Can you spare an hour to help?
The school has some upcoming forums to hear parent views to improve our school. We would like as many parents as possible to attend so we gain some insight into the wishes and views of parents on a range of topics including:
- Learning and the curriculum
- Communication
- Extra-Curricular
- Wellbeing
- Diversity and inclusion.
The evening forum will be held next Wednesday 12 May from 6:30-7:30pm and the morning forum will be on Thursday 13 May from 8:30-9:30am. Can you spare just one hour to help us improve? If you can attend as a representative of your child’s class, please let your child’s teacher know by Thursday 6 May? I hope you can assist!
Excitement as our new hall takes shape
It is very exciting to see our hall taking shape. The photos below give you a sneak peak at the progress made. The Hall is due for completion in July!

Focus of the Week
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday, is Safety in the Learning Environment. This focus has the purpose of developing:
- When I care for self I am being safe and secure in the classroom
- When I care for the environment I am respecting belongings
- When I care for others I report unsafe equipment so that people don’t get hurt.
Students will be discussing how it looks/sounds/feels to walk sensibly in the classroom, use equipment sensibly, ask permission to leave the classroom, only go into a room when a teacher is present, sit on chairs safely and ways to self-regulate their emotions. This focus will also be reinforced the following week so students can practise their learnings.
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, our Prep and Year 1 students are busy preparing for their loved ones to come and Stay and Play. This week our Prep and Year 1 students will host a range of games and crafts to connect with their mums or other special carers in their lives. Over the next few days keep your eyes open for a special invitation coming home in your child’s bag. We would love to see as many mums or other special carers come and join us in celebration of Mother’s Day.
Prep – Save the date, Thursday 6 or Friday 7 May – 8-8:30am, in the Prep under covered area.
Year 1 – Save the date, Friday 7 May – 2pm, at your child’s classroom.
Covid safe hygiene behaviours remain important. We ask that you wash your hands upon arrival, maintain appropriate distance from others when on site and stay home if you’re unwell.

In Maths, we are exploring length. We are working out how to measure objects to see which one is longest. We aren’t using rulers just yet! Before we learn precise measurements, we need to be able to…
- Know how to use the same starting point to measure
- Know, understand and use the vocabulary of measurement; long, longest, longer, shorter, shortest, short, equal / same
- Have a good go at estimating length of objects, using everyday items.
Learning about length is fun! At home, you could support this work by using objects around your house and using the language of comparison. “Hmmmm, which one is longer, the knife or the fork?” Check your child uses the same starting point so it’s a fair comparison!
We hope to see as many mums and special caregivers at our Stay and Play mornings this Thursday and Friday, to celebrate the special mums and caregivers in our lives. You should have received an invitation from your child, letting you know which day to attend. We would appreciate it if parents and children not scheduled for that morning, ensure they wait for the start of their school day away from the Stay and Play space. This includes the grassed area. There continues to be many children who are playing on the grassed area before school. Another reminder, if your Prep child is dropped to school between 8 and 8:15, they should wait in the Prep undercover area with Miss Fiona for their bell to ring for class. If your child is waiting for school to start with you, then they need to wait with you please. Thank you for your support!

Playing our part to build a national picture of child health
In early 2021, our school, along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the fifth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).
The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school. Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families.
Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it isn’t an assessment of individual children. We have used previous data from the 2018 AEDC to work with our incoming Preps and kindergartens and to share knowledge in a more “big picture way” about the students in our community and how we can work together to help them transition well to school. Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole and that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing class programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census. To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website: www.aedc.gov.au.
If you have any questions, you can contact me at mwhit37@eq.edu.au or call me at the school.

Before School Routines
A smooth, calm morning routine can really help our little friends have a positive start to the day. Last Term many of you would remember that our big messages throughout the Term was about our Year 1 and 2 students starting their day with some calm, quiet mat activities at the Junior Undercover Area. These activities have been intentionally set up to support our students to care for self and others by playing a quiet game with a friend on the mats. Most of our students are making great choices and enjoying connecting with their friends before school, sitting on the mats and doing construction activities, quiet talking or sitting with their parent/carer. Keep up the great work!
Please remember we have some lovely teacher aides who support our students from 8-8:15am. Could you please help them by ensuring your child/ren are seated in the right area before school each day, a reminder as they get out the car would be very helpful! The Year 1 and 2 students should not be in the Prep area or running on the open grass space before school. They may sit with a parent, but not be playing in this area. If they are dropping off a Prep student before school they need to take them to the Prep Undercover Area where there are also activities set up and teacher aide supervision. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Clarity in Writing – Knowing our Next Steps
Over the past few weeks we have been busy practising our writing skills so we are able to create a new character for a story in Year 1 or to write a recount in Year 2. It has been wonderful seeing students highlight their celebrations and work with their teachers to plan for what might be next to help them extend their writing. We know that when students have a clear understanding of what they need to know and be able to do, they are able to conquer their goals, with the ongoing support of their teacher of course.

Have an excellent week

Year 3 and 4 News
At Mango Hill State School, our staff work hard to provide clarity and support to all students during learning. One of the ways our teachers do this is through our ‘Learning Walls’. We call the Learning Walls the ‘Third Teacher’ as it is a place that students can go to for help during a lesson if they can’t get immediate support from their classroom teacher. These Learning Walls are co-constructed by teachers and students and are used purposefully to enhance writing and solve problems. It has been wonderful to see the way our students are using these walls more and more as the year progresses to support their learning.
This week I had privilege of visiting 3F during their writing lesson and 3C during a measurement lesson. In 3F, students were looking to improve their diary entries from Charlotte’s Web by using a consistent mood. Mrs Fitzpatrick challenged her students to carefully select noun and verb groups to reflect the mood of a character. 3F collaborated throughout the lesson to generate a variety of noun and verb groups to include in their diary entries.
3C were working hard at measurement during their Maths lesson. They did a ‘deep dive’ all about rulers and discovered some fascinating features of rulers to support them in taking accurate measurements. The students then used their understanding to measure a range of objects around the classroom.
Amazing learning on display in 3F and 3C! I look forward to visiting some more Year 3 and 4 classrooms this coming week.

NAPLAN online
Last Thursday we held our parent information session regarding NAPLAN online. Please read on in our ‘curriculum’ section of the newsletter for key information from the presentation. NAPLAN online begins on Tuesday 11 May for our students in Years 3 and 5. If you have any specific questions regarding NAPLAN online, please contact our NAPLAN coordinators: Jess Rivett (jxqui5@eq.edu.au) and Ben Mills (bxmil3@eq.edu.au).
Have a great week

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
It feels like we have blinked and suddenly a fortnight of learning has raced by in Year 5 and 6. This week I had the opportunity to work in some Year 5 classes as they continued their work on persuasive writing. In particular I had the pleasure of working in 5S as Miss Stacey modelled a persuasive piece of writing convincing her class that cooking is a great hobby. Students were exposed to Miss Stacey’s thinking and then replicated a similar process for their persuasive writing. I had the opportunity to read some convincing arguments about why I should take up football, gaming, drawing and listening to music. What I liked specifically was the use of high modality language and the strategic use of persuasive techniques. Well done 5S!

Year 6 Student Leaders
To mark the beginning of Term 2 it was my pleasure this week to award the next round of Student Leader badges to some much deserving Year 6 students. These students have worked hard for a long time in being great role models within our school community. Throughout their time at Mango Hill State School all of these students have followed the Four Cares and our values. Also, many of these students have demonstrated commitment to a growth mindset and improving each and every day. Congratulations Year 6!

EcoMarine Ambassadors
Last week our four Year 5 EcoMarine Ambassadors represented Mango Hill State School when they connected with other EcoMarine schools and visited Tangalooma to learn more about how we can care for the environment. Students learnt about the impact our lifestyle has on our waterways and in particular what we can do as a community to look after our natural world. We look forward in learning from our Ambassadors as we continue to care for our environment.

Year 6 Graduation
Each year I work with the Graduation Committee in organising the Year 6 Graduation. As our school continues to grow, each year we reflect on our Graduation Ceremony and look at ways of celebrating the impact our Year 6 students have on our school and the achievement of completing their primary phase of learning. This week I will email all Year 6 families offering the opportunity to be a part of this year’s Graduation Committee. If you would like to be a member of the committee and prepared to work with a group of passionate families, please email me and I will add you to the email list. I look forward to meeting with the Graduation Committee in the near future and working with you in ensuring we celebrate the great achievements of our Year 6 2021 cohort.
Have a terrific week

Working Memory
All students rely on their working memory to learn. Whilst there is ongoing research into working memory, there is evidence that practice can help working memory skills for specific activities. Here are 3 great tips for using working memory skills in activities at home.
1. Have your child be the ‘teacher’ and show you how to do something.
Being able to explain how to do something involves making sense of information and remembering it. Maybe your child is learning a skill, like how to play handball. Ask your child to teach you the rule and games.
2. Playing cards.
Simple card games like Crazy Eights, Uno, Go Fish etc utilise working memory in two ways - children have to keep the rules of the game in mind and they also have to remember what cards they have and which cards other people have played.
3. Encourage active reading.
Talking out loud and asking questions about the book you are reading together uses working memory. Drawing pictures from the story and discussing new vocabulary are active reading strategies that can help with forming long-term memories, too.
Have a great week

Premier’s Reading Challenge
Mango Hill State School has once again registered for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. This year the challenge begins on 10 May and finishes on the 27 August. This gives us a few days now to consider which books we would like to read in the coming months. Students are able to read any books at all – those that they have borrowed from the school library, as well as those from our own home libraries or local libraries. Any kinds of books, including picture books, poetry books, factual books, chapter books or novels, are able to be included. Students in Years 5 and 6 need to read 15 books, and students from Prep to Year 4 need to read (or listen to) 20 books.
Don’t forget to record all of the books you read on the special Reading Challenge forms. These are attached or available from the Hub. All completed forms should be returned to the Hub by 27 August.
Last year we had 100s of students participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge and we look forward to many more joining us in 2021! Let’s get planning so we are ready to read, read and read from the 10 May!
Have a fabulous week

NAPLAN ONLINE
NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum. Students are assessed on the same literacy and numeracy curriculum content, regardless of whether they complete the tests online or on paper. One of the main benefits of NAPLAN Online is tailored (or adaptive) testing, in which the test presents questions of higher or lower complexity depending on a student’s performance. Tailored (or adaptive) testing is designed to assess a wider range of student abilities and to measure student achievement more precisely. Your child should not be concerned if they find questions more challenging than usual; they may be taking a more complex test pathway. A student’s overall NAPLAN score is based on the number and complexity of questions they answer correctly.
Why do students do NAPLAN?
Students in Years 3 and 5 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance.
What can I do to support my child?
On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for and students are not expected to do so. You can support your child by reassuring them that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and by reminding them on the day to simply do their best.
Our teachers have been working with students to ensure they are familiar with the types of questions in the tests and will provide appropriate support and guidance. Students have also had opportunities to practise using the NAPLAN browser so they are familiar with how it works and looks ready for next week.
Participation in NAPLAN
All students in Years 3 and 5 are expected to participate in the annual NAPLAN assessment. Students with a disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support normally provided for classroom assessments. You should discuss the use of any adjustments for your child with your child’s teacher.
What if my child is absent from school on NAPLAN days?
Where possible, we will arrange for individual students who are absent at the time of testing to complete missed tests at another time during the school’s test schedule. Please see the schedule below.
Where can I get more information?
For more information about NAPLAN:
- contact your child’s class teacher or Jessica Rivett jxqui5@eq.edu.au or Ben Mills bxmil3@eq.edu.au (NAPLAN coordinators)
- contact your local test administration authority at https://nap.edu.au/contacts/test-administration-authorities-contacts

Pine Rivers District Cross Country
Mango Hill competed in the Pine Rivers District Cross Country trials on Tuesday. In beautiful conditions, runners made their way to Pine Rivers Park to compete against the 22 other schools in the district.
Students were extremely excited and nerves were definitely present. The course, which consisted of laps around Pine Rivers Park, was in excellent condition with 10 year old competitors completing 2km and 11 and 12 year old competitors completing the 3km course.
The attitude that Mango Hill runners displayed prior, during and after running was excellent. All competitors completed their race to the best of their ability with many students happy to improve on their performance from the MHSS Cross Country.
Mango Hill had a number of runners finish in the top eight, which qualified them for the Pine Rivers District team to compete at the Metropolitan North Cross Country Trials later this term. Stewart T (7th in 12yr boys) and Melchi M (4th in 10yr boys) put in massive efforts and ran great races to qualify.
For the very first time MHSS had runners place in the top 3. Ruby M in her first trip to a district event came 3rd in the 10yr girl’s event, which Ky G also took 3rd in the 11yr boy’s event. Very gutsy runs by both of these students with many high-level competitors trying to chase them down at the end of their races.
The highlight of the day was definitely our first ever individual victory, which was completed when Nadia W displayed a very strong finish to take out the 11yr girls race. Nadia this year also broke our school cross country record so while her fantastic result was not a surprise, it was certainly well celebrated by all member s of the MHSS family. A huge congratulations to Nadia!
With five students in total qualifying for the district team, three ribbons including a 1st place, this was definitely MHSS best year and we are proud of the dedication displayed in our team. Well done to these students and the best of luck at the regional cross country later this term.
Well done to all the Mango Hill runners and a special thank you to the parents who came on the day to cheer on our team.

Boy’s AFLQ Schools Cup
On Thursday 18 boys from MHSS represented our school at the annual AFLQ Schools Cup Competition which this year was played at Burpengary Sports Complex. This was the 5th year Mango Hill SS had entered into the competition. MHSS finished 2nd place in the past three year’s regional events so the team was excited to improve and try and make it further into the competition. There were six teams competing with our long-time rivals Deception Bay and Banksia Beach amongst them.
The boys team, captained by Fergus C, played Morayfield East in its first match. In an easy start to the day MHSS finished 62-2 winners. The next three games followed a similar pattern with MHSS amassing big wins over Narangba Valley, Deception Bay and Virginia. Hayden B kicked a bag of goals while it was an easy day for defenders like Tyler R and Jack C. However, all boys did the “team” jobs to ensure an easy passage for MHSS to their last match.
In the last round match, MHSS played effectively a Grand Final against the also unbeaten, Banksia Beach. Banksia Beach were always the team to beat so the boys, led by Coach Mr V and Manager Mr Wong, were pumped and ready to go. MHSS shot out to an early lead kicking three goals in the first half. Huge performances by Angus B, Melchi M and Cohen C ensured Banksia went to half time a little shell-shocked. In the second half, not much changed with MHSS dominating the entire match to come out 31-6 winners.
For the first time in the school’s history, MHSS had WON the AFLQ Schools Cup Regional Playoff day. Our boys’ team will now compete at the SEQ Finals in Term 3 to hopefully progress towards the state finals.
A very special thank you goes out to the wonderful parents who came as team officials and helped out. Without this wonderful support days like this would not run as smoothly as they did last week.
Girl’s AFLQ Schools Cup
Last week 16 girls from MHSS represented our school at the annual AFLQ Schools Cup Competition, which this year was played at Burpengary Sports Complex. This was the 4rd year Mango Hill SS had entered the girls into the competition. In that time, MHSS had only one win from the competition, but with a whole heap of new talent coming into the team, including two players who made the Met North AFL team, the confidence was high going in. There were five teams competing with MHSS placed against Deception Bay, Banksia Beach, Morayfield East and Narangba Valley.
MHSS first game was against Morayfield East, who proved a great competitor. Coming out of the blocks a little slow, the girls soon adapted to the physicality and pace of the game away pushed Morayfield East all the way. A close 10-7 loss to start but a great team effort.
The second game was against a Narangba Valley. The girls really came together in this came and kicked away to an early lead. Great performances from Nadia W and Alexis W led the team to a 22-1 win.
The next two games were going to be tough against two typically very strong teams. Firstly, Deception Bay. The girls went in fired up and tenacious…and boy, it showed. Izzy R moved to the backline and along with Norahnie A, they formed a defence that was nearly impenetrable. The tackling from the girls was amazing and they were constantly stopping much bigger opposition from scoring. Strong running in the midfield from Aliyah H and great leadership from Michaela VB, meant MHSS had a chance of pulling off a huge victory. A close match the whole way swung when Alexis W kicked a crucial goal in the 2nd half for MHSS. The girls held on for an unbelievable 10-8 win.
The last match was against the unbeaten Banksia Beach. With the confidence from the previous match, the girls went in determined. Again, the running and tackling power from MHSS was second to none with all girls putting in a huge effort. The score fluctuated back and forth but eventually Banksia kicked two goals in the second half to take out the match 21-13.
The girl’s team ended up finishing runners up. This was the best result any of our girls’ teams have achieved. All of the girls performed extremely well and as a team, MHSS were significantly improved. Mr Hills and Mrs Duffey were extremely proud of each of the girls who participated on the day and could not have asked for a more committed and lovely group of students. The commitment shown by these students to not only attend the day, but also to participate in training after school is a credit to them and their families.
A very special thank you goes out to the wonderful parents who came as team officials and helped out. Without this wonderful support days like this would not run as smoothly as they did.
Met North Netball
Last week Isabella M represented the Pine Rivers District at the Metropolitan North Regional Netball Trials. In some fantastic news, Isabella was selected in the Metropolitan North Netball team for 2021. This is an extremely difficult team to make with competition for spots very high. She will now travel to Nissan Arena in Brisbane in June for the QLD State Netball Championships. This is a huge honour for Isabella and we wish her the best of luck!
Have a fantastic week
