Connection & Clarity
Our 2021 priority is to
- enhance connection with students and families to improve wellbeing and behaviour
- improve clarity of the curriculum so students know how to succeed.
The leadership team have been carefully monitoring student clarity through learning walks and talks. This strategy involves leaders entering classrooms and talking with students about what they are learning and how they are progressing to hear their understanding of expectations. When students know how to be successful, they can continue to improve their work and improve their results.
I have visited a number of classrooms and listened to students over the past few days with members of the leadership team. We have been so impressed with the understanding demonstrated by students. Many of them clearly know what elements they need to include in their work to be successful. I am so proud of the work teachers have done to help students know what success looks like and to give them the skills to strive toward their goals.
The photos below show how engaged students are in these conversations!

Book Week Celebrations
Next week we celebrate Book Week! This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all that we love about books!
All students are invited to dress up as a book character next Thursday 26 August and bring along the book to share. Alternatively, you may like to wear pyjamas and bring your favourite book to show how much you love to snuggle up and read a bedtime story!
At this stage we are planning a whole school parade at 9am on Thursday in our new hall to celebrate Book Week however this will be confirmed early next week once we have an update on COVID restrictions.
We are looking forward to a wonderful celebration of Book Week!
Welcome to Gigum Hall
We are very excited to announce our new hall is completed and will be officially named Gigum Hall.
Following consultation with families in our school community who identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, we are excited to name the hall in recognition of the connection our First Nations people have to our area and our school.
‘Gigum’ is the Gubbi Gubbi word for the sulphur crested cockatoo, a bird native to this area and considered a guardian of the land. We have these cockatoos around the school and there is a dreaming story about how Gigum is always watching over everyone and protecting them. Our hall will become a place of protection as the gigum in the area look out for us.

Prep-Year 3 Swimming Program
In Term 4, students in Prep-Year 3 participate in the Learn to Swim Program at Grace Pool Rothwell.
Permission notes will be sent home this week. Consent forms and payment is due by Wednesday 15 September.
Have a wonderful week.
Tracy Egan
Focus of the Week
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Resilience’. We will be consolidating this focus throughout next week.
Throughout Week 7, teachers will be teaching students about resilience which is generally regarded as the ability to cope with and bounce back after adversity. This can extend from day to day challenges through to life changing events.
Of our four cares (Care for Self, Care for Others, Care for Learning, Care for our School Environment) learning about resilience focuses on caring for self by growing and demonstrating resilience. It is a continuum, and something that can change over time. We can all learn ways of becoming more resilient and developing a growth mindset.
If you are interested in reading more about developing resilience in children, please go to https://healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au/healthy-homes/building-resilience

If you are interested in being on our relief register please email your resume and details to bsm@mangohillss.eq.edu.au. Please indicate days and times available for relief.
All Department of Education Staff require a current Blue Card. If you don’t have a Blue Card you can apply at https://www.qld.gov.au/law/laws-regulated-industries-and-accountability/queensland-laws-and-regulations/regulated-industries-and-licensing/blue-card-services
P & C Containers for Change
Would you buy a school mask?
The P & C are considering selling Face Masks for adults and children both as a community service and fundraiser. We are seeking information about whether you would be inclined to order a Face mask if they decided to pursue this. Please click on the link below to answer a few questions to help us ascertain if this is a viable project. Please complete the survey by next Tuesday 24 August.
Congratulations to all our Students of the Week! These students have demonstrated the MHSS values of respect, commitment, innovation, excellence and teamwork. We are so proud of you all!

We are working towards being 4 star writers! We are creating a poster for Book Week. We have learned feeling words and how to join some thoughts together using ‘and’ and ‘because’.
Our vision screeners are next week for those families who completed the online permission. If you missed that deadline and would like your child included, please contact your child’s class teacher and we can send home a paper permission note as the online window has now closed.
In the playground, we continue to practise taking turns, sharing and using the High Five to solve problems ourselves. We are learning to unpack our own bags each morning. We really hope that when restrictions lift, our parents will continue to encourage skills of independence in their child. It’s such a positive start to their day, when they have carried in their own bag and unpacked their own belongings.

Vision and Hearing screening
Good vision and good hearing is vital for good learning. As parents, we often think, “Oh my child can see and hear” but this is not necessarily the case. The start of schooling is the perfect time to ensure your child has good vision and good hearing. If you haven’t already taken the following opportunities this year, we really hope you join these programs.
We want all our Preps to succeed!
Vision Screening:
Just a reminder that the Primary School Nurse Health Readiness Program is coming to Mango Hill State School.
Each year the Queensland Government offers Free Vision Screening to all children enrolled in Prep in Queensland.
We strongly encourage parents of all Prep students to consider this opportunity for their child to have their vision screened.
If your child is in Prep and you would like their vision screened, you will need to fill in a consent form for your child. Please click on the link below to access the Consent Form and Parent Information Letter.
https://visionscreening.health.qld.gov.au/ParentalConsent/0604TLbY
Due to the current restrictions we have had to make changes to our vision screening dates. The new dates are Monday 23, Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 August. We will also have two days of screening in Term 4. We will inform you of these dates once confirmed.
Please return your child’s consent form to the office or class teacher before Monday for your child to participate in the vision screening.
Hearing Screens:
At the beginning of this year, Mango Hill State School engaged with the UQ Health and Rehabilitation Clinics to provide a Hearing Screening Program to our Prep students. We have secured one last date for this year on 8 September.
If your child missed out on having their hearing tested earlier this year, we strongly recommend that you consider this opportunity for your Prep child.
The cost of the screening is $18.00 per child. To confirm your child’s participation, please complete the attached permission note and questionnaire providing your child’s medical history and return these forms to your child's teacher or to the front office by Wednesday 25 August. You will then be invoiced to make payment of $18 before the hearing screening date.
Please feel free to contact Cassie Stewart (Inclusive Learning Teacher) on cstew245@eq.edu.au if you have any questions regarding the upcoming vision and hearing screens.
Have a lovely week.

Learning Together in Maths

We have been super stars in Year 1 and 2 this week learning and growing together. It has been wonderful seeing our students work in small groups to share the multiple ways they know how to partition numbers. They have used paddle pop sticks, counters and number sentences to represent their thinking in different ways. We love seeing students work together to explain to their friends about why they made those decisions.
Start of Day Routines
Thank you for the continued support from our families in saying goodbye at the gate and building that independence in our learners to take themselves to class. They have done a wonderful job heading straight to the Junior Undercover Area each morning and spending some quality time connecting with their peers.
Just a friendly reminder that for our Year 1 and 2 students, class starts at 8:15am. Teachers open the classroom as soon as the bell goes, settle the students and move straight into circle time followed by learning. It is really important for our students to be on time every morning to help set them up for success. Every day counts!

Have an excellent week.

Year 3 News
What an impressive week of learning it has been from our Year 3 students! In visiting classrooms this week, I’ve had the opportunity to see lots of Maths lessons where Year 3 have been learning about multiplication and division and how they are related. In 3F, I observed students working together to represent multiplication number sentences in a range of different ways, checking their answers to make sure they were correct. In 3R, students were working to improve their writing of missing-part word problems, with lots of students striving for four stars. I was so impressed with the deep understanding of multiplication and division demonstrated by the students in these classrooms this week.
In a visit to 3C, I was able to observe students collaborating to justify who had given the correct time: Ms Curran or Mr Mills? 3C worked in small groups to share their thinking and justifications using mathematical language and then developed a final answer as a group. Well done to Ms Curran for telling the time correctly and impressive justifications from 3C!
At Mango Hill, we work really hard to ensure students have clarity about what they are learning. Equally, we value the importance of connection with students and their families. In Year 3, our teachers have been working with students and students have been working with each other, to solve problems in the playground while showing the Four Cares. This is achieved by discussing playtime expectations before break and then sharing celebrations with each other after break. It has been wonderful to hear from Year 3 students about how they have solved problems and demonstrated a growth mindset each day.

Indigenous Care Posters
In 2020, Mrs Drummond and our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students collaborated to create posters that were aligned to our Four Cares from an Indigenous perspective. We are so proud to now have this work on display in all of our classrooms. The background for these posters and their alignment to the Four Cares is below:
Care for me = Care for self
We care for ourselves by checking in with others and asking for help when needed.
Care for mob = Care for others
We care for mob by coming together for a yarn and checking in with our friends and family.
Care for culture = Care for learning
We care for culture by sharing the history and stories of our First Nation Australians.
Care for county = Care for environment
We care for country by understanding the sun gives our animals and plants life in which we need to look after.
Have a great week.

Year 4 News
We are having a wonderful Week 6 in Year 4. Over the past couple of weeks, I have been joining our Year 4 classes for some of their learning and I am thrilled by how much our students care for their learning. We are so lucky to have such skilled and committed teachers at our school.
Students are all working on “bumping up” their writing. Students have individual “next steps” to work on. Lots of students are ensuring that the moral they have chosen for their traditional story is embedded throughout their writing. Other students are working on their text connectives, creating pace and mood in their writing. I can’t wait to read their stories!
In Math this week, students are matching decimals to their equivalent fraction and showing this on diagrams and number lines. Check out the photos below!

Year 4 Camp
Parents, this week you will receive a further email about Year 4 camp. Please note that our Year 4 teachers are offering a Year 4 Parent Information Night on 31 August, and you may want to add a date claimer to your calendar. Remember, if you have any concerns or questions please speak with your child’s class teacher.
Have a fantastic week.

Care for Learning in Year 5 and Year 6
It certainly seems like a long time ago that students were learning at home. As I have travelled between classrooms I have seen a real sense of urgency with students really attending to their learning. Well done to all students and teachers who have hit the ground running. I had the pleasure of visiting 6P this week and observed their lesson on multistep problems involving decimals. What I really liked about 6P is how they used some example explanations written at a 3 star and 4 star to pinpoint the discernible differences between a 3 and 4 star response. The students in 6C were so clear about what they needed to do to be successful. I also had the opportunity to work in 6O as they continued to learn the writing skills necessary for their writing assessment. It was great working with some students at their Bump-It-Up Wall and have them speak to me about why and how student work included examples of the four star writing components. Well done!

Year 6 Graduation – Art Show Fundraising
Each year the Year 6 Graduation Committee is in charge of fundraising at the Arts Fest. This year the Arts Fest is scheduled for the 10 September. All funds made through the selling of food, drinks and raffles go towards funding the Year 6 Graduation. If you would like to volunteer on the night of the Arts Fest to help with the sausage sizzle, bake and food stall please let me know and I will develop a roster. There are ways that you can support the Year 6 Graduation if you would like to. The following are some options:
- At the Arts Fest we will be selling soft drinks and water. You can donate cartons of soft drink cans and bottles of water to the office for us to sell.
- Each year we sell baked goods at a bake stall. If you have a talent in baking please feel free to bake some goods for the committee to sell at the Arts Fest. These can be delivered to the school on the day of the Arts Fest. Please include the ingredient list so that we can provide to customers.
- One of the traditions at the Arts Fest is the raffling of the class hampers. These hampers are created by each class. In each class is a white basket in which students can donate goods. Each year each class gets a different theme and families are encouraged to purchase some goods that can be included in the raffle. Thank you in advance to all the families that participate in this – it always generates a lot of enthusiasm. This year the themes are as follows.
- 6K: For Kids
- 6C: For Her
- 6T: For Kids
- 6R: Savoury
- 6O: For Him
- 6P: Sweet
- 6B: For Her
- 6V: For Him
Have a terrific week.

Reading at Home
Reading is such an important life skill. Each day at school, students are provided many opportunities to not only learn to read but also to practise their reading. What can you do to help your child at home? Below are some ways you can incorporate reading into everyday family activities.
- Read bedtime stories together including your own childhood favourite
- Play a board game and ask your child to read the instructions
- Put your child in charge of reading the grocery list at the supermarket
- Read a recipe and cook something yummy together
- Visit your local library – keep a variety of texts in your home (magazines, comics, newspapers, books etc)
- Create a cosy reading space in your home
- Ask an older sibling to read to a younger one.
Have a great week.

AR Millionaires
The last week has been a super one for our AR Millionaires. With great excitement Chris reached his goal of 1 million words and you can see from his smile he was very proud of himself! After working hard and reading lots of books, Armaan also reached his goal of 3 million words. To top off our exciting week. Ipshitha reached 4 million words! This is an extraordinary achievement and Ipshitha is the first person to reach these dizzy heights in 2021.
We are very proud of Chris, Amaan and Ipshitha and have added their photos to our special display in the Hub. It is not too late for everyone to start working towards a million AR words!

Gold rushes
This week we have a special display in the Hub focussing on the Gold Rushes. As part of our learnings about History, Year 5 students are investigating the impact of the gold rushes on Australian society. The discovery of gold in many places in Australia changed lives and communities for ever. Pop on down to see a few special artefacts including an old billy can and a gold panning dish. These items are on loan from the Qld Museum for the next week or so.
Book Week
Don’t forget that next week is Book Week. We will celebrate with a special parade presentation on Thursday. Students are welcome to attend this parade dressed up as their favourite book character. Don’t forget to also bring your book along so we can compare your costume with the character!
It is also not too late to enter our Book Week Competition. All entries need to be sent to the Hub by Monday 22 August. We have already received some super entries. Look at Avery who designed and created this amazing school bag to represent the world of Harry Potter! We look forward to receiving lots more entries next week. Your entry can be a poster or book or a 3D object. We have lots of prizes to award and it looks like the judging is going to be tough!
To help with the judging we will ask students to vote for their favourite entry – more information to come about this opportunity next week!
Caring for the school environment
Don’t forget that caring for the school environment also includes caring for our books. Sadly over the last few weeks we have had several books returned wet and mouldy. Sadly these books can no longer be borrowed by others and need to be removed from our Hub collection. A great way to make sure that our books stay dry is to use a Library Bag. These bags can be purchased from the Uniform shop or can be any kind of plastic or material bag. Please help us to take care of all of our books.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Thanks to all those who have returned their Reading forms to the Hub. All forms need to be finalised and returned to the Hub by the end of August.
Have a fabulous week.
