Term 2 week 10 2025

As we reach the end of Term 2, I thank you for your continued support and partnership. This term has been one of strong growth and achievement across our school. We’ve seen improvements in student learning, better attendance, and a noticeable reduction in behaviour incidents. These successes are the result of the collective efforts of our dedicated staff, our students’ hard work, and your ongoing encouragement and support at home.
Reading
One of the highlights of this term has been our focus on implementing the new approach to teaching reading. We’ve embraced the Simple View of Reading, a framework that ensures students build both decoding skills and deep comprehension, aligning to the current version of the Australian Curriculum. In addition, we’ve begun implementing Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum (ACv9), helping us align our teaching with contemporary educational standards and high yield pedagogical practices.
We are so proud of what our students have achieved, and it’s been wonderful to see their confidence and engagement grow. Thank you for all the ways you support their learning, from ensuring they attend regularly to supporting them to complete their homework.
Happy Holidays!
As we head into the holidays, I encourage families to take this opportunity to rest, recharge, and spend time together. It’s also a good time to check in on your child’s school equipment and uniform, including ensuring they have full black school shoes and the correct school jumper/jacket, and make any updates or replacements needed before Term 3. We look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for another 48 days of purposeful learning.
Report cards
Reminder- Semester 1 report cards will be emailed to families in Week 1 of Term 3. Once you’ve had the opportunity to read through your child’s report card, please feel welcome to contact their teacher if you have any questions or would like to talk more about how you can support your child’s learning.
NAIDOC Week
This week we celebrate NAIDOC Week which is held in the first week of July each year. We recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We will be holding a special whole school assembly on Friday 27 June at 9.00am in Gigum Hall. Parents are welcome to attend.
This week has been all about athletics. We have held numerous events already. Thank you to parents and carers for supporting these events, with plenty more to come throughout the week. Well done to all students who participated. Thank you to our amazing PE team, Mr Nick Hills, Mr Tyson Newell, Mr Callum Lisha and Ms Bec Wilson, for their hard work and dedication. Focus of the Week
This year marks a huge milestone for NAIDIC as it is the 50th year of honouring and celebrating Indigenous voices and cultures. This year's theme "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy," not only celebrates the achievements of the past but shines a light on the youth and leaders of the future.
Students will attend a NAIDOC week assembly on Friday and will partake in the shared singing of the song 'Inanay'.
Reading at Mango
Comprehension is the reason for reading. If readers can read the words but do not understand or connect to what they are reading, they are not really reading.
Reading comprehension is the ability to understand, connect with, and think critically about what is being read. It involves not just recognizing words, but also grasping the meaning of sentences, understanding the overall message or story, and making inferences or predictions. Strong comprehension allows children to learn new information, follow directions, and enjoy reading. This skill depends on reading fluency—the ability to read words accurately, quickly, and with expression—because fluent readers don’t have to work as hard to decode each word. According to cognitive load theory, our brains have a limited capacity for processing information. If a child is using most of their mental energy just to figure out the words on the page, there’s less brainpower left to understand what the text actually means. Building fluency helps reduce this mental load, making comprehension easier and more natural.

This week our Prep learners will attend their second whole school assembly on Friday where we will celebrate NAIDOC week. This year the focus is on the strength of Indigenous communities, the vision of their leaders, and the enduring legacy they are creating. In Prep G, the class has been learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait cultures through art. Here are some clay creations made using stamps highlighting some symbols used within each culture.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership this semester, I hope you have a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing you for Term 3.

End of Term 2 – Year 2 News
As Term 2 comes to an end, we want to say a big congratulations to all of our amazing Year 2 students for their hard work, perseverance and positive attitude over the past ten weeks. From exploring exciting topics in English and Maths to developing their confidence in writing, reading and problem-solving, our Year 2s have shown fantastic growth. We’ve also loved seeing their creativity shine through in the arts and their curiosity blossom during science and HASS.
Thank you to our Year 2 families for your ongoing support. Whether it's helping with homework, reading at home or simply encouraging your child to do their best each day, your involvement makes a big difference. We hope the school holidays offer you a chance to relax and enjoy some well-earned family time.
A reminder that our Junior Sports Carnival is happening this Thursday 26 June. Year 2 students will be participating in a range of athletics-based activities on the oval from 12:45pm to 2:15pm. Please ensure your child comes prepared for the day with a hat and water bottle. We’d love to see parents and carers there cheering on our young athletes. Your support always makes the day extra special!
Lastly, don’t forget our Year 2 Award Ceremony will be held on Tuesday 22 July at 9:00am in Gigum. If your child is receiving an award, you will receive an email notification by the end of this week.
