Facilities Upgrades
I am excited to update you on our progress with our improvements to facilities.
- Our new building with 24 classrooms is complete! It is so exciting to see the Year 5 & 6 students settled into their new facilities.
- Our multi-purpose court is nearly complete. It will be opened up to students within the next few weeks.
- Our new mini soccer field and senior playground is starting to take shape. We expect this to be ready in time for Term 4.
- Our junior playground is currently progressing well with major earthworks underway to re-shape the area and sandstone blocks utilised to create different areas. We expect this area to be finished ready for Term 4.
- Our pathway running parallel with the front carpark connecting the Bonnet Parade park to Kinsellas Road will start to take shape later this term and be ready in time for the 2023 school year.
We are so fortunate to have so many improvements happening for our students to learn in world-class facilities!

Tea Towel Fundraiser
Check out the gorgeous tea towels pictured below that the P & C are selling! All students enrolled in our school prior to the last holidays, drew a picture of themselves to be included. Each year level now have a tea towel with all those images as a memento of the 2022 school year.
These tea towels cost $15 or three for $40. All purchasing will be through QKR. Please find information below on the QKR App.
Once you download the app and find our school, please click on Tea Towel fundraiser to order and pay. If you want to take advantage of the bulk deal of three tea towels for $40, please click on the Bulk Purchase option. In this section you can order three tea towels of the same year level or three tea towels of three different year levels. What a wonderful memento to keep forever or to give as a gift for grandparents or other loved ones! Orders close on Friday 5 August so don’t delay!
School Opinion Survey
Thank you to all of those who have already completed the Parent/Caregiver Survey. If you have not had a chance to complete the survey yet, please note that the online surveys will remain open until Friday, 12 August 2022. This is your opportunity to provide feedback about what our school does well and how we can improve.
To have your say, check your email for an invitation from the Department of Education titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022.
Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.
Consideration of neighbours
Please be mindful of our neighbours at the back of the school if you are picking your children up at the Mallard St pick up zone. We have noticed parents arriving quite early and queuing in this area for 20-30 minutes which really blocks the streets and is totally unnecessary. We strongly encourage you not to start queuing until close to 2.45. At this stage, we are able to get all students loaded in this area between 2.50-3.00 so there is really no need to waste 30 minutes queuing and it does impact on the residents in the area who are having difficulty accessing their houses. Thanks for your support.
Changes to OSHC
As you may be aware, we recently underwent a tender process for the continued operation of the OSHC service at our school. The outcome of this process is that PCYC were awarded the tender moving forward. Whilst we are sad to finish our partnership with Helping Hands, we are excited by the new partnership with PCYC and the wonderful advantages this organisation offers for our students.
I wish to assure you that Helping Hands will continue to offer their great service for the rest of this term. Further communication will be provided shortly regarding the transition process and there will be an opportunity for families to meet the wonderful team from PCYC.
Behaviour and Wellbeing
At our school our teachers implement a common set of Behaviour and Wellbeing actions to support student success at school and promote student wellbeing. This includes Circle Time, Ready to Learn plans, Care Class, Greeting Circle and so on. Our Leadership team enjoy spending time in classrooms hearing from students about their learning and practices in Behaviour and Wellbeing.
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Managing our Big Feelings”.
We care for self and care for others by managing our big feelings. Managing our big feelings can also help us care for our learning. Sometimes we have big feelings which are hard to manage. It is important to use our strategies to help us to recognise, control and manage our feelings and learn how to self- regulate.
“To Manage our Big Feelings” we need to remember the following.
- It is never ok to hurt someone.
- Recognise the feeling in my body.
- Know and use a strategy that helps me.
- Use words to say how I feel and what I wish would happen.
- Ask for help.
- Take time to calm and understand when you are Centred and Ready to Learn.
The Moreton Bay Regional Council Local Law No.5 (Parking) 2011 and Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1999 controls parking or stopping of vehicles on footpaths, bicycle paths, marked yellow lines, shared paths, dividing strips and nature strips, along with vehicles parking across residents driveways and within ‘No Stopping’, ‘No Parking’, and ‘Bus Zones’ and Pick-up / Drop -off zones. Council is legally required to enforce these areas and the School Parking Patrol Program forms part of this process. Drivers are reminded that footpaths and nature strips are in place to promote pedestrian movement in a safe manner along roadsides and that drivers and residents must not stop on a bicycle path, shared path, dividing strip or nature strip. Please also note that vehicles that are parked with two wheels up and two wheels down is not considered as a lawful parking practice.
Local Laws officers conduct enforcement through the issuance of Penalty Infringement Notices as part of each School Parking Patrol. Please be aware that Council officers may take photographic evidence of vehicles stopping or parking illegally with Penalty Infringement Notices to be issued via mail at a later date to the offending vehicle’s owner.
Visit www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/parking for further guidance on parking restrictions.
For any further information, members of the School community are welcome to contact Moreton Bay Regional Council on 3205 0555.
Prep learning in Term 3
Our Preps have been hard at work again this week, jumping straight back in to focusing on learning.
Some things that our teachers use to help our students focus are the following.
- Movement breaks – students are given the opportunity for some physical activity and a chance to refresh before moving on to a new task.
- A big task takes a lot of concentration, so we often divide up a big task into smaller tasks. This can be applied to other things like getting ready in the morning and doing homework. One step at a time!
- Set a timer for completing a goal.
- Playing games that require focus, planning and the use of memory. Connect 4 and jigsaw puzzles are good options to play at home.
- Sticking to a routine - doing the same thing at the same time each day eventually turns in to a habit.
Vision Screening
Visions screeners are happening here on Monday, 15 August 2022. Good vision is vital for good learning. The screeners are free for our Preps to access. Make sure you take the opportunity and give permission for your child to participate. The online permission form remains open until Saturday 6 August 2022. The service is FREE to all children enrolled in Prep.
If you would like your child’s vision screened, please complete the Online Consent Form at: https://visionscreening.health.qld.gov.au/ParentalConsent/0102NNDM .
Alternatively, scan the QR Code below to also complete the form online:

Exploring Number Sequences in Year 1
Our Year 1s are doing a wonderful job exploring number sequences in Maths. They are doing lots of skip counting in 2s, 5s and 10s both forwards and backwards as well as creating their own number patterns starting from different numbers.
There are lots of ways you can help your child develop their confidence with skip counting.
- Practise counting aloud in 2s, 5s and 10s both forwards and backwards from 100. Start at different numbers not just from 2, 5 and 10.
- Have your child count every day items counting them in 2s (e.g. socks, shoes, eyes, knives and forks), 5s (e.g. fingers, toes) and 10s (e.g. Lego blocks, pegs).
- Count coins and notes of the same denomination (e.g. Count amounts made with $2 coins or $5 notes etc.).
Look at the children from 1C exploring counting in 3s using paddle pop sticks.

Growth Mindset
This term our classes will be focusing on teaching about growth mindset and acknowledging students who demonstrate resilience when faced with difficulties.
Look at 1O who met up with their Year 6 buddies to explore what having a growth mindset means. They created brain flowers that showed phrases you might say if you are displaying a growth mindset. Such a great reminder for what things we can say to ourselves when the going gets tough!

Learning in Year 2
This term our students have really made an amazing start to their writing, describing a place. Students examined an exemplar to understand what makes a great description. They are learning to add some details about what they can see, hear and do at the place and include an overall feeling. Students choose their words and language carefully to create a mood in their writing too, and they are learning to use a range of sentence beginnings and include compound sentences.
Next time you are out with your child, maybe at the park or the library, I wonder if your child could describe that place to you.

Growth Mindset
This term, our whole school theme is Growth Mindset. When you have a growth mindset, you believe that with effort and commitment you will be able to develop your talents and abilities. We see these people staying the course and persisting in their learning (or other areas). Ideally, people with growth mindsets understand that the same applies to all people – that with effort and commitment everyone can develop towards their potential. When we think like this, we can see that errors and setbacks are teachable moments for ourselves and others. If you want to know more and you love to read, you might be interested in “Mindset” by Carol Dweck or “Grit” by Angela Duckworth.
Year 2 Award Ceremony
Congratulations to all Year 2 students who received an award at our Year 2 Awards Ceremony today. How fabulous for those students to enjoy the acknowledgement of the peers on all their special efforts. It was wonderful to have so many parents and friends attend too. I encourage every Year 2 student to strive for an award this semester.
Take care and have a wonderful week

Growth Mindset
This term our care focus is all about a growth mindset and believing in yourself. Even when things are a bit difficult or you feel stuck, a growth mindset is about using the right strategies and giving it your very best go, not giving up. It does take practice and time to get better at something, but we know that when we demonstrate a growth mindset anything is possible! Over the next few weeks we will be learning about how we can build our growth mindset toolkit to help us be successful. We will learn about what a growth mindset is and some prompts to help us learn and practise positive thinking when we come across challenging experiences.
You can help at home by modelling a growth mindset in times when you feel stuck or challenged. For example, you could demonstrate resilience, use a positive outlook and a ‘give it my best go’ attitude. Use mistakes and failures as a teachable moment and include the power of ‘yet’ to how you face challenges. I don’t have it yet, but with a bit more practice I will get better.

PCYC Bike Safety Program
This week, some of our Year 3 classes have had their turn to take part in the PCYC Bike Safety Program. It is such a great learning experience, and it provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn all the skills they need to be safe on their bikes. The rest of the year level will have their turn soon, and we are sure that they will have tons of fun and learn a lot too!
Have a great week

Care for Learning in Year 4
This term in Maths, Year 4 are learning all about fractions! I have been so impressed by the level of engagement and enthusiasm from our students while visiting classrooms this week. I have seen students representing fractions in different ways including on a number line and using diagrams, with some students even being challenged to convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers! What a talented group of mathematicians we have in Year 4!
In Science, our Year 4 scientists are learning about erosion and the impacts of this on the environment. Our students are very excited about their upcoming excursion to Bunyaville, where they will get to see examples of erosion, amongst other things. As a part of their exploration of erosion, some classes have set-up an investigation over the past week looking at soil layers.

Awards Ceremony
This Thursday is our Year 4 awards ceremony, recognising student effort and achievement from Semester 1. The ceremony will be in Gigum Hall from 8.40am. Students are encouraged to be in full formal uniform for the event. I look forward to celebrating a successful Semester One with everyone.
RACQ Streets Ahead program
Over the past week, our Year 4 students have participated in the RACQ Streets Ahead program. The sessions were a highly engaging way to teach students about road safety. I encourage you to ask your children something new that they learned from this program.
Have a super week

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
Thank you to all of the Year 5 and 6 classes that invited me into their classrooms this week to observe their great work. I had the pleasure of working with 5R this week as they participated in a Rate the Response activity in which they collaborated on a variety of number patterns and responses to find the most accurate. By engaging in discourse and debate students were able to make conjectures, link prior knowledge to current understanding, reason about mathematics, refine and amend their approaches, and take ownership of their mathematical knowledge. It was great to see the engagement of 5R. While in 5L it was great to observe the coming together of the class’ Bump-It-Up-Wall. This tool within the classroom allows students to develop clarity of success in writing. By including student samples on the wall the students in 5I could really track how they were progressing. Well done 5R and 5I!

Year 6 Camp - Week 1
It was a pleasure visiting our Year 6 campers as they enjoyed their week at Tallebudgera. This week 6C, 6V, 6R and 6D attended camp with 6W, 6H, 6B and 6T attending next week. It was a pleasure seeing the smiling faces of our students as they made connections with their peers and continued to develop skills that will serve them well as they commence secondary schooling. While I was there I watched students engage in surfing, tobogganing and mastermind activities.

Year 6 Graduation Committee
Thank you to the parents who joined me last week as part of the Graduation Committee. Our next meeting will be at 4:30 on Wednesday the 27th of July in the Administration Block.
Martin Winney
Deputy Principal – Year 5 & 6

As part of our implementation of the national Health and Physical Education syllabus, all students will investigate Health topics in Term 3. For example in Prep students will explore some healthy food options, and in Year 1 and 2 students will discuss and share ways to make healthy choices at school and at home. In Year 3 students are learning about the value of physical activity and further developing their bike riding skills! In Year 4 students will apply their learnings about food plans when deciding how to help an imaginary MH students, while in Year 5 students will explore a range of issues related to their own identity. In Year 6 students will examine drink labels and consider how these choices influence their health.
We look forward to seeing our students’ understandings develop in this important area of the curriculum. At home, you might like to discuss the choices we all make on a daily basis that affect our health too!
Book Week Competition
Term 3 is an especially exciting one for all those who love to read! This term we will have a Book Fair here in the Mango Hill Hub and we will hold a range of special events for Book Week. To celebrate all things books we will also hold a special Book Week Competition. Attached is some further information about the Book Week Competition. We would love everyone to enter and look forward to displaying all of the entries in the Hub in the coming weeks. Pop on down to the Hub to talk about your ideas, see the fabulous prizes or to submit your entry!
The Hub is open every day from 8.15am and every afternoon until 3pm. See you soon!
Premier's Reading Challenge
Don’t forget that time is running out to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge. All completed forms should be returned to the Hub before the end of August…. Just a few weeks so keep reading, reading and reading! Students might also like to enter the QSuper competition to win an author’s visit for our school. See below for details.
https://qsuper.qld.gov.au/campaign/premiers-reading-challenge
Accelerated Reader
The beginning of a term is a great time to set some new AR goals… Will you work hard to reach a new level or read lots of new books? For some of our AR readers, a goal of a million words is something to strive towards.
At the end of last term Rocco reached his goal of 1 million words. This is a fabulous effort from Rocco, after reading consistently all year. This term we are also celebrating with Aadya and Amaan who both reached their goal of 2 million words. It is great to see these students applying themselves to reading and successfully completing their AR quizzes!
Congratulations also to Avery who during the holidays reached 4 million words! This is an extraordinary effort and demonstrates commitment to reading across the whole year. We can’t wait to see how many words Avery will read by the end of the school year!
We are very proud of all of our AR Millionaires and have added photos of Avery, Aadya, Amaan and Rocco to our special 2022 display. Congratulations!

Hub display
This week in the Hub we have a special display focussing on how technology has changed the ways we communicate. Pop on down and have a look at some ‘old fashioned’ phones and even a record. Does anyone in your family remember what it was like to use a flip-phone or a cassette player?
Have a fantastic week
