As we move through the term and edge closer to the end of it, it's not uncommon for students to feel fatigued—especially with the combination of ongoing assessments, cooler weather, and the daily demands of school. This time of year can challenge even the most motivated learners. At home, you can support your child by helping them maintain a consistent routine, encouraging regular breaks when doing homework, ensuring they get enough rest, and keeping communication open about how they’re feeling. A little extra encouragement, warmth, and structure can go a long way in helping them stay focused and finish the term on a strong note. We want all students finishing the term, continuing to display the Four Cares – Self, Others, Learning and Environment.
Reporting
Academic report cards offer a clear overview of your child’s learning and achievement at the end of each semester. They’re designed to give you a strong understanding of what your child has been learning, how they are progressing, and where they may benefit from further support or extension. These reports are part of our commitment to keeping you informed and involved in your child’s education.
As shared last week, this year, you may notice slight changes to your child’s report card. For some Learning Areas, students have been taught and assessed so you’ll see a summary of learning, an effort rating, and a level of achievement. Other subjects were taught but will be assessed in Semester 2. In these cases, you’ll see a summary of learning and an effort rating only. Please refer to the relevant Deputy Principal section to see which subjects this applies to for your child.
The school will be running a parent information session outlining information about report cards. This will be held on Monday 23 June 8.30am in Wandani. We encourage parents to attend.
Containers for Change
Our Sustainability Leaders are doing an incredible role training everyone on how to use the containers for change bins. A big thank you to our P&C for helping with this initiative. They have donated $3000 to our school. You can help by encouraging your child to recycle their drink containers using the containers for change bins.
Camp
This week we have our second cohort of Year 6 students attending camp. Year 6 camp is a valuable opportunity for students to build independence, resilience, and confidence in a supportive environment. It strengthens friendships and fosters teamwork through shared experiences and challenges. Camp activities often push students out of their comfort zones, helping them grow personally and socially. Most importantly, it creates lasting memories that mark a special milestone in their final year of primary school. A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated teachers who gave their time and energy to support our Year 6 camps. Being away from their own families to care for and guide our students is truly appreciated. Your commitment makes these unforgettable experiences possible.
Concerts
Next week we are holding our mid-year Dance Concert for Year 2 and Year 4 students plus the eisteddfod team, dance clubs and Junior Concert will perform. We hope to see as many parents and families in attendance. We are also holding our mid-year Music Gala Night. The African Drumming group, senior choir and excellence choir will also be dazzling us with their talent. Both these events will be held in Gigum Hall. We will be asking for gold coin donations as we aim to purchase more chairs for our hall as we currently have to hire chairs for some of our larger events. Remember this is a donation only, there is no mandate to make a donation. If you can, if you wish, it would be appreciated. Through last year's donations we were able to raise $1650 and purchase an additional 25 chairs.
A big thanks to our Art's team Mrs Kostoglou, Mrs Almond, Mrs Morrell, Ms Nicolopoulos, Ms Bogdan and Ms luke for all their effort they put in behind the scenes and on the night.

Focus of the Week
This week in Care Class we will be focusing on Care for Learning by being regulated and knowing what it looks like to be regulated. Self-regulation is managing tension from environmental stressors and the ability to return to a calm state.
It is important to be able to identify how you feel and be able to communicate these needs to others. Throughout the day your feelings might fluctuate, and it is okay to be at different points on the Ready Scale. What matters is being able to identify how you feel and what strategies work for you to self-regulate.
Reading at Mango
Vocabulary: the understanding of word meanings
Beginning readers use knowledge about words to help them make sense of what they’re reading. The more words a reader knows, the more they are able to comprehend what they’re reading or listening to.
Talking to and reading with your child are two terrific ways to help them hear and read new words.
Sharing a new word with your child doesn’t have to take a long time: just a few minutes to talk about the word and then focus back on the book or conversation. Choose which words to talk about carefully — choosing every new word might make reading seem like a chore. The best words to explore with your child are ones that are common among adult speakers but are less common to see in the books your child might read.
When introducing new words to your young learner, keep the following four helpful hints in mind:
- Provide a simple, kid-friendly definition for the new word:
Enormous means that something is really, really big.
- Provide a simple, kid-friendly example that makes sense within their daily life:
Remember that really big watermelon we got at the grocery store? That was an enormous watermelon!
- Encourage your child to develop their own example:
What enormous thing can you think of? Can you think of something really big that you saw today? That’s right! The excavator in the Prep area was enormous! Those tires were huge.
- Keep your new words active within your house.
Over the next few days and weeks, take advantage of opportunities to use each new vocabulary word in conversation.
Take the time to share new words and build your child’s vocabulary. You’ll be enormously glad you did!
P&C News
We’d like to congratulate all our Spelling Bee winners – great job everyone! And even if you didn’t win a prize, you’re still a winner for giving it a go! Everyone’s effort was outstanding!
The next fundraising event we have is a sausage sizzle for the Sports Days on 24 and 25 June 2025, from 9:00am until approximately 1:00pm. If you have a spare half hour or so, we’d love you to come and help! We had some amazing sausage sizzlers at our Election Day BBQ, so if you fancy yourself as a bit of a sizzler, please come along. And if you were one of our previous sizzlers, we’d love to have you back! Email PandCPresidentMHSS@outlook.com and let us know which day and times you might be available to help.

Hearing screeners
We have had a great response to the offer of hearing screeners which will take place in Term 3. It's not too late to respond, simply return the consent form and questionnaire by Friday 19 June. Once forms are received, an invoice for $20 will be issued. Please reach out to your teacher if you need a spare.
Spare Clothes
Please remember to send your child with a spare pair of clothes each day. This is helpful for accidents but also if your child gets extra dirty while at play. If your child has borrowed spare clothes from the office this year, please wash and return the clothes to the office as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the office is out of spare clothes at this time, and this may mean you are called to bring spare clothes for your child should they need.
Prep Reporting
We report in line with K – 12 Framework requirements, aligned to the Australian Curriculum version 9. For English, Maths and Health and Physical Education (HPE), students have been taught and assessed so you’ll see a summary of learning, an effort rating, and a level of achievement. Other subjects are experienced and for these, you will see a summary of learning and an effort rating only.

Student wellbeing
As we approach the end of term, our Year 2 students are working incredibly hard to complete their final assessments for the semester. We’re proud of their focus, determination, and effort and recognise that it can be a demanding time. This week provides a great opportunity to check in with your child and acknowledge how much they’ve achieved this semester. Families play a vital role in supporting student wellbeing, especially during busy periods like this. Helping your child maintain healthy routines—such as getting plenty of sleep, eating nutritious meals, staying hydrated, and arriving at school on time—can make a big difference to their focus and energy levels. Encouraging regular movement or outdoor play, creating calm spaces for downtime at home, and offering a listening ear when they need to talk are all valuable ways to support them. A little reassurance and consistency of daily routines can go a long way in helping students feel confident and prepared to finish the term strong. Thank you for partnering with us to support your child’s success.
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead.

8 & 9 Years Athletics Carnival
On Tuesday 24 June (Week 10), we will be hosting our 8 & 9 Years Athletics Carnival. Our students have been actively developing and refining their athletics skills during their PE lessons in preparation for the event. They have also been familiarising themselves with the format of the Athletics Carnival, which differs slightly from the Prep, Year 1, and Year 2 Carnivals. We are all looking forward to an exciting day full of energy, sportsmanship, and great achievements!
Multimodal Presentations
This term, our students have been exploring a variety of informative texts to create multimodal presentations on habitats. This unit has been highly engaging, as students have learned the structures of informational texts while expressing their creativity through digital presentations. They look absolutely fantastic!
Semester 1 Reporting
This year, you may notice slight changes to your child’s report card as we move to the K – 12 Framework, aligned to the Australian Curriculum version 9. For some Learning Areas, students have been taught and assessed so you’ll see a summary of learning, an effort rating, and a level of achievement. Other subjects were taught but will be assessed in Semester 2. In these cases, you’ll see a summary of learning and an effort rating only. Finally, we send our warmest wishes to Ms. Reade as she begins her maternity leave this week. Thank you for the incredible care and support you've given to Year 3—it has meant so much to all of us. We’re so excited for this next chapter in your life and can’t wait to meet your little one!

Australia Zoo Excursion
Why are we going?
To consolidate students’ understanding of food chains and food webs from our Science lessons. This excursion will also lead into HASS in Semester 2 and build understanding of habitat types, key features and the importance of sustaining these environments.
Departure Time: Please arrive at school by 8.00am so that the bus may leave at 8.15am
Returning to school: 3.30pm
What to wear: Formal school uniform including full black shoes and white socks
What to bring: Hat, water bottle, packed lunch (NB: no fridges are available on the day) school bag
Please remember to organise transport home as the students will be returning to school at approximately 3.30pm
Our school day
Our school day begins with the first bell at 8:30am, giving students time to unpack, connect with friends and staff, and ease into their morning routines. The second bell rings at 8:45am, signalling the start of formal learning and when the roll is marked.
Arriving by 8:30 am helps your child start the day calmly and confidently, fully prepared for the learning ahead. If your child arrives after 8:45am, please collect a late slip from the office before heading to class so we can update the roll accordingly.
Regular and on-time attendance plays a big role in your child’s success at school—every day counts! Once the class is opened up and students are welcomed in the day has begun. Arrival after this time, means that your child is playing catch up with making connections, getting messages about the day etc. Late arrival often means that valuable learning time has been missed.

Please refer to the table below that outlines this in more detail for Year 5.
Academic Achievement
Well done to all students who have been working diligently on their information reports in English. The students have been building their content specific knowledge of tsunamis, floods and bushfires and are now learning how to present this knowledge in an information report. A special shout out to the students who have been exploring how to engage an audience through the use of Keynote and green screen technology.
Camp
Last week you would have received information regarding the Year 5 Camp. Please check your emails for information and QParents to provide permission. Thank you to the parents who have already provided this. Teachers have also provided students with a swimming and dietary requirements information slip. If this could be returned to the classroom teacher ASAP it would be appreciated.
Instrumental Music / Camp
Some students will be affected with a clash between an instrumental music excursion and the Yr 5 Camp. Unfortunately due to availability and scheduling, we were unable to avoid this clash. If this impacts your child, please reach out to the classroom teacher and the instrumental teacher to indicate your plans. We will endeavour to make arrangements to accommodate students to the best of our ability.
Attendance
Thank you for your continued support to ensure positive attendance. We understand that kids get sick and sometimes there are unavoidable absences, however, we aim for all students to have attendance rate of over 92%. If your child is having difficulties maintaining a high attendance rate please reach out to the teacher or myself so we can provide support.
Have a great week!

Term 2 English Assessment
As we near the end of a busy and productive term, it’s a great time to acknowledge the incredible effort and dedication shown by both students and teachers. Across the school, our focus on the Australian Curriculum Version 9 for English continues to strengthen, with students rising to the challenge of new and engaging assessment tasks.
Students have worked exceptionally hard on their Reading and Viewing assessment and should feel proud of their efforts. These tasks have not only celebrated students’ reading achievements but also provided teachers with valuable insights to guide next steps in teaching word reading and language comprehension.
Most classes are now wrapping up their writing assessments, with students from Prep to Year 6 creating informative texts that showcase their growing ability to use topic-specific vocabulary and write with a clear audience in mind. It’s been wonderful to see students apply their knowledge in creative and purposeful ways.
Check out these happy snaps of our students proudly sharing their learning. Our clever little Preppies created information reports on Australian animals, our bright and busy Year Fours wrote magazine articles about influential conservationists, and our focused, hardworking Sixers produced biographies on individuals who have migrated to Australia and made a positive impact in the community. Take a moment to ask your child what they wrote about in their informative writing assessment. We have so much to be proud of!

AR Millionaire
Congratulations Luke from 4J! Well done on becoming an AR Millionaire. Keep up the great reading!!

A huge thank you to each and every one of our wonderful volunteers who have generously given their time to help cover books in the library this term. We are so grateful for your support!
If you’d like to get involved, we’ll be welcoming volunteers again in Term 3. It’s a great way to meet others in the Mango Hill State School community and make a difference.
We appreciate any time you can spare between 8:30am–12:30pm on a Monday. Please note, all volunteers must have completed the school’s Volunteers Induction.

Last week, Eva from Year 6 represented Metropolitan North at the 10-12yr Girls Queensland School Sport State AFL Championships. Eva started playing AFL at MHSS two years ago and in that short time has now progressed to the top level for AFL in her age group, which is a magnificent achievement.
In some absolutely wonderful news, the Met North team finished in 3rd place with Eva picking up a Bronze medal and from all reports played extremely well. We are super proud of her commitment to AFL and it’s a great reward for her hard efforts over the previous two years.
