Swimming carnival success
Last Friday our 8 and 9 year old students participated in their annual swimming carnival. Congratulations to all students on their efforts, excellent behaviour and growth mindset as they embraced new challenges.
Special thanks to Nick Hills and Tyson Newell for their excellent organisation of the event and to all the staff who assisted. Thank you also to Helping Hands who volunteered some staff members to assist with the extra supervision required so parents could attend.
This Friday our 10-12 year olds will participate in their swimming carnival. A reminder that parents interested in attending must register their details and make payment before the day in order to attend. Numbers are strictly limited and you cannot simply turn up on the day. We look forward to another great event!
Go Red for CF!
On Friday 4th December we will be having our annual Go Red for CF day that was postponed in May. Within the MHSS community, we have four families affected by CF.
In order to help raise awareness and funds for Cystic Fibrosis we have organised a day of fun, free of charge. Children in their class groups will be able to have a jump on inflatable obstacle courses throughout the day.
Children are invited to wear something red (red shirt, red shorts, red hair accessories, red socks etc) and bring a gold coin donation. If you would like to donate a little extra you can give it with your gold coin or donate via the link below.

Thank you to Cindy Clenton for her organisation of this even. Please help us support those affected by Cystic Fibrosis.
Booklist Orders Due Soon
A reminder that in 2021, we will make a change to our current Student Resource Scheme (SRS). Instead of the school procuring all resources, parents were sent a book and stationery list for you to purchase your child’s books and stationery for school. This can easily be done through Kookaburra who have agreed to donate 10% commission to the P & C. Please ensure you have placed your order by 10 December to ensure delivery to your house before school starts. Alternatively, parents can purchase items from other places. The lists and ordering details are on the school website. https://mangohillss.eq.edu.au/enrolments/resource-scheme
If you are in financial hardship, please make contact with us to discuss how we can support you and your child prepare for the 2021 school year. Special thanks to Helping Hands OSHC who have made a generous donation to support families in need.
Have a wonderful week

Celebrating Kindness
We’re celebrating kindness this week in Prep! We are focusing on being kind to everyone in the playground, in the classroom and before and after school.
It can be tricky to make positive choices when we are tired. We’ve worked hard this term and we are very proud of our growth! Our Prep teachers are working hard to keep routines consistent in our rooms; we are still learning! Our guided reading groups continue until the end of next week. We continue our creative writing work. We are practising counting forwards and backwards. So many of us can count backwards from 50 and backwards from 20! Wow!
Have a lovely week

Assessment and Reporting
Over the last week, the teachers have been working with the students on their summative assessment pieces. The Year 1 and 2 teachers are encouraging students to demonstrate what they know in a variety of ways; with hands on materials, by conversing with students and of course encouraging students to write their answers. We are so very proud of how much the students learned this year!!!
In Week 10, the students will receive their Semester 2 report card. The comments on the report cards will inform you of the progress of your child this semester against the standard outlined in the Australian Curriculum for each subject area. A reminder that to receive a Sound (C) result means that your child is at the level expected for the subject. It is of course super important to note the effort rating that your child has received. We want all students to be encouraged by their efforts. Developing a growth mindset and acknowledging that hard work will result in improvements is so important in the early years of schooling.

Have a great week!

Swimming Carnival – Having fun in the sun!
What a wonderful atmosphere it was on Friday at the Deception Bay Aquatic Centre for Part 1 of the Mango Hill State School Swimming Carnival. The Year 3 and 4 students had such a wonderful day enjoying some water play, novelty races and cheering on their friends as they competed in a variety of races. It was great to see so many smiling faces. Well done to all those students who were awarded ribbons, broke records and gave it their very best. A big shout out to Mr Hills, Mr Newell and our wonderful Year 3 and 4 teachers and teacher aides who helped make the day special!
Please enjoy some photos of some very happy children who achieved some outstanding results at the carnival.

ICAS Celebrations
ICAS is an opportunity for parents, students and educators to see how a student is able to put into application their knowledge and skills in new contexts, using a range of higher order thinking strategies. This year Mango Hill State School once again offered the opportunity for parents to register their child/ren in the 2020 ICAS tests and for those who participated there were a number of celebrations. Students the past week were acknowledged for their participation and achievement with a number of students receiving Distinctions and High Distinctions for their work. Well done to all those that gave it a go and for those that received awards for their incredible achievements.
Have a lovely week

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6 Classrooms
Last week (week 7) was a week full of assessment in which teachers and students worked together, supporting one another, to ensure all students were able to demonstrate their understandings of the Year 5 and 6 achievement standards. We look forward in the coming weeks to celebrate these great results with our community.

This week our Year 6 cohort commenced their Welcome to High School week in which students experienced the life of a secondary school student. The week started with most of our students attending the transition day at Mango Hill State Secondary College as well as some students attending the academy days at Murrumba State Secondary College. As the week progressed students were mixed up in different groups in different classrooms. One student commented that it was great to work with a range of different peers. Teachers nominated different teaching areas and targeted some concepts aligned to the 7-9 Australian Curriculum concepts therefore providing students the opportunity to engage in teaching and learning they will receive next year.

Year 6 Graduation
It is almost time to celebrate the great achievement of our Year 6 cohort. It has certainly been a different year this year and we look forward to pausing for the night to reflect on the years of special memories these students made during their time at Mango Hill State School. A friendly reminder to all families that if you have not done so, please ensure you had paid for both the Year 6 Graduation and the Year 6 excursion by the end of this week. The school will need to confirm numbers very shortly with Eaton’s Hill Hotel and the excursion organisers. I have been working hard with the Graduation Committee to ensure that students sit with at least one of the friends that they nominated – we have done the best we can and I thank you for your understanding on the night. We are also organising the finishing touches to ensure that, despite no dancing, our students will have a fun and engaging night.
Have agreat week

End of Year Updates
As the 2020 school year moves towards a close, here are some updates to take into the holidays:
Student Code of Conduct- On 9 November, our School Council voted to endorse our MHSS Student Code of Conduct. The Student Code of Conduct is for implementation from the start of the 2021 school year. You can find our Student Code of Conduct on our website. Thank you to the students, staff and parents who contributed to the creation of the Student Code of Conduct. We will be reviewing the document annually.
Care Class Mystery Visit- Ms Egan, our Principal, and all of our Deputy Principals, loved each Friday this semester because it was Care Class Mystery Visit day where we met with that week's mystery visitor and heard from our students about what they had learned in Care Class that morning. It was a wonderful opportunity for small groups of students from across the year levels to meet and share stories of what had gone well that week, what they had learned in Care Class and exciting news about weekend plans. Care Class Mystery Visit will continue in 2021. Check out some of our photos below.

Holiday plans- There are a number of school holiday activities on offer through our local libraries and more information can be found at:

Accelerated Reader
It has been a huge year for reading, especially for those students on AR. Congratulations to everyone who has reached their goal, regardless of how small or big.
In the last week we have had a couple of very happy students who have reached their goals of 1 million words. Congratulations to Noel and Aliyah who have been working hard over the last few months to reach this outstanding milestone! We are very excited to add their photos to our AR Millionaire wall. Well done Noel and Aliyah!
Also this week we are very excited to announce that Arman has reached an extraordinary 7 million words in AR! Arman is a quiet consistent reader who has been reading lots in the last month to reach this point. Congratulations Arman!
And to top off our AR celebrations, Prithuvi reached 9 million words! This is the highest number of words we have ever seen a student read in a school year and we are so very excited to add another photo of Prithuvi to our wall. In fact while Prithuvi has been at Mango Hill State School he has read a total of 26 million words in AR books! This is a great example of what can be achieved when you set a goal and worked consistently towards this. Prithuvi has done this year after year to reach this extraordinary milestone. Congratulations Prithuvi!
Pop on down to the Hub to see all of our AR Millionaires in our special display. We will leave the 2020 Millionaires up on our wall for the next 12 months and look forward to adding lots of millionaires to the wall in 2021! Congratulations to every one of our AR Millionaires!

Return all Books
Don’t forget that we need all our Hub books returned as soon as possible. Thank you for your help with this huge task. We look forward to lots of borrowing in 2021, but for now we need to take stock of all of our books. For any lost, missing or damaged books we ask families to make a donation of another book as a replacement.
Book Fair this Week Only!
Book Fair is now open and will operate until Friday. Books are on sale before and after school, as well as during first break. Our school receives a generous commission so your support of this event is greatly appreciated. We are happy to take cash (although only Australian dollars) and also have an EFTPOS machine.
Have a wonderful week

P & C News
Whilst 2020 has been a challenging year for us all, the P&C would like to mention some of our achievements in support our fantastic school. Even with COVID restrictions having a significant impact on our fundraising opportunities and events, I believe we have still managed to support our school diligently this year. Some highlights include....
- P&C Contributions to the school: Term 1 $2,000, Term 2 $2,390, Term 3 $4,000 & Term 4 $2,422. These funds have supported numerous schoolwide programs, equipment purchases and event subsidies. One special item is the provision of 2020 graduation badges to our Year 6 students to recognise the achievements of finishing their primary school education during such a challenging year. This has been a particularly unique year for this cohort, with their final year at MHSS vastly different to preceding students. The P&C felt it was important to recognise their resilience and given them a token of best wishes for their future schooling wherever they may go. We also purchased in conjunction with Helping Hands, a defibrillator to be kept on school grounds for medical emergencies.
- Canteen building refit to cope with our rapid school growth since opening in 2012 - $17,900 investment in equipment and utensils including warming cabinet, 2 new ovens, a new stove/oven unit and a cash register for canteen business & school events.
- Creation of a cafe seating area for staff, visitors and parents to enjoy when on the school grounds. This project was completed in conjunction with MBRC, Helping Hands and MHSS administration.
- Road Safety Grant recipient of $13,340 which will be passed onto the school for the delivery of ongoing road safety activities and messaging for our school community in 2021. We are also awaiting the outcome of a further grant (CGBF) that will potentially see approximately $18,800 for the purchase of more musical instruments. We are grateful to MHSS School Leadership and Administration teams for their support in these grant applications.
- Reallocation of two P&C fundraising events (Election BBQ & Cookie Dough fundraiser) to the Year 6 graduation Committee. This has replaced previous subsidising of the graduation event normally supported by the Annual Art Show and a supplementary P&C donation for the night - estimated $5,000.
- Allocation of $25,000 towards an electronic sign to be completed as part of new classroom construction between now and June 2021.
If you are interested in being involved with the P&C and having a say on 2021 planning and support for our school, our first P&C meeting will be early February 2021. It will include our Annual General Meeting where all Executive roles will be open for nomination, along with general membership applications also open. Stay tuned for meeting details early 2021.
Thank you
Renee
