Yarn & Eats
It was lovely to connect with our families who identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander this week at the Yarn and Eats. We are currently getting a mural painted in the Hall and the students were able to contribute with a handprint. Thank you to all families who joined with us.
Take a look at these lovely photos of some students helping with the mural.

Congratulations Year 5 Leaders
Last week Mr Winney and I were delighted to interview over 50 Year 5 students who had completed their Leadership passport. We heard their pride in the school, how they enact our values and why they will be great student leaders next year.
After conducting an initial vote with all Year 5 students, we considered these votes and our interviews to shortlist 31 students. This was very challenging with so many great role models in Year 5. Congratulations to all the students on their conduct and efforts. Students who missed out on being shortlisted will be in the role of Mango Mentors and have a leadership role to play next year.
Shortlisted students will present speeches next week to the current Year 4 and 5 students. After these speeches, the children and staff will vote on the students they believe will make great leaders. This will decide our 2022 School Captains, Performing Arts Captains, Sport Captains, Sustainability captains, Reconciliation Leaders and Diversity Leaders.
Parents are welcome to join us for these speeches at the following times.
- Girls presenting Tuesday 23 November at 8.40 -9.30am in Gigum Hall
- Boys presenting Thursday 25 November at 8.40 - 9.30am in Gigum Hall
We will announce all leadership positions at the Year 5 Awards Parade on Tuesday 7 December. Best wishes to all students involved.

Focus of the Week
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Sun and Water Safety”. We will be consolidating this focus throughout next week.
Summer is here so it’s a great time to remind students about sun safety and the five S’s of summer slip, slop, slap, seek and slide. Most of us know we need to slip on sun-protective clothing, slop on SPF30 (or higher) broad spectrum water-resistant sunscreens, slap on a broad-brimmed hat, seek shade during peak UV exposure times and slide on sunglasses. It’s important to also be aware of heat related illness, and be sure to ‘sip’ hydrating fluids to prevent dehydration.
Students will also be learning about how to be safe around water. They will discuss key areas:
- play and walk safely around and in water
- let adults know where you are
- be supervised or in a safe area.
A Great catchy tune for kids to remember can be found on the following link:
End of Year Concert
Just a reminder that End of Year Concert tickets are now on sale through this Try Booking link https://www.trybooking.com/BVNJL
Tickets are capped at 3 per family per session for the first round to ensure that all families have the opportunity to see their child/ren perform. Tickets are on sale until Wednesday 24 November 5:00pm. Tickets sales will re-open on Thursday 25 November at 5:00pm and you will be able to purchase unlimited tickets until sold out. Please note that seating is not allocated and we will have ushers on the day directing you where to sit when you arrive.
A link to download a video of the concert is also included in the cost of the tickets and will be emailed out to families shortly after the event.
If you have any question or concerns please call the school on 3482 8111 or email Jasmine Benfer- jbenf10@eq.edu.au.
The End of the Year is in Sight
Well, if I’m dragging my tail to school each morning, I can only imagine how our youngest learners feel!
Over the past few weeks of assessment they have been working so, so hard. The cognitive load has been high. Their brains have been working in overdrive. They are physically and mentally exhausted!
How do we manage as parents? As much outside time as possible. Nature helps us to reset. In my own house, we’re trying longer baths, much less screen time and as much outside time as possible. Those end of the day meltdowns are more frequent, as they tire. And as adults, you can understand it too - how many of us are at our very best when we are exhausted? Do we bounce back like roses and sunshine or are we snappy crocodiles?
As things wind down for the year, many things continue. Reading continues for our Preps, right to the end of the year. Writing and maths contine too. We want them to leave our Prep year in the very best place possible to tackle the learning in Year 1.
Have a lovely week - try to get some outdoors time for yourselves too!

Lunch Time Clubs
So much excitement! Beading club has become one of our most popular lunchtime clubs this term. Every Wednesday, first break, students eagerly head to the Junior Undercover Area to meet Mrs Orole ready to create beautiful patterns with the beads. Students in the club have been modelling great care for others as they share the resources, take turns and create gorgeous colourful necklaces and bracelets. As part of the club the students also have a shared responsibility of ensuring they care for the environment by helping Mrs Orole pack away at the end of the break. It has been wonderful to see all those smiling faces join Mrs Orole at beading club each week.
In the upcoming weeks, as we near the end of term Mrs Orole will be incorporating some Christmas craft into her club. Students do not need to sign up to take part, they just turn up and join in. Please share with your child that this great club is available to them every Wednesday. Don’t forget our other clubs on offer this term include - Matchbox car club, origami, Beyblades, art and craft
Have an excellent week.

Year 3 News
Our Year 3 classes this week are working hard through assessments and representing the range of learning that they have participated in during Semester 2. In particular, I have had the opportunity to see some amazing poetry as well as students demonstrating their understanding of money.
This term’s English unit for Year 3 was on writing a poem to describe a place. I’ve seen and heard poems written about airports, the beach, haunted houses, creepy forests and busy shopping centres. I have been blown away by the way our students carefully select language for effect within their poems and can hold a consistent mood in their writing. We have such talented writers at Mango Hill!
This week I had the privilege of observing a lesson in 3J, where Mr Grima challenged his class to work in pairs and create a flag with multiple lines of symmetry. Each student within the pair had to create one half of the flag so that when they connected the two halves, the flag was symmetrical. It was wonderful to observe 3J problem solving together, showing persistence and determination as they completed this challenge.
Upcoming events
Over the next few weeks we have lots going on in Year 3 including swimming carnival, The Four Cares Celebration and for some of our classes, we also have the end of year concert. Consent forms have been sent out for all of these events. If you are yet to receive one, please let your child’s classroom teacher know.
Playtime
At Mango Hill, we are so lucky to have a range of lunchtime clubs on offer. This week, I visited students at gardening club as they cared for the environment by watering the plants. Mrs Duffey also found lots of fresh vegetables ready for picking including corn, peas and bok choy. What a talented bunch of gardeners we have!

Moderation in Year 4
Our Year 4 teachers are proud of the efforts all our students are applying to their assessment pieces over this term, but especially over these weeks where a range of assessment pieces are being finalised. This afternoon, Year 4 teachers will meet for Twilight Moderation where we ensure that our judgements about level of student achievement are consistent and correct. The teachers are continually collaborating to share strategies and best teaching practices.
Learning in Italian
This term, Year 4 has focused on the story of Little Red Riding Hood in Italian, sequencing the story and dialogue. They described the wolf in Italian and then created a new villain for the story. Students are enjoying the Italian version of the story and comparing it to the English version, and have been super excited to create a new villain.
Friendship in Year 4
Our Student Welfare Officer has worked with most classes and their teacher in Year 4 to deliver some self-care and friendship learning. In our October Student Survey, 99% of students in Year 4 said they had friends who care about them at school. Congratulations on all the kindness and friendship your children extend to each other. Of course our goal is 100% and we will keep supporting our students in their friendships with each other.
Have a fantastic week.

Welcome to High School Year 6
Next week our Year 6 students begin their Welcome to High School transition activities to help prepare them for and alleviate the anxiety around their transition to secondary school. Each year during Weeks 8 and 9 of Term 4 our Year 6 teaching team adopt a secondary school model in which each teacher teaches a specific subject. Teachers take ownership of a particular subject and develop a mini-learning program aimed at increasing engagement. Students are mixed up into other classes to allow them the opportunity to connect with a variety of peers. They are provided with a timetable which helps them to learn how to move from class to class and how to organise themselves for different subjects. It is hoped that by engaging students in the secondary curriculum and exposing them to processes typical of a secondary school that they will be excited about their move to high school. We also hope this will support students who are experiencing some anxiety to prepare for high school within the safe environment of the familiar faces of Mango Hill State School.
Gala Day
This Friday is our final Gala Day for 2021. Thank you to all of the work of Mr Hills and Mr Newell who work hard in providing this opportunity to our students. I look forward to celebrating the success of our teams. More importantly each Gala Day it makes me proud to hear the many stories of our students displaying great care for others and being great ambassadors of our values, especially teamwork and commitment. Good luck Year 5 and 6!
Have a terrific week.

World Diabetes Day
Last weekend (14 November) marked World Diabetes Day. World Diabetes Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of diabetes as a global public health issue and to also raise awareness of what needs to be done, collectively and individually, for better prevention, diagnosis and management of the condition. Approximately 11,000 Australian children live with diabetes each day. If you wish to read more about diabetes, below are some informative websites.

Farewell to Ms Ann Stewart
Our school has been lucky enough to have Ms Stewart as our EAL/D teacher for the past two years. It has been a pleasure to watch the warm connections she built with students as she supported their learning. Ms Stewart is retiring and her final day with us will be 23 November. After a long career with Education Queensland, always putting students at the centre of her work, we wish her a happy retirement.
Have a great week

Code Camp
Code Camp is excited to be back at Mango Hill with their fun and engaging after-school coding program for Term 1 2022 starting Wednesday 2 February and the new drone program starting Thursday 3 February, both running from 2:50 PM - 4:05 PM.
Your child will design games, jam-packed with awesome features including, zombies, invisibility cloaks, and so much more. And then the real fun begins, as they use coding and logic, from drag and drop to JavaScript, to connect all the elements and bring their games to life!
The Code Camp after-school curriculum is designed to ensure that all children progress in their learning and advance their coding knowledge week to week and caters to the variety of abilities within the classroom. There are always heaps of new features and concepts to learn which your child will love.
Plus…DC Super Heroes are back at Code Camp after-school for Term 1! Your child can now design, code and create their own BATMAN, WONDER WOMAN or SUPERMAN game.
Drone After-school, powered by Drone Legends, is Code Camp’s latest hands-on technology program. It is the coolest intersection of STEM learning and fun where kids will code a flight path and watch their drone take off, then navigate through an obstacle course made by them. They'll learn about drone tech, movie making, and discover how drones can save the world by fighting bushfires, rescuing koalas and loads more!
Code Camp will be hosting their popular Kahoot trivia quiz each week.
To enrol your child, visit codecamp.com.au/mangohillss. There is an Early Bird sale running for the next week using the code AutumnEB15."
Have a great week

AR Millionaires
At this time of the year we are always excited to welcome a group of eager readers into our AR Millionaire Club. Congratulations to Isobel who last week reached 1 million words. This is a fabulous achievement and we are very proud of Isobel.
We were also excited that Aliyah reached her million words this year, following up with last year’s million as well! Aliyah is also striving to reach 9.0 – the last level of AR at Mango Hill. We look forward to celebrating this goal with her in the coming weeks.
This week Lucy has also reached her AR goal, reading 2 million words this year. Lucy has demonstrated commitment and persistence all year and we are very proud of her achievements. We especially loved that the last book on her way to 2 million was ‘Little House on the Prairie’ – one of Ms Holm’s favourites but also one of her mum’s favourites. Look at the photo carefully to see just how well-loved the book is!
And last but not least for this week, we congratulate Ngan who has read 3 million words this year! This is an outstanding achievement and we are all very impressed by your commitment and dedication.
Well done Isobel, Aliyah, Lucy and Ngan. We are very pleased to add your photos to our special AR display and to celebrate such dedication and commitment to reading!
Don’t forget that if you are striving to reach your goal, there is still time! Keep reading and quizzing!

Hub Resources
As Term 4 and our school year starts to wrap up, we need to begin the long process of returning all of our Hub resources. Students should now begin to return all library books to the Hub. AR students may borrow for one more week, but for most students we must now begin to find all of our library books and return these as soon as possible. For those students working on a specific goal (e.g. to reach 1 million words or AR 9.0) they should pop in to see me in the Hub and we can easily extend the timelines.
Don’t forget that for all ‘lost’ or ‘damaged’ books we ask families to replace these. For AR books, which are expensive and difficult to source, we will need to ask families to replace the lost book with the same book. For all other books, we ask families to replace the lost book with a book of their choosing. The best idea though at this time of the year is to continue to look for the lost books – we often find them in tidy tubs, under beds, between thicker books, at the bottom of school bags and even at Grandma’s place… so let’s all look carefully over the next few weeks and see if we can find all of the outstanding loans.
Volunteers
We are looking forward to adding lots more books to our Hub collection in 2022. To prepare for this Wendy has been busy cataloguing and processing a mountain of books. These are now all in need of contacting. If you have a few spare hours or would like to escape the madness of Christmas shopping, pop in to the Hub and we can help you with a small (or large) pile of books to contact. We look forward to meeting some volunteers soon!
Happy reading

Big PE Dates in Term 4
A reminder of our big dates this term in PE:
- 19 November (Friday, Week 7) – Gala Day (Year 5-6)
- 2 December (Thursday, Week 9) – MHSS Swimming Carnival (8-9yrs)
- 3 December (Friday, Week 9) – MHSS Swimming Carnival (10-12yrs).
MHSS Swimming Carnival Information for Years 3-6
Later this term our MHSS Swimming Carnival for all Year 3-6 students will be held. Our goal is to ensure all students can participate in a variety of swimming races and have an enjoyable day with their peers.
In 2020, we have made the decision to split our carnival over 2 days. Students in Years 3-6 who are turning 8 and 9 years old in 2021 (born 2012 and 2013) will compete on the first day, which will be Thursday 2 December (Week 9). Students in Years 3-6 turning 10, 11 and 12 years old in 2021 (born 2009, 2010 and 2011) will compete on the second day, which will be Friday 3 December (Week 9).
Students compete at sporting events, including at representative levels, in age groups, not in year levels. Therefore, our carnival days run to align with this process.
Below is the initial parent information for both days. Students will receive more information at school in the coming weeks. This will include a permission and race nomination form, which will need to be returned for your son/daughter to attend. There is no cost for parents associated with the swimming carnival days.
If you need to contact us regarding any sporting issue at MHSS, feel free to send an email to Mr Nick Hills (nhill96@eq.edu.au) or Mr Tyson Newell (tnewe20@eq.edu.au).
