High Quality Teaching and Learning
Mango Hill SS is committed to ensuring high quality teaching and learning for all students. Our school leadership team is very active in classrooms supporting teachers to be their best and tracking student learning and wellbeing. Over the past few weeks, I have continued visiting classrooms with the Deputy Principals and Heads of Curriculum to ask students a series of questions to ascertain if they have clarity in their learning. The questions include:
- What are you learning?
- How are you going?
- How do you know?
- How can you improve?
- Where can you get help if needed?
We have been impressed with the answers from students and the focussed work of our staff. If students know how to learn and have clarity of expectations, they know where to focus their time and attention and can use the feedback more effectively to ‘bump up’ or improve their work. The photos below show some of the students engaged in their learning and talking with members of the leadership team.

Care Class Mystery Meet
Last Friday the Deputy Principals and I continued our new process of meeting a ‘Mystery Student’ from each class to discuss our focus of the week. It was a pleasure to meet with these students and hear about their strengths. It was also wonderful for them to mix with older and younger students and share their learnings.

P & C Meeting
Next Monday 3 August our next P & C Meeting will be held in the staff room from 6:30pm-8:00pm. We will be discussing the 2021 book and stationery list and ‘The Resilience Project’. All parents and carers are welcome to attend.
Have a wonderful week

Focus of the Week
The focus introduced on Friday was ‘Using Our Strengths’. This topic will be revisited each day throughout Week 3. Every person has character strengths or assets that are important pathways to building resilience and wellbeing. By knowing and understanding our strengths and making choices that are aligned with those strengths, we create more opportunities for positive emotions, social connectedness and wellbeing in our lives. With your child, you may like to discuss some strengths that your family value.
Thank you
Peta
Playgroup
What a wonderful start to playgroup this term we have had. Miss Livvy has been doing a wonderful job each Friday morning. We still have some spots left if anyone is interested in coming along. We do need to have an attendance register, so you can register your attendance each week by emailing Jasmine Benfer at jbenf10@eq.edu.au. Due to social distancing and hygiene and health guidelines, we will need to limit the numbers attending, so we do ask for you to only rsvp, should you intend on coming that week. Families attending playgroup need to bring their own water bottles. We will be doing lots of hand washing and cleaning of equipment! We ask that parents in attendance ensure they are always 1.5 metres away from others.
Looking forward to seeing you at playgroup!
Student of the Week
Learning Walk and Talks
Last week, Ms Egan and I visited Prep classrooms for a Learning Walk and Talk. We like to do this every few weeks, so we can be part of the learning in classrooms too! During a Learning Walk and Talk, we ask students questions about their learning. It can be tricky for our youngest students, to focus their thinking onto their learning rather than what they are doing. But when students can articulate their learning clearly, with intent, then we know there is deep thinking and deep understanding!
We saw some wonderful work in each classroom. When our students can answer these questions about their learning, it shows that our Prep teachers are teaching thoughtfully, ensuring every lesson intention is precise.
The five questions we ask students are: What are you learning? How are you going? How do you know? How can you improve? Where can you get help?
Vision Screeners
Vision Screeners were completed last week and information about the results was sent home with your child. Good vision and good hearing are vital for good learning! Please see the email our Inclusive Learning Teacher, Mrs Stewart sent you about the upcoming hearing screeners. At less than $20 per child, it’s a low cost way to ensure your child has good hearing for learning.
Uniform Reminders
Please ensure your child’s school bag is either the Mango Hill State School bag (such a durable, hardy bag – it truly does last for years!) or a plain navy or plain black bag. Please also take note of our winter uniform; students should be wearing their Mango Hill jumper. Girls should wear black or navy stockings underneath dresses. Patterned tights / coloured socks / coloured jumpers are best left for weekend wear. We thank you for your support.

Have a wonderful week

Diving into Maths in Term 3
What a pleasure to see the Year 1 and 2 students dive into Math this term. They have been busy learning to solve addition and subtraction problems (Year 1) and representing multiplication and division situations (Year 2). This new learning has built on their learning from Semester 1. The students have been participating in learning activities that encourage the students to develop their problem solving and reasoning skills. These Math lessons are often hands on, noisy sessions where students practise working out solutions using materials and justifying their answers.
Our Year 1 students, using their counting strategies in addition and subtraction situations, have been encouraged to identify the type of situation (is it addition or subtraction?), discuss the counting strategy they are using and try more than one way to represent the solution. We encourage talk and sharing of ideas!!

Year 2’s have been making arrays with materials to represent multiplication and division situations, and exploring the relationship between multiplication and division. Plenty of explaining their answers and how they can flexibly problem solve in different ways has seen maximum engagement!

Have a great week!

Great growth mindset and persistence in 3M
3M did a remarkable job this week working with Miss Black to Bump Up their writing. They carefully looked at a piece of a writing and celebrated all the great things they saw that were on the scale. This helped the class decide what needed to happen next to make the paragraph even better. Miss Black did one with them and then they got to have a go themselves. Everyone demonstrated such a great growth mindset and persistence. It was lovely seeing them learn from each other and using the learning wall to help them become better writers. Keep up the great work 3M, you are super stars!

Achieving AR results
As for our Year 4 students, how exciting to have so many new students on AR this past week. I love the motivation and passion you are all demonstrating. Don't forget the Hub is open for borrowing before and after school. Try reading for at least 10 minutes every day. My favourite time to read is before bed and when we have to go for long drives. Grab a book and read!
Have a lovely week

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
Last week I was given the pleasure of visiting our Year 6 students as they participated in SciConnect with Mrs Kelly Koch. Students were given the opportunity to use digital technology resources, like Merge Cubes to investigate the different organs of the body. Specifically, students also examined the human brain and looked at different diseases that continue to plague humans.

Year 6 Graduation
In the coming days I will be sending a survey to all Year 6 parents regarding this year’s graduation. The intent is to get as much parent voice in this space as possible before decisions are made regarding what the event will look like. I encourage all parents to have their say. What is guaranteed is that our Year 6 cohort will have a great event that is a fitting celebration of their contribution to Mango Hill State School.
Life Education
Last week saw the start of Life Education for 2020. The sessions aim to motivate and empower young people to make smart life choices for a healthy future. Students have looked at important ways to ensure they are safe while using the internet, important lessons about the human body and learned skills to ensure they make good decisions when faced with conflict. Students that have already participated in the sessions have said that they “had fun while also learning things that will help them as they get older”.

Have a great week

Student Code of Conduct
During 2020, all Queensland state schools are developing a Student Code of Conduct. At our school, this will replace the Responsible Behaviour Plan, which you can currently view on our website. The Code of Conduct will be developed in consultation with our community. What will be in the Code? It will include our whole school approach to discipline, a number of our policies and other relevant information.
This term, we are commencing our consultation with a number of meetings for staff. By early Term 4, our student leaders will have been consulted on behalf of our students and parents and the community will have the opportunity to consult with us too, initially through P&C and School Council and later through invitation to a Community Forum.
When our Student Code of Conduct has been developed and signed, a copy will be available on our school website, and the Code will then be reviewed annually. We will keep you up to date as the semester progresses.
With thanks

Health Units in Term 3
This term all students from Prep to Year 6 will develop their understandings about Health and wellbeing as they participate in units of work with a health focus. These units have been newly developed, based on the Australian Curriculum for Health and Physical Education.
In Prep students will explore ways to look after their bodies as they change and grow. Year 1s will also investigate how their bodies change as they grow, but will consider what they need to grow (e.g. keeping themselves healthy, safe and physically active). In Year 2 students will discuss ways in which to build a positive self-identity, developing strategies which include asking for help and setting goals. Our Year 3 students are soon off to the PCYC to build their confidence with bikes and scooters. They will then be able to reflect upon the challenges and emotions experienced when participating in new and varied activities.
In Year 4 students will investigate ways to make healthy choices and complete a scenario where they will provide advice for a MH student who needs a plan to stay safe, healthy and active. After investigating how we make choices and considering the people who influence our choices, our Year 5 students will create a poster exploring identity and diversity. In Year 6 students will learn about how to make healthy choices when considering drink options, and apply their learnings to provide advice for another imaginary MH student who requires direction and support.
Students’ work in Health will be monitored and assessed throughout Term 3, and reported on in the Semester 2 report cards at the end of the year. We look forward to watching them learn and apply their new understandings in their daily life.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Don’t forget time is running out to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge. All completed forms should be returned to the Hub by 28 August.
Borrowing
The Hub is open every morning from 8:15am and until 3:00pm every afternoon for borrowing. Don’t forget that a library bag helps care for our school environment, especially our precious library books.
Lost Property
The Hub is also the place where lost property is sent. While we try our best to reunite hats and coats with their owners, this is only possible if items are clearly marked with students’ names and classes. Everyone is welcome to check our Lost Property wagon before or after school, or at lunch time if they are looking for a lost item.
AR Millionaire Readers
Congratulations to Prithuvi who this week reached another amazing milestone in AR. He has now read 5 million words in AR quizzes this year! We are very proud of his achievements and can’t wait to see how many more words he will read this year! Pop on down to see all of the photos on our special AR display in the Hub.
Have a lovely week
