Clarity for Learning
We have had a great start to the term with students focussed on their learning. This week I have had the pleasure of visiting classrooms alongside some of our other leaders and coaches to see how students are progressing. We have listened to the students describe their learning, how they are going and how they will improve. I look forward to seeing students continue to improve as they develop clarity.
Mother’s Day
Over the next few days our Prep to Year 2 classes will host stay and play sessions in honour of Mother’s Day. We look forward to spending time with Mums and/or other loved ones to celebrate this important day.
On Thursday and Friday, the P & C will hold a Mother’s Day stall. Each class will visit the stall and students may buy gifts priced from $1 -$6. Students can buy two gifts, and on Friday at first break, leftover gifts will be available for students who would like to purchase extras. Please send along a bag for your child to put their gift/s into. Special thanks to the P & C for organising this event and to all volunteers who have offered to assist.
On behalf of the school community, we wish Mums and other loved ones, a very happy day on Sunday!
P & C Meeting
Next Monday 9 May is the monthly P & C Meeting. All parents and carers are welcome to attend at 6.30-8pm in the Studio (next to the old hall). I hope you can make it! If you are unable to attend but would still like to join you are welcome to attend via Zoom. Pease see link and password below.

The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday, is Communicating with our friends. This focus will continue in classrooms throughout the following week.
Students will work on what it means to be polite and how this might look and feel when saying kind words to each other. Students will also talk about how to:
- start conversations
- interpret social situations
- interact positively
- listen to others.
Students will learn that communication involves both speaking and listening carefully. We will also be reminded that communication can be non-verbal too. These skills will be introduced this Friday and continued throughout next week.
Naplan Online
NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum. One of the main benefits of NAPLAN Online is tailored (or adaptive) testing, in which the test presents questions of higher or lower complexity depending on a student’s performance. Tailored (or adaptive) testing is designed to assess a wider range of student abilities and to measure student achievement more precisely. Your child should not be concerned if they find questions more challenging than usual; they may be taking a more complex test pathway. A student’s overall NAPLAN score is based on the number and complexity of questions they answer correctly.
Why do students do NAPLAN?
Students in Years 3 and 5 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance.
What can I do to support my child?
On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for and students are not expected to do so. You can support your child by reassuring them that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and by reminding them on the day to simply do their best.
Our teachers have been working with students to ensure they are familiar with the types of questions in the tests and will provide appropriate support and guidance. Students have also had opportunities to practise using the NAPLAN app and public demonstration site so they are familiar with how it works and looks ready for next week.
What if my child is absent from school on NAPLAN days?
Where possible, we will arrange for individual students who are absent at the time of testing to complete missed tests at another time during the school’s test schedule. Please see the schedule below.
Where can I get more information?
For more information about NAPLAN:
- contact your child’s class teacher or Danielle O’Brien dxobr0@eq.edu.au or Ben Mills bxmil3@eq.edu.au (NAPLAN coordinators)
- contact your local test administration authority at https://nap.edu.au/contacts/test-administration-authorities-contacts
- visit https://nap.edu.au/

We’ve started a conversation blitz in our playground!
This week we are working on following two step instructions and having a conversation sharing some detail. If your child arrives home with a stamp on their left hand, it means they have done this in the playground and a grown up has given them a stamp on their hand as a reward!
Our Mother’s Day Stay and Play mornings are Thursday and Friday of this week. Your class teacher has emailed you which morning your class is scheduled.
We recognise all different types of families at Team Mango. Some families have two mums, three mums, aunts as primary caregivers, dads as sole caregivers. It doesn’t matter to us; we just love that our Team Mango kids are loved and cared for! So any grownup care giver is welcome at our Stay and Play mornings.
Have a lovely week

Inventing New Characters in English
This term the children in Year 1 are inventing new characters for the stories they read in class. They are drawing pictures of their new characters and writing descriptions to tell about what the characters look like and do.
This task gives lots of opportunities to use descriptive language. Our teachers are working hard with the students to brainstorm words that describe what something looks like or an action and how it is done. Look at the students in 1O bumping up this simple sentence by adding description.

Mother's Day Stay and Play – Celebrating with Special Loved Ones
Special loved ones are invited along to our Stay and Play afternoon on Thursday 5 May 2:30 – 3:15pm in the Junior Undercover Area. Those coming are in for a real treat! There will be portrait drawing, a reading corner, beading as well as crown and card making. Our playground will also be open and there will be a range of play equipment out to keep everyone busy. We look forward to seeing you there!
Learning in Year 2
We are learning to write imaginative recounts this term, writing as a character. This provides our students with lots of opportunities to further develop and deepen their learning, concepts and skills from Term 1. We are having great fun with Writing Café and we are particularly focusing on onomatopoeia. We hope you hear your children choose words that imitate sounds in their conversations with you.
Play time in Year 2
We are all trying hard to Care for Others and make great friendship moves at play time in Year 2. Teachers are helping our students build friendship skills, take turns, understand the rules of games and what to do if a friend to be is sitting on the Buddy Bench. Teachers and teacher aides supervising play interact with students to model friendship skills, and those important self-regulation skills.
Stay and Play in Year 2
Our Year 2 Stay and Play dates are Thursday and Friday of this week. Year 2 classes have sent home invitations with details. See you there!

Learning Together
How wonderful to see our students working so hard to co-construct learning walls to support their learning. Over the past 2 weeks students have been working closely with their teacher to create a Bump It Up wall that will help them achieve their learning goals in writing and number work. It is a place where they represent their learning with pretty useful resources that help students develop a deep understanding of the learning that is currently taking place, aligned to their personal goals. I love seeing students using the Bump It Up wall to enable them to be successful, independent learners.
Caboolture Historical Village
This week we saw 3D, 3E and 3K attend the Caboolture Historical Village excursion. Once again we are so proud of how our students represented Mango Hill State School. They were model students. Thank you to all our parent helpers. Your support is very much appreciated!

Have a great week

Deepening Clarity
I had the pleasure of spending some time in 4G this week, watching them improve their writing by starting sentences with feelings to show emotion. The students in 4G collaborated to construct high quality sentence starters that they could use in their writing that would show a range of emotions. Once these sentence starters were constructed, they used these to improve their writing. As I spoke with students and asked them how they were going with their learning, they were able to explain their learning and progress to me, by self-assessing against the lesson success criteria. Super clarity in learning from 4G and Mrs Goodall!

The Four Cares at Playtime
This week’s care focus is on the Four Cares at Playtime. In Care Class this week, Year 4 reviewed how they can care for self, others and the environment while out in the playground. Our Year 4 students do a wonderful job at doing this consistently, but I will be on a special lookout during the week to recognise some students actively displaying the Four Cares while playing.
Have a super week

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
Year 5 and 6 are well underway with developing their skills as writers this term. Year 5 students are learning the art of persuasion and writing their persuasive texts. In Year 6, students are deconstructing the novel Blueback and its meaning using the analytical essay structure. Classes have been busy collaborating with their peers, reflecting on their scales and using their Bump It Up Walls to help them be successful and improve their work.
Interschool Sport
Last week our students participated in the first of their Interschool Sports Days for this term. It was great to hear the positivity and excitement of our students as they connected with their peers and members of other schools. Our students displayed great commitment and teamwork across all of the sports played. Our teachers do a great job of engaging students in collaborative learning, encouraging each child to share their own thinking and understanding with others in the classroom and it was wonderful to see this teamwork in action at Interschool Sport. Super job Year 5 and 6 students and staff and a big thank you to the PE staff for their organisation.

Reading for Mother’s Day
While our mothers, grandmothers, aunties and other special family members might love a new pair of slippers or a special treat for dinner, I am also sure they would love a chance to read with their children. Take the opportunity this Mother’s Day to find a good book and share it with your mum. You could choose a book that she would love or share one of your favourites with her. Mums might like to suggest this idea to their children too – I find hints are always the best way to receive a present that you would really love!
To celebrate Mother’s Day we have a special display of picture books that acknowledge the special role mothers and grandmothers play in our lives. The Hub is open every day for borrowing from 8.15am and every afternoon until 3pm.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Another way to celebrate reading is to participate in the 2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge. Our school has registered and we look forward to 100s of students participating. The annual reading challenge begins this year from the 9 May and will continue until 26 August. All participants should record the books they read on the special PRC reading form – attached here and also available in print from the Hub. Once the forms are complete (but there is no hurry) please return them to the Hub.
In 2021 more than 168 000 children and students across Queensland took part in the challenge – let’s join them in 2022!
Scholastic Book Club
Don’t forget that families interested in supporting the Scholastic Book Club should complete their online orders by Friday 6 May. Orders are usually returned within a couple of weeks and books will be delivered to classrooms for students to take home.
To sort the orders once they arrive, we will also be looking for some Book Club volunteers. If you are able to support us with a couple of hours of sorting and delivery once the books return, please email Suzette on shol0@eq.edu.au.
AR Millionaires
Last week was an extra busy time for Accelerated Reader Millionaires. Congratulations to Ipshitha who reached her first million for 2022. Ipshitha is an avid reader so we anticipate there will be plenty more books and quizzes to be completed this term.
Congratulations also to Avery who reached her third million this year! Avery has a goal to read 1 million words every month – we can’t wait to see if she can do it!
We are very proud of Ipshitha and Avery and have added their photos to our special display in the Hub. Don’t forget to pop in to the Hub if you would like help with your AR goal.
Have a fantastic week

Pine Rivers District Sporting Trials (10-12yr Old’s)
Pine Rivers District School Sport offers 10-12 Year old students the opportunity to compete at Metropolitan North trials and carnivals, with the possibility of selection into teams competing at State events. Students must be nominated by their school in order to attend a district trial or carnival.

Completed district forms are to be returned to the PE office by the due date. Once the forms are collated, students will be nominated for the trial. Forms are then handed back to students and must then be taken to the coach/manager at the District Trials. Students will NOT be allowed to trial if district forms are not handed in completed. Unless specifically organised by the school, it is the parents’ responsibility to transport students to and from district trials.
Most Pine Rivers District trials are limited to students turning 11 or 12 years of age and who are considered at a high level in the sport e.g. Div. 1 or A Grade. Mango Hill can nominate up to three students for each district sport trial. If more than three students wish to be nominated Mango Hill will select the three best candidates for the trial. The selection of these students may be either based on past performances/current club form or through a selection trial at school.
If you are interested in your child trialling for Pine Rivers District more information can be obtained from the Mango Hill State School newsletter, with regular trial updates listed. You may also obtain trial information from the Pine Rivers District School Sport Website https://prdss1012yr.teamapp.com/?_webpage=v1 or Mr Nick Hills - nhill96@eq.edu.au

Met North AFL Trials
A big congratulations to Ivy and Alexis who represented Pine Rivers District at the Met North AFL trials last week. Both girls have come such a long way in the past 18 months developing their AFL skills and to now be trialling at such a high level is a testament to their commitment to AFL. We are very proud of them both.
PRD Cross Country
Best of luck to the 30 students from MHSS competing at the Pine Rivers District Cross Country this Friday at Pine Rivers Park, Strathpine. These students, who were selected based on their performance at the MHSS Cross Country event, will compete against other students from the Pine Rivers District area in 2km and 3km races. Best of Luck!
Sporting Schools (Year Prep-6)
The Sporting Schools program will once again be running in 2022. Sporting Schools is a national initiative, run by the Australian Sports Commission, which aims to help children foster a lifelong interest in sport, gain a healthier mind and body, have fun and learn sport activities and games skills in a safe environment. The Sporting Schools program is open to all Mango Hill students from Prep-Year 6. Each term Mango Hill will host coaching sessions at school for the chosen sports. At this stage Mango Hill will attempt to host two sports each term, one for students in Prep-Year 2 (up to 20 students) and another for students in Year 3-6 (up to 20 students). These sessions usually run afterschool from 3.00pm-4.00pm. Information for the programs each term will be advertised in the newsletter so please keep an eye out.
