Congratulations to the students who participated in the Lions public speaking final last night. Well done Michaela, Ngan, Aliyah, Ipshita, and Areesha who made fantastic speeches about heroes who inspire them. We were incredibly proud of them! Special congratulations to Ngan who won second place in Year 6 and Aressha who won third place in Year 5.
A huge thanks to Mrs Koch who supported our students and to Ms Balaam who was on the judging panel.

Focus of the Week
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Problem Solving in the playground”. We will be consolidating this focus throughout next week.
Throughout week 3, teachers will be teaching students about strategies they can use when a problem happens in the playground. This topic has the purpose of developing care for self and care for others. Our students learn about solving problems with peers by using the High 5. Below are some strategies students can use.
- Talk Friendly: Use a calm voice, maintain eye contact, confident body language.
- Talk firmly: Use an assertive voice, slightly raised, tell them to stop it.
- Ignore: Do not make eye contact, count to five in your head slowly, take deep breaths.
- Walk away: Stand tall, head up high, walk to a safety zone (teacher).
- Report: Walk away and tell a staff member.

CF Day Success
Thank you so much to everyone for their donations to our Go Red for CF day last Friday. We will keep the online donations open for another week to give families more time to raise the $40 to go in the draw to win the signed footy boots from Daniel Rich (Brisbane lions). We have currently raised around $7000 which is fantastic but still a long way from our target of $40,000.
To the amazing kids at our school, seeing your smiling faces on the day made it so worth while. A big thank you to our teachers and the student leaders for your help. Also a huge thank you to my volunteers on the day. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Lastly I want to say a huge thank you to my sponsors. Without your help this event wouldn’t have raised as much money as it has. 100% of money raised is being donated to Cystic Fibrosis Qld. Please support these businesses when you can. Some of them don’t even have children at the school.

Welcome to Week 2 Prep Friends and Family!
Something that I’ve noticed and that the Prep teachers have asked me to specifically mention in the newsletter, is the amount of Prep students who arrive late each morning. We understand that on the odd morning, things don’t go to plan and you may run late – we aren’t talking about these one off times. We notice that there is a group of students in every class, who arrive after 8:30am each morning, sometimes not until 9:00am.
When students arrive late, it is very challenging to manage; for the child who is late, for the teacher and for the rest of the class. It means the teacher is mid-teaching and finds it hard to welcome your child properly and settle them into the learning. They have to repeat instructions and organise the necessary equipment for them to participate. Other children in the class cease their learning because they are excited to see your child arrive; they may find it challenging to turn their attention back to their own learning. And of course, for your child, arriving late can make it hard to settle into the day. They are unsure of what to do, have missed the morning routine and have missed the morning connection time with friends.
We like our Prep friends to arrive at 8:15am so they have some time before instruction begins to settle into the school day, organise their own equipment, chat to their friends and connect with their teacher. This time might not seem so important for an adult (especially someone like me who arrives exactly on time for a meeting to start, and usually not one second before!), but for our youngest students, the chat time with friends and the settling in time for the day, is crucial. It’s also part of their learning; that ability to self-regulate and be ready to learn takes practice!
We thank you in advance for supporting your child to be at school and ready to learn. We know how the mornings are tricky in a busy household! If you are finding it difficult, please speak with your teacher or come and speak with me. We have plenty of ideas to share about how to make the mornings run a bit more smoothly.
Next week is school photos. Make sure your child is in full school uniform for their first ever school photo!
Have a lovely week.

Warmer Weather
Thank you to all our families for making sure all our little friends have been coming to school in full school uniform. It really is lovely seeing them take such pride in being part of Team Mango. With the weather warming up, it is really important to remind your child to be wearing their school hat on the way to school or being sure it is packed in their bag. Please check they have their name and class written on the inside so if it does go missing, it is more likely to make it back to them.
Speaking of the weather warming up, now is the time for drink bottles! I like to freeze my child’s water bottle each night so she has cold water all day long!
Writers Café
This term in Year 1 and 2 we are practising our everyday writing skills including generating creative ideas, spelling, punctuation and using descriptive language. If you are looking for a ‘could do activity’ at home, introducing your child into journal writing is a great way to encourage writing for fun at home. They can write about anything they would like a short story, poem, about their weekend, game or movie review, whatever interests them. This week Mrs Roberts class wrote about a mystery box. They were very creative in their story writing!
Have an excellent week.

Year 3 News
What a busy start to the term in Year 3! Already we've had PCYC bike safety excursions, swimming lessons, Starlab incursions, CF day and of course, lots of learning.
In English, Year 3 are learning about poetry this term. As a part of this unit they are learning to craft poems that describe a place using a range of language features that create a consistent mood. I have enjoyed reading a range of student’s poems this week and look forward to seeing how they improve throughout the term.
This week I had the privilege of being a part of an authentic learning experience in 3F’s Maths lesson. The students in 3F were using the Mango Munchies Tuckshop menu to select their ideal lunch, calculate the total cost of the lunch and then determine the least number of notes and coins required to pay for it. Some students were even discussing the pros and cons of receiving change. Awesome work 3F!
Year 3 will continue their swimming lessons this Friday. It was wonderful to hear so many students share positive experience with swimming from Week 1! On Monday and Wednesday this week, we had Starlab come along and present to our Year 3 students. As a part of this experience, students were given a virtual tour of the night sky and learned about how day and night occur due to the earth’s rotation.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Lunchtime Club
This week we re-introduced our ‘Wunya Ngulum’ lunchtime club. This club is open to all students in Years 3-6 every Tuesday at first break, to participate in activities linked to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. This week, it was great to see students creating art works of animals and learning about the cultural significance of these animals.

Have a great week.

Bump It Up Walls
Year 4 students are settled and focused on their learning in Week 2. Students and teachers are working together to construct Bump It Up walls. These are references in the classroom where students can self-assess their writing and Math and access visual supports for their next step to “bump it up”. I am including some photos for you. These walls will only continue to develop throughout the units of learning.
Writing Cafe
This term, you may especially hear your child talking about Writing Café. This provides students with regular opportunities to write, responding to prompts, writing a narrative or a persuasive text. The prompts so far have included a mystery “What’s in the Box?” (4D) and a block of chocolate (4C). Students are super engaged in their writing and love being authors.
Camp
We are also doing some final preparations for our Year 4 camp. Two of our teachers, Jess Ferguson and Stevie Vos, visited the camp last term. This week, Ms Ferguson, has been visiting all classes to ensure that students are well-prepared and to alleviate any nerves our students may be feeling. Ms Vos has been ensuring all steps have been taken to support our students’ safety and wellbeing. Remember to check in with your child’s class teacher if you have any concerns.
Uniform Challenge
Finally, thank you for supporting our Uniform Challenge. Year 4 students presented proudly in their correct uniforms, so we recognise all the support you gave at home.

Have a fantastic week.

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
It has been another great week in the classrooms of Year 5 and 6. I had the pleasure of working in 5S this week as they consolidated their understanding of estimating when calculating money. Students participated in a Rally Coach collaborative strategy in which students tutored their partner and talked out their understanding. This assisted in stretching students while also providing students another opportunity to developing their foundational skills when managing money. It was great working with students and listening to their thinking. I am really looking forward in participating in the upcoming Year 5 Market Day maths program. I also had the opportunity to work with students in 6B as they continued to develop their knowledge of contextual vocabulary when analysing the My Place texts. It was great observing students develop their understanding of a different historical period while also consider the text choices they will make for their upcoming diary assessment. Keep up the great work Year 5 and 6!
Year 6 Awards
At the end of each year we present a range of special awards, sponsored by our local members and organisations, to our Year 6 students. These awards recognise the great achievements of our students and celebrates their contribution to our school community. Awards are aligned to our four cares and our values and therefore these awards continue to promote our positive learning culture within our school and is just another way for our Year 6 students to positively influence our school. Attached is a summary of the awards and the process the school leadership and Year 6 team undertake in deciding a winner. I encourage you to discuss these awards with your child and how they can continue to work towards winning the awards. Good luck!
Have a terrific week.

Student Wellbeing
At MHSS, all classroom teachers proactively build student wellbeing through universal practices such as:
- Greeting students by name as they enter the classroom each morning
- Greeting Circle at least twice a week to give students an opportunity to greet each other and build a class community
- Closing school days with “What Went Well” today
- Ready to learn breaks incorporated into leaning to allow movement and social interaction
- Circle Time lead by the classroom teacher once a week
- Care Class each Friday, with the focus reinforced across the week
- Ready to Learn Plans where students identify what supports their own ability to regulate their feelings.
As we follow up our Queensland Mental Health Week focus from Week 1, there’s no better time to explore the ways we all can support wellbeing. If you want to know more, please see (https://www.qldmentalhealthweek.org.au/download-resources/) for a range of free resources available for digital download, including PowerPoint presentations, a flapbook, chatterbox, posters and more to start the conversation at home and the importance of ‘Taking Time for Mental Health’.

MONEY at HOME
This Semester students have been exploring money and financial mathematics. Authentic learning experiences are used to engage students in mathematics and to give them an understanding of a whole range of mathematical concepts. It allows students to appreciate the relevance and usefulness of mathematics and develops students’ abilities to make informed judgements and effective consumer and financial decisions.
Using opportunities around the home to continue this learning outside of school will greatly support your children. Discuss budgets for buying items at the grocery store, have your child count out change required when buying items, create common coin combinations to help them count coin/note collections and have your child develop ‘gift lists’ using catalogues and sticking to a budget. These are just some ideas!
Below is the sequence of learning that happens in each year level for money to help you further with some ideas.
Rapid Recall
Students in all year levels complete Rapid Recall sessions at least 3 times per week during their Maths teaching and learning. The purpose of Rapid Recall is to provide consolidation of previously taught essential maths concepts and skills to shift their knowledge from short-term to long-term memory – thus providing automaticity.
Have a great week.

PRD Cross Country Review Update – MHSS 2021 WINNERS!
We have just been informed from the Pine Rivers District that Mango Hill State School were joint winners in the 2021 Pine Rivers District Cross Country Carnival. Obviously a little disappointing that we have only been notified of this after the event was held early Term 2, however it is still a tremendous achievement by our students and something we are very proud of. MHSS has won both the District Cross Country and the Track and Field Trophies in 2021! Going to be tough to keep that record up but we will give it our best shot!
