We have had another wonderful week at Mango Hill State School. Our students are such a pleasure to teach and make me so proud to lead this great school.
School Opinion Survey
Each school family will receive one email invitation from the Department of Education to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey. Parents/Caregivers are encouraged to complete the survey as this information will provide valuable information about what our school is doing well and where we may need to turn our attention to. The survey will be sent out shortly and only takes approximately 7 minutes to complete. Your anticipated support is appreciated.
Excursions
This week has been another busy one. Our Year 3 students have been busy visiting the Caboolture Historical Village while our Year 2 students are participating in a HASS incursion. We wish our selected Year 5 and 6 students participating in the public speaking competition the best of luck. Good luck also to our Year 5 and 6 students representing our school at the interschool sports competition and to our Junior Choir representing us at the Pine Rivers Show. Next week 4B will attend the PCYC Bike Education program and our Year 5 students head to camp. Camps provide such a great opportunity for students to build independence and leadership skills in a supported manner but away from home. It’s a time that does take students out of their comfort zone in a good way. A huge thank you to staff for giving up their time away from their own family and loved ones to ensure students get to participate in this event.
On Monday 4 August we have approximately 25 educators from our Critical Friends Network visiting to view our whole school approach to reading and provide us with feedback. Our reading approach is based on the Simple View of Reading, in line with the latest version of the Australian Curriculum. As a school, we have had a tight focus on ‘Word Reading’. This includes; Prep – Year 2: phonics and phonemic awareness, Year 3 – 6: morphology. Our approach to reading is embedded through explicit instruction, backed by the Science of Learning research. this research unpacks effective principles of learning. These principles include:
- Breaking down learning into manageable parts
- Using explicit instruction techniques
- Collecting in the moment formative assessment (CFU- checking for understanding during the lesson) to ensure instruction is working
- CFUs can take the form of:
- Pair shares/turn and talks
- Mini-whiteboard tasks
- Cold calling
- Multiple choice or true/false
- Exit tickets
- Hinge questions
- Plus many more approaches
When talking to students about their reading and how they see themselves as readers, students are hugely positive. They see themselves as successful readers. This may not always be the reality but what it does show is that students are feeling successful with the delivery and their application of learning through pacier instruction, frequent opportunities to respond, and more bite-sized learning moments.
I encourage you to ask your child about how they are taught to read and how their teacher checks if they are understanding what they are learning. It’s great feedback for us to see if we are on track. Thank you to all teachers for the work they are doing in this area.
Processes to help create a healthy and safe school environment are an expectation of all schools. Schools are to implement strategies which are designed to minimise risks for both staff and students.
One of these expected management strategies is to conduct a practice drill each term and to vary scenarios and times as possible. This term we will be conducting an evacuation on August 12 2025 during lunch time. This means that the drill will be happening Tuesday Week 5.
Please discuss this event with your child/ren particularly if they require additional time to process.
Our teachers will be reviewing the drill process and will be ensuring that students know what to do when an evacuation is called during a lunch break.
A Evacuation Drill will have:
- Loud and continuous evacuation call out
- Students will be expected to stop play and move at a moments notice when the evacuation call out is sounded.
- The whole school will be moving to the designated muster area so there will be a lot of students moving in the same direction at the same time.
It is important for students to:
- Remember what to do when a drill is called during their lunch break
- Follow their teacher’s directions
- Stay with their teacher
- Stay quiet so they can hear the teacher’s directions
Members of the School Council hold their positions for two years and the council meets once per term. If you would like to nominate to be a member of our School Council, please complete the nomination form attached and return to the office by 5pm August 27.
We would like to thank Amy Swalwell and Melissa Travers for the last two years of their tenure. We really appreciate everything you do for our school.Date Claimers

Focus of the Week
This week in Care Class we will be learning to Care for Self by being regulated and knowing what it looks like to be regulated. We will revisit the ready scale and develop strategies to support us to be ready. If we are able to identify our feelings, we are then able to use strategies to make ourselves feel better again and get back into our learning. It is important to be able to identify how you feel and use strategies to self-regulate.
We want students to be read for the world, for play, for sport, for dancing, for life.
Reading at Mango
If your child is in Year 3 through to Year 6 at Mango Hill State School, you have probably heard them speak about their Morphology lessons.
What is Morphology and why is it important?
Morphology is the part of language that helps us understand how words are built. Just like LEGO blocks come together to make bigger structures, words are made up of smaller parts called morphemes. A morpheme is the smallest unit of meaning in a word. For example, in the word “unhappily”, there are three morphemes: “un-” (which means not), “happy” (the base word), and “-ly” (which tells us it’s an adverb). Understanding these parts helps children decode and spell words better, making reading and writing easier as they grow.
When children learn about morphology, they begin to see patterns in words. They recognize that adding -ed means something happened in the past, or that re- means to do something again, like in “replay” or “redo.” This awareness builds vocabulary, improves comprehension, and supports spelling. It’s like giving kids tools to “unlock” new words instead of memorizing them one by one!

P&C News
As you would be aware, our major fundraiser for this term, and for the year, was to be the cookie drive. It is with great disappointment that we advise this fundraiser will not be going ahead due to the lack of support shown by the Mango Hill school community. Of the 1200 families at the school, only 79 offered to support us. Thank you to those families, we appreciate your willingness to get involved. What this means is that the P&C will not be contributing as much as hoped for school upgrades and resources.
The P&C subsides the cost of some school events, such as the swimming carnival. As such, these costs may need to be passed onto our parents/carers.
Canteen update
With the Ekka coming up, the Canteen will be doing a $10 EKKA meal deal! It will be available for lunch on Thursday 14 August, with orders being open from Monday 4 August and closing Friday 8 August at 5pm.
The meal deal will include:
Dagwood dog + chocolate crackle + glee
or
Vegetarian Burger + chocolate crackle + glee
The next P&C meeting is scheduled for Monday 4 August 2025 at 6:30pm. We'd love to see you there and hear from you about what you'd like to see us doing and be willing to assist and support with.

Hearing screeners
We have two more opportunities for our Prep learners to participate in the hearing screeners this term. Please send payment through prior to the screening dates (5 and 15 August) to secure your child’s screener. Early detection of a hearing loss can lead to improved outcomes through early intervention and support – please ask your class teacher if you need any further information.
English
This term our Prep learners are retelling experiences by talking about who was there, what happened and how it made them feel. Here are Prep H exploring a range of words to describe feelings. Broadening children’s emotional vocabulary allows our learners to describe their experiences in more detail and gives the listener a deeper understanding of the experience overall. Our Preppies are doing a great job in retelling everyday and special experiences.

Students in Year 1 are off to a fabulous start this term learning about procedures and how to persuade others. Thank you to 1C for sharing your deconstructed Big Purpose and one of your co-constructed procedures. I can spot connected sentences, details about the recipe and a range of clever verbs!

Year 1 Awards Ceremony
I am incredibly proud of our Year 1 students, who demonstrated kindness and encouragement toward their peers during last week’s awards ceremony. Even when not everyone received an award, they showed remarkable resilience and maturity beyond their years. Their supportive spirit and positive attitude truly reflect the values we celebrate in our school community.
Final reminder for the Year 1 Phonics Check
Consent for the Year 1 Phonics Check is still active on QParents. There are also paper copies in the school office should you not have QParents. Please provide consent as soon as possible so we can make preparations for the check. Thank you to all parents who have done this already, we appreciate your support.
Have a wonderful week everyone!

Maths Learning in Term 3
It’s a busy and exciting term in Maths! Our Year 2 learners are exploring:
- Fractions – identifying and representing halves, quarters, and eighths
- Shapes – comparing and classifying two-dimensional shapes
- Measurement – using informal units to compare length, mass, and capacity
This term’s learning connects beautifully to the real world. At home, you might like to:
- Talk about fractions over a pizza or fruit platter
- Go on a shape hunt around the house or garden
- Involve your child in cooking, encouraging them to weigh ingredients or measure liquids
These hands-on experiences help deepen understanding and show children how maths is part of everyday life.
Here’s a snapshot of 2E students using their Learning Wall to revise shape features and classification strategies:
Wishing everyone a wonderful week ahead.

Yulunga Games
As part of our Speaking and Listening unit this term, students had the opportunity to participate in Yulunga Games—traditional games played by First Nations Australians. The experience provided a meaningful prompt for students to reflect on and discuss their favourite game. They shared their thoughts about the activity, explained what they enjoyed most, and gave reasons why others should try it too.

Caboolture Historical Excursion
This week, our first group of Year 3 students travelled north to the Caboolture Historical Village, with the second group set to visit on Thursday, 31 July. The excursion offered a fascinating glimpse into what life was like in the past. It also provided valuable links to both our Speaking unit and this term’s HASS learning, enriching the students’ understanding through hands-on exploration.
Deputy Principal
This term our unit of work has a Speaking and Listening focus.
The purpose of the unit is to create a spoken argument to share and extend ideas, opinions and information about a topic.
This is exciting as students will have an opportunity to build on the skills from Term 1 – building confident communicators.
In this unit, students are engaging in a powerful learning opportunity that strengthens both their speaking and listening skills — rehearsing persuasive arguments with a partner. While the task may seem simple at first glance, the process is rich with purpose and learning.
As part of our focus on oral language and written communication development, students are being supported to refine their persuasive techniques. Students are learning to speak clearly and confidently, but also about understanding how to tailor tone, pitch, pace, and volume to suit different audiences and purposes. Such skills are crucial in developing strong, articulate communicators who are confident expressing their point of view.
However, communication is not just about speaking — it is equally about listening. Therefore, students are learning to become active, respectful listeners. They are encouraged to use strategies such as asking clarifying questions, rephrasing their partner’s points, and acknowledging and building upon others’ ideas. These techniques allow them to check their understanding and foster deeper dialogue.
Moreover, by offering thoughtful feedback during rehearsals, students also enhance their critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving abilities. It’s a valuable step in preparing them for their final presentations — one that builds confidence, deepens learning, and supports peer-to-peer connection.
This unit gives students an opportunity to nurture their voice, helping them to understand that what they say matters — and how they say it can make all the difference.
The following photos show students working through whole class discussions and individual work as they formulate and shape their opinions about relevant topics. … in this case it involved considering the importance of water use and conservation.

What’s happening in Maths
From Prep to Year 6, students have been exploring the measurement of length, mass and capacity. These are essential skills that help children make sense of the world around them. Understanding how to measure helps students in many everyday situations, such as measuring ingredients when cooking a meal. These practical skills strengthen learning in maths and help students feel more confident when tackling real-life challenges. They’re not only valuable in the classroom but also play a key role in everyday jobs such as construction, cooking, farming, and design.
Calling all volunteers!
