P & C Meeting
Thank you to the parents who attended the P & C meeting on Monday night. Outcomes of the meeting include the following.
- The proposed 2022 Student Resource Scheme has been changed to move reams of paper from the booklist to the SRS. This will mean the SRS will be increased from $90 to $100 and the booklist will be decreased from $100 to approximately $80. This will be a saving of around $10 per student.
- Following the disappointment of very poor service from Kookaburra with the 2021 SRS, it was also agreed that book and stationery lists will be sent home for parents to choose their supplier. No school supplier will be engaged.
- The P & C received over $5000 commission from Kookaburra and this money has now been donated to the school for additional books for the library. Thank you!
- The parents at the meeting endorsed the updated School Dress Code (attached) and Community Engagement Framework.
- It was decided to employ an Operations Manager for 10 hours a week to support the P & C business operations. This position will be advertised in the coming weeks.
Our next P & C Meeting will be held on Monday 14 June at 6:30-8pm.
National Walk to School Day – Free Dress
This Friday we will celebrate National Walk to School Day! Students are encouraged to use active travel to school and wear high visibility or fluoro clothes to draw attention to the important issues around road safety! Gold coin donation for the Student council please.
Mr Winney and Mrs White are ready with their high-vis vests!
Great work by our Year 3 and 5 students who have participated in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) over the past few days. These tests will continue next week and we expect results later this term.

Colour Explosion Fun Run - Save the Date!
This week you will receive a sponsorship form for our planned Colour Explosion Fun Run to be held on 4 June. All sponsorship donations should be made online. The more money students collect for our school, the bigger the prize they receive! Visit myprofilepage.com.au and complete details. Students will need a plain white or pale shirt to see the colour explode!
We will be calling for parent volunteers to assist on the day so please save the date if you can assist!
Additional Facilities for our school
The Department has announced the construction of another 16 classrooms at our school to cater for additional growth expected over the next few years. This 3 storey building will be located where the old bike racks are and move down the hill to where the current multi-purpose court is, clearing some of the garden area. The multi-purpose court will be moved over closer to the environmental area. This area is not currently used as a play area. The building will have an under croft giving us some additional shaded play space.
Site establishment is currently underway and we will start to see building works in the coming weeks. We expect this project to be competed in February/March 2022. Once complete, some of the temporary hire buildings will be removed which will give us additional play space near M block and in the Junior play area.
Have a wonderful weekTracy Egan
Focus of the Week
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is Road Safety. PLUS this coming Friday all students will be encouraged to wear hi-vis/fluoro to celebrate “National Walk to School Safely Day”. Students will be learning how to care for self by being safe around roads and how to travel safely to school.
Classroom discussions will be based around the following.
When I care for self:
- I wear a helmet to keep my head safe,
- I wear closed in shoes to keep my toes safe
- I look both ways to keep myself safe from being hit by a car
- I use the pathways
- I remain with an adult and ensure I am walking on and near roads.
When I care for others:
- I listen to the crossing supervisors to keep myself safe and respect them
- I follow the road rules and care for road authority by respecting what they tell me.
The following resources put out by the Department of Transport is an excellent way to start some discussions at home too.

What a busy week it’s been for us in Prep!
- We loved playing with all of our mums, aunts, grans and nans, and other special carers at our two Stay and Play mornings to celebrate the special mums and other carers in our lives. Thank you for coming!
- We started to Bump It Up in our writing. We use our Bump It Up Walls when we write, to help us to know what is our next step to improve. By the end of this term, we will be able to write sentences on our own. Bet you can’t believe this?! But it’s true!
- Ms White visited our lovely playgroup, held each Friday in our Prep area with Miss Livvy. It is such a joy to see all the little ones faces as they explore our Prep play space, sing songs with Miss Livvy and play with their mums and dads. All families are welcome to join! You just need to have a kid to play with, who is younger than school age. We meet in our Prep under cover area each Friday at 9am.
- Miss O’Brien presented a parent information session about how parents can support their child’s reading development in the home environment. We had over 30 parents attend and many others have expressed interest. We will look at holding another session at a different time and how we can share the presentation with you, should you not be able to attend in person.
And that’s a wrap for Week 4.

Have a lovely week

Special Moments with our Loved Ones
It was such a joy to see so many Year 1 loved ones attend the Stay and Play afternoon last Friday. Students were thrilled to spend quality time with their loved ones or used the time to make a secret treat to take home and surprise someone special. There were lots of crowns, little treats and portraits being made. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend or gave their little person a big hug and smile as they shared their masterpiece with them when they got home. We hope your afternoon was special.

Rock Brain Versus Superflex
This Term our Year 2's are learning a lot about Superflex and Rock Brain. Superflex is a superhero character who models and teachers our students to have flexible thinking when they perceive things may be too hard, tricky or frustrating. Sometimes our little friends feel like Rock Brain. That might mean that they really want to go first and are reluctant to turn take. Or they get stuck in their thinking and find it hard to problem solve other ways to overcome a particular hurdle. This might look like getting upset over a little problem and needing to use their Superflex thoughts.
Superflex thoughts teach students to use flexible thinking to overcome hurdles that upset and frustrate them or make them cranky. He teaches students other ways of thinking, this activity is really hard but I can do my best and try it. We love seeing our little friends showing us their Superflex powers!

Year 3 and 4 News
Where have the first 4 weeks of term gone?! As we enter the middle of Term 2, I’m enjoying seeing the learning from across Year 3 and 4 come together. This week I have witnessed students committed to their learning, showing teamwork in class and in the playground, innovating on their own and each other’s ideas, showing respect to one another and striving for excellence!
Recently, I had the pleasure of spending some time in 4B and 4T. 4B were looking at their diary entries based on a chapter of Rowan of Rin and giving each other feedback about what they did well and what their next steps could be. It was nice to see the growth mindset of these students as they celebrated what they were already doing well and considered what they could do to continue to improve.
In 4T, students were working away at finding unknown quantities to solve problems. Mr Thomas was so excited to see the collaboration of his students on display, as they worked together to not only find the answers to these problems, but prove them too!
A special shout out to Kaiden in 4G and Santiago in 3T this week. Kaiden was a superstar mathematician displaying the MHSS value of innovation as he discovered a new way to solve problems with unknown quantities. He left Mr Mills and Ms Cosmo speechless with his thinking! Santiago has shown the MHSS value of commitment recently, by practising regularly to be the first student to solve Mr Mills’s Rubik’s Cube!
Electives
Electives have continued this term for Year 3 and 4. It is a wonderful opportunity on a Friday afternoon for students to spend time pursuing their interests with other students and teachers from their cohort. Last Friday, I enjoyed visiting the ‘painting’ elective as they worked away at some beautiful abstract art pieces.

NAPLAN
Congratulations to our Year 3 students on completing their very first NAPLAN tests this week. I was so proud of the way they engaged with these tests to show us what they know. Thank you to teachers who have worked hard to set their classes up for success by providing such calm learning environments. Best of luck to all of our students in Year 3 and 5 participating in NAPLAN online over the next fortnight!
Have a great week

Care for Learning in Years 5 and 6
It has been another big week in Year 5 and 6 classrooms. Congratulations to Year 5 for their first week of NAPLAN testing. Students worked hard in applying the concepts they have leant in class this year to the requirements of the test. In Year 6 this week I had the opportunity of working with some students while they continued their work on text analysis. Year 6 are examining the novel Blueback by Tim Winton this term and analysing the meaning of language choices and the overall message by Winton. I enjoyed discussing with students the choice of metaphors and Winton’s character choices and how these contributed to the messages of the novel. Well done Year 5 and 6!
Electives - Digital Art
In the Digital Art elective, students have been using the Sketchbook app to create and manipulate a variety of images. Our challenge last Friday was to create a galaxy using a variety of effects, including smudging, spray paint effect, and gradient fill. They also used multiple layers to build up the components of their galaxy picture. These were some of the many amazing artworks produced!

Have a terrific week

Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present in the moment, aware of your thoughts and feelings and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. Research supports mindfulness as an important strategy to improve mental health and well-being including for children - helping them manage stress and anxiety, self-regulate emotions and promoting gratitude and self-compassion.
Here are 3 mindfulness activities you can practice with your child/ren at home.
- Mindful breathing. Sit or stand in a comfortable position. Put your hands on your belly. Close eyes or look down at hands. Take in three slow deep breaths in and out and watch your hands move. You can count “123” for each breath in and “123” for each breath out.
- Mindful eating. While you are eating dinner together, bring awareness to the sensations of eating. What is the taste like? What does the food feel like on your tongue? Take notice of the muscles working to eat the food. What part of your body is the food touching?
- Senses countdown. Spend time with your children and together notice 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, 1 thing you can taste.

Accelerated Reader
We are very excited to announce that Amaan has recently reached one million words in AR. This is an outstanding achievement and we are very proud of Amaan’s persistence and resilience. Pop on down to the Hub sometime soon to see the photos of all of our Millionaire Readers! The Hub is open from 8.15am each morning and until 3pm each afternoon. In the mornings students should wait in the piazza until 8.15am and then come across to the Hub. We look forward to seeing you soon!
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Don’t forget to start your reading for the PRC this week! We have until the 27 August, but what a great chance to read, read and read! All books read (or listened to) should be recorded on the special PRC form. These are available here or in print form in the Hub. This year there are also some special bookmarks to print and use while heading towards your target!

Number Facts Parent Information Session
On 18 May (8:30-9:30), I will be holding a parent information session on Number Facts. We will have a quick look at how we teach Number Facts at Mango Hill SS. You will get some hands-on games to take home and play with your child to help reinforce the strategies learnt at school. It will also be an opportunity for you to ask any questions about our program. Our session will be held in the Hall, and I look forward to presenting some practical ideas for you to engage with your children at home around Number Facts.

Sporting Schools Update
Unfortunately due to our Sporting Providers not being able to acquire coaches, we are not able to conduct our Term 2 Sporting Schools program for both Gymnastics (Yr P-2) and Athletics (Yr 3-6). We are now hoping to use the Sporting Schools funding to run sessions for classes during school time later in Term 2. While we would like to continue to offer the afterschool program this is sometimes not achievable due to coaching staff not being available. MHSS will again apply for funding in Term 3 so please keep an eye out in the newsletter early Term 3 for updates.
