Deepen Connection and Clarity by Design
Our 2022 Explicit Improvement Agenda will build on the work we did in 2021 to Deepen Connection and Clarity by Design.
What does this mean?
- We want to build connection and positive relationships with and between staff, students and their families. We know when students feel connected to their school and have a strong sense of wellbeing, they perform at their best. We are further exploring how we can build these connections.
- We want to provide clarity for students so they clearly know what aspects of the Australian Curriculum they are learning, provide feedback so they know how they are going and what they can do to improve. Further embedding our Lesson Design framework will engage students in deeper learning.
- We want our staff to make clever, precise choices ‘by design’ about the teaching strategies they use so that Every Student at MHSS can succeed!
2022 Student Leaders
This week I had the privilege of presenting our 2022 Student Leaders with their badge on our virtual assembly to be shown on Friday. These students went through a rigorous process of election at the end of last year and will do a fantastic job leading the way for our students. They have been at the gate each morning, welcoming other students and families and ensuring they are great role models for every student.
Next week we will present our 2022 Student Councillors who are representing younger classes.
We look forward to a more formal ceremony for all our 2022 Student Leaders once COVID restrictions ease.
Congratulations to all students elected into their new roles!

2022 Costs for Parents
Please find below the draft ‘Costs for parents for 2022’. As we have delayed the P & C Meeting until 28 February, these costs have not yet been presented for approval. However, I wanted to get this draft out to parents as soon as possible as some parents may like to plan their budget for the school year. We have done our best to present accurate costs to assist you and will confirm these after the P & C Meeting.
Have a wonderful week

Welcome to our Team Mango – We all Belong! section. We have a new look, streamlined newsletter section for you. In this section we will celebrate the diversity and inclusion of all students in our school and how we explicitly teach and design processes to ensure all students can succeed. This week … learning environments. Did you know that our teachers carefully create their physical classroom environments to support learning and to engage and include all their students? You will hear our teachers talk about keeping their environment “pretty useful” rather than just “pretty”. What you see around the room is carefully selected to support and celebrate student learning. Classrooms include areas for learning from the teacher, areas to learn and collaborate with their classmates and areas that offer opportunities for individual time.
Exciting news … to mark our tenth year, Mango Hill State School commissioned a song writer to write a school song. We started this process last year when our student councillors told us what they think would be important to include in a school song. We captured their thinking and our song writer worked hard to hold true to our students’ vision. Your child will start hearing and learning our school song this term. Our school song is called The Mango Hill Way.

Focus of the Week
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday, is “Care Class Expectations and Team Building”. This focus will continue in classrooms throughout the following week. Students will be participating in cooperative team activities, that will allow them to show manners, take turns and play fairly.
We use the Four Cares to help us
- when I care for self at school by following instructions
- when I care for others by showing manners, taking turns and playing fairly
- when I care for my learning I always do my best in Care Class
- when I care for the school environment by taking care of the resources in my classroom/care class room.
Why is team building important for kids? It ensures individuals don’t just focus on themselves but make sure entire groups function well. The advantages of team building activities are many; kids improve problem-solving, listening, leadership, and creative thinking.
Classic Team Building games
- Human Knot Kids Version. The famous human knot game is often tried with adults in co-working environments, but it is actually quite a fun and useful kids team building ...
- Traffic Lights! This is a classic team building kids’ game which can be modified to increase the chemistry and team building between kids.
- Forehead Dots. This is a really easy activity game to set up, but really hard for kids to solve! ...
The following www site will have further information for fun games to play at home
https://www.unicefkidpower.org/fun-team-building-activities-for-kids/
CCTV is now operational in our school
The Department of Education is committed to creating and maintaining safe and secure learning environments that support the provision of high quality education for teaching and learning. Schools face a number of security related threats and must develop and implement appropriate strategies to manage these risks. Closed circuit television (CCTV) can be an effective tool to help a school to meet its obligation to provide a safe and secure environment for students and staff, and meet its duty of care obligations.
It is important to note that installation of CCTV at Queensland state schools is intended as a strategy to mitigate and manage security risks. It is not intended to replace traditional methods of student supervision, or as a method of workplace surveillance. The use of CCTV cameras in schools will almost always involve the potential collection, storage, use and disclosure of ‘personal information’ and is therefore subject to obligations as set out in section 426 of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006 (Qld) and the Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld), in relation to the use and disclosure of non-student personal information and collection, storage and security.
When footage of an individual (students, staff, visitors, or intruders) is captured through CCTV, and a person with the necessary knowledge is able to reasonably ascertain the identity of an individual from the footage, the footage potentially contains personal information. If the person in the footage is identifiable, the footage will reveal information about that individual. For example, that the person was present at that particular location at a particular date and time. Accordingly, any CCTV footage will potentially contain personal information, and the obligations in the IP Act or under section 426 of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006 (Qld) (EGPA) will apply. A CCTV system, and any data collected through its use, will be managed strictly in accordance with the CCTV use in schools procedure, and all relevant legislative requirements.
Personal information must be adequately protected against misuse, loss and unauthorised access, or unlawful use and disclosure. This means protecting stored camera footage and protecting areas where monitoring of camera surveillance takes place. These include but are not limited to:
- Suitable storage for digital records;
- Encrypting any footage stored on portable storage devices and Deleting or writing over footage that is no longer required
- Limiting the number of staff who can access footage and/or control rooms to those in the Campus Leadership Team for whom it is appropriate, and having a standardised, auditable process for when access is granted;
- Establishing clear protocols for responding to requests for access to, or copies of, footage (for example, determining who has authority to release footage, and how copies of footage are to be distributed).
Learning the "Blueprint" at MHSS
We’re well underway in our first year of school and we’re working very hard to learn the “blueprint” of how things are done at Mango Hill. Huge thanks to our Team Mango families and friends for showing us the way!
We know…
*when we say goodbye to our caregivers in the mornings, they will return to collect us in the afternoons (thank you so much for not waiting outside the classrooms in the mornings or afternoons, much appreciated!)
*all the different play areas and where to line up
*how to unpack our own bags and where to put our lunches
*the names of our new classmates.
We are learning…
*how to draw images, with details
*what it means to be a 4* learner and do our best
*all the rules for our specialist lessons, like PE, dance, music, Italian and STEM
*how to take turns and share, in the classroom and the playground.
Hats, water bottles, lunch containers…
These are the items regularly misplaced in Prep! My personal, parent tip is to always have more than one hat on hand; this way, your child can still play out in the playground, while the search occurs for the lost hat. We do help with the search, but we aren’t miracle workers. Most of the time, misplaced hats do turn up, after a period of time as they’ve been taken home accidentally by another child and returned once a parent realises.
Each of my own children has two school hats. One of my children rarely needs the back up hat. The other one… both hats are in constant rotation! For us, it’s an easy way to ensure we get out the door on time in the morning with our stress levels intact and playtime is not disrupted for my little one. We also wear our hats to school because if mummy sees it on their heads, she knows they have it with them.
Prep iPADs
We’ve had a few questions about iPADs in Prep and just wanted to remind everyone that Preps aren’t asked to bring their iPADs to school until the second semester. Towards the end of Semester 1 (in June) we will send the ePAL information home again to you, with instructions about how to connect personal devices to our school wifi network. We would say to parents to wait to purchase an iPAD, should you not have one already and plan to purchase one; and wait to buy the latest model that you can afford, when the time comes. This way, iPAD updates from Apple enabling the device to work well for school, will last as long as possible. Once Apple cease updates for devices, they become difficult to use at school. Welcome to Year 1!
This week we in Year 1 we have dived into guided reading. Guided reading occurs when a teacher works with small groups of students who are at a similar point in their reading development. Each student reads, softly or silently, the same text individually. The teacher helps the students to decode and work out the unknown words. They also guide a discussion around the text’s meaning.
Our Year 1 teachers do a wonderful job guiding our students to work out unknown words. They teach the students to use a range of strategies when they come to words they are stuck on. Using these same strategies at home can really help your little one develop their confidence. Below are our whole school reading strategies used in every classroom.
Top tips reading at home
- Explore the book with your child by looking through the book and discuss what is happening in the pictures.
- Invite your child to read the book to you. If your child gets stuck on a word, try:
PAUSE - Wait five to ten seconds for your child to work it out on their own.
PROMPT- Using the reading strategies, encourage your child to have a go at working out the unknown word. If your child cannot work out the word after three clues, tell him/her the word- reading should be fun, not a chore!
PRAISE - Listen attentively and encourage your child!
- After your child has read, ask them to retell the story/information to you.

Super start!
We are thrilled with the confident way our Year 2 students have settled into their new classes and life in Year 2. As well as getting to know their class teacher, new classmates, class routines and processes, they are also becoming familiar with Ms Olsen (Inclusive Learning Teacher), Ms Allen, Ms Rayne and Ms Brown (our teacher aides) and me. We are building positive connections with your children. We are continuing to share a social story daily so we all know about the area and the expectations when we play there.
Learning in Year 2
Of course, learning is always our focus. Our students have completed some pre-testing over last week and the first days of this week so that our teachers and the rest of the team understand each learner’s next steps. Students had their first go at writing a recount. In Year 2 students create texts, drawing on their own experiences, their imagination and information they have learnt. Your children will be learning how to recount events including who, what, where, when and why. Students will use time connectives eg then, after that, in their writing. They will choose words that convey an overall feeling eg exciting, joyous, nerve-wracking. Students will add pictures that match the feeling.

Incursion
You will soon receive information about our Year 2 Term 1 incursion. Reptile Adventures will be visiting our school in Week 8 so students can experience reptiles and learn about the changes they undertake in their lives. This also provides our students with an exciting adventure to recount in their writing.
I have included some photos below from Year 2 this week!
Have a great week

Please give me my chair back!
This week 3C were shocked to come back after play and find that all their chairs had gone missing. For some unusual reason Ms Curran thought they didn’t want or need chairs anymore. This left 3C feeling very confused. Once the students of 3C realised what had happened they busily started brainstorming reasons as to why their chairs were so important to them and that they really needed them back. It was wonderful to see the passion and determination in the 3C students who wrote passionately to Ms Curran convincing her that chairs were a really important part of the classroom environment. I was so glad to see them returned to the class, as where the students.

Kids Club Donations
We are seeking any donations of toy cars, simple board games, puzzles or Lego for our Kids Club. If you have any resources you are willing to donate to our Year 3 students we would be very grateful.

Year 4 News
What a week of learning we are having in Year 4! Our classes have quickly gotten to know each other through the first week of school, with our teachers working hard on building connections between students and themselves. With this important foundation set up, we are seeing our students dive into the learning and taking on the new challenges that face them in Year 4.
This week I have seen students sharing their writing pieces with each other, begin Guided Reading groups, practise number facts, learn about 4 and 5-digit numbers, and learn about what plants need to grow. As always, our teachers are working hard to engage our students in the learning, collaborating to deliver high impact teaching and learning experiences to our students. One of my favourite learning experiences this week was from 4T during their café writing lesson. I happened to walk in while students were sharing their persuasive texts on why Miss Turnbull should give them each a Zooper Dooper on Friday afternoon. We have some very clever, convincing and funny authors in 4T!

At MHSS, we have a range of clubs available at play time for our students. Some of the clubs for Year 4 include:
- Choir
- iPad club
- Gardening club
- Reading club
- Chess
- Robotics
- Lego
- Chalk Drawing
- Drama
- Animation
- African Drumming
- Sports clubs.
There really is something for everyone! If students are looking for something to do at break time, we highly recommend checking out a lunchtime club.
Have a super week

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
It has been a pleasure getting into classrooms this week to really engage with students regarding the learning in Year 5 and 6. This week I had the privilege to work in 5K as Miss Balaam and Mrs Penrose co-taught, each targeting a different part of the writing scale. Both teachers worked with different students to really focus on their next best learning move. I loved working with 6V as they started their Guided Reading work by focussing on developing students ability to answer ‘think and search’ questions. Finally, I had the opportunity to be part of a democratic conversation in 6D as they applied the principles they learnt in HASS to vote on a class reward system. Great work Year 5 and 6!

Teamwork in action - Drama Club
To provide further connections between students Mrs Peno facilitates our Drama Club every Tuesday second break in the 5P classroom. Senior Drama Club is open to all year 3-6 students who love being creative and role playing. During Drama Club students engage in a variety of drama games and improvisation role plays.
Students who have been attending Drama Group this term are enjoying using their imaginations to create their own characters based on an allocated costume item. After introducing themselves in role to the group, they then worked with others to create a role play by coming up with a plot in which all of their characters interact. Their role plays have been super entertaining!
Have a good week

Learning in Maths
Students have begun developing their mathematical understanding, fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills in number, place value, operations and patterns. Students are engaging in tasks that require them to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by using mathematical strategies to make informed decisions and solve problems efficiently.
Please see some photos below of students using the power of mathematical reasoning in tasks like ‘Destroyer’, ‘Discuss and Defend’ and ‘Rate the Response’.

Rapid Recall
Students in all year levels have been having fun participating in Rapid Recall sessions. This occurs three times a week for 10 minutes. Students work through questions quickly to consolidate critical content in Mathematics and use many ways to represent their ideas, from using a whiteboard, drawing, singing, and reciting. Teachers use this opportunity to check for understanding and to identify how they can further support their students. It is quick and fun, and our students look forward to their Rapid Recall lessons each week. Please see below some photos from 6R and 6B who invited me in this week!

Hub Borrowing
Don’t forget that the Hub is open before school (from 8.15am) and after school (until 3pm) for any students that would like to borrow a book. Each class also has a special borrowing time and there are lunchtime clubs for students to visit the Hub or borrow. Monday is Year 3; Tuesday Year 4/5/6 and Fridays is Years 1/2. To really ‘care for the environment’ including our precious books we would like everyone who borrows to have a library bag. This can be a special Mango Hill bag (purchased from the Uniform shop) or any kind of plastic or material bag. We look forward to seeing everyone soon.
Volunteers
If you have a few hours to spare, the Hub is always looking for willing volunteers to contact our new books. We are happy to provide you with a small (or large) pile of books as well as a roll of contact so you can complete this task at your pace. Pop on down to see Wendy in the Hub if you are interested in helping out.
Hub display
To support our Year 6 students as they begin to learn about government as part of their HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) unit, this week in the Hub we have a special display from the Museum focussing on democracy. Pop on down to have a look and learn some interesting facts about the ways in which Australia is governed.
Have a fantastic week

Pine Rivers District Sporting Trials (10-12yr Old’s)
Pine Rivers District School Sport offers 10-12 Year old students the opportunity to compete at Metropolitan North trials and carnivals, with the possibility of selection into teams competing at State events. Students must be nominated by their school in order to attend a district trial or carnival.
Students who express an interest to trial can collect forms from our PE office. They will be given the Pine Rivers District forms and the relevant trial information. Completed district forms are to be returned to the PE office by the due date. Once the forms are collated, students will be nominated for the trial. Forms are then handed back to students and must then be taken to the coach/manager at the District Trials. Students will NOT be allowed to trial if district forms are not handed in completed. Unless specifically organised by the school, it is the parents’ responsibility to transport students to and from district trials.
Most Pine Rivers District trials are limited to students turning 11 or 12 years of age and who are considered at a high level in the sport e.g. Div. 1 or A Grade. Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming trials however are open for students turning 10, 11 and 12 years of age. Sports that students are able to trial for include the following.
