Official Gigum Hall Opening
We are excited to announce that our new time for the official opening of Gigum Hall is Friday 10 September at 9am.
Steven Miles Deputy Premier and Member for Murrumba and Luke Howarth Federal Member for Petrie will both open the hall and our students will share what is great about our new hall. There will be some performances and a great opportunity to celebrate Team Mango! I hope to see lots of parents attend this wonderful celebration for our school.
When naming our new hall, we wanted to honour the First Nations people of our area, the Gubbi Gubbi people. In consultation with our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community of families, we decided on Gigum Hall. Gigum is the Gubbi Gubbi word for sulphur crested cockatoo, native to our area and considered a guardian of the land. We are lucky enough to often see these cockatoos around our school. In a dreaming story, Gigum watches over everyone and protects them. Our new hall is a place to gather, to feel safe, to celebrate and to show care to one another – protecting each other just like the gigum does for all of us.
It’s almost time for Gigum Arts Fest!
Week 9 is the time to shine for The Arts at Mango Hill State School with Gigum Arts Fest at our new Gigum Hall!
In naming our new hall, we’ve also renamed our annual Art Show to Gigum Arts Fest and moved the celebrations from a one night only event celebrating visual arts, to a whole week of celebrations encompassing dance, drama, music and visual art. You can join the celebrations too!
- Visit Gigum Arts Fest with your child’s class, during their scheduled timeslot (below). Across next week, each class has been scheduled to attend Gigum Arts Fest, with their buddy class to view the art pieces and to participate in art activities. See the timetable, to know when your child’s class is scheduled.

Across the week, there will be instrumental pop ups before school with dance, drama and singing activities during lunch breaks. So, even though the traditional Friday evening, one night only Art Show isn’t going ahead, we’re so excited to have more opportunities to connect with our Team Mango community across the week. We can’t wait!
Recently we sent home information about the upcoming parent teacher interviews. Please ensure you make a booking by Thursday evening so teachers can prepare.
https://eq.sobs.com.au/pt3/parent.php?schoolid=70371
When you attend the interview, I encourage you to ask the following five questions:
- What is my child learning?
- How is she or he going?
- How do you know (how he or she is going?)
- How can she or he improve?
- What supports can I provide and can you provide if she or he is struggling? When will we check in again?
We look forward to enhancing our partnership with you to ensure your little one is achieving to their potential!
Survey results re 2022 Language
Thank you to all parents who completed the recent survey regarding what language students should learn in 2022 and beyond. We had just over half of our parents complete the survey. Based on the survey results, students will continue to learn Italian in 2022.
Parents identified the importance of building student knowledge of language from prep to year 12. Continuing to learn Italian and working with our partner school Mango Hill SSC, we can work toward a seamless P-12 language approach. The other benefit shown in the graph below is that Italian is the 5th most common language spoken in Australia after English.
With the growth of the school, I have advertised for another Italian teacher to join us in 2022 and look forward to further enhancing our program.
Congratulations!
Congratulations to our wonderful P & C who were awarded Highly Commended at the recent P & C Awards. We are so grateful to have such amazing volunteers in our school.

A huge thanks to our wonderful teacher aides who support our students and staff each and every day. We are so grateful for your efforts and expertise!

Team Mango Meet Up
All parents are invited to join us for cuppa at Sole Cafe on Thursday morning from 8:30am.
Student free day
A reminder that this Friday 3 September is a student free day. No staff will be on site.
Have a wonderful week.
Focus of the Week
We will be learning to Care for Self by being ‘Ready to Learn” and discussing how this will look, feel and sound. Being Ready to Learn means that:
- I am calm and in control of myself
- I am prepared and listening to my teacher when she/he speaks
- I am doing the learning my teacher has asked me to do
- I am completing any tasks that my teacher has asked me to do.
Just like us, our students can think best and plan ahead when they are feeling calm and positive. By developing each students’ ‘Ready to Learn” plan we are helping them to identify cues and use strategies so they will be able to continue the learning. These strategies might be:
- Taking a short walk with a friend
- Having a drink
- Having a quick break with a favourite book
- Sitting calmly in a tee-pee or play tent.
Crazy Dress Day
On Thursday 9 September we are celebrating all things art and creativity with the Gigum Arts Fest. On Thursday we invite all students to show off their wild, wacky and creative side with CRAZY DRESS DAY. Crazy hair, crazy socks, or a crazy outfit, let your imagination run wild. Please ensure all Crazy Dress outfits are sun safe and school appropriate with sleeves, enclosed shoes, and a hat for play times. Student leaders will visit classrooms to celebrate the student's creativity and collect a gold coin donation.
QParents
We will be sending out invitations again for parents to register for QParents later this week. If you do not want to register, please email Vanessa Abbott vabbo5@eq.edu.au so you will no longer receive invitation emails. Registration instructions are provided below.
What is QParents?
QParents allows parents to connect instantly with their child’s school to access and manage their child’s student information, including:
- Attendance and absence details, as well as the ability to notify the school of an absence
- Behaviour information
- Academic report cards
- Viewing unpaid invoice details, payment history, and making payments online
- Viewing and updating personal student details, including medical conditions and address
- Enrolment details
- Upcoming events list showing school events, exam and assessment dates, and excursions.
The QParents web and mobile application provides a more convenient, easier way for parents and legal guardians of Queensland state school students to interact with their child’s school. Parents will have secure, online access to their child’s student information, anytime, anywhere, through a smartphone, tablet or computer.
QParents won’t replace the traditional ways you communicate with our school, but it will provide another way to communicate with us.
More information about QParents can be found at https://qparents.qld.edu.au/#/help

We’re in “let’s put it all together” mode in Prep, as we showcase the learning of this term in our assessment pieces.
In English, we’ve completed our Book Week posters and now that we’re writing sentences independently - there’s no stopping us! All we want to do is write, write, write!
We are taking turns reading individually with our class teacher so we can show what we can do by ourselves. In our guided reading groups, we work with other Prep friends with similar reading needs and our teacher is right there, helping to push us along. Now it’s our turn to show our teacher what we can do by ourselves!
We’ve started creating our short, funny poems for our speaking and listening task. It’s such fun to play with words and to create crazy rhyming sentences to make our friends laugh!
In Maths, we’ve been hefting objects and filling containers with rice and sand as we’ve explored mass and capacity concepts. We’ve been learning how to show numbers to 15 in a variety of ways too. It can be pretty tricky to count large groups of objects without doubling up and counting the same thing twice.
This morning and tomorrow morning we celebrate Father’s Day with our loved ones at our Stay and Play mornings.
Is it any wonder we are tired?! Look how hard we are working!
Next week, we can’t wait to celebrate Gigum Arts Fest with our Prep friends and families.

Have a lovely week.

Demonstrating a Growth Mindset

Students are continuously working with their classroom teacher to self-reflect, track their progress and identify their next steps. This week the teachers in Year 1 and 2 came together to check how our students went in their most recent writing task. It was such a celebration to see the distance travelled and how our little friends tended to their feedback to improve. Well done to all our super star writers, we can’t wait to showcase their outstanding work and progress during the upcoming parent teacher interviews.
This Thursday is our Stay and Play with Me to acknowledge and celebrate all the fathers, step-fathers, uncles and special carers in our little people’s world. We hope you have fun and are spoilt with love and care this Sunday.
IMPORTANT - After School Routines Reminder!
Parents, in the afternoon please remind all students that they are to wait in the Junior Under Cover Area till the 2:45pm bell if they are waiting for a sibling, parent or the bus. At 2:45pm students are allowed to transition to their meeting points, but it is essential that they remain in the supervised spaces till then. Every afternoon the Junior Undercover Area is supervised by our teacher aides who will wait with the students till that senior bell goes. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Have an excellent week.

Year 3 News
The Term 3 theme of Growth Mindset has certainly been evident across our Year 3 classrooms this week. In particular with writing, where students have been taking on the last bits of feedback from their teacher and peers to ‘bump-up’ their work. As I have visited classes during the week, I have seen students using their scales to identify their next steps for improvement, and students using the classroom learning walls to enhance their work. It is so impressive to see the way our teachers set our students up for success using the learning walls. Our students have become increasingly independent and confident at using this support throughout the year. In a visit to 3T, I was able to see students look at their feedback from their teacher who referenced which part of the learning wall they could go to for support. The students were then able to go straight to this part of the wall and get some ideas to include in their writing. The students across Year 3 are so proud of the writing they have produced this term. I am always being asked, “Mr Mills, can you read my story?” It is wonderful celebrating the efforts of our students.
I’ve been fortunate enough to visit most Year 3 classes this week during their Maths lessons. Year 3 are learning all about fractions over the next few weeks. In 3C, students were playing a game in pairs to demonstrate and consolidate their understanding of fractions. In 3H, students were coaching each other on how they can use visual representations of fractions to compare them. It was great to see students in these rooms deepening their understanding through these tasks.
I’m looking forward to an exciting last 2 weeks of term as we celebrate the successes we’ve had in homework, behaviour and learning!

Have a great week.

Year 4 News
As we approach the end of Term 3, our teachers are looking forward to sharing your child’s progress with you at parent teacher meetings. I congratulate our students on their growth mindset (and can’t wait to celebrate at our class celebrations), and on their willingness to “bump up” their writing and other tasks by self-assessing and taking on board feedback from their teachers. I saw our 4D students use a social structure called “Talking Chips” where groups of students take turns sharing the plan for their writing and listening to supportive peer feedback.
Yesterday, some Year 4 parents attended the Year 4 Camp Information Sessions. We understand that it’s not always possible for parents to attend these opportunities either due to work commitments, family commitments or otherwise. Whether or not you attended, if you have any questions or concerns about camp please get in touch with your child’s class teacher.
Thank you for your continued support. Finally, I want to share some snaps of our Year 4 students learning…

Have a fantastic week.

Care for Learning in Year 5 and Year 6
Week 8 has been a week in which students and teachers have connected with each other to finalise many assessments for this term. Year 6 students have been busy completing their multimodal persuasive text aimed at advertising an experience to a particular target audience. Year 5 students have been deconstructing a poem and then crafting a creative text exploring a moment in time during the poem. Year 5 classes have also completed their work on the symmetry maths unit and looking forward in demonstrating their knowledge and understanding this week. Last week I had the pleasure of working with 5I who were beginning their work on symmetry. Students used a range of collaborative learning structures to discuss their thinking and connect with one another through the pedagogy. I am looking forward as the days and weeks roll on to holidays in celebrating the success of all of our classes. Keep up the great learning Year 5 and 6!
Gala Day
Last week our Year 5 and 6 students participated in their Gala Day for Term 3. More than the fantastic results, which I am obviously proud of, I was really proud of the connections that I observed between the students before going off to their event and as they returned home following their competition. Students were arm in arm as they cared for each other and demonstrated great teamwork. It is opportunities like Gala Day that enable our students to develop different interpersonal skills and make memories outside of the classroom. Students did a great job at this last week – well done Team Mango!

Have a terrific week.

Three simple steps to ensure swimming success! Get ready. Get set. Go!
Next term, our students in Prep-Year 3 will participate in swimming lessons.
Get ready – Prepare your child for swimming - Students will get changed into swimmers at school prior to leaving by bus. Consider the type of swimmers your child has and practise changing in and out of swimmers independently with your child during the school holidays. Also practise putting on your child’s swimming cap and googles, if needed. For anxious students, visit Grace Pool, point out the pool when driving past or visit their website and watch some videos (https://www.graceswim.org.au/moreinformation). Request a social story from your child’s teacher, if this may help prepare your child.
Get set – Talk to your child about their worries - Talk to your child about swimming lessons. Use the social story or search the internet for images to support your conversations. Reassure your child that they will have a swim instructor to help them, as well as their teacher and a teacher aide for additional support. Parents are also welcome to attend swimming lessons at no cost and may travel by bus with their child’s class, if seats are available. Most parents drive their own cars.
Go – Swim time - Review the social story or images the night before swimming. Have your child help you pack their swimming bag (plastic bag) with all their swimming items clearly named. You may like to use a simple checklist to support this.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
The PRC has now closed for 2021. We have submitted the data to the Premier’s office and look forward to receiving the certificates in the coming months.
Book Week Competition
We are very excited to announce that this year the winners for the Book Week Competition will be decided by students. We have numbered all of the entries and have special voting slips waiting for you at the Hub. Voting will be open all week and we look forward to announcing the winners next week!
AR Millionaires
We have had a big run of millionaire readers this week so are pleased to share their successes with you.
Lachlan has been working hard, especially during the @Home learning time and has reached his first million for the year! Charlie has reached the amazing milestone of 2 million words and is very proud of his achievements. Both Amaan and Chloe have this week reached the extraordinary milestone of 4 million words! What super readers!
We are very proud of Lachlan, Charlie, Amaan and Chloe, and have added their photos to our special AR display in the Hub.

Gigum Arts Fest
This week in the Hub we have all of the Class Art pieces on display. These were created by students from Prep to Year 6 with their Buddy Classes and are such great examples of how creative our students are. If you’d like to have a close look at these, pop on down to the Hub this week. These magnificent pieces will all be auctioned as part of Gigum Arts Fest. I wonder which ones would look great at your place?
The Arts Fest is also an opportunity for our students’ individual art work (created in Semester 1) to be displayed for everyone to appreciate. An important part of learning in The Arts is responding to art works, and the Gigum Arts Fest provides an authentic opportunity for students to be able to do this. We can’t wait to share all of the art work with our families!

Have a fabulous week.

STARLAB INCURSION
This week our Year 5 students had the opportunity to participate in our Starlab visits. Starlab’s Standard Year 5 program is based on the Australian curriculum with a focus on Earth’s place in space, our solar system, planet orbits, composition, relative sizes & distances, space exploration and technology. The presenter demonstrates these key concepts using visually engaging surround imagery and the full-dome show re-iterates these concepts in a fun and exciting way.
Our Year 1 and Year 3 students will have their visit in Week 2 of next term!

BUY SMART
In Week 10 our Year 4 and Year 5 students will have a visit from the Buy Smart program. The Buy Smart Program provides tools for teachers, supervisors and other educators to help our students learn more about issues like budgeting and saving. The presenters will visit our Year 4 and 5 classes for an engaging and interactive presentation about managing money. This will support our students during their Term 4 budgeting units in mathematics. To find out more about the Buy Smart program please visit https://www.qld.gov.au/law/laws-regulated-industries-and-accountability/queensland-laws-and-regulations/fair-trading-services-programs-and-resources/buy-smart-competition/teachers-area/about
