit nervous. Brilliant work, Kaeden!
Have a super week

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
It has been a pleasure visiting classes this week and observing the high impact teaching and learning occurring across our sector. I loved working with some enthusiastic mathematicians in 5R as they focussed on some multi-step word problems. Students were provided a “My Favourite Mistake” question to answer independently and then, in a collaborative structure, students discussed and defended their answer and the way in which they solved the problem. It was great hearing students talk about their thinking. In Year 5 English our students are beginning their Speaking and Listening task which is focussed on poetry. I loved visiting 5P and listening to students talk about the choices they made in creating their poems.

Finally in 6T this week students continued to consolidate their understanding of percentage discounts through engaging in some guided instruction work with Mrs Thomas and then breaking off into a rally coach and discuss and defend learning activities. Great work Year 5 and 6!

Graduation Committee – Arts Fest
The Arts Fest is fast approaching. Each year this forms our major fundraising event for our Year 6 Graduation. Thank you to everyone that has donated in some way to support our students. If you would like to support these are the ways in which you can do so.
- Sausage Sizzle: The Graduation Committee need some volunteers to cook and serve at the sausage sizzle. We need volunteers from 3:30 – 8pm. If you can volunteer for any time during this window please let Ms Jasmine Benfer (jbenf10@eq.edu.au) know and we will create a schedule.
- Bake Stall: Each year our families bake goods to be sold at the bake stall. Families bring in their baked goods on the afternoon of the Arts Fest and the Graduation Committee organises them to be sold on the night. If you would like to show off your baking skills all donations are welcome. We will also need people to volunteer at the stall from 4-7:30pm. If you can volunteer for any time during this window please let Ms Jasmine Benfer (jbenf10@eq.edu.au) know and we will create a schedule. If you can bake some goods – thank you – all you need to do is drop them off to the school on the afternoon of the 8th of September.
- Class Hampers: Each year our Year 6 classes create a class hamper that gets raffled off at the Arts Fest. Each class has a different theme and families donate goods that align to that theme – students can bring in the goods and drop them off in a basket already set up in their classroom. This year the following classes have the following themes.
- 6T – For Kids
- 6H – For Her
- 6D – Sweets
- 6R – Savoury
- 6W – For Him
- 6B – For Her
- 6V – For Him
- 6C – For Kids
Thank you for your kindness in volunteering your time, baking skills or goods for the hampers. I know our students appreciate your generosity. They will have a great time at their Year 6 Graduation.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
The 2022 PRC has now closed. All completed forms should have been handed into Class teachers or directly to the Hub. Thank you to everyone who participated and celebrated the joy of reading. We will submit our forms and should hear back from the Premier’s office early in Term 4. In the meantime, even though you’ve finished the PRC, don’t forget to keeping reading!
Scholastic Book Fair
Special thanks to all of the families who generously supported our Book Fair last week. There was as much excitement as a yearly stock-taking sale and some students came every day! I do hope that everyone is enjoying their brand new books. Due to the total of sales at the Book Fair, our Hub is able to choose $2000 worth of free books from Scholastic. This is a fabulous outcome and we look forward to choosing and processing lots of new books in the coming months.
Book Week Competition entries
We had a couple of last minute entries, so our fabulous Book Week competition entries will be on display for another week. Pop on down to have a look and vote for your favourite entry – there are so many to choose from!

Speaking and Listening
One of the important components of our English program at MHSS is Speaking and Listening. At this time of the term, all of our students from Prep to Year 6 are involved in learning about and developing their skills related to a specific Speaking and Listening task. For example, in Year 1 students will discuss with a small group how the character Willy (from the books ‘Willy the Wimp’ and ‘Willy the Champ’) is like humans. In Year 3 students will use some of the ideas from ‘The Lorax’ to engage in an informal debate. In Year 6 students will perform and respond to some Slam Poetry.
All of these tasks require students to be an active listener and to share their ideas to an audience. The audience might be a small group or the whole class, but this task will require students to think about how they project their voice and how they use their body language to communicate. These skills are not only useful for the current tasks, but also for life. Think about how often we use our voices to communicate ideas, interests, needs and worries with others. Where would we be if others didn’t understand how we were communicating?
While students are focussing on Speaking and Listening, it is a great time to practise some of these skills at home. Maybe you could have a family discussion about a popular topic, or encourage some debating about TV viewing or holiday activities? Wouldn’t it be great to present a story or a poem to dad for Father’s Day? Don’t forget to also practise listening… after all we have 2 ears and 1 mouth for a reason!
Have a fantastic week
