Welcome to Term 3!
It is fabulous to see our students returning this week with such enthusiasm for learning. A special welcome to our many new families who have joined our school community.
In 2022 we have been focussed on improving in two key areas
- Connection with students and families to improve wellbeing and behaviour.
- Clarity of the curriculum and teaching so that students know HOW to succeed
We are focussing on what teachers do, their pedagogy and practices so we deepen student understanding and skills by using clever teaching choices!
This week I have seen some wonderful examples of staff members connecting with students to build quality relationships and ensure we think about the function or motivation of inappropriate student behaviour so we can respond in the best way. We want students to have their needs met in a safe, socially acceptable way. It is also wonderful to see students connecting with one another whilst playing and learning. We look forward to further work in Semester 2.

Report cards
Parents will receive their child’s Semester 1 report card today. Teachers rate student achievement against the Australian Curriculum Achievement Standard. Students complete various assessment tasks which are then moderated with other classes within the school and also with other state primary schools.
It is important to remember that the "Working with" rating (for Prep students), "Sound" rating (for Year 1-Year 2) and the "C" rating (for Year 3-6) are what most students can expect. This means they are achieving at year level expectation against the National Standard.
Please take the time to read this report and contact your child’s teacher if you wish to discuss further.
School Opinion Survey
The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted in Term 3 and will close on 12 August 2022. All families, school staff and students in year 5 & 6 will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 11 July. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
Parents/caregivers who do not have access to the internet at home are welcome to complete their survey online at the school. School computers/tablets will be available.
Awards Ceremonies
Over the next two weeks we have the Year 1-6 Award Ceremonies. We look forward to celebrating with students who meet criteria for an award. If your child is receiving an award, you should have received an email from their class teacher, PE teacher, Deputy Principal or myself. All parents are welcome to attend. The ceremonies will be held in the Gigum Hall. We hope to see you there!
Consideration of neighbours
I would like to remind you that we have neighbours and ask that you do not start queuing for pick up zones before the bell. This creates a barrier for local residents trying to access their homes.
Road Safety
We always prioritise student safety each and every day at our school. For this reason, we are hosting the RACQ Streets Ahead program this week and next Monday for our students in Prep to Year 4. This program focuses on how students can stay safe around roads. There is no cost for the program. I include some photos of 2B enjoying their session and learning lots!

A gentle reminder that students may not wait in the car park for pick up by their parent. Sometimes, a student will say that their parent has told them to wait in the car park. This is unsafe for your child and for everyone else who is using the car park. Please help keep all our children safe!
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Growth Mindset’. We will also be consolidating this focus throughout next week.
Students develop a Growth Mindset by believing their skills and qualities can be improved through dedication and hard work. This includes:
- Giving something new a go
- Trying new games and activities
- Creating a love for learning and accomplishment in different areas of life
- Set learning goals striving to achieve them
- Asking questions and for help when needed to extend understanding
- Receiving feedback positively. Thinking I can always learn improve
- Taking pride in work by doing their very best
- Being resilient when a task is new or challenging.
Below is a section for our Learning Behaviour Chart displayed in all classrooms at Mango Hill.
Welcome Back Prep
Welcome to Term 3! While Ms White is on leave for the first two weeks of this term, I have the privilege of acting as Deputy Principal for the Prep Sector.
It was wonderful to see our Prep students return in full school uniform and ready to learn! I loved reading about all of the different holiday adventures and I was impressed with many of the students remembering to use finger spaces, full stops, capital letters, sight words and aiming to include at least 3 events and their feelings! This term in Prep, we will be building on our writing skills. To piece ideas together in our writing, we need to be able to talk about our ideas orally first. You can help with this at home. Talk about the books when you read them at home: “I laughed because the cat spilt his milk over the floor” and “I love this book because the cat is clumsy when he is walking around the house”. The focus is that our writing can communicate our ideas.
We are very proud of how far our Preps have come over the last semester and we are so excited to keep learning and growing with them. Next week, we start welcoming our 2023 Prep students for their enrolment interviews. We will conduct these interviews on a range of days across this term. If you know of families who live within our catchment, are yet to enrol, please encourage them to collect an enrolment pack from Kerry, our Enrolments Officer, as soon as possible!

Have a lovely week

Report Cards and Growth Mindset
Report cards were emailed home today. They provide a great talking point for families to discuss with their children their strengths and celebrations as well as next steps. Report cards also provide a great opportunity to talk about effort and applying a growth mindset to new challenges and new learning.
Change in Term 3 PE Unit
Unfortunately, the opening of our new multi-purpose court has been delayed slightly. This area is needed for the PE Team to run their proposed Term 3 unit consisting of scooters and scooter-boards. Therefore, the scooters and scooter-boards unit will now be run in Term 4 as instead of in Term 3.
In Term 3 for Physical Education, students will now develop their object control skills while completing kicking and punting activities. Students will experiment with using different equipment and parts of their body. They will propose a range of alternatives and test their effectiveness when solving movement challenges (i.e. hitting a target).
Learning in Year 2
We have enjoyed our wonderful first few days back at school for Term 3. I have included a few photos from our smooth start for you below. We are very focused on writing descriptions in Englishalready!

Award Ceremony in Year 2
We look forward to celebrating some Semester 1 achievements on Wednesday 20 July at our Year 2 Awards Ceremony. If your child is receiving an award, your child’s class teacher will have advised you. All parents are welcome to attend.
Playground
We all love checking out the Junior playground each morning as it changes each day due to the efforts (and machinery) of the builders. I have included a couple of photos for you, so you can see our new playground taking shape too.

Welcome to Term 3
Welcome back! It has been a busy start to our first week as our students jumped straight into what we are learning this term and why? They were very excited to find out that they were going to be taking on the role of an author to construct the next chapter of Kumiko and the Dragon. To help them become a great author it was really important that they knew what a good writer needed to include to engage the reader. So our year 3’s had a go at constructing their own scales and rating the response of a writing piece to see what a 4 star writer looks like and sounds like. I am super excited to see their progress as the term goes on and how they demonstrate a growth mindset as they get there.
Term 3 Lunch Time Clubs
Before the holidays I spent some time with our students and teachers brainstorming what clubs and activities they would like to take part in at lunchtimes during Term 3. They came up with many great ideas and our teachers have stepped up to host some of their favourites! Over the next few weeks our students will have the opportunity to take part in activities such as Lego, skipping, toy cars, games factory and Beyblades to name a few. We are super excited to include their ideas into our club timetable. To support our lunchtime clubs program we are seeking any possible donations from our families and the community. If you have any of the following items and are willing to gift them to our lunchtime clubs we would be very grateful!
- Lego
- Matchbox cars/toy cars
- Board games
- Beyblades/ Beyblade stadiums
Any donations can be handed into the office and we will distribute to the relevant teachers ready for play!
Have a great week

Getting ready for a big Term 3!
Welcome back to Term 3! It has been fantastic returning to school and seeing our Year 4 students happy and excited to be back with their class. Teachers have taken the time to reset expectations for the coming term and to promote our Term 3 theme – Growth Mindset. No time has been wasted, with all classes diving straight into the learning for Semester Two.
This term we have a number of events to look forward to, including:
- The RACQ Streets ahead program (Week 1 and 2)
- Year 4 Awards parade (Week 2)
- Bunyaville science excursion (Week 4 and 6)
- Book Week (Week 7)
- Arts Fest (Week 9)
- Colour Explosion (Week 10)
In between all of this, there will be lots of exciting learning happening. I can’t wait to continue to share and celebrate the progress of our students throughout the term!
Report Cards and Awards
This afternoon you will receive your child’s report cards. It was pleasing to see some outstanding results in both effort and achievement across the Year 4 cohort, in what has been a very challenging Semester One. I am looking forward to acknowledging this great work at our awards ceremony next Thursday!
Uniform
A friendly reminder about uniforms as we return to school. We encourage all of our students to wear the Mango Hill State School uniform correctly and with pride every day. This includes wearing all black shoes, plain white socks and the MHSS jumper/jacket during the colder weather. It is important that students also have a MHSS bag, or a plain black or navy bag as an alternative. Thank you for your support in helping our students to uphold the uniform expectations.

Have a super week

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
It has been really exciting walking through all of the Year 5 and 6 classrooms this week to observe the engagement of students as they returned to school. It helps having a brand new wonderful building for our students to connect and learn in. All of our students have demonstrated great care for their new learning space by co-constructing their classroom with their teacher to ensure it meets the needs of all members of their class. As I worked with classes this week what struck me was the sense of urgency students had in their drive to develop an understanding of what success looks like in their writing and maths units. I had the opportunity to observe 5R collaboratively deconstruct parts of their writing scale, hunt for the discernible differences and then find these differences in exemplars. It was great working with students in 5I who participated in a Jot Thoughts collaborative activity in which their deconstructed the purpose of their writing unit. I loved listening to the conversations of 6C who had to read a piece of writing and, using their scale, hunt for evidence as to what standard on the scale it achieved. They were great detectives. In Maths it was great seeing the smiling faces of students in 5G as they participated in a challenging Rally Coach activity. Students had to teach their peer about their number sequence and whether it was ascending or descending. Great start to Term 3,Year 5 and 6!

Science in Year 5
This term in Year 5 Science students are exploring how the Earth is part of a system of planets orbiting around the sun and how this knowledge has developed from people’s contributions. This week I worked with 5R who focussed on the impact people’s contributions to space science have on our daily lives. 5R looked at Nicolaus Copernicus and discovered he was the first to believe that the sun was at the centre of our universe. It was great seeing how engaged students were in the study of Science.

Deputy Principal – Year 5 & 6

This term promises to be an exciting term of learning! Our students will continue their learning in English, Maths, Science, Technology, HASS, PE, Italian and in some aspects of The Arts. They will also commence their Health units. Students will learn about making healthy choices to support their wellbeing and to better understand their emotions.
We look forward to supporting all of our students to be their very best as they continue to develop and apply their new understandings.
More information about each year level’s curriculum can be found on the Term 3 Curriculum Overview attached.
