School Opinion Survey
We have now had 20% parents/carers complete the SOS. If you are yet to do this, we’d appreciate your feedback. This survey can be done on your phone and should only take approximately 5 minutes. Thank you to those who have done this.
Awards Criteria
There was an omission in the Cultural Award Criteria. Please find attached the correct Cultural Gold Badge Award Criteria that will be used at the end of the year.
Criteria for the Cultural Award – Year 3 to Year 6 students – Students need to apply.

Support Staff week
This week we celebrate our support staff. This includes all roles outside that of teaching. We thank our teacher aides, social worker, school wellbeing professionals, cleaners, grounds officers and administration staff. Our support staff make a huge difference to the lives of our students, staff and community. We thank them for what they do, day in day out. They are passionate, committed and strive to make a difference. Enjoy the recognition because you deserve it!
Adopt a Cop
We are excited to announce that we have ‘Adopted a Cop’. We welcome Sergeant Dean Shore, who is also a parent of one of our students. We are proud to be a school that not only values strong educational foundations, but also meaningful connections with our wider community. Having Sergeant Shore join our school is an opportunity to strengthen the partnership between our students, staff, families, and local police.
At Mango Hill State School, we are guided by five key values: Teamwork, Respect, Innovation, Commitment, and Excellence. These values shape how we learn, how we treat one another, and how we grow together as a school community.
These are the same values we see reflected in the work of our local police officers, who serve and protect with dedication, compassion, and integrity. We are excited for our students to learn from Sergeant Shore, to engage in positive conversations about safety and leadership, and to see firsthand the power of community in action.
We thank you, for choosing to be part of our school journey, and we look forward to the positive impact your presence will have on our students. Welcome to the Team Mango family.
Boom Gate
Due to the number of people parking in the Kindy carpark in the afternoons, the boom gate will now be going down at 1.30pm. This will commence Monday 18 August. This will ensure this space remains as is intended, for our Kindy parents.

Focus of the Week
This week in Care Class we will be learning to Care for the Environment. We will be identifying the consistent predictable routines that help us to look after our school environment including how we recycle at Mango Hill.
These include:
- Ensuring all rubbish is placed in the correct bin
- How we use the Containers for Change bins
Consistent predictable routines help students to know what is expected of them at school, teaching these explicitly supports student engagement and learning.
Students will also share their creativity and innovation through designing new posters to support the Containers for Change program in our school.
Reading at Mango
Year 1 Word Reading
In Year 1, students have been building their word reading skills by continuing their learning of phonemes and graphemes. Students are excited to share their knowledge about split digraphs – a digraph is two letters that work together to make one sound and in a split digraph the two letters working together are split. For example, in hope the o and e are working together but are split by the p. The e is making the o say a long sound (or its name). You may know this as ‘magic e’. Year 1 are growing in confidence to apply these skills to decode and comprehend texts and the students are really seeing themselves as readers.

P&C News
A reminder that we have our Father's Day stall coming up on Thursday 4 September. This year we will only be running it on one day, so please pop this date in your calendars and remember to give your children money. It will be cash only.
We will also be looking for volunteers to help out on the day, so if you can spare an hour or two, we'd love to have you on board. Please email our Vice President, Melissa, at vicepresident@mhsspandc.com.au to let her know your availability.
Pyjama Day
Roll out of bed and straight into the fun! On Friday 15 August, we’re inviting all students and staff to wear their favourite pyjamas to school for Pyjama Day. Whether it’s a onesie, or a classic set of PJs, join us for a cosy day of comfort and community spirit. Don’t forget to bring a gold coin donation to support a great cause.
(Please remember: all outfits must be sun safe, and students must wear appropriate enclosed shoes for safety.)
Bullying No Way
Today we acknowledge the National Day of Action Against Bullying. The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Be Bold, Be Kind and Speak Up.’ We encourage students and adults to be courageous and take a stance against bullying. To do this, it’s important to understand what bullying is and what it isn’t.
Definition of Bullying from the ‘Bullying No Way’ website:
‘Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop if from happening. Bullying can happen in person or online via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious or hidden. Bullying behaviour is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying of any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not examples of bullying.’

Reading in Prep
Each Prep class engages in a daily Literacy block which involves revising and learning letter sounds, and reading and writing words with the sounds they know. This week I had the pleasure of visiting Prep I and was so impressed by the way the learners did their 'partner practice' - reading together. Our Prep learners know they need to say the sound to read the word and it is exciting to see this process becoming more fluent.
Art
Prep E have continued with their beautiful artworks ad masterpieces - here we can see a range of sunflower paintings, all different and equally wonderful! Well done Prep E.
Safety
This week we held an evacuation drill to ensure our learners know what to do in case of an emergency situation. We were very proud of the way Prep students moved calmly and quickly to their assembly point – great job Preppies!

Persuasive Procedures
Year 1’s have blown me away already this term with their application to writing procedures and adding some persuasion to convince someone to follow the procedure. Student’s are learning how to write connected sentences with words such as first, next and then. They are also learning to add relevant details and best choice words. This week I have had the pleasure of hearing some student’s share their writing to an audience of peers. Wow! Keep up the phenomenal work Year 1!

Book Week in Week 6
Friday 22nd August from 9:30-10:15, Year 1 and Year 2 will come together to celebrate our love of reading with the Mango Hill State School Book Week Parade. Students are invited to dress up as their favourite book character and join the fun. Parents are welcome to attend!
Have a wonderful week everyone!

Year 2 Literacy: Exploring Alternate Spellings
In Year 2 Literacy, our students have been diving deeper into the fascinating world of phonics by learning about alternate spellings for different phonemes.
A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in a word – for example, the /ay/ sound in day. Sometimes, one phoneme can be written in different ways. These written versions are called graphemes – the letters or groups of letters that represent a sound.
When we talk about alternate spellings, we mean one phoneme that can be represented by multiple graphemes. For example, the ‘long ay’ sound can be written as ay (play), ai (train), or a-e (cake).
Some of the alternate spellings our Year 2 students have been exploring include:
- Long ay (/ay/)
- Long ee (/ee/)
- Long igh (/igh/)
- Long oa (/oa/)
- Long oo (/oo/)
How you can help at home:
- Talk about the different ways a sound can be written.
- Spot words in books, signs, or packaging that show different spellings for the same sound.
- Ask your child to teach you the “rules” they’ve learned for each grapheme – children love being the teacher!
By noticing, discussing, and revisiting these sounds regularly, you’ll be helping your child strengthen their knowledge and make connections between spoken and written words.

Wishing you a fabulous week.

Book Week Parade
Friday 22 August (Week 6) we are holding our highly anticipated Book Week Parade. This year’s book week theme is ‘Book an Adventure’. We know the significance reading plays in our world and would love to see students dressed up to celebrate their love of reading. As always, sun safe and school appropriate costumes are required.
Playtime in Term 3
This term we are continuing with our fantastic lunch time play clubs, both indoors and outdoors. All students are welcome to attend clubs and participate in the fun. In less structured settings, it is more difficult for our students to navigate conflict. This term we have continued to learn about the High 5. (Talk Friendly, Talk Firmly, Ignore, Walk Away, Report) At home, you too can model this strategy. This could be done through role play, a conversation in the car or even unpacking the situation in the moment. A great skill that often goes unnoticed is how to respond when someone is attempting to use the High 5 on you.

4E gives Bike Education day a thumbs up!
In week 6 the following classes will go to Redcliffe PCYC for their day of Bike Education:
Monday 18 Aug – 4G
Tuesday 19 Aug – 4F
Wednesday 20 Aug – 4K
The centre has said that students may bring and use their bike helmet if it meets Australian Safety Standards. They will need to be able to see the Australian safety standard logo for the helmet to be used on the day.
Here are some more photos from last week’s excursion to the centre.

Attendance
Let’s take a look at how we are tracking with our attendance rate.
Here is the attendance rate at the start of this Term
Our celebrations are that we have a slight reduction in less than 85% attendance with a slight increase in the 90% - 95%. Let us continue to increase our attendance rate by coming to school every day.
At the start of the Term 3, I wrote that it would be a great celebration for us to reach 92% attendance rate. This will be more attainable if we look to increase attendance on Fridays. Attendance data shows that often Fridays have the highest absenteeism of the week.
Year 4 – let’s change one small thing and make Friday’s attendance a celebration. Parents and Carers, if there is a concern regarding Friday for your child, please make contact with your class teacher and discuss these concerns so that together we can work on making every day a great day to be at school.

Thank you to our Year 5 parents for preparing students so well for camp – your efforts helped set the tone for a fantastic experience.
Students loved the team challenge, raft building, rock climbing, circus skills and simply hanging out with their classmates. They showed excellent behaviour, demonstrating Care for Self and Care for Others throughout.
A special thanks to our amazing Year 5 teachers, who gave up personal time and worked around the clock to make it all happen. You well and truly earned that long weekend!

Learning in Italian
This term, our students have been exploring the theme "Made in Italy", focusing on famous Italian products, brands, and inventions. It was great to observe our Year 6 students this week learning about key vocabulary and using it to describe items, and talk about Italy’s influence in areas of fashion and design.
See some photos below.
Graduation fundraising
Every year at the Arts Fest, the Year 6 Graduation Committee have the opportunity to raise money for Year 6 Graduation by running the BBQ and selling baked goods.
If you are willing and able to volunteer at Arts Fest or support by providing baked goods for the bake sale, please email me at dxobr0@eq.edu.au . I will be in touch with all who have offered their time, soon.
