Bike Racks
Unfortunately, last week, we once again had scooters stolen from our bike cage. I urge all students to lock their bike/scooter. This small investment will deter thieves. If you have any information about the three culprits who took these scooters, please reach out to our friendly administration staff.
Father's Day Stall
Fathers’ Day is fast approaching. Our active P&C committee, is organising a Fathers’ Day stall on Thursday 4 September. Please note this stall is ONE DAY only and students must only bring CASH as EFTPOS cards will not be accepted. A big shout out to Mel, Belinda, Amelia and Mackenzie for the ‘behind the scenes’ preparations. Mango Hill values what you do for our school.
Pyjama Day
Last week many students turned up to school in their pyjamas. It was a chilly day so oodies and ugg boots were the perfect attire. A huge thank you to our students and our community for supporting this event. We raised over $1000 for our school council. We also acknowledged the National Day of Action Against Bullying. Thanks again for those that acknowledged this day by wearing a purple accessory. Thanks also to Ms Kendra Hendy for organising this event.
Book Week
We are on the count down to the BOOK WEEK parades! Book week is one of my favourite times of the year as it’s a wonderful way to celebrate the power and love of reading. Parents/Carers please don’t feel like you need to spend money on expensive outfits. Some of the best costumes are often those that are handmade. For further information, please refer to the curriculum news section in this newsletter.
Arts Fest
We are also getting closer to Arts Fest. Last year was one of the biggest turnouts yet. Let’s make it just as amazing this year. There will be heaps of food, fun activities and a celebration of the ARTS. I hope to see you there. Thanks to Ray White North Lakes for sponsoring this event.

Wakakirri
This evening our talented and committed Wakakirri team will be performing. It’s not just the talent that is awe inspiring, it’s their ongoing commitment to each other that I’m most proud of. I’m really looking forward to attending this evening and cheering them on from the crowd. Once again, I’m not sure what we would do without Ms Kostoglou. I thank her for her commitment and ongoing dedication and for the many hours she has spent bringing this performance to life. Thank you also to Mrs Morrell and Mr Vlieg for their assistance.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Next week you will receive an email from the school with instructions on how to book in for our upcoming parent teacher interviews. Interviews will be held over a four-week window including the last two weeks of Term 3 and the first two weeks of Term 4. Each teacher will choose dates and times depending on when they are ready to share assessment results and other information.
We encourage you to book a place so you can discuss your child’s learning, social and emotional progress and engagement. If your child has a personalised learning record, updates from this can be shared as well.
Cricket Pitch Refurb
A big thank you to Dan the president of the Lakes Knights Cricket Club for coordinating the refurb of our cricket pitch. We would also like to take the opportunity to thank the following business.
- Tom (State Infrastructure Manager) Queensland Cricket
- John Powell, Max Parsons, and the entire Management Committee from Brisbane North Cricket Association (BNJCA)
- Adam and the awesome team from Keith Dudgeon Cricket Specialist
- The Lakes Knights Cricket community
Diversity Day Parade
Diversity Day Parade – Friday 17 October (Week 2, Term 4)
Our school community will be celebrating Diversity Day with a parade on Friday 17 October. This event will provide an opportunity for students, staff and families to recognise, share and celebrate the rich cultural diversity within our community.
We invite families to contribute to the occasion by sharing ideas on how their culture might be represented during the parade. This may include sharing information and samples of traditional dress, presenting music or dance, or offering another form of cultural expression that reflects your family’s heritage.
If you would like to be involved, please contact Mrs Burnett via email at jburn289@eq.edu.au. We look forward to working together to create a memorable celebration for our school.

Focus of the Week
This week in Care Class we will learning to Care for Others. When we care for Others, we value everyone in our class and as a part of Team Mango. We will reflect on what makes a good friend, being a good friend and showing empathy for others.
Empathy is the ability to understand the feelings of others and is a crucial skill for children to develop. It involves recognising emotions, understanding another person's perspective, and responding with compassion.
Sometimes, understanding the feelings of others can be tricky. When we provide children opportunities to discuss feelings and model responding with compassion, we are supporting them to build strong skills to form friendships and feel a sense of belonging.
Reading at Mango
Year 2 Word Reading
In Year 2, we have been working hard on learning the different ways to spell phonemes, exploring the alternate spellings that words can have. We are discovering the special rules that help us decide which spelling to use, and practising how to sort words based on these rules. For example, did you know that we have learned four different ways to spell the phoneme /o/ as in ‘hope’- o, oa, ow, and o_e? We are also using our knowledge when spelling these words in sentences, alongside making sure we use correct punctuation every time. Each week, we show just how clever we are by using all our brain power to become confident readers and amazing spellers!
Mango Hill State Secondary College

Book week
On Friday 22 August we will have our first book week parade. The theme of this year is 'Book an adventure'. The Prep Parade will be in Gigum Hall starting at 8.40am until no later than 9.25am. Students can dress up as their favourite book characters, please ensure your child’s costume includes sun safe clothing (not sleeveless) and appropriate (closed) footwear is worn. We also look forward to having our Lady Gowrie Kindy and playgroup friends with us for this special occasion. We hope to see you there!
Maths – representing addition, subtraction and equal sharing
This term our Prep learners have been learning to represent practical situations that demonstrate addition, subtraction and equal sharing, using hands-on materials. Learners are also describing the result and effect of addition and subtraction (stating the total or remainder and observing that the initial collection has got larger or smaller). We are so proud of their clever thinking and how they are demonstrating their understanding in a range of ways. Here is an example from Prep I for demonstrating equal sharing. Students press the yellow sound button to hear a question asking them to share the toy frogs equally into 2 ponds. When students have attempted this, they press the blue button to hear the answer and check their work. What a fun way to learn about equal sharing!
Swimming
This week you will have received information regarding Term 4 swimming. Now is the perfect time to talk with your child about this exciting experience and practise dressing and undressing with independence. Your child will need to bring high visibility swimmers and sun shirt (not blue), a towel and thongs/crocs to wear to and from the pool. Goggles are optional. It is essential that all items are named and placed in a named swimming bag. All uniform items should also be named to avoid any mix ups when changing. If you have any questions about swimming, please see your class teacher.

Rapid Recall
This week I caught 1G in the middle of their rapid recall for Mathematics. There was some very clever and quick thinking from all students. Year 1 students all participate in daily mathematical practice. When students can recall mathematical facts and procedures fluently from memory, new concepts are more easily attained and teaching mathematics becomes efficient and effective.

Attendance is vital in Year 1!
Did you know? Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance at school is associated, on average, with higher student achievement..
A set routine can help
- have a set time to go to bed
- have a set time to get out of bed
- have uniform and school bag ready the night before
- have a set time for starting and finishing breakfast
- set a time for daily homework activities
- speak about school positively
- be firm, send your child to school every school day including their birthday and the last day of term!
If your child is unwell, they should stay home and rest. Please notify the office if your child is away or respond to the SMS you will receive if they are absent without explanation. If your child is well, please make sure they are at school so we can keep on learning! I will reach out to any families with children lower than expected attendance rates, this is to offer any supports that might be needed and work together to achieve regular school attendance.
Have a wonderful week everyone!

Every Day Counts at School
As we move towards the end of term, I would like to remind families of the importance of daily attendance at school. Assessment and learning continue right through until the end of term, so it is vital that if your child is well, they are present at school each day.
If your child will be absent for an extended period (for example, a planned absence of five days or more), please ensure you notify both the school office via QParents or emailing studentabsence@mangohillss.eq.edu.au and also your child’s class teacher. This helps us record the absence accurately and allows teachers to make any necessary arrangements to support your child in completing assessment tasks.
Hands-on Maths Fun!
In Mathematics this term, our students have been exploring measurement concepts, including capacity, length and mass. They have had a fantastic time engaging in hands-on activities such as scooping rice to calculate capacity, measuring the length of different classroom objects, and weighing items using scales. These practical experiences not only build their understanding but also make learning fun and memorable. We’ve included a photo of one of our students hard at work calculating capacity so you can see the joy in their learning! Families can also support at home by practising these skills in everyday situations, such as measuring ingredients while cooking, comparing the length of objects around the house, or weighing items on kitchen scales.
Thank you for your onging support and wishing you a wonderful week ahead.

Swimming
In Term 4, our Year 3 students will take part in their swimming program, running from Weeks 1–6. A consent and payment notification was sent via QParents last week, with both due by Tuesday, 17 September. Please note, students cannot attend without both consent and payment.
If you require assistance with payment, don’t hesitate to contact our administration team—we’re here to help.
Term 3 English
Last week I had the pleasure of joining Year 3 classes during their English lessons, and I’m delighted to share the wonderful progress our students are making in their speaking and listening tasks.
- 3E impressed with their strong use of modality in their presentations.
- 3C practised presenting to different audiences around the school, then reflected thoughtfully with peers on ways to improve.
It’s fantastic to see our students growing in confidence and capability—well done Year 3! Has your child shared their favourite event with you?

Maths
Purpose of the Unit: To represent, recognise and make connections between different types of fractions.
Here are some images of what our students have been learning this past week about fractions.
- They have been consolidating their knowledge of what a fraction is and the different types of fractions
- Equivalent: ½ ; 2/4
- Improper: 7/8
- Mixed: 2 ¾
- They have been representing fractions on number lines, within visuals

Fractions in real life applications.
You might like to find ways to practise and discuss fractions in every day experiences. Here are some ideas of how to do that:
Eating at a restaurant – dividing the bill/sharing portions
Shopping – calculate sales percentages
Cooking – recipes sometimes suggest ½ cup of sugar, ¾ teaspoon of salt. Explore different ways to measure so you reduce the washing up. Some recipes serve 2 people – explore ways to serve 3 people what fractions are used to adjust the ingredients accordingly. Consider creating a pizza and setting portions (fractions) for different toppings – ½ pepperoni, ¾ mushrooms, 6/8 capsicum.

Thank you for helping the school raise money for the PJ Day last week, it was greatly appreciated. All proceeds will go to the student council to help make improvements around the school.
On Thursday I am looking forward to seeing Yr. 5 students dress up for Book Week. Book Week is a great way to celebrate children’s favourite stories while having a bit of fun. Thank you for helping your kids prepare.
Mathematical Modelling
This week Year 5 students have begun looking at mathematical modelling to formulate and solve practical problems using a variety of operations.
An example of a common mathematical problem is below.
While this may appear to be a relatively straight forward problem it does involve complicated mathematical problems such as converting common fractions to decimal fractions, improper fractions & mixed numbers, understanding that multiplication rules and units of measurement.
While there are multiple ways to solve such problems helping students understanding the mathematical involved is an important life skill we regularly encounter.
Discussing a talking through practical problems as they occur is a great way of supporting children’s knowledge in this area.
Reminders
QParents: Permission & payment options are now available, in QParents, for the Term 4 Eureka Gold Rush Excursion.
Attendances:
Please remember to provide a reason in QParents for student absences. This helps us keep on top of our attendance.

Please be aware that only students who are fully enrolled are able to attend high school transition days. To ensure your child does not miss out, please complete enrolment paperwork as soon as possible.
Please find information attached about the upcoming Mango Hill State Secondary College half day transition. Please note, for catering, parents may order food for their child through the QKR app. Alternatively, students can take their own food for morning tea.
Engaging Safely Online
It has come to our attention that there are a growing number of Messenger concerns occurring online and out of school hours that are coming into the school environment and are impacting some members of our Year 6 cohort. Many of our students are regularly engaging online with peers and others through games, messages and social media. We highly recommend parents to continue to monitor their children's use of their devices and how they interact with them.
For helpful resources for parents regarding online safety, check out the eSafety commissioner website: https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents and further resources on https://www.thinkuknow.org.au/resources-tab/parents-and-carers.
We will continue education in the classroom about engaging safely and responsibly online.
Interschool Sport
We have continued to achieve some great results at our Interschool Sport Days. Our second Interschool Sports day for the term is this Friday. I’m sure our Year 6 students will continue to show the Mango Hill values of Teamwork and Respect while competing.
