Connection & Clarity
This term, we continue to focus on our two priorities for 2021, Connection and Clarity. This includes the following.
- Connection with students and families to improve behaviour and wellbeing. We are working to ensure our staff have the tools to support our diverse learners.
- Clarity of the curriculum and teaching strategies so students know what they are learning, how they are going and how to improve. Our teachers have done a great job building their understanding of the Australian Curriculum and are working on using Bump-it-up-walls and our feedback process to help students know how to succeed.
Facilities Upgrades
I am excited to update you on our progress with our improvements to facilities.
- The Air Conditioning Project has started this week! Over the next 8-10 weeks the contractors will work each night installing air-conditioning in all classrooms. We can look forward to comfortable learning this coming summer!
- Our new hall is really taking shape (pictured below). We expect to be in the hall in 2-3 weeks!
- Our new 3 storey building with 16 more classrooms is progressing with the underground work in progress. We expect this project to be complete in February/March next year.
- The carpark changes have certainly assisted traffic flow. We cleared both drop off areas by 3:10pm most days this week.
We are so fortunate to have so many improvements happening which will allow our students to learn in world-class facilities!
From 2-5 August we will have a School Review. This process happens every four years in all state schools in Queensland. Four senior members of the department will visit the school for four days and interview most staff members and a range of parents, students and community members. This process is a wonderful opportunity to have some fresh eyes look through our school culture, processes, curriculum, teaching and learning and provide us with valuable feedback and ideas for possible improvement. We would love some parents to make themselves available to meet with a member of the review team. If you can spare 20-30 minutes to have a chat on Tuesday 3 August from 2:10pm, could you please email Vanessa Abbott on vabbo5@eq.edu.au by next Wednesday. If you would like to chat with a member of the review team but this time doesn’t suit, please let Vanessa know and she will arrange another time.
Have a wonderful week.
Tracy Egan
Focus of the Week
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Naidoc Week”. We will also be consolidating this focus throughout next week with special activities and a whole school parade.
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
The NAIDOC 2021 theme – Heal Country! – calls for all of us to continue to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction.
Country is more than a place and is inherent to our identities.
More information can be found on: https://www.naidoc.org.au/
Please be mindful of our neighbours at the back of the school if you are picking your children up at the Mallard St pick up zone. We have noticed parents arriving quite early and queuing in this area for 20-30 minutes which really blocks the streets and is totally unnecessary. We strongly encourage you not to start queuing until close to 2:45pm. At this stage, we are able to get all students loaded in this area between 2:50-3pm so there is really no need to waste 30 minutes queuing and it does impact on the residents in the area who are having difficulty accessing their houses. Thanks for your support.

Prep News
In Prep, we love our Maths and the different ways our teachers help us to build our knowledge and understanding. This week in Prep, we have been using positional language to describe locations. For example, put your toy under your desk and put your toy beside your water bottle. Students have also been exploring giving and following simple directions. Some students have even been able to create alternative pathways when an obstacle blocks their original pathway!
I also had the pleasure of visiting our Prep students as they participated in their Raw Art incursion. Some students had the opportunity to use clay to build a robot or bird and other students used different materials to create a bottle brush painting. All students have had a wonderful time and I look forward to visiting the remaining classes during their art incursion this week.

Next week, we start welcoming our 2022 Prep students for their enrolment interviews. We will conduct these interviews on a range of days across this term. If you know of families who live within our catchment, but whom are yet to enrol, please encourage them to collect an enrolment pack from Kerry, our Enrolments Officer, as soon as possible!
Have a lovely week.

Bumping Up our Writing
Mrs Skewes' class this week were super busy learning about the dreaming story, ‘How the kangaroos got their tails.’ Working in pairs students carefully looked at a retell of the story and bumped up an example by adding 4 star elements together. Our little friends did a wonderful job adding detail to the text. They were so clever that Mrs Skewes couldn’t help but use the students' describing words to put up on display for the class to use later during their independent writing activity.
It is always such a celebration to see the students' clever ideas going up on display. They get very proud of seeing their ideas be acknowledged and celebrated!

What a success! Our little friends have loved the variety in our lunch time clubs this Term and it is super fantastic to see them try some new things. Over the past few weeks there have been about 30-40 students attend our Hot Wheels Club, Origami, Art and Craft, Beading, Lego and Pokemon/ Bey Blades Club. Most of these clubs are resourced, but students are also welcome to bring in their own from home. It is just super important that they keep their toys for themselves and ensure they keep them in a safe space, like their bag when not at play.
Have an excellent week.

Year 3 News
This term we have a school-wide focus on growth mindset, showing determination and grit. I have been so proud of our Year 3 students who have shown examples of this, both in the classroom and in the playground. I encourage all parents and carers to ask their children, “How did you show a growth mindset at school today?” I’m sure there will be plenty of examples to share this term!
Over the past week, I have been observing our students’ work spread across the walls of our classrooms. It has been great to see these snapshots of student thinking and collaboration. These examples of student work will be used as a reference throughout the units of work in Maths and English as a learning tool to support students as they engage in a range of activities. I look forward to seeing Year 3 students using the ‘Third Teacher’ for support.
This week, we celebrated as a year level the achievements of all of our students in Semester One. I am so proud of the growth of all of our students during the first half of the year! We recognised our students who achieved academic excellence, achieved a significant improvement in engagement in learning, and applied themselves consistently in all learning areas, as well as our age champions and record holders in athletics. I know that many of our students have set goals already to achieve one or more of these awards in Semester Two. I know we can all achieve this.

Playtime
Our Year 3 students have a range of wonderful opportunities during playtime each break. They can play ball and running games on the junior grassed area, climb on the playground, get creative in the sandpit, chill in the Piazza, build in the Undercover Area and engage in a range of extra-curricular clubs with a focus on STEM, Performing and Creative Arts, Culture and gardening. With so many different opportunities for playtime, I encourage all our students to trial something new this term. How lucky are we to have such a variety of activities on offer!
Electives
Electives will begin on Friday of next week for our Year 3 students. There will be a range of new electives for students to choose from for Semester Two. Students will have the opportunity to vote for their elective preference this Friday.
Celebrating NAIDOC week
During the holidays, our nation recognised NAIDOC week. As a school, we will be doing this beginning Friday 23 July and for the following week, culminating in a Parade on Thursday 29 July. The theme for NAIDOC week this year is Heal Country!. Heal Country! – calls for stronger measures to recognise, protect, and maintain all aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage. Our students across the school will have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities based on this theme throughout the week. We welcome all of our families to attend the parade on the morning of Thursday 29 July.
Have a great week.

Year 4 News
Our Year 4 students are already engaged in this term’s learning. This week some members of the Leadership team visited three of our classes with me to check in with students about their learning in Mathematics. Year 4 are learning about equivalent fractions, recognising them in multiple ways, locating them on number lines and solving problems. Students successfully shared what they were learning in that lesson, how they were going and what their next step was. They could also show us how to use the Bump It Up Wall in their classroom, and some students could even show us examples of their work on the wall.
This Friday, students will have the opportunity to hear Year 4 teachers explain the Elective they will be offering in Semester 2. Electives will then start in Week 3 and once again, will take place on Friday in the afternoon session.
Congratulations to 4A, 4C, 4G, 4S, 4T and 4V who were all successful in meeting their goal in Uniform Week, and acknowledgement of 4B and 4D who were nearly there! Every class will have a chance again next term! Now we are looking forward to Ms Egan announcing the lucky class who has their name drawn out for a prize. Thank you very much for your support.
Finally I want to congratulate Year 4 students who received an Award this morning, and encourage all students to continue to show their growth mindset in Semester 2. Our theme this term is Growth Mindset so students will have many opportunities to discuss and learn about this.

Have a great week.

Clarity of learning in Year 5
It was a great week in Year 5 classrooms with all classrooms continuing the great clarity (learning outcomes) and connection (behaviour and well-being) work achieved in Semester 1. I enjoyed getting into 5W to observe the collaborative work they were doing on their narrative description of an Australian poem and the discussions they were having about picking a precise moment in time. I loved getting into 5S to watch the collaborative work students were completing as they explored their understanding of fractions. It was great observing 5R as they explored an A exemplar of their writing assessment as a way of developing clarity of learning. Finally I really valued the conversations I had with 5P as they co-constructed their Maths bump-it-up walls. Well done Year 5!

Year 6 Camp - Building Connections
This week our Year 6 students participated in their camp at Tallebudgera Outdoor and Environmental Education Centre. This is the first camp these students have attended since 2019 and it was inspiring seeing their smiling faces as they commenced their adventure. The camp program is organised to provide students with opportunities to develop independence, resilience and interpersonal skills needed to succeed as they commence their transition to secondary school. Students enjoyed making connections with students outside of the class. These connections are vital in ensuring our Year 6 students are engaged at school and feel safe and supported. For our students remaining at school, we have provided them the opportunity to act as leaders and mentors in Prep classrooms this week. This opportunity will provide our Year 6 students with some experience in building relationships with unfamiliar people and working together to help students younger than them. Great job Year 6 students and thank you to all of the teachers that made this opportunity so rewarding.

Have a terrific week.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with a disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines.
We set out more detailed information regarding the NCCD in the Term 2 Week 10 newsletter. For those who are interested, you can learn more at https://education.qld.gov.au/about-us/reporting-data-research/data/disability-data-collection

Premier’s Reading Challenge
Don’t forget to return all completed Reading Records to the Hub by the end of August.
Book Fair
Thank you to all those who have generously supported our Book Fair this week. Our school receives a significant percentage of all sales to purchase new books for the Hub so your support is greatly appreciated. Book Fair will be open until Friday. We open each morning at 8am and close at 3:15pm. We are also open every first break and take cash or EFTPOS.
Book Week
In the coming weeks we will also celebrate Book Week. This is a great opportunity to celebrate books and to remember all of our favourites. As part of Book Week, Mango Hill is holding a special Book Week Competition. We have some great prizes that will soon be on display in the Hub. We look forward to receiving lots of super entries in the coming weeks.
Have a fabulous week.

PAT Testing
Last week our students in Years 2-6 completed the PAT M and PAT R tests. Here at Mango Hill we use the PAT testing as a diagnostic tool to help teachers gather more detailed information about discrete skills that relate to learning, for example in their literacy and numeracy capability. Standardised assessments, such as PAT, are used to measure understandings and skills developed over time by teaching the curriculum. The results from these tests do not go towards your child’s report card mark. Teachers will use this information to help understand any misconceptions or gaps in their student’s literacy and numeracy capabilities and will address these misconceptions within their classrooms.
Have a wonderful week.
