Report from P & C
Thank you to all of the parents and citizens that connected on Monday night for our latest P & C meeting. I would like to acknowledge the fabulous work the P & C does in working with the school to ensure our continued success. Thank you to the P & C for their ongoing commitment to achieve quality learning outcomes for our students by kindly donating $5000 to the school to subsidise our Year 3 PCYC excursion. This excursion will provide our students with the necessary skills to safely travel around our community on their bikes. I would also like to thank the P & C for their donation of $1000 to support our efforts in connecting with our families. Thank you!
Do you have a skill you can share with us?
MHSS offers a range of lunch time clubs and activities to support students with positive play and provide additional opportunities for them to experience different things. We would like to expand these options by using the expertise of parents who are willing to volunteer some time on a regular basis or a one off ‘pop-up activity’. If you have skills in a sport, art, craft, yoga, meditation or anything children may be interested in and you can volunteer some time, please contact Ben Mills bxmil3@eq.edu.au by next Wednesday and we will be in touch. Thanks for your help!
Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
This week I had the pleasure of working with a fantastic class, Year 5B, as they continued their work on solving problems using multiplication and division. It was great observing students use their scale to track their learning and to monitor what they have successfully achieved and what their next step to success is. I also loved watching students access their class Bump-It-Up Wall to assist them in bumping their work from a three star to a four star.
Well done 5B! Last week I had the opportunity to meet with all Year 5 and 6 teachers as we moderated the English and Maths folios from Semester 1. I really appreciated having conversations with colleagues about the achievements of our students. With a couple of final weeks to go it looks like 98% of Year 5 and 6 students will achieve the standard for English and Maths. We are really proud of our achievements and look forward to working really hard in Semester 2 to ensure that all students continue to succeed.

Debating
In Week 8, our Year 5 & 6 Debate Teams participated in the first round of the QDU Primary Schools Debating Competition. All members of the teams worked incredibly hard to plan, write and present their arguments. It was the first time ever debating for all our team members. All 3 teams performed extremely well, only narrowly missing out on the win, with the adjudicators commenting on how impressed they were with our teams. The teams will participate in the second round of debates in Week 1 of Term 3.
Have a terrific week

Focus of the Week
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Managing our Big Emotions”.
We care for self and care for others by managing our big feelings. Managing our big emotions can also help us care for our learning.
Sometimes we have big feelings which are hard to manage. It is important to use our strategies to help us to recognise, control and manage our emotions, learning how to self-regulate.
“To Manage our Big Feelings” we need to remember:
- It is never ok to hurt someone
- Recognise the feeling in my body
- Know and use a strategy that helps me
- Use words to say how I feel and what I wish would happen
- Ask for help
- Take time to calm and understand when you are Centred and Ready to Learn.
A lovely little social story that you may wish to use at home with your children “Sometimes I make mistakes”.
ICAS Registration
Mango Hill State School will once again be participating in the 2021 ICAS Assessments. ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Digital Technologies. Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition. Top performers will be eligible for medals and the opportunity to attend a special award ceremony to have their academic excellence publicly recognised.
Please find attached the details regarding registration and Online Parent Payment System. Specific details of assessment days and times will be released in the near future.
End of Semester 1 Music Concert
On Thursday 17 June there will be the opportunity to hear the Mango Hill State School Music Ensemble perform at our end of Semester 1 Concert. This will include our First Year Strings, Senior Strings, Concert Band, Senior Choir and Percussion Ensembles.
The concert will be held in the Piazza and will start at 6pm finishing at approximately 7pm. Students need to arrive by 5:30pm (at the latest) and come to the studio with their instruments. Everyone should wear formal uniform with school jacket or jumper.
We have organised for the Cafe to be open from 4:30-6pm for hot & cold drinks and snacks.
We look forward to our first live music performance and we invite our Mango Hill State School community to join us for the concert. It would be wonderful to especially see lots of our students who are new to the Instrumental Music program this year coming along to experience a music concert.
If you have any questions about the event please contact your instrumental teacher Mrs Alena Bogdan (Strings) axbog1@eq.edu.au, Mr Malcolm James (Brass, Wind & Percussion) mjame38@eq.edu.au or Mrs Morrell clmor0@eq.edu.au

Back of the school drop off and pick up
A reminder that Fantail Cr is a very narrow road and residents are concerned about the dangers of congestion with so many parents parking in that area. We encourage you to consider using the Mallard St Stop, Drop and Go as an alternate to parking.

Prep News
We’re still working hard in Prep with only a week and a half to go this semester!
We can’t wait for our first Sports Day tomorrow and have been preparing for our events in our PE lessons with Mr Newell and Mr Hills. We’ve also read a social story, so we know what to expect. Tomorrow, we are going to try our best at everything because that’s what Team Mango students do!
Next Wednesday afternoon, June 23 we’d love for our Prep parents to visit us in the afternoon to see our wonderful work from this semester. Our Prep Showcase will be from 1:45pm. We hope you can join us!
What’s happening in Term 3? Well, we start our interviews for our Preps beginning school in 2021! If you know of any family in our catchment not yet enrolled, please encourage them to hand in their enrolment forms so we can book an interview. To participate in our transition sessions, which are so very valuable for our students to help them transition positively to school, students do need to be enrolled and the interview completed.
Our playgroup continues each Friday morning from 9-10am. Miss Livvy does such a lovely job of facilitating! If you have a child younger than school age, please come along. We meet in the Prep area.

Have a lovely week

Wonderful World of Maths
Our Year 1 friends have been very busy exploring a range of mathematical concepts in the Guided Maths rotations this week. It was wonderful to see 1N doing a super job building on their number work and practising to solve addition and subtraction problems. They used a range of resources to represent their thinking as well as applying the mathematical language they learned this term to justify their thinking. What a clever bunch of mathematicians.

Friendly Reminder
We need your help! Morning routines are really important to helping our little friends start a successful day. In Year 1 and 2 we start to welcome our little people into the classroom right on the bell with a warm welcome and often a class greeting. Sometimes when our friends come late, even by 10 minutes they miss this valuable time to connect with their teacher and friends. This is also the time when we make the day predictable and go through the visual timetable and get straight into the first learning session of the day. It would be great if we could get your help by getting our students arriving right on that 8:15am bell and straight to class. I know some days it can be tricky, but your support is very much appreciated in helping them have a smooth start to the day.
Have an excellent week

Year 3 and 4 News
It’s been another busy, but successful week for our Year 3 and 4 classes. They have all worked incredibly hard throughout the term and I, along with their teachers, am very proud of the progress that they have made in their learning.
This week I visited 3R during a writing lesson where they were editing their writing samples. Students were using their success criteria to check how they were going, making sure they included capital letters, full stops and compound sentences. It was wonderful to have so many students in 3R proudly showing off their writing pieces to me. Well done on your hard work this term 3R and Ms Reade!
With just over one week of school left for Term 2, there is still plenty of things happening for our Year 3 and 4 students. This coming week we have Athletics Carnival and our Mid-Year Concert for those classes who did Performing Arts this semester. I look forward to seeing our students demonstrating their sporting and performing talents!
Check out some of the photos from our learning over the past week!

Behaviour celebration
Today we celebrated achieving our Team Mango goals in our behaviour celebration. In Term 1, all students worked towards achieving a kindness goal. This term, our theme has been Team Mango. It has been wonderful hearing about how our Year 3 and 4 students have actively demonstrated that they belong to Team Mango, both in the classroom and in the playground.
Electives
On Friday, our Year 3 and 4 students participated in their last elective lessons for the semester. Some of the electives this semester included volleyball, soccer, zumba, iMotion, painting, digital art and engineering. It has been wonderful to hear so many positive reflections from students about their experiences in electives this term. The Year 4 engineering elective was lucky enough to have a real-world chemical engineer come and work with them in their last lesson. Thanks Mrs Goodall for organising this. I heard everyone had a blast!
Have a great week

Student Survey
Positive school experience is one of the protective factors for student mental health, now and across our students’ lifetimes. We also know that our students’ wellbeing impacts on learning outcomes and student behaviour.
At Mango Hill State School, students from Year 2 to Year 6 participate each term in a student survey. The student survey is designed to show a broad picture of student wellbeing across Years 2-6. Using the results of the survey, we can try to identify patterns in student wellbeing and put in place whole school or year level measures to respond if we see an area of wellbeing that is low. We can try to identify what measures are really successful in supporting student wellbeing if we see broad increases.
The student survey is an important part of monitoring student wellbeing within our school and ensuring we are putting in wellbeing supports to meet the needs of our students. We are committed to helping our students feel happy and safe at school so that they can learn and achieve their best.
Have a great week

AR Millionaire Readers
Congratulations to Anika who this week reached one million words in Accelerated Reader! This is a super goal to have reached and we are very proud of Anika’s efforts. She has been reading and reading all year to make it to one million words already!
Late last week we also celebrated with Ipshitha who has just reached the outstanding milestone of 3 million words in AR! This is an extraordinary achievement and we are all very impressed. Ipshitha looks like she is well on her way to 5 million words this year!
To celebrate super reading by both these girls, we have added their photos to our special display in the Hub. Pop on down to see them and all of our AR millionaires!

Borrowing
This week will be the last week for Class Borrowing from the Hub. Students are welcome to keep their current loans over the holidays and we will be open all of next week before and after school for those eager readers who would like another book. The Hub is open every day from 8:15am until 3pm.
Don’t forget for any lost or missing books, we ask that you replace the book with another one. The replacement book may be of any kind, new or pre-loved. Let us know when you are replacing books as this enables us to keep track of all of our resources.
