A Great Start to Term 2!
It is wonderful to see the students return in such a positive manner after the Easter break. There has been plenty of excitement catching up with teachers and old friends and making new friends. A special welcome to families new to our school community!
ANZAC Day
Next Monday is ANZAC Day – an important day to commemorate and remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. On Friday 22 April, we will hold a whole school parade from 9.00-9.30am in Gigum Hall to commemorate this important day. Students are asked to wear formal school uniform where possible (unless they have a PE lesson on Friday). All parents are invited to join us. Please remember to social distance and stay home if unwell.
The Pine Rivers March on Monday has been limited to 50 students per school due to COVID so our student leaders and student councillors have been invited to attend to represent our school.
A reminder that Monday is a public holiday for ANZAC day.
School Photos Next Week
Unfortunately due to measures out of our control there has been a change to our school photo dates. Our school photos for 2022 will now be held next Thursday 28 April and the following Wednesday 4 May. Our school photos will be held in Gigum Hall. I will send an email to all families by the end of the week outlining the schedule for the school photos. Please note the following:
- Students should wear formal uniform
- Sibling photos will be before school from 7.45-8.30am on both days (Parents can go directly there)
- Students should bring their photo envelope on the day.
We would love a few volunteers who can assist on these days ensuring students are lined up ready in the correct uniform. If you are double vaccinated and can assist on either day for a few hours, please contact Jasmine Benfer jbenf10@eq.edu.au by Friday.
Last term, our school wide focus was on promoting Team Mango and building a stronger sense of community within our school. It was fantastic to see our students, staff and broader school community buy into this and demonstrate pride for our school community and for being a part of Team Mango.
This term our school wide focus is on gratitude. In our weekly Care Class lessons and in class each day, students will learn about what gratitude is, how they can show it and why it is important. Throughout the term, each class will regularly track what they have been grateful for and will celebrate together at the end of the term at their Four Cares celebration.
Gratitude is the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. Many studies have been conducted on the benefits of gratitude in both adults and children. Studies have shown that children who practise being grateful, benefit from:
- Improved emotional well-being
- Improved physical health
- Improved sleep
- Reduced feelings of stress and depression
- Positive attitude towards their schooling
- Strengthened social relationships
- Increased self-esteem
- Improved resilience.
Parents and carers are encouraged to promote this with their children at home too! Ask them about what they are grateful for at school each day. Their teachers will be doings this regularly too!
Focus of the Week
This Friday and on Week 1, we are focussing on ‘ANZAC commemoration and gratitude’. Students will attend a whole school parade Friday morning in Gigum Hall. We will take the opportunity as a whole school to remember the soldiers who fought in wars and helped shaped our nation.
Of our four cares (Care for Self, Care for Others, Care for Learning, Care for our School Environment) learning about gratitude relates to caring for ourselves. Students will learn how to focus on the good in their lives and consider how to be thankful for the things that we have.
When I am grateful:
- I focus on experiences and not so much material things,
- I am more empathetic and forgiving,
- I am less stressful and worried,
- I sleep better.
Useful resources about ANZAC day and being grateful:
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rapkYgnXxWA a mini lesson about ANZAC day.
- Write down 1 thing you are grateful for every evening before bed or share at the dinner table.
- Thank you notes to family or members of the community can help share gratitude.

ICAS Registrations Now Open
Mango Hill State School will once again participate in the 2022 ICAS Assessments. ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Digital Technologies. Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition. Top performers will be eligible for medals and the opportunity to attend a special award ceremony to have their academic excellence publicly recognised.
Please find attached the details regarding registration and Online Parent Payment System. Specific details of assessment days and times will be released in the near future.
We are so excited for Term 2!
We can’t wait to learn more and have fun with our friends.
This term we are focusing on our listening and speaking skills. We will learn how to listen and follow multi step instructions. This can be tricky because sometimes we forget the first two steps and only remember the last thing we hear! You can help us at home by expecting a bit more of us and asking us to do some jobs around the house. Keep the instructions simple, but make sure there’s more than one of them. For example, please get four plates and four cups out. Then get out four forks and four knives. (That one is super tricky! You might have to work up to that).
We are also working on conversations; taking turns sharing information and seeking information from others. Yesterday when I was asking children about their holidays they were keen to share with me, but most forgot to ask me about my holiday! With a simply prompt - is there anything you’d like to ask me? - they were able to say, “And how was your holiday Ms White?”
You can practise this skill at the dinner table each day or at the breakfast table in the morning. “What was your favourite part about today?” “Tell me about one thing you learned.”
I hope everyone had some relaxation time or fun adventures over the holidays. We were able to spend some time in the country. We tried to get outdoors as much as possible. I’ve attached some pics from the Sunflower Festival in Kalbar. We really loved the sunflower maze!

Have a lovely week

Year 2 News
Welcome back, Year 2 families! We especially welcome our Year 2 families who are new to Mango Hill State School this term. We look forward to getting to know you. For an overview of this term’s learning, please see the class newsletter sent by your class teacher. Our teachers and students have already started co-constructing Bump It Up Walls to support students with their learning and help them self-assess where they are at and what their next step will be.
As we prepare to farewell Ms Olsen, our Inclusive Learning Teacher, we welcome Ms Nada Tanner to the Inclusive Learning role in Year 2. Ms Tanner will be collaborating with our class teachers to deliver inclusive support for students in Year 2. We are also supported by our teacher aides, Ms Rayne and Ms Allen.
Check out the photos below from across our classrooms, and a photo of Ms Tanner so you can get to know her

Welcome to Term 2
Welcome back everyone! I hope you all had a restful break and had some lovely time outdoors and visiting family and friends. Speaking to our Year 3 students this week I heard many lovely stories about some wonderful holiday adventures our students went on over the Easter break. It was a joy to hear the excitement in their voices as they retold their holiday highlights.
Uniform Reminders
Super effort families for helping ensure our students care for self and wearing their full school uniform with pride. But as we know, as the mornings start to cool down we see more and more students coming to school with school jumpers. It is great to see all our little friends in full school uniform, however as the days are still reasonably warm please remember to put your child’s name and class on the tag or in the collar of the jumper so if they leave it somewhere we can return it to them. We very much appreciate your support and thank you for ensuring they are in full school uniform each day as we see the change in seasons.
Have a great week

Year 4 News
Welcome back to school! I have been thrilled to see our Year 4 students with big smiles on their faces as they have returned to school this week. We have overcome the uncertainty that comes with being in a new year level, with new students and teachers at the start of the year and can hit the ground running in Term 2. From what I have seen across our Year 4 classrooms during the first two days of school, that is exactly what is happening!
Both 4O and 4B have leapt into their first unit for the term on odd and even numbers. Students spent time investigating the properties of odd and even numbers as they building their knowledge and understanding of this concept before applying this to solve more complex problems in coming weeks. Our teachers work hard to provide fun and engaging lessons every day for our students, with a focus on ensuring they have clarity in understanding what they are learning and why. All Year 4 classes will be learning about odd and even numbers in the first few weeks of this term. I encourage you to ask your children about their learning in Maths, so that they can consolidate their understanding of this important concept.

Our Term 2 school wide theme is gratitude. Across the Year 4 classes, there is a variety of creative ways that students are sharing and acknowledging examples of gratitude each day. 4B spent Tuesday morning unpacking gratitude together, discussing what it means to them and how they can show gratitude each day. Students’ thinking is now on display in the classroom so they can be reminded to show gratitude regularly.
Term 2 is a busy term, with plenty of exciting events and opportunities coming up. This Friday is our whole school ANZAC day parade. Students are encouraged to wear formal uniforms, unless they have PE on this day. In Week 2 we also have our Mother’s Day afternoon. We invite all of our mums, grandmas or people who play this special role in their child’s life to join us on Thursday 5 May from 2.45pm in the piazza for an afternoon of special activities with your children. Finally, we have our first excursion for the year to Australia Zoo in Week 7.
I’m looking forward to observing and celebrating the continued growth of our Year 4 students this term!
Have a super week

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
Welcome to Term 2! While Mr Winney is on leave for the first three weeks of this term, I have the privilege of acting as Deputy Principal for the Year 5 and 6 Sector.
It has been wonderful to see the students reconnecting with their teachers and friends and diving straight into the learning for this term.
I had the pleasure of visiting many of the Year 5 classrooms this week as they commenced their learning of persuasive writing. Students were using the TEER paragraph structure to formulate their arguments and convince others of their points of view.
In Year 6, it was wonderful to see students build on their prior learning of fractions. Students were calculating fractions of quantities and ordering and comparing fractions on number lines.
This week, Mango Hill State Secondary College staff also visited our Year 6 students to give them a brief insight into High School.
NAPLAN Online
For families of students in Year 3 and Year 5, there will be a parent information session for NAPLAN online from 8.45am on Friday 29 April, in the school hall. If you have any questions regarding NAPLAN online, but cannot make it to the information session, please email your child’s classroom teacher, myself (dxobr0@eq.edu.au) or Ben Mills (bxmil3@eq.edu.au).
Have a good week

Term 2 Curriculum
This term our students will continue their learning in English, Maths and Science as well as developing their understandings related to Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) and The Arts. The Arts is made up of 5 strands including Dance, Music and Visual Arts. This term all students will work towards creating their own individual art work as part of their Visual Arts unit of work. These individual masterpieces will be displayed in Term 3 as part of our Gigum Arts Fest. Please see the attached Curriculum Overview for further details about the curriculum for Term 2.
Library borrowing
We were excited to see lots of eager borrowers back in the Hub this week. The Hub is open every morning before school (from 8.15am) and every afternoon after school (until 3pm). Sadly, last term we had a lot of books returned that were badly damaged, wet or mouldy. To care for our precious library books, it would be great if everyone could use a library bag. This bag can be a specially-purchased library bag (from the Uniform shop) or any kind of fabric or plastic bag. For lost or damaged books, our policy is to ask families to replace the book. For AR books, we need the book to be replaced with the same title as these books are often expensive and difficult to source. Thank you for your help in caring for our environment.
Accelerated Reader (AR)
It is with great excitement that we welcome to AR another group of readers. AR is a reading program that matches students to specific texts and then provides opportunities for students to build their comprehension skills. The attached parent information sheet provides further details for those families new to AR.
AR allows all students to set themselves some goals, and the beginning of the term is the perfect time to think about what might be possible this term. What level would you like to reach? How many quizzes might you be able to complete? How many words will you read this term?
Late last term Aadya reached her AR goal of reading 1 million words. We are very proud of Aadya and have added her photo to our special AR Millionaire display. Congratulations Aadya!
Have a fantastic week

Pine Rivers District Sporting Trials (10-12yr Old’s)
Pine Rivers District School Sport offers 10-12 Year old students the opportunity to compete at Metropolitan North trials and carnivals, with the possibility of selection into teams competing at State events. Students must be nominated by their school in order to attend a district trial or carnival.
Students who express an interest to trial can collect forms from our PE office. They will be given the Pine Rivers District forms and the relevant trial information. Completed district forms are to be returned to the PE office by the due date. Once the forms are collated, students will be nominated for the trial. Forms are then handed back to students and must then be taken to the coach/manager at the District Trials. Students will NOT be allowed to trial if district forms are not handed in completed. Unless specifically organised by the school, it is the parents’ responsibility to transport students to and from district trials.
Most Pine Rivers District trials are limited to students turning 11 or 12 years of age and who are considered at a high level in the sport e.g. Div. 1 or A Grade. Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming trials however are open for students turning 10, 11 and 12 years of age. Sports that students are able to trial for include;

- Softball
- Squash

Mango Hill can nominate up to three students for each district sport trial. If more than three students wish to be nominated Mango Hill will select the three best candidates for the trial. The selection of these students may be either based on past performances/current club form or through a selection trial at school.
If you are interested in your child trialling for Pine Rivers District more information can be obtained from the Mango Hill State School newsletter, with regular trial updates listed. You may also obtain trial information from the Pine Rivers District School Sport Website https://prdss1012yr.teamapp.com/?_webpage=v1 or Mr Nick Hills - nhill96@eq.edu.au
