Respect on ANZAC Day
It was wonderful to see our school community come together last Friday to honour the ANZAC traditions. Special thanks to Luke Howarth (Federal member for Petrie) and Steven Miles (Deputy Premier and State Member for Murrumba) for sending representatives on their behalf to lay wreaths. Also, special thanks to Amy Swalwell (P & C President) and Mr Jim Ling from the RSL for their support and attendance.
On Monday morning, we had around 50 students attend the ANZAC march at Kallangur on behalf of our school community. Our school leaders, Declan and Roma, laid a wreath on behalf of our school community. Thank you to these students and their families for their attendance.

End of Semester Awards
Our school community values excellence. At the end of each semester, students in Year 1-6 may receive the Principal’s Award for Excellence . The criteria has recently been reviewed to include:
- Commitment to effort in multiple subject areas
- Outstanding behaviour and
- Consistent compliance with the School Dress Code.
There are also awards for Academic Excellence and the Deputy Principal Encouragement Awards. Please read the attached criteria with your child and support them to achieve their goals.
Uniform expectations
We expect all students to wear their uniform with pride. This includes plain black shoes with white socks, hair tied back and the school hat.

2023 Enrolments
We are excited to see students enrolling for the 2023 school year. If you have a child turning 5 before 30 June 2023, please contact the office for an enrolment pack. Later this term we will organise Prep interviews and we can’t wait to meet all our new friends!
Each week at Mango Hill we have a focus of the week, which is unpacked during Care Class each Friday and then touched on throughout the following week. Care Class usually occurs in individual classes, but occasionally classes will meet with their ‘buddy class’ for their Care Class lesson. Our students and staff really value the opportunity to connect with students in other year levels and buddy classes are a fantastic way to do this.
The Care Class focuses are carefully selected to teach our students about citizenship, social/emotional wellbeing and to acknowledge and celebrate key events in our calendar. Below is an outline of the Term 2 Care Class overview.
Play allows children the chance to mimic what they see and practice skills. It gives them an outlet for creativity and experimentation, and helps them learn how to interact and communicate with others. Through this focus, teachers will give students the tools to use and discuss when to use these tools so they can develop and grow into strong, healthy, and independent individuals.
Upcoming Mid-Year Concert Details – Years 2 and 4
We are super excited to announce that our Mid-Year Concert this year will showcase the great performances of our Year 2 and Year 4 students. Please see attached the relevant details regarding costuming and the dates and times of the concert. Ticket information will be released in the second half of the term.

Prep News
We are starting to learn how to read in Prep Land! Last term, our focus was on learning all of the letter names and all of our sounds. This term, we are working hard on building our bank of sight words - those words we just need to be able to instantly recognise because they are tricky to sound out. Sight words are also so common - they are in every sentence! We need to know words like 'the' because they are everywhere.
You can help us at home, by playing games with us and helping us to recognise our letter names and our sight words. One to one correspondence is also important; knowing that when we say a word, we point to one word. One to one correspondence is crucial for literacy and numeracy development.

Have a lovely week

Problem Solving in Year 1
This term, the children in Year 1 are working hard to solve addition and subtraction problems. They are learning to represent their thinking in lots of different ways including using drawings, tens frames, Part Part Whole mats and number lines.
Look at these superstars in 1C who are making their thinking visible, by showing how they can solve addition problems in all these different ways.
There are lots of different ways you can promote this learning at home.
- Look for opportunities to talk about addition and subtraction in everyday situations. For example, you might say, ‘You earned $5 pocket money this week and you got $2 from the Tooth Fairy last night. How much money do you have now?’ or ‘You had 4 sandwiches in your lunchbox but there is 1 left in there now. How many did you eat at school today?’
- Give your child a number word problem. For example, ‘I had 5 Pokemon cards but I lost 3. How many do I have left now?’. Ask your child to tell you if the word problem is an addition or a subtraction story. Have them tell you what words in the story told them what operation to use.
- Give your child two numbers and ask them to make up their own addition story and/or subtraction story using them. ‘Can you think up a subtraction story using the numbers 3 and 5?’

Sibling Pick Up Change
The children waiting at sibling pick up will continue to wait in the Piazza this term; however, the spot that they will wait in has changed. Since the beginning of the year, the spot to wait had been in the green square. This is very close to where our students going to Helping Hands wait. To make things easier and so we can better distinguish between the two groups, we have moved the sibling pick up point just a few short metres away to the covered area opposite the Uniform Shop. Could you please remind older siblings to pick up from this new area.
Gratitude in Year 2
Year 2 are starting the term strong! It was such a pleasure to see our students settle into their classes again so quickly.
Congratulations to our students and thanks to our wonderful parents for setting your children up for success each day. Our theme this term is Gratitude. I wonder what your child is grateful for? We end our days at school spending just a couple of minutes identifying and sharing “What Went Well?” You can help model this for your child by speaking with them each day about the things you notice went well for you and asking about what went well for them.
Learning in Year 2
We love Math in Year 2. Teachers and students are all excited to start this term solving “My Secret Number” by using clues. These clues include greater than/less than, what the number would round to (tens or hundreds), where the number would sit on a number line, how the number would be partitioned and so on. You might like to join in the fun and learning by asking your child to play "My Secret Number” with you at home.

Stay and Play in Year 2
Our Year 2 Stay and Play is next week. Mark your calendars and keep reading your class newsletters and invitations for your child’s day and time.
Farewell (just for now) to Ms Beth Humphreys and Ms Jordan Olsen who start leave this week. We look forward to seeing them back at school for visits. I attach some photos of our week so far!

A Step Back In Time
What a wonderful way to start a new term! The lucky 3S, 3C and 3W were our first group of classes to attend the Historical Village as part of our HASS unit in week 1. It was with great excitement and curiosity students explored the different ways of living and learning in the ‘olden days’. What a wonderful experience for them all. Thank you to our amazing teachers for organising such an experience and our parent volunteers who joined our students on the day. Your help was very much appreciated!
We hope you enjoy a few photos of the students below.

Writing our Diary Entry
This week we have started digging in deeper on how to write a diary entry pretending to be one of the characters from Charlotte’s Web. When we have been writing about our events we have been working really hard to remember to add extra details about our emotions and using our verb groups to describe what our character is thinking and feeling. This has been tricky work, so together we are digging deeper at looking at how we describe the emotion rather than just listing it. Our goal is to engage the reader by using specific language our choices to paint a picture in the readers mind of the emotion we are trying to convey.
Have a great week

Deputy Principal- Year 3

Deepening Connetion
This year’s schoolwide vision is Deepen Connection and Clarity by Design and in Year 4 we work really hard to do this every day. In deepening connection, our classes begin each day with a greeting circle where students get the opportunity to share, listen and learn about each other. Our teachers use this time to check-in with each student before the day starts to ensure everyone is ready to learn. Teachers also use this time to inform their classes about what is coming up for the day, share any important messages and to review the focus of the week. I have enjoyed visiting classes this week during this important connection time each morning.
In 4R it was wonderful to see students spending their morning connection time writing gratitude messages to their classmates. Gratitude is such an important emotion to express and supports students to have a positive mindset. Well done to Miss Reade and 4R for expressing gratitude towards others so regularly!
This week I visited 4V during the start of their science lesson. Mrs Vos was supporting her students to make scientific predictions and to justify their predictions before conducting an investigation on the durability of different materials. It was interesting to read the predictions and justifications made by the students. I look forward to hearing about their scientific conclusions following their investigation!

Uniform Reminder
As the weather gets cooler, students are encouraged to dress accordingly to ensure they are comfortable throughout the day. It is important that students follow the MHSS dress code for Winter uniform when dressing for the cooler weather, which includes navy blue track pants, the school jumper and the school jacket. If your child is missing any of these items, they are available from the school uniform shop which is open on Monday from 8:00am-10:30am, Wednesday 1:30pm-3:30pm and Friday from 8:00am-10:30am.
Have a super week

Positive and Productive
What a positive and productive start to the term we’ve had in Years 5 and 6!
This week I had the opportunity to visit the Year 5 classrooms as they deepened their understanding of decimals. It was great to see students in 5G engaged in collaborative learning as they discussed and explained their thinking about to order and compare decimals. I also had the pleasure of visiting 5B during their guided maths rotations. I loved talking to students about how they were going and their next, best learning move.
Also, this week, Year 6 students have dived into exploring reversible and irreversible changes in their Science lessons. It was wonderful to hear students talk about the properties of different materials and identify if they were solids, liquids or gases. Be sure to ask your children about the different materials they analysed and compared! There are many fun experiments to come this term!
Well done Year 5 and 6!
Danielle O'Brien
Acting Deputy Principal – Year 5 & 6

Learning in Sci Connect
This year, in Sci Connect, we have been studying biology, focusing each week on a new body system (skeletal, digestive, nervous, circulatory). SciConnect is a Science extension program that connects our students with other schools in the region. The assessment was to create a 3D brain and neuron model, along with a Keynote of a selected brain disease. We’ve had brains made of jelly, play dough, 3D printed, lego and papier-mache.
See some examples of the fantastic models our students created below!
We also have Code Camp returning to MHSS this term, starting in Week 3. Please see the flyer below if you wish to participate in some Coding Fun!
Scholastic Book Club
This week students have been provided with a Scholastic Book Club brochure. Scholastic Book Club provides an opportunity for families to purchase some new books while at the same time supporting the school. For all books purchased by Mango Hill families from Scholastic, we receive a generous percentage of funds that we can then use to purchase some new books for our Hub collection. All support is greatly appreciated. Families interested in supporting the Scholastic Book Club should complete their online orders by Friday 6 May. Orders are usually returned within a couple of weeks and books will be delivered to classrooms for students to take home.
To sort the orders once they arrive, we will also be looking for some Book Club volunteers. If you are able to support us with a couple of hours of sorting and delivery once the books return, please email Suzette at shol0@eq.edu.au.
Library bags
Don’t forget as the rain returns, it is really important to have a library bag to care for our precious library books. This bag may be a special Mango Hill one, purchased from the Uniform shop or any plastic or fabric bag. We appreciate your support in taking care of our books.
Have a fantastic week

Well this term is all about Sports Day (Prep-2) and the Athletics Carnival (Yr3-6). All students in PE from Prep-Year 6 will focus on preparing for these big events which are held at the end of Term 2.
More information will come out later in the term but at this stage our confirmed dates are:
- Week 10 Monday 20 June – Junior Sports Day (all Year Prep, 1 and 2 students compete)
- Week 10 Tuesday 21 June – Senior Athletics Carnival – Discus, 200m/800m Finals (Some Year 3-6 students compete)
- Week 10 Wednesday 22 June - Senior Athletics Carnival – 8 & 9 Year Old students (Year 3s and some Year 4s compete)
- Week 10 Thursday 23 June - Senior Athletics Carnival – 10,11 & 12 Year Old students (Some Year 4s, all Year 5s & 6s compete)
Due to large student numbers at Mango Hill SS, we have a split Senior Athletics Carnival. This is to ensure students get the maximum opportunity to participate, students have enough space to compete safely and we have enough room for all spectators who attend. It will be a busy end to the term but we are thoroughly looking forward to it!
Pine Rivers District Sporting Trials (10-12 years)
Pine Rivers District School Sport offers 10-12 year old students the opportunity to compete at Metropolitan North trials and carnivals, with the possibility of selection into teams competing at state events. Students must be nominated by their school in order to attend a district trial or carnival.
Students who express an interest to trial can collect forms from our PE office. They will be given the Pine Rivers District forms and the relevant trial information. Completed district forms are to be returned to the PE office by the due date. Once the forms are collated, students will be nominated for the trial. Forms are then handed back to students and must then be taken to the coach/manager at the District Trials. Students will NOT be allowed to trial if district forms are not handed in completed. Unless specifically organised by the school, it is the parents’ responsibility to transport students to and from district trials.
Most Pine Rivers District trials are limited to students turning 11 or 12 years of age and who are considered at a high level in the sport e.g. Div. 1 or A Grade. Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming trials however, are open for students turning 10, 11 and 12 years of age. Sports that students are able to trial for include:
- AFL
- Basketball
- Cricket
- Football (Soccer)
- Golf
- Hockey
- Netball
- Rugby League
- Rugby Union
- Softball
- Squash
- Tennis
- Touch
- Triathlon.
Mango Hill can nominate up to three students for each district sport trial. If more than three students wish to be nominated, Mango Hill will select the three best candidates for the trial. The selection of these students may be either based on past performances/current club form or through a selection trial at school.
If you are interested in your child trialling for Pine Rivers District, more information can be obtained from the Mango Hill State School newsletter, with regular trial updates listed. You may also obtain trial information from the Pine Rivers District School Sport Website https://prdss1012yr.teamapp.com/?_webpage=v1 or Mr Nick Hills - nhill96@eq.edu.au

Pine Rivers Interschool Sport Update
All students have been informed by their classroom teacher what sport they are confirmed to be attending. For most students this was the first preference on their voting slip.
Information Forms Attached
Attached are the individual information forms for each sport. These do not need to be signed or returned to MHSS, but just provide some information for each sport including:
- General Information about the sport
- Venue
- MHSS Nominated Teams
- Equipment and Uniform Information
- Training Information.
Students need to come prepared on the day to play their chosen sport. All students need to bring their hat, water bottle, lunch and their sport specific equipment.
AFL Only - Mandatory Mouthguards
Please be aware that mouthguards for all players competing in the Pine Rivers AFL Interschool Sports are MANDATORY. It is mandated that all players wear mouthguards while playing AFL. Please note, while tackling is allowed, there is to be no slinging or dumping to the ground and players will be encouraged to play within the spirit of the game.
While it is acknowledged that wearing a mouthgrard potentially adds an additional cost to parents, it is something all schools must implement. If a student attends the AFL Interschool Sports without a mouthguard they will not be able to play any games.
Students attending AFL will be handed on Wednesday an “AFL: Mouthguard” permission form which must be returned to Mr Hills on or before the first Interschool Sport day. A copy of this form is also attached as well as a mouthguard information brochure.
Spectators
As it currently stands, parents/spectators will be allowed to attend Interschool Sports as long as they follow covid safe practices such as socially distancing etc. If there is a change to guidelines/restrictions, we will inform you. MHSS will follow all Pine Rivers covid safe practices for students and staff.
If you have any questions, or if your child can not attend the day, please contact your child’s classroom teacher and/or the MHSS absentee line.
Have a great week.
