Gigum Hall Opening
We are looking forward to our official opening of Gigum Hall on Friday at 9:00am. Deputy Premier Steven Miles and Federal member Luke Howarth will officially open the hall. We will have a range of performances and a final opportunity to look through the amazing art work on display at the Arts Fest. All parents and cares are invited to join us for this exciting morning.
Art Auction
Please support our school by considering making a bid on our Art Auction! There are some wonderful pieces of art that students have worked really hard on. Bids can be made on our facebook page ihttps://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=314200137166057&set=a.314304930488911

NAPLAN Results
Late last week we received our 2021 NAPLAN results. Today students in year 3 and 5 will receive their report so please check your child’s bag. Our results continued to be strong, with further improvements in year 5. Some results in year 3 declined a little and we are working to understand these results. We will analyse the results in detail in the coming weeks and consider additional strategies to ensure a strong focus on literacy and numeracy to meet our commitment of every student succeeding!
Have a wonderful week.
Focus of the Week
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Setting Goals”. We will be consolidating this focus throughout next week.
We will be learning to create smart goals to help us achieve and feel successful. It is hard to achieve something if we don’t have an intention. Teachers will work through with students that the best goals need to be Specific – Measurable –Attainable/Achievable – Realistic and Time bound.
It is important to think about the below questions when setting goals.
- What will you do to achieve the outcome?
- Who might be able to help you?
- Where will this occur?
At Mango Hill we believe goal setting is valuable in all aspects of life. You may like to talk to your child about their current goals.
Crazy Dress Day
Tomorrow we are celebrating all things art and creativity with the Gigum Arts Fest. We invite all students to show off their wild, wacky and creative side with CRAZY DRESS DAY. Crazy hair, crazy socks, or a crazy outfit, let your imagination run wild. Please ensure all Crazy Dress outfits are sun safe and school appropriate with sleeves, enclosed shoes, and a hat for play times. Student leaders will visit classrooms to celebrate the student's creativity and collect a gold coin donation.
Last Call to Visit the Gigum Arts Fest
I really hope everyone has had the chance to visit Gigum Arts Fest either with their Prep class during the day or after school. You have one last chance to visit! Tomorrow afternoon, Gigum Hall is open between 2:45pm and 4:00pm, for you to come and enjoy the festivities with your child. I’ve loved seeing how excited the children have been when they have visited Gigum Hall. The sheer joy on their faces as the hall as been transformed into an art gallery is incredible.
If you’re looking for things to do on your upcoming school holiday, a day trip into the cultural precinct at South Brisbane is a must. It’s one of our favourite places to visit as a family and we have our favourite spots to enjoy. Our list of “must-dos” includes:
- Dinosaur level at the museum
- Top floor level at the museum with the Australian animals, projections on the floor and wooden poles and mirrors to swing around
- The Art Gallery garden for lunch. You can spot lizards, walk through the fountains on the stepping stones and browse some art inside (we remain on the ground level mostly!)
- The State Library ground floor often has holiday activities for children
- GOMA has holiday activities for children too.
And all of this is right by a large river and the Southbank parklands for playtime and adventures! What’s not to love about Brisbane in September?
Have a lovely week.

Problem Solving in Maths
It was lovely spending time in 2P this week watching them working with their elbow partners to solve maths problems using their mathematical language. In partners they represented their thinking in multiple ways and then were challenged by having to justify their answers. Students really had to work together to share their thinking about what they did and how they did it to get the right answer. Lucky their friends were by their side so they could problem solve together.

Animals that Act Like Humans?
It was all giggles in 1/2B this week as they read the collection of Pig the Pug books and read about the ways the animals in the text acted like humans. They had so much fun thinking about how ridiculous some of Pig the Pugs human qualities were. I look forward to seeing their multimodal presentations over the next two weeks as they continue to explore how animal characters take on human qualities within a text.
Have an excellent week.

Year 3 News
What a convincing group of students we have in Year 3! This week I’ve had the pleasure of seeing our students participate in activities to support their speaking and listening unit. As a part of the unit, students are required to participate in a class debate and share an opinion. In 3L, students were developing a list of high modality words, as they listened to a story read by Mrs Langman. Students in 3R were practising their use of high modality words by writing their opinion on a given topic. It was great to see students carefully crafting their sentences by adding or changing key words to make their opinion more convincing.
Using the Third Teacher (the learning walls) in our classrooms continues to be a strong focus for students across our school. This week I observed a lesson in 3E where students were using examples on their learning wall to self-asses and see if their responses were 3 or 4 stars. Similarly in 3T, students completed a task where they compared fractions and justified their thinking. They then used the learning wall to determine whether their response was a 3 or 4 star level. It is fantastic to see our students independently using this resource as they strive to improve.

Gigum Arts Fest
What an exciting week it is for our school to celebrate the Arts! All week we’ve had our classes and their parents viewing the artworks in the new Gigum Hall. Our students are incredibly proud of having their own artworks on display and have been impressed at the talented work of their peers across the school.
As we celebrate the Arts this week, we also have some exciting lunchtime clubs on offer. It was great to see so many of the Year 3 students getting involved in these clubs during the week.
Have a great week.

Writing in Year 4
Our Year 4 students have taken pride in their writing progress this whole term. I want to share some excerpts of their writing with you …
“Bitna was as bossy as an Asian Black Bear.” (Olivia)
“Meanwhile, in a crowded loud village far away there was a senseless man who was as weak as a poor humming bird with a broken wing.” (Sasha)
“Feeling great, Kenji walked to Mount Fuji. His footsteps were so loud. CLOMP! CLOMP! CLOMP! But then, he saw a bright blue body of beautiful water. Yes, it was pretty, but Kenji didn’t know how to get across.” (Bryce)
“But Haruto was the one that learned the most. He learned to always be kind, be kind, be kind even if you’re going through rough times.” (Jiona)
“Azizi soon started sprinting as fast as she could. She was as frightened as a baby leopard being hunted as prey by poachers.” (Grace)
Wow, Year 4 is full of authors! Congratulations to our students and their teachers.
Fractions Fun
Year 4 had some fractions fun this week when 4B, 4C, 4S and 4G competed in their class in a fractions quiz. Students independently solved fractions questions and then the points were tallied. We took a few photos to share with you.

Electives
This Friday is the last week of Electives for Term 3. Students continue in their same elective for Term 4.
Have a fantastic week.

Care for Learning in Year 5 and Year 6
It has been inspiring being in classrooms this week to see the hard work and commitment of all our students and teachers come to fruition. Over the last few weeks students have completed their writing assessment and have commenced their speaking and listening task which has provided a platform for students to discuss and debate their thoughts and feelings about texts. Great collaboration in action! Classes have also been developing a deeper knowledge of their maths’ concepts which was evident when I visited 5P this week. It was great observing the different guided maths groups in action during the lesson. Mrs Penrose has developed so much leadership in her class that a couple of students were a peer mentor and taught a specific part of the scale to students needing some extra support as Mrs Penrose taught a focussed instruction group to really consolidate some students understanding of mathematical language. It was fantastic seeing the amount of student voice in the class and peers helping one another to be the best they can be. Great job 5P!
Year 6 Graduation – Graduation Committee Fundraising
Thank you to all of the families who have donated baked goods, drinks, goods for class hampers and/or time to help raise funds to support the Year 6 Graduation. This week we will be selling raffle tickets to go in the draw to win one of the class hampers. If you would like to buy tickets we are selling them at the Arts Fest or if you are a Year 6 family we are selling tickets through the Year 6 class teacher for $2 a ticket. The raffle will be drawn at the end of this week. Thank you for your support.
Student Leadership
At present we are reviewing and updating our Student Leadership opportunities as a way to increase student voice and agency across our school. To ensure that the opportunities we offer at Mango Hill State School are aligned to community values, I would really like to collaborate with interested parents and carers. At 1:00pm on Tuesday 14 September I am hosting a forum in which I will present the leadership opportunities we are putting in place for 2022 and beyond. This would be a great opportunity to provide your voice and suggestions on how we can make this program effective and represent the ideals of our school community. If you would like to attend please RSVP by COB Monday to vabbo5@eq.edu.au.
Have a terrific week.

Inclusive Education
At Mango Hill State School, we strongly believe in inclusive education and we reflect on our practices so we can be consistently learning and improving. Inclusive education can be described as the belief that all students can learn best in their class alongside their same age peers. We use many evidence-based practices to ensure that our students learn and play in inclusive environments. One practice is the strategic use of co-teaching.
What is co-teaching?
It is a teaching arrangement in which two teachers deliver the curriculum in an inclusive way to students in the same classroom or learning environment. At our school, co-teaching typically involves an ILT (Inclusive Education teacher) and a class teacher jointly planning, instructing and assessing a class of students in a particular curriculum area eg writing. Both teachers collaboratively differentiate the curriculum to suit the needs of their class. There are many models of co-teaching which are used flexibly and interchangeably within a lesson.
All of our teachers have had the opportunity to learn about co-teaching, and three of our wonderful ILT are currently offering a Book Study for those teachers who wish to take their knowledge and understanding of co-teaching to the next level.
Have a great week

Accelerated Reader
Congratulations to Allen who late last week reached 1 million words in AR. This is super news and we are very impressed with Allen’s commitment to reading and quizzing.
Congratulations also to Avery who this week reached 3 million words. This is an outstanding achievement and we are so very impressed by Avery’s ongoing love of reading. She even read ‘Little Women’ to reach this new goal!
We are very proud of both Allen and Avery and have added their phots to our special display in the Hub.

Don’t forget to visit the Hub this week or next to make sure you have a book or two to read over the holidays.
Arts Fest
All of the magnificent Class art pieces have now moved down to Gigum Hall. Don’t forget to visit one afternoon this week to see the fantastic display of art and remember to bid on your favourite piece via Facebook.
Book Week Competition
Voting is still open for the Book Week Competition but will close on Friday. We look forward to announcing our winners in next week’s newsletter.
Have a fabulous week.

AFLQ Schools Cup – Met North/Wide Bay Finals
Our Boys AFLQ Schools Cup team competed at the AFLQ Schools Cup Met North/Wide Bay Finals on Tuesday. With 6 teams in the competition, MHSS only needed a top 2 finish to secure a place in the State Finals.
In round 1 MHSS had a win against Holland Park 28-17. A good start for MHSS with strong games from Naite D, Angus B and Hayden B. In round 2 against Wynnum, MHSS was down 18-6 at halftime. But a great performance in the second half secured a 31-24 win. MHSS were straight into the semi-finals. A win in the semi’s and we are off to the state championships!
The Semi-final was against St Thomas. It was a very evenly matched game with no team able to dominate possession or scoring. It was back and forth throughout the entire match. Unfortunately, a late MHSS rally wasn’t enough with the boys’ team going down in an epic game 25-23. Fantastic effort by all players especially in the semi-final by Ky G and Cohen C.
Well done to all players and coaches on a great 2021 competition. MHSS missed the state finals by just 2 points, but still achieved its best performances ever in the AFLQ Schools Cup.

South East Qld Football (Soccer) Championships Wrap Up
After going through the Term 1 and Term 2 Pine Rivers District Gala Days undefeated, the MHSS Senior Soccer team won the right to represent the district @ the SEQ Football Championships. This was the first time ever that MHSS have been involved in this event.
The championship was held @ Aspley High School and involved Hilder Road and Albany Hills (both were winners of their districts). Results of the day are below:
Hilder Road 1 – MHSS 0
MHSS 2 (Aliyah H, Angus B) – Albany Hills 2
All students played extremely well and gave their all throughout the day. We are so proud of the team effort. Special shout-out to all parents involved - who despite lockdown rescheduling and short timeframes were able to organise everything. Your efforts really are appreciated!
