Report Cards Distributed
On Monday all families should have received their child’s report card via email. If you did not receive this, please check your junk folder. If still not found, please contact the office for assistance.
Teachers rate student achievement against the Australian Standards. Students complete various assessment tasks which are then moderated with other classes within the school and also with other local state primary schools.
It is important to remember that the "Working with" rating (for Prep students), "Sound" rating (for Year 1-Year 2) and the "C" rating (for Year 3-6) are what most students can expect. This means they are achieving at year level expectation against the National Standard.
Please take the time to read this report and contact your child’s teacher if you wish to discuss further.
Welcome Prep 2021 Students!
Last week we started the 2021 Prep interviews. It is exciting to meet the many new students and learn more about them and their families. Students engaged in a range of play-based tasks while their parent spent time talking with Deputy Principal Mrs White and learning more about our school and what happens in prep. If you have a child due to start school next year (turning 5 before 30 June 2021), please contact the office for an enrolment pack and to arrange an interview.
Pictured below are some of the children at their interviews.

Public Holiday and Student Free Day this Term
A reminder that next Monday is the show holiday in our region so school will be closed.
Please also note that Friday 4 September is a student free day for all state schools in Queensland. This day has been changed from October to align with the new ATAR system.
Have a wonderful week

Focus of the Week
The focus introduced on Friday was ‘Mindfulness’. This topic will be revisited each day throughout Week 4. Being mindful might be concentrating on the activity at hand. Any activity can be done with a sense of mindfulness, even eating dinner with your family. For example, you can teach your child to pay attention to the texture and flavors of the food. You can guide them to think about how the food nurtures their body and keeps their body healthy. It could be a mindful activity that takes less than a minute to calm the mind before making a decision or reacting to a problem. Here are some mindful minute activities that you can try with your family.
Working Together in the Playground
Last week was a bit bumpy during playtime for our Prep students. We had forgotten all our wonderful ways to share and be kind to each other. We were grumpy and cross with each other and not showing our skills of patience and manners. So this week, we are going to turn it around!
We will play in our class groups, rotating around the playground each break. For example, Prep S might play in the sandpit at first break and then on the grassed area at second break. We will have a Kindness focus. Lots of golden tickets! Lots of praise! Lots of focusing on all the good things our Prep students do! At the beginning and end of each break, each Prep class teacher will speak with their students about what they might play and how they can be kind members of their Prep Class Team.
You can help to support us, by talking about kindness at home. How did your Prep child show kindness at break time today?
Another thing that Ms White is going to do, is bring out her blue tooth speaker. It seems like she’s not the only one who likes Story Bots! She discovered a whole crowd of children today who love the Story Bots dinosaur rap songs (they really are very cool, if you want an “ear worm”… google it).
We hope your child will come home speaking positively about the playground this week.

Have a lovely week

How can Students Improve Their Learning?
To support our Year 1 and 2 students to understand how they can improve their learning, we ask them two of our Learning Walks and Talks questions: ‘How can you improve?’ and ‘Where can you go for help with your learning?’
Setting goals is so important for our little ones to know how to improve their work. Teacher feedback is of course important and while the teachers strive to provide feedback individually, we also use Bump it Up strategies to model to the class or a small group how to improve their work. Teachers sometimes use a piece of student work with the class and they work out how to Bump it Up. The students and the teacher look at the success criteria on the scale and add detail to the piece of work to bump it up to the next star on the scale. They then add this to their Learning Wall or Bump it Up wall for the students to access when they are completing their own work. Learning Walls have vocab, phrases or number work that the students and teacher have co-constructed and are useful as a reference when they are doing further work.
The year 1 and 2 students are making great use of the supports in their rooms and are learning how to improve their work using the very visible success criteria on the scales.

Have a good week

Fractions, Fractions, Fractions!
This Term in Year 4 we have been building on our knowledge and understanding of fractions. We have worked collaboratively to locate familiar and mixed fractions on a number line. Not only have we identified where they belong on the number line but we have also converted the mixed fractions to improper fractions. In Ms Cosmo's and Miss Curran's class they have also looked at how fractions look when sharing out pieces of fruit. It helps us to learn when we get to represent and explore using concrete materials. We also get to share our thinking using mathematical language to explain our responses.
Keep exploring fractions at home by cooking with your child. A great way to put their new learning into real world action!

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
This week I had the opportunity to work with some great learners in Year 5 and 6. In Year 6 I worked with some students as they collaboratively deconstructed difficult advertisements. They worked together to analyse the different techniques used by marketers including persuasive devices, images and high modality language. One student told me the purpose of their class learning is to ensure “advertisers did not trick us in the future”. In 5P, I was fortunate to read some great narrative writing from students following their reading of the Man from Ironbark. While in 5D I had some great learning conversations with students who were able to talk to me about the differences in 3 and 4 star maths work. Great job Year 5 and 6!

Year 6 Graduation
Last week I sent all Year 6 families a link to a survey for Graduation. The aim of the survey is to ensure that the Graduation Committee hosts an event that is a fitting celebration for our Year 6 cohort while also been affordable for our community. If you have not completed the survey, and wish to, please complete via this link, https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5XZYLHR, by the end of this week
Have a great week

Instrumental Music
It has been wonderful to hear the music coming from the studio early on Wednesday and Thursday morning in Term 3. Mrs Bogdan and Mr James have been busy rehearsing the Senior Strings and Concert Band and ensuring Mango Hill students have an opportunity to return to ensemble performance. They were all engaged in the pieces they were learning and very keen to ‘get it right’.
I spoke with a number of the students about being back as a group and the following was the response from or Vice Performing Arts Captain:
“Having the Senior Band and Senior String Ensemble back on in Term 3 has been great. It has been sad to miss out on playing together as a group of students. Our teachers have made sure we are super safe by keeping us a distance apart and this means we still have the best time making music”.-Evilaa (Year 6)
