Community News

It’s been another fabulous week at Mango Hill State School. Students are continuing to put their best foot forward. The best thing about my job, besides working with such an amazing staff , is our students. I’ve been on crutches and our students have shown such care and concern for me. I have felt very cared for and looked after. Thank you, students. Thank you also to parents for reaching out. We have a wonderful, kind community.

Despite the protected industrial action on Wednesday, our Year 5 still managed to attend camp. A huge thank you to our teachers who made this possible. They have gone above and beyond to ensure our students didn’t miss out. From all accounts, I’ve heard that our students are having a fabulous time.
Before and After School
Playgrounds are out of bounds before school and after school. We appreciate your understanding with this.
Critical Friends Network
On Monday our school hosted approximately 25 colleagues from our CFN schools. They viewed part of our reading approach and provided us with feedback. The feedback was very positive which is heartening and highlights that we are on the right track! Thank you to all teachers who were involved and for sharing your practice. You are amazing at what you do.
Culture Inclusion
At Mango Hill State School, we know that strong communities grow from connection, understanding and inclusion, and ours is truly something special!
We’ve been exploring some of the data about our amazing school community, and here’s what we discovered:
- Over 60% of parents in our school community were born in a country other than Australia.
- More than 1 in 4 parents (26%) were born in India.
- Nearly half of our families (48%) speak a language other than English at home.
- Our parent community speaks over 60 different languages!
Mango Hill State School is bursting with cultural richness and diversity. What an incredible opportunity we have to learn from one another and grow together.
If English isn’t your first language, you can still stay fully connected as our newsletters and school emails can be translated with just a few clicks!
To translate the school newsletter, look for the TRANSLATE bar at the top of the page and select the language of your choice from the drop down box.
To translate our emails, simply copy and paste them into your favourite translation app or webpage.
Boom Gate
Due to the number of people parking in the Kindy carpark in the afternoons, the boom gate will now be going down at 1.30pm. This will commence Monday 18 August. This will ensure this space remains as is intended, for our Kindy parents.
Members of the School Council hold their positions for two years and the council meets once per term. If you would like to nominate to be a member of our School Council, please complete the nomination form attached and return to the office by 5pm August 27.
We would like to thank Amy Swalwell and Melissa Travers for the last two years of their tenure. We really appreciate everything you have done and continue to do for our school.Arts Fest Raffle

Focus of the Week
Reading at Mango
Prep Word Reading
In Prep, students have been building their word reading skills by continuing their learning of phonemes and graphemes. Students are excited to share their knowledge about digraphs – two letters that work together to make one sound, like ck,ss, ff, and ll and use this knowledge in their reading and writing. They've also been exploring the rules about when these digraphs are used, such as at the end of short words with short vowel sounds. It’s wonderful to see their confidence grow as they apply these skills when decoding.

P&C News
The P&C would like to take this opportunity to say goodbye to Kaitlyn in the cafe. She is heading off to the US to pursue her dreams of being a teacher. We wish her all the best and thank her for her hard work. Make sure you pop into the Sole Cafe this week to say goodbye, especially all the regulars (you know who you are)
We have our Father's Day stall coming up on Thursday 4 September. This year we will only be running it on one day, so please pop this date in your calendars and remember to give your children money. It will be cash only. We will also be looking for volunteers to help out on the day, so if you can spare an hour or two, we'd love to have you on board. Please email our Vice President, Melissa, at vicepresident@mhsspandc.com.au to let her know your availaiblity.
Our monthly meeting was held last night and sadly we only had one parent attend to represent 1200 parents (another one was an apology). As a committee we're genuinely interested in hearing your fundraising ideas or any other thoughts you have relating to the P&C, particularly following the disappointment of the cookie drive. Our goal this year was to raise $12000 to replace the bubblers at the school with state-of-the-art bubblers that would provide chilled water for our kids, but this seems an unachievable goal at the moment, which is why we want to hear from Team Mango parents and carers. Please send any thoughts/suggestions/ideas to the President, Belinda, at PandCPresidentMHSS@outlook.com. I look forward to hearing from you.
Canteen update
With the EKKA coming up, the Canteen will be doing a $10 EKKA meal deal! It will be available for lunch on Thursday 14 August, with orders being open from Monday 4 August and closing Friday 8 August at 5pm.
The meal deal will include:
Dagwood dog + chocolate crackle + glee
or
Vegetarian Burger + chocolate crackle + glee
Pyjama Day
Roll out of bed and straight into the fun! On Friday 15th August, we’re inviting all students and staff to wear their favourite pyjamas to school for Pyjama Day. Whether it’s a onesie, or a classic set of PJs, join us for a cosy day of comfort and community spirit. Don’t forget to bring a gold coin donation to support a great cause.
(Please remember: all outfits must be sun safe, and students must wear appropriate enclosed shoes for safety.)
Bullying No Way
Mango Hill State Secondary College

This week I have had the pleasure of visiting Prep E where they were learning the letter ‘j’. When our Prep learners learn letters, they learn the letter name, the sound it makes, how to form the letter, how to say the sound alongside other known sounds to read a word, (eg jam) and how to write words containing the letter and other known letter sounds - accurate spelling is not yet the goal, rather attemping to write words using known sound. Here are great attemps on the words 'jump' and 'jungle', great work Prep E, we're so proud of your efforts and achievement!
Art Incursion
This week and last week our Prep learners enjoyed engaging in an art workshop. We were so proud of how they listened and learned to the visiting teachers and had fun while producing some fabulous pieces. You can enjoy these pieces of art at our upcoming Arts Fest on 11 September.
Attendance
The winter months often bring illness which can result some days off school. Please respond to SMS messages if your child is away from school for any reason so we can update our attendance records accurately. Our goal is for every child to be at school each and every day that they are well enough to be here. Prep attendance overall has been strong throughout the year, if you require any assistance in this area, please reach out.

Timely Reminders
- All Year 1 teachers strongly encourage their students to unpack their own bags each morning. This includes their iPad, fruit snack, lunch and homework folder. Many Year 1 friends are thriving with their new responsibilities!
- Being at school every day, for the whole day, is vital. School time missed is learning time missed.
- iPads need to be checked by parents regularly and updated. iPads come to school switched off and fully charged. We don’t use our iPads before or after school, on school grounds.
- We love to represent Team Mango by wearing the correct uniform, with pride. Please reach out if you’re missing a uniform piece and you need a friendly financial hand to help. School jumpers in this winter weather are a must.
Term 3 Maths
One of the concepts Year 1 students are learning in Maths this term is to ‘solve addition and subtraction problems through Mathematical Modelling’. Thank you to Miss Lahey and 1D for showcasing their thinking to solve the below problem.
Have a wonderful week everyone!

Year 1 Deputy Principal

Year 2 Stepping into HASS Incursion
Our Year 2 students had a fantastic time exploring the past during the recent Stepping into HASS incursion. Through a range of hands-on activities, they discovered what life was like in days gone by. A huge thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers who joined us. Your support and enthusiasm helped make the day such a success. Enjoy the photos below capturing some of the highlights!

Preparing for the English Speaking Assessment
In English, students are learning how to present a persuasive speech — and you can help at home! Encourage your child to practise by trying to convince you of something, like why the family should go to the park, have pizza for dinner, or watch their favourite movie. Remind your child to give clear reasons to support their argument and to speak confidently with varying tone in their voice. These fun, everyday conversations are a great way to build your child’s speaking skills.
Wishing everyone a wonderful week ahead.

Maths Superstars in Year 3!
This week, I had the pleasure of visiting several Year 3 classrooms and was so impressed by the fantastic maths learning taking place.
Students have been exploring fractions through real-life contexts. In 3F, food was used to make fractions meaningful, while 3B tapped into Olympic excitement to engage learners. Over in 3I, students measured the capacity of containers using benchmarks—an excellent example of hands-on learning.
It’s been great to see such fun and practical maths experiences across Year 3—well done to our young mathematicians!
Golden Tickets – Line-Up Leaders
In the coming weeks, I’ll be on the lookout for students who are following our schoolwide expectations during transitions—lining up in the right place at the right time and entering or exiting classrooms calmly.
To support your child, please ensure they wait in the Piazza or middle years areas before school, away from doorways. When leaving buildings, students should walk calmly through their designated exit doors.
Deputy Principal
Fractions
During the week I was impressed and I admit a little bit surprised, that every student I asked, “What has been the best part of learning today? or 'tell me about something you have enjoyed about your day today?” 100% of the responses were given with a smile, “fractions”. What great teaching and learning experiences must be happening for such a response! Well done Year 4 teachers, you have made learning enjoyable and memorable.
English
In English our students are learning about presenting a persuasive speech. This unit of work too is being met with enthusiasm from students.
Here are some photos of 4B working on drafting their speech. These students are working in pairs and small groups.

When drafting their speech, students can retrieve information from the Learning Wall. They have access to a range of retrieval resources in order to ‘Bump up’ their work: ‘C’ to ‘B’, ‘B’ to ‘A’. This photo shows a student using prompts from a resource we call the ‘Scale’ which outlines the elements of the assessment task. This photo also shows feedback from their teacher – written on post-it notes to keep as a reference.
Part of the preparation process is to read the speech to a partner. Students listen to their partner’s speech and then give feedback based on set criteria. This process is then repeated for the other partner. Giving both students an opportunity to edit their work based on the provided feedback.
This last photo shows a combination of steps and resources:
1. Structure prompt for a persuasive speech
2 - Student work
3 - Teacher feedback – post it note
4 - The SCALE – highlighted areas (green = achieved and blue = next steps)
5 - Student feedback structure relating to the SCALE

Camp!
Our Year 5 students have had a great two days at Sunshine Coast Recreation Centre Currimundi this week. They have all enjoyed the activities and the wonderful weather we have been having. I'm sure they will have lots of stories to tell!

Year 6 Learning
It has been great to see our students solving practical financial problems, involving percentages and rational numbers. They have been justifying the best deals by formulating and solving problems. To help at home, be sure to ask your children to calculate percentage discounts off different items!
Year 6 Graduation – we need your help!
Our Graduation Committee have been working hard behind the scenes for a few months, planning ahead for a big celebration for our Year 6 students at the end of the year, as we farewell them from Primary School. To help us achieve our plans for the night, we need help with fundraising.
The Mango Hill State School Arts Fest, held on Thursday 11 September, is our opportunity to raise funds for Year 6 Graduation and your opportunity to help out. We need volunteers on the night to help out at our BBQ and to sell baked goods (and to bake the baked goods!). If you can spare even a small amount of time on the night to volunteer, or provide some baked goods, please reach out to me via email: dxobr0@eq.edu.au
Uniform
At Mango Hill State School we aim to demonstrate the value of respect by wearing our school uniform with pride. The majority of our students do this really well. However, we are seeing an increasing number of students wearing non-school jumpers. Let’s all make a considered effort to represent Team Mango with pride!

Curriculum News
“Quality reading requires quantity reading. Students must read not only well but also widely and extensively.… Quantity matters.” (Doug Lemov, author of Reading Reconsidered)
At Mango Hill State School, we encourage every student to become a lifelong reader. Throughout Term 3, not only are we continuing to support and inspire our students through our school-wide Literacy Blocks, we also have some exciting events such as the Premier’s Reading Challenge, Book Week, and our upcoming Book Fair! Together, we’re creating a culture where reading is celebrated and enjoyed by all. What’s your child’s next reading adventure? A simple question might open up a whole new chapter!
Book Week Parade
We are so excited for Book Week, which is coming up in Week 6! This is always one of the happiest weeks of the year as we celebrate our love of reading and dress up as our favourite characters.
Our Book Week Parades will be held in Gigum Hall as follows:
Thursday 21 August – Year 5 & Year 6 Parade 9:00–9:40am

- Year 1 & Year 2: 9:30-10:15am
- Year 3 & Year 4: 11:15- 12pm
Students are invited to dress up as their favourite book character and join the fun! Costumes don’t need to be fancy—think dress-up box treasures, creative DIY ideas, or something from the wardrobe at home.
Parents are warmly invited to come along and enjoy the parades with us. We can’t wait to see our school come alive with colourful characters and big smiles as we celebrate the magic of books together!
