Productive Parent Partnerships
Thanks to the parents who attended our Parents and Citizens Association AGM on Monday evening.
Congratulations to our new P & C Executive
- Amy Swalwell President
- Yanti Weaire Vice President
- Radhika Reddy Treasurer
- Michelle Angayam Secretary
We look forward to working in partnership with these wonderful volunteers.
I would also like to acknowledge outgoing executive members Renee Walls, Karen Puckeridge and Luciana Bortot for their commitment over the past year. Renee and Karen have been long term members of the P & C holding executive positions for many years. I would also like to acknowledge Cindy Clenton who has been an active P & C contributor for 10 years. We thank them all for their outstanding, generous contribution of time and energy. They will be missed!
It is also wonderful to see so many parents and families attend our Stay & Play afternoons over the past week. A great opportunity to build connection between students, parents and staff members.
Next week our staff will start parent teacher interviews. Don’t forget to book your interview by Friday afternoon so you have the opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher over the next four school weeks to hear an update on their progress and collaborate with the teacher about how you can work together to help your child reach their potential.

Costs for Parents 2022
At Monday evening’s P & C Meeting, the committee endorsed the 2022 costs for parents (Draft 2). Please find below a breakdown of all anticipated costs for this year.
Wear Orange for National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence
This Friday, we will stand together, as a community, on the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. We will use the opportunity to, once again, teach students the important message that bullying and violence is never okay and how to respond if they encounter it. Students may wear something orange in recognition of this important day. Students are asked to donate a gold coin. The Student Council will donate all proceeds to The Smith Family to help families in need, building a kindness culture.
What is bullying?
Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening. Bullying can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying behaviour is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time (for example, through sharing of digital records). Bullying of any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders.
Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.
How can parents help?
Parents and other carers have a key role in preventing and responding to bullying.
Learn what bullying is and what it is not. This is the first step in talking about how to prevent or respond to bullying with your child. 'Bullying' is a word that is used for lots of things that are not actually bullying. These other behaviours may be just as serious, but may require different responses.
Schools can be much more effective when parents report bullying and support their efforts to deal with it. Our Student Code of Conduct outlined the procedures we follow if a bullying incident is reported. https://mangohillss.eq.edu.au/Documents/Student%20Code%20of%20Conduct%20(PDF%202MB).pdf
Working together with the school is the best way to help your child resolve bullying issues.
We will work with you to resolve the situation and will also work with the other student's parents. Due to privacy laws, we will not be able to share information about any other students involved.
For more information go to https://bullyingnoway.gov.au.
Goodbye Axel
It is with immense sorrow that we heard of the passing of former MHSS student Axel Baiju.
Axel was a much-loved student at Mango Hill SS. He was very well regarded by staff and his peers and was voted School Vice-Captain in 2020. His infectious smile, his optimism and his care for younger students was noticed by many. He always tried his best for his peers, his school and himself. Axel loved his sport and was particularly fond of team sports like cricket. His support of peers, kindness toward others and sportsmanship were outstanding traits. He loved Italian and enjoyed learning another language and celebrating the diverse cultures in our community.
Over the past week, many students have spoken to me about their love of Axel. They have talked about how he helped them, gave them piggy-backs, walked them to class, played with them and cheered them up when they were sad. His legacy of kindness will remain a part of our community. He set a wonderful example for younger students.
Axel was the son of Baiju Paul and Soney Mullackal Joseph. His sister Hazel is also a wonderful little student at our school. Axel was a much-loved son, a doting big brother and a friend to all. On behalf of our school community, I extend our love, thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Axel. He will always be remembered.
Focus of the Week
The Care Class focus delivered this Friday, relates to the National Day of Action Against Bullying. Care Class lessons will be conducted with own classes and the focus continued throughout the following week.
Students will review this topic in care class regularly, so that all students understand that acts of bullying are unacceptable at our school and in life, that bystanders can make a difference. This is important so that students who are experiencing bullying know to report and to seek support for themselves. We also want students to understand that not all acts of unkindness, disputes or misconduct constitute bullying. This helps students to identify bullying, and thus enables the most effective response to behaviour. For a definition of bullying and other valuable information, see https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/
Parent Information Session – Save the Date
On Wednesday 23 March we have a wonderful opportunity for parents of high achieving students to attend a free presentation ‘Supporting High Ability Students Learning and Wellbeing’ with Michele Juratowitch, Director of Clearing Skies. Michele has had a long standing partnership with Mango Hill State School and we are very excited to offer you the opportunity to come and listen to her share ways in which we can build resilience in our students and to continue to strengthen their growth mindset towards their learning.
When: Wednesday 23March 2022
Where: Gigum Hall
Time: 1:00pm-2:00pm
We look forward to seeing you there.
Prep News!
Our Prep friends have been working hard to remember school routines for play. If your child comes home with stamps on their hands, it’s probably because they have been doing a great job at packing up when the bell goes and lining up to return to class. Our Preps are proud to show their stamps to their class teachers for their great work in the playground!
In Prep K last Friday, students drew some very detailed pictures of Ms White at parade, with a fascinator on her head! We are working hard in this final stretch of our pre-writing unit, to stretch for success. We are looking for beginning sounds in labels, lots of detail in our drawings (colour, size and different parts to the drawing). We want the drawing to speak for itself, to be really clear to the audience about the event and who was there. This is the beginning of writing, to know that we can use pencil and paper, to communicate a message.
In Maths, we are learning to subitise (know how many there are in a group, without needing to count them) and count on (I can see there are three, I count one more and that’s four). We are also practising sorting into different groups. You can support this learning at home with real life counting of objects. Our students love counting objects as they pack toys away. This would be an easy way at home, to practise counting!
Our first Stay and Play afternoon last Thursday was just lovely. Thank you so much to our families in attendance for such a beautiful afternoon vibe in the connection space. New parent friendships were formed! Students were able to show their caregivers their play space and what they like to do at breaks. Our teachers were able to get to know you all in a more relaxed setting. We really valued the time we spent together and we hope you did too!

Have a lovely week

Good Things Come in Threes
Last week our Year 1s were entertained by the performers from Meerkat Productions with their show Good Things Come in Threes. Three of the students’ favourite fairy tales were performed using three different styles of puppetry. The actors used marionettes, shadow puppetry and hand puppetry to bring to life the fairy tale stories of The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Three Little Pigs.
After each story, the performers spent time showing the students how the puppets were designed and some lucky audience members even had a chance to use the puppets.
This incursion experience helps to support the teaching and learning of writing and shared reading in the classroom. When children get to see and experience the stories they’ve read about bought to life on the stage, their understanding of language is enhanced.
Here’s what some of the children said about the show….
‘I liked when the wolf came out and tried to chomp the people in the audience.’ – Bethany.
‘I liked when Crystal joked with Steve and put her hand over his mouth to stop him talking.’ – Lizzie.
‘It was so funny when Steve dressed up as a fairy with a tail.’ – Prabhleen and Lucas.
‘I liked it when they used the shadow puppets to tell the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.’ – Bodhi C.

Learning in Year 2
This week, we are all about reptiles in Year 2. Six of our nine Year 2 classes have experienced the Reptile Adventure incursion. I attach some photos below. Teachers are following up the incursion with follow up activities. Over the course of this week and next week, all students will write a recount of the Incursion Day. During the writing process, teachers provide students with feedback. Teachers do this in a number of ways using the Mango Hill State School feedback colours, linking the feedback to the student friendly scale. I have added a picture of the feedback poster you can see in each Year 2 classroom.
High Five in Year 2
I encourage you to ask your child if they know how to use the High 5 in the playground including what sorts of things and when to report. It might lead to some great discussions. I have included an image of the High Five.
Stay and Play in Year 1/2
Thank you to parents who were able to attend the Stay and Play on Monday. It was great to see so many families interacting together and getting to know their child’s teacher that little bit better too. We understand that not everyone can come to every event. We hope to see you very soon at another opportunity!

Super Star Readers
I have been so impressed by the writing of our Year 3 students this past week. Students have been so proud of their progress and have been making a conscious effort to use a range of persuasive language features to convince familiar and unfamiliar audiences to agree with them. My favorite this week was a little person in 3W who wrote me a letter requesting all our learning to be on the iPad. Her opening paragraph tugged on my heart strings that found me saying yes before I even got to her reasons and explanations. Clever strategy!
This week our students will begin to move into their writing assessments where they will be sharing their opinion and including at least two reasons, with detail. I wonder if their teachers will agree or disagree with them.

Have a great week

Year 4 News
It’s been another busy week for our Year 4 teachers and students. I have appreciated seeing our students show great care for learning as they continue to show the Team Mango skills of collaboration, sharing their knowledge and understanding with peers and classmates.
Our schoolwide care focus this week is on transitions and moving around the school. I decided to visit our Year 4 classes in some of their specialist lessons this week to see how they are going at the focus of the week, since attending specialist lessons often requires transitioning around the school. It was pleasing to see the positive and respectful manner in which our students move through the school, showing great care for others’ learning.
Many of our Year 4 classes have participated in their Italian mask making activity this week, with some brilliant creativity on display. Thank you to Señora Lammertsma for organising such a fun, cultural activity for Italian!
On Thursday afternoon, Year 3 and 4 will have their ‘Stay and Play’ afternoon between 2.45pm and 3.30pm. We are so looking forward to connecting with families during this time. We hope to see many of you there!

Have a super week

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
Thank you to all of the wonderful classes that have invited me into their classroom over the last week. It was a pleasure celebrating the learning that is occurring in each of the classrooms. I loved working with some students in 5B as they examined open-ended, problem solving questions that had a real world element. It was great listening to students collaborate as they planned out the dimensions for a classroom in our new building and use mathematical language to discuss and defend their selection.
I also had the opportunity to collaborate with students in 5L as they participated in a Rally Coach activity and taught their peers how to order fractions. I loved the connections between the students as they taught each other and deepened their own understanding of fractions.
In 6T it was great observing students consider the use of a variety of sentence types to help ensure their narrative is entertaining and engaging and then to represent their learning on the Bump It Up Wall – these resources will help their peers bump up their work. Finally I loved celebrating the writing that has occurred in 5P. I had the opportunity to read some great “show, don’t tell”, descriptive writing. Well done Year 5 and 6!

Robo-Olympics
Our Robotics team travelled to Moreton Downs State School where we learnt how to code our EV3 robots to joust, play tug of war and even sumo wrestle! Some events and code use different sensors to navigate the arena so we discovered how the light and depth sensors could change the robots' actions. This immersion day was great to help us learn how to code and build the best robot for these three events, so we can compete against other schools in the ROBOlympics next term!

Learning and Practising Number Facts!
At MHSS we place a high value on students learning and knowing their number facts. Number facts are simple addition, subtraction, multiplication or division number sentences. They are the number sentences that students are expected to ‘just know’.
‘Just knowing’ these facts is not easy as there are so many to learn. Because of this, it is important that students have strategies for calculating simple number facts, while they learn and become more fluent with them. Therefore, we prioritise a strategy-focussed approach to learning number facts, whereby students have the opportunity to practise their facts through games and activities, but are also explicitly taught how to find an answer when they don’t know it.
Why strategy-focussed?
It is important that children develop their number sense as well as fluency. Some children (and adults!) are able to quickly recall answers to mathematical questions, but are unable to explain how or why it works. Developing number sense helps children understand this and apply that knowledge across a range of contexts.
Students practise their number facts regularly at school. Ask them to teach you a game they have learned and join in the fun!
Caring for the environment
Sadly this week we have had several books returned to the Hub that are wet. Unfortunately there is no way to fix these books and we need to remove them from our Hub collection. Don’t forget that a plastic library bag is a great way to ensure that we are caring for our books. Library bags can be purchased from the Uniform shop or students are welcome to use any kind of plastic or fabric bag.
Accelerated Reader
This week we celebrate the extraordinary efforts of Ipshitha who has been working hard on AR throughout all of her time at Mango Hill. She has worked consistently up through the levels and has recently reached 9.0. This level is the very top of AR and we are very proud of Ipshitha and her efforts with reading and comprehension. This doesn’t mean that Ipshitha will stop reading – it just means that she can now read any books from any AR level. I wonder what she will read next? Congratulations Ipshitha!
Have a fantastic week

Pine Rivers District Sporting Trials (10-12yr Old’s)
Pine Rivers District School Sport offers 10-12 Year old students the opportunity to compete at Metropolitan North trials and carnivals, with the possibility of selection into teams competing at State events. Students must be nominated by their school in order to attend a district trial or carnival.
Students who express an interest to trial can collect forms from our PE office. They will be given the Pine Rivers District forms and the relevant trial information. Completed district forms are to be returned to the PE office by the due date. Once the forms are collated, students will be nominated for the trial. Forms are then handed back to students and must then be taken to the coach/manager at the District Trials. Students will NOT be allowed to trial if district forms are not handed in completed. Unless specifically organised by the school, it is the parents’ responsibility to transport students to and from district trials.
Most Pine Rivers District trials are limited to students turning 11 or 12 years of age and who are considered at a high level in the sport e.g. Div. 1 or A Grade. Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming trials however are open for students turning 10, 11 and 12 years of age. Sports that students are able to trial for include;

- Basketball
- Cricket
- Football (Soccer)
- Golf
- Hockey
- Netball
- Rugby League
- Rugby Union
- Softball
- Squash

Mango Hill can nominate up to three students for each district sport trial. If more than three students wish to be nominated Mango Hill will select the three best candidates for the trial. The selection of these students may be either based on past performances/current club form or through a selection trial at school.
If you are interested in your child trialling for Pine Rivers District more information can be obtained from the Mango Hill State School newsletter, with regular trial updates listed. You may also obtain trial information from the Pine Rivers District School Sport Website https://prdss1012yr.teamapp.com/?_webpage=v1 or Mr Nick Hills - nhill96@eq.edu.au
