Excitement as our Building Works Progress
It is very exciting to see our new three-storey senior classroom block with 24 classrooms draw toward its completion. Year 5 and 6 students will move into this new building at the end of this term ready for Semester 2. A number of our ‘hire buildings’ will then be moved out allowing more space for children to play.
We are also excited to secure funding for a new multi-purpose court with covered roof, a new senior playground and a new junior soccer field down in the Year 3-6 area. This work will continue into term 3 and the whole project should be complete ready for Term 4.
Our junior playground is also about to undergo a transformation with significant earthworks. Fencing will be in place shortly and the Year 1 and 2 teachers will work with the students on new play zones while construction is underway. This work will take a few months and should also be ready for term 4.
Moreton bay Regional Council have advised that works are scheduled to start as soon as the weather clears on the Kinsellas Rd pedestrian crossing. We are working with TMR to employ crossing supervisors to support students crossing from Capestone to and from school. We are also planning a link pathway running parallel with our front carpark that will link the crossing into the school. The installation of this linking with the future pathway into the school from Kinsellas Rd will ideally reduce foot traffic through Tourmaline Circuit and Zircon Place and provide a more direct and safer alternative for students.
Works are also scheduled to start on the small link of footpath through Sunstone Circuit Park to link in with the footpath on school grounds. Pedestrians are currently walking through the garden so this will just formalise the pathway. Council are also installing a water fountain in the park close to the footpath/basketball half court as part of this project.
The photos below give you a sneak peak of the progress made in the three-storey senior learning block. We can’t wait to see it all finished!

NAPLAN
Great work by our Year 3 and 5 students who have participated in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) over the past few days. These tests will continue next week and we expect results later this term.

Safety and Courtesy
A gentle reminder that parents need to show courtesy to our neighbours when parking. We have had concerns raised about parking in driveways and on yellow lines. Illegal parking causes safety concerns for students and difficulties for local residents. The council have advised that rangers will be patrolling at drop off and pick up times and fines will be issued to those breaking the laws and putting students lives at risk.
National Reconciliation Week – Date Claimer
National Reconciliation Week occurs from the 27th May until the 3rd June. The National Reconciliation Week 2022 theme, “Be Brave. Make Change.” is a challenge to all Australians— individuals, families, communities, organisations and government—to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians. At Mango Hill State School, we are continuing our journey of understanding and learning about our shared histories, cultures and achievements. During National Reconciliation Week and beyond, we will learn about some of the actions we can take to be brave and make change.
If you wish to explore this further at home with family and friends, visit: https://nrw.reconciliation.org.au/2022-actions-to-make-change/
Yarn and Eats
Each term we invite our Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students and their families to join us for a Yarn and eats afternoon. This week we had our first one for the year with lots of food, fun and laughs. We had a range of activities including sand drawing, chalk drawing, Indigenous music and Indigenous ball games. Thank you to all of those families who could make it along for the afternoon. We look forward to our next one in Week 10 of this term!

The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is Road Safety which coincides nicely with National Road Safety week from 15th - 22nd May 2022. Students will be learning how to care for self by being safe around roads and how to travel safely to school.
Classroom discussions will be based around the following.
When I care for self:
- I wear a helmet to keep my head safe,
- I wear closed in shoes to keep my toes safe
- I look both ways to keep myself safe from being hit by a car
- I use the pathways
- I remain with an adult and ensure I am walking on and near roads.
When I care for others:
- I listen to the crossing supervisors to keep myself safe and respect them
- I follow the road rules and care for road authority by respecting what they tell me.
The following resources put out by the Department of Transport is an excellent way to start some discussions at home too.

ICAS Information
ICAS registrations are now open. Please see below registration letter below.
Emergency contact pick up
An emergency contact can only collect a student from school if the parent/carer has provided written explicit authorisation for that person to collect the student from school.
Student of the Week
Maths in Prep
We are Moving N Proving in Prep Land in maths. Our teacher gives us a question and we move to somewhere in the room, depending on what we think the answer could be. It gives us a chance to explain our thinking, because our teachers ask us to prove why we chose our answer!
Check out these great photos below.

Positive Playtimes in Year 1
This term the teachers in Year 1 are working hard to set children up for success in the playground by teaching the social skills for play. One of the ways they do this is by reading social stories to make explicit the expectations for play.
A wide range of play options are also offered to ensure all children are engaged during play time. Some children love a good run around on the soccer field or playground while others enjoy quieter play using the resources in the Junior Undercover Area. We also have many different clubs on offer that cater to the students’ different interests. Check out these children at Guided Drawing Club.

There will always be disagreements between young children as they learn to play with one another in the playground. Our teachers use these times as ‘teachable moments’ where they unpack the perspectives of the children involved and then teach them strategies for how to get along with one another. We are so lucky to have so many caring teachers in Year 1 who take the time to ensure everyone has a successful play.
Nudgee Beach Excursion – Getting Excursion Ready!
The Year 1s are so excited about our upcoming excursion to Nudgee Beach. These classes will be attending on the following days:
- 1C, 1H, 1P and 1W – Friday 13 May
- 1L, 1D and 1S – Monday 16 May
- 1F, 1O and 1J – Tuesday 17 May.
The children will need to wear their sports uniform and school shoes on their excursion day. Students will also need the following packed in their school bag:
- School hat
- A lunchbox with an ice brick (as there will be no refrigeration) containing fruit break, lunch and snack
- A water bottle
- Sunscreen
- Insect repellent
- Spare change of clothes (including socks), towel and plastic bag in case they get wet
- An extra pair of enclosed shoes that can get wet (no gumboots or Crocs). These might be an old pair of sneakers or aqua shoes.
The extra pair of shoes is a MUST as the children will be walking through water and getting wet.
We know that the Year 1s will have lots of fun. We can’t wait hear all about their adventures at Nudgee Beach when they return!
Learning in Year 2
It’s full steam ahead for learning in Year 2. Our Year 2 teachers collaborate with our Specialist teachers to ensure that students are Ready to Learn in Specialist lessons. Teachers are experts in transitioning students from one learning experience to another so that no learning time is lost and students start their Specialist lessons calm and focussed. Our teachers including our Inclusive Learning Teacher, Ms Nada Tanner, liaise with Specialist teachers to facilitate any adjustments for students. Does your child have a favourite Specialist lesson?
Play Time in Year 2
Later this week, weather permitting, fencing will go up in the Junior grassed area. It is all part of the journey to development of a fabulous play area for our Junior students. Whilst construction is underway, there will be some changes to play areas for Year 2. The good news is that lots of play options will stay the same. Our students will learn about the changes and teachers will help our students as they adjust to the new zones.

Celebrating Loved Ones
Thank you to all our loved and cared for family members who attended our Loved Ones Day last week. It was so wonderful to see so many family members attend Friday’s event and spend some quality time with the students in our classrooms. There were a range of activities hosted across Year 3 including letter reading, games, dancing, pamper parlour and showcasing of student learning. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces. For those who were not able to attend we very much hope you had a very special weekend!
Please enjoy some of these lovely photos from the afternoon.

Learning Together
3K this week did a super job working in pairs to improve their learning. There was such rich, supportive conversations as students worked collaboratively to give each other feedback using the scale in wiritng. Students were so helpful in their feedback as they didn’t just share with their partner how they could bump up their learning, but spoke about why and how it will make their diary entry make sense or more interesting to the reader. Well done 3K!

Have a great week

Learning in Year 4
This week I was lucky enough to visit some Maths lessons in 4L and 4H. In both classes, students were learning to solve open-ended problems that featured unknown values. We have some serious mathematicians in Year 4! In 4H, it was particularly great to see the peer tutoring occurring, whereby students observed their partner solve a problem and offered them advice and encouragement as they worked it out. The students in 4L were so persistent, as Mrs Langman supported them by solving some problems as a whole class, before moving into smaller groups and finally attempting some problems on their own. Well done to Miss Haworth and Mrs Langman on providing such engaging Maths lessons!

Lunchtime Clubs
There are so many different clubs on offer for our Year 4 students each day, but a real favourite is Hub activities every Tuesday. This week I visited our Year 4 students doing activities in the Hub during their break time. It was fantastic to see students engaged in a range of activities including reading, chess, marbles and building blocks. I might just find myself there next Tuesday too!

Mother’s Day Afternoon
It was wonderful to have so many mums, grandparents and carers join us for our Mother’s Day afternoon last Thursday. The Year 4 students spent time with their mums and loved ones creating cards, doing art, getting and giving massages and having fun at the photo booth. I hope all of the mums were spoiled last weekend!

Have a super week

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
Thank you to Miss Danielle O’Brien for her leadership of Year 5 and 6 while I was on leave. It has been wonderful being welcomed back into classrooms to see the evidence of learning that has occurred this term. I had the opportunity to visit 6T and 6D this week as students collaboratively engaged in a feedback detective activity in which students looked through their writing samples and matched the appropriate next step feedback. Students had great clarity of success and were able to support each other to improve their writing. Well done Year 6!
This week has been a huge week for Year 5 as they participated in their first NAPLAN tests for this year. Students showed great maturity and resilience as they approached their tasks. I was very proud of all of our students and look forward in celebrating their success!

Museum Display
This week we have a special display in the Hub celebrating the history of Queensland schools. For those of us who can remember, many things have changed including the way in which we carried our books and lunches to school. On display is a school port, exactly like the one Ms Holm had at school – long before school bags with zippers – so pop on down and have a look. I wonder if you can work out what some of the things were used for. I wonder what was delivered in the little glass bottle?
These resources are a great way to learn more about history. History is an important part of our HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) curriculum. Students from Prep to Year 6 have an opportunity to engage with a range of topics linked to HASS throughout the year.
This term our Year 3 students are learning about the first schools in Queensland and comparing how these are similar and different to our schools today. In Year 5 students are learning about how the arrival of Europeans in Australian changed the lives of the First Nations Australians. In Year 6 students are learning about the contributions of both First Nations Australians and migrants, considering how these experiences might be very different from ours.
Even though history focusses on the past, we can all learn so much about ourselves and our communities from these events and experiences. We can also look ahead to the future and consider how our lives might be shaped by the choices we make today. We look forward to seeing the students share their learnings about these topics in the coming weeks.

Scholastic Book Club
Thank you to all of those families who supported the school by purchasing books from Scholastic Book Club. Orders have now closed for this term’s Book Club. We expect the orders to be back within a week or two. Once the orders do arrive we would love some help sorting and delivering them. If you can help by volunteering an hour or so, please email Suzette shol0@eq.edu.au
Premier’s Reading Challenge
This week is the beginning of the Premier’s Reading Challenge! All students are invited to participate to read, read and read! Students should record the books read on the special PRC reading record form (attached or available in print from the Hub). There is plenty of time to read and record your books as the challenge goes until the end of August. Students can include home readers, library books or any of their favourite books from home.
Caring for our Books
Don’t forget that using a library bag is a great way to care for our books, especially during this very wet weather. Students can use a special library bag purchased from the Uniform shop or they might prefer to use any kind of fabric or plastic bag. Please help us to care for our precious resources. All wet, damaged or lost books will need to be replaced.
Have a fantastic week

Pine Rivers District Sporting Trials (10-12yr Old’s)
Pine Rivers District School Sport offers 10-12 Year old students the opportunity to compete at Metropolitan North trials and carnivals, with the possibility of selection into teams competing at State events. Students must be nominated by their school in order to attend a district trial or carnival.
Students who express an interest to trial can collect forms from our PE office. They will be given the Pine Rivers District forms and the relevant trial information. Completed district forms are to be returned to the PE office by the due date. Once the forms are collated, students will be nominated for the trial. Forms are then handed back to students and must then be taken to the coach/manager at the District Trials. Students will NOT be allowed to trial if district forms are not handed in completed. Unless specifically organised by the school, it is the parents’ responsibility to transport students to and from district trials.
Most Pine Rivers District trials are limited to students turning 11 or 12 years of age and who are considered at a high level in the sport e.g. Div. 1 or A Grade. Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming trials however are open for students turning 10, 11 and 12 years of age. Sports that students are able to trial for include the following.
- AFL
- Basketball
- Cricket
- Football (Soccer)
- Golf
- Hockey
- Netball
- Rugby League
- Rugby Union
- Softball
- Squash
- Tennis

- Triathlon.
Mango Hill can nominate up to three students for each district sport trial. If more than three students wish to be nominated Mango Hill will select the three best candidates for the trial. The selection of these students may be either based on past performances/current club form or through a selection trial at school.
If you are interested in your child trialling for Pine Rivers District more information can be obtained from the Mango Hill State School newsletter, with regular trial updates listed. You may also obtain trial information from the Pine Rivers District School Sport Website https://prdss1012yr.teamapp.com/?_webpage=v1 or Mr Nick Hills - nhill96@eq.edu.au

Met North Rugby League trials
A big congratulations to Gantin who represented Pine Rivers District at the Met North Rugby League trials last week. He came very close to selection in the Met North team but just missed the final team. We are very proud of his achievements & development this year. Great job Gantin!
Sporting Schools (Year Prep-6)
Sporting Schools is a national initiative, run by the Australian Sports Commission, which aims to help children foster a lifelong interest in sport, gain a healthier mind and body, have fun and learn sport activities and games skills in a safe environment. The Sporting Schools program is open to all Mango Hill students from Prep-Year 6. Each term Mango Hill will host coaching sessions at school for the chosen sports. At this stage Mango Hill will attempt to host two sports each term, one for students in Prep-Year 2 (up to 20 students) and another for students in Year 3-6 (up to 20 students). These sessions usually run afterschool from 3.00pm-4.00pm. This term touch football will be offered for students in Year 3-6 and AFL for students in Prep- Year 2.
Pine Rivers District Cross Country
Mango Hill competed in the Pine Rivers District Cross Country trials last Friday. In tough conditions, runners made their way to Pine Rivers Park to compete against the 22 other schools in the district.
Students were extremely excited and nerves were definitely present. The course, which consisted of laps around Pine Rivers Park, was in excellent condition with 10 year old competitors completing 2km and 11 and 12 year old competitors completing the 3km course.
The attitude that Mango Hill runners displayed prior, during and after running was excellent. All competitors completed their race to the best of their ability with many students happy to improve on their performance from the MHSS Cross Country.
Mango Hill had three runners finish in the top eight, which qualified them for the Pine Rivers District team to compete at the Metropolitan North Cross Country Trials later this term. Jayda K (4th – 10yr Girls), Ruby M (3rd - 11yr Girls) and Nadia (3rd – 12yr Girls) all ran fantastic races. Very gutsy runs by these three girls with many high-level competitors trying to chase them down at the end of their races. Well done to these students and the best of luck at the regional cross country later this term.
Well done to all the Mango Hill runners and a special thankyou to the parents who came on the day to cheer on our team.
