We are in full swing of the busyness of Term 2. This week our school has hosted Berry Street Training and continue to train our new staff in this trauma informed approach. This approach focuses on strengths-based strategies that are designed to engage all students in learning. You might hear your child or child’s class teacher talk about strategies such as morning circles, ready breaks, ready check-ins, positive primers, unconditional positive regard and so on. Our ultimate goal is to have students regulated, engaged, feeling safe and connected, to allow our students to thrive. The Berry Street Educational Model is our whole school approach to allow this to occur.
Beginner Band Blitz
Last week many of our students attended the Beginner Band Blitz. From all accounts, our students had a wonderful day and represented our school well. A big thank you to our staff for making this such a valuable day.
Junior Cross Country
We also held our junior cross country. Well done to all students for having a go and representing your house with pride. Thank you to Mr Lisha and our PE team for organising this event. Thank you also to our parents/carers/friends and families for supporting this event.
Lock Down Drill
Monday Week 5, we will be holding a practise Lock Down. The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority and as such we hold these events to allow us to know what to do in the event of an unlikely emergency.
Car Park
Our front and back carpark/drop off zones will always be busy at peak times. We have close to 1600 students entering and exiting our school. A huge thank you to the majority of our parents/carers/families for following signed rules and staff directions. When we follow these directions, our carpark flows. Our carpark is extremely busy for around 15 minutes at the start and end of the day. Please plan your day and allow for approximately 15 minutes to enter/exit the school during these peak times. Becoming frustrated with staff and fellow drivers won’t get you in and out of the school faster. Please respect our staff and follow their directions. They are doing a job to assist you. Of late, a few of our parents have been on their phone during these peak times. Safety of our students and staff will always be our number one priority so if you are using your phone, please use it hands free to allow you to be alert.
Early Collection of Students
Please refrain from coming to collect children early at the end of the day to avoid the peak times of the carpark. The volume of parents doing this, has increased. This creates unnecessary work for our administration team and more importantly, interrupts the learning of children. I have requested that our administration team avoid putting messages over the loud speaker for children to come to the office, unless in an absolute emergency. The sheer number of announcements is interrupting our teachers’ teaching and students’ learning. If you need to collect early, where possible, please have prior arrangements organised. Thank you for your anticipated understanding.
Thank You
Thanks to our committed P&C and parent/family volunteers for holding our annual Mothers’ Day stall. Our students love ‘shopping’ for their mums. I get a kick out of seeing their joy and pride in being able to spoil their mums! Huge thanks to Mel for organising this.
Staff Leaving
Hannah Bishop, our wellbeing professional, has commenced maternity leave. I wish Hannah all the best and thank her for all that she does for students and families. A recruitment process is being undertaken and once I know Hannah’s replacement, I will be sure to inform our community.
Spelling Bee
This is a major fundraiser of our P&C. Last year we raised $20,000. We hope to match this amount or even better it. Our P&C always prioritises funds to our school for much needed resources or projects so funds will be well spent. We would raise over $30,000 if every student raised $20. If you are able, your support would be appreciated. There are lots of amazing prizes up for offer.
Uniforms
As the weather begins to cool, we remind families that wearing our school uniform with pride remains an expectation. Students should continue to wear navy blue jumpers or jackets, which are available from the uniform shop. Navy pants, leggings, or stockings are also part of our winter uniform. We ask that students do not wear clothing in other colours, as maintaining a consistent uniform supports our sense of school identity and pride. If your family is experiencing financial difficulty, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help.

Focus of the Week
This week we are learning to show Care for Learning by understanding good stress and showing resilience when receiving feedback.
Good stress is when you confront a challenge, you believe you can rise to.
Good stress is the type of stress you feel when you're excited. Your pulse quickens but there is no threat or fear. You might feel this type of stress when you ride a roller coaster or compete in a game.
Bad stress happens when you face a problem and think you can’t solve or succeed.
How can you cope with stress?
1. Focus on the things that can be controlled
2. Make healthy choices - food, exercise and sleep
3. Use positive self-talk - focus on the postitives
4. Stay calm
5. Talk to an adult or friend you trust
These strategies can help you feel better.
Reading at Mango
The Big Six aka ‘The Components that contribute to Reading’
Oral language: provides the foundation for reading and writing Reading is a complex process that involves the integration of these components.
Phonemic awareness: the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) within words.
Phonics: the relationship between letters and sounds used to decode words when reading, and encode words in spelling.
Fluency: the ability to read with accuracy, automaticity and prosody; fluency is an outcome of the components of reading.
Vocabulary: the understanding of word meanings.
Comprehension: understanding the meaning of written text; comprehension is an outcome of the components of reading.
Research has shown that these six components contribute to successful beginning reading. They aren’t sequential, the six skills constantly overlap.
How can you incorporate the Big Six into your everyday?
The hourglass is wider where there is more room for creativity. Let your child guide you with their interests!
P&C News
Mother's Day stall
On Thursday 7 and Friday 8 May the P&C held their annual Mother's Day Stall. The P&C love doing this event not as a fundraiser but for the joy it brings the children. We love to see the delight on the children's faces as they painstakingly choose an item or two for their special someone who they call Mum.
We would like to thank our hardworking volunteers who assisted over the two days -
P&C President - Belinda and P&C Treasurer - Radhika, Kerry, Sarah, Vivianne, Kylie, Sue, Tammy, Melissa R, Kelli, Malvi, Diane, Amy, Jaclyn and Ying.
A special thank you to the P&C Vice president, Melissa, who has spent the past couple of months purchasing and packing all the gifts in preparation.
We would also like to give a special mention to Helping Hands who nominated two of their staff to volunteer; thank you to Jodie and Shelley.
The stalls made $2300 which will go towards our donation to the school and will help the supply of key resources for our students.
The P&C also held a Mother's Day Raffle with the prize being won by Ariella from 6I. Congratulations, we hope your Mum loved the hamper!
We hope all Mums loved their gifts as much as the kids loved choosing them.

Next Fundraiser
The next P&C fundraising event will be for the State of Origin on 28 May 2025. This will be a 'wear your team colours' day and each student who chooses to participate will be asked to donate a gold coin.
In addition to this, the Canteen will have special State of Origin meal packs for $10. These meal packs must be pre-orders and will include a mini pizza (choose from either cheese or ham and cheese), garlic bread, a popper, and a choice of a blue or maroon cupcake. Ordering for these meal packs will be open from 14 May and close on 23 May 2025.
Next P&C meeting
The next P&C meeting is scheduled for Monday 16 June 2025 at 6:30pm. We'd love to see you there!
Following this, our August meeting will be held on 4 August at 6:30pm.
Kind regards,

Word Reading
In Prep we have been learning letters, one set at a time, in order to read and write. Prep classes do a literacy block most days of the week where this work is broken down into manageable chunks and delivered using familiar, predictable routines. A letter is introduced with its name and sound, and students learn how to write the letter, read words using a small group of known letter sounds and write simple words using known sounds. Here are some photos of Prep B doing some great work with the letter C and letters they have already learned.

Art
There is so much creativity going on in our Prep rooms with pieces of art related to the English unit of work on Australian animals. Prep E created some emu masterpieces by potato printing and they look amazing! Keep an eye out for more great art works coming up both in the classrooms and in the newsletter.

Playgroup News
If you have a Prep aged child for 2026 or younger, why not come along to playgroup every Friday from 8.45-9.30am. All welcome.

Cross Country
Congratulations to all Year 1 students on a successful Cross Country! Everyone displayed sportsmanship and the four cares throughout the event. Thank you to those parents/carers that also came to support and cheer on the students.

Year 1 Maths
This term in Maths, Year 1 students are looking at how to partition two-digit numbers. Partitioning refers to the ability to think about numbers as made up of 2 or more parts. I was so impressed by how Mrs Orole and her team in 1F have made their Maths learning visible! Thanks for sharing 1F and keep up the great work.

Have a great week everyone.

The Importance of Nightly Reading
In Year 2, building a love of reading is just as important as learning how to read. We encourage families to set aside time each night for reading at home—both for enjoyment and to support the development of essential decoding skills. Your child can access their decodable readers through the online DRA platform each week, which is an important part of their learning. There was a recent password reset required and teachers are in the process of sending home new login details for all students. If your child can not access DRA, please reach out to their teacher. Reading decodable texts through DRA daily helps build fluency and confidence, while sharing a favourite bedtime story together nurtures a lifelong love of books. If you're looking for some new stories to enjoy at home, you can find your nearest local Street Library at www.streetlibrary.org.au
English UpdateOur Year 2 students are thoroughly enjoying learning all about Space in preparation for their reading and writing assessments. Your child would love to share with you some interesting facts that they have been learning. Take a moment out this week to ask your child to share with you their most interesting facts about the solar system! In week 7 students will commence their assessment work.
Have a great week.

Lunch Times in Year 3
We’re thrilled to share that our Year 3 students are now transitioning back to the Senior Playground, multi-purpose courts, and the soccer field at both play breaks! These spaces offer renewed opportunities for active play, teamwork, and social connection. Students will also continue to enjoy access to the piazza during break times.
Our dedicated teaching staff have been actively supporting this transition, guiding students through the expectations for each area and reinforcing respectful and responsible behaviour. We’re proud of how well our Year 3s are adapting and embracing these new play environments.
Spotlight on Learning: Morphology in Action!
Has your child mentioned the 1-1-1 or 2-1-1 Doubling Rule at home? You might be surprised by how confidently they can explain and apply these strategies!
Over the past fortnight, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting classrooms and observing our students in action during their new morphology lessons. I’m truly impressed by the remarkable progress they’re making. With explicit teaching and clear structure, students are not only learning the rules and origins of words—they’re applying them with confidence.
These lessons are fast-paced, highly engaging, and give students multiple opportunities to demonstrate their understanding. It’s a joy to hear the rich and precise language they’re using as they talk about word structure.
Important Dates – Upcoming Events
A reminder that our Science Street incursion is coming up on Thursday 29 May and Friday 30 May. Cost is $18, with payment and consent due by Wednesday 21 May. Students cannot participate without both.
Deputy Principal
Beginner Band Blitz
Last Wednesday forty of our students participated in the Concert Band Beginners Band Blitz. Thirty-seven of these students were Year 4 students.
The day was amazing. Our students were supported by a wonderful team of teachers. Unfortunately Miss Nicolopoulos wasn’t able to join us on the day due to an injury. Miss Nicolopoulos, the students missed you! Amy Ritter, Mrs. Claire Morrell were part of a great team who worked tirelessly throughout the day supporting the students. A special thank you to our Mango Hill teachers, Mrs. Ritter and Mrs. Morrell for their amazing work on the day.
Wednesday was a busy day. The program ran from registration at 9.00 to a performance finishing at 3.45 p.m. Here is a brief outline:
- Get to know you and the day – three schools were in attendance (Mango Hill SS, Bounty Boulevard SS and North Lakes College)
- Orchestral work
- Sectional work
- Performance rehearsals

I’m looking forward to learning more about Mango Hill State School’s Spelling Bee. I’ve heard it was a great event last year. A fundraiser and learning all rolled into one – so good!
Looking forward to seeing the total money raised by Year 4. Parents and Carers please assist us with this event as the money raised is given to the school as funding support by our hard working P&C.

Maths - Factors and Multiples
This week students have been learning about factors and multiples.
Factors are numbers that can be multiplied together to get another number.
Multiples are numbers that can be divided by another number without leaving a remainder.
Understanding factors and multiples helps students determine if one number is divisible by another. Students are also starting to learn some strategies to ‘test’ their answers such as the ‘Divisibility by 3 test’.
Morphology
During morphology lessons students are building their knowledge of base words and prefixes / suffixes.
This week students have been focussing on the prefix ‘in’ meaning opposite or into.
Students can then use this knowledge to build and understand knew words such as the example below.
ThinkUKnow
It was great to see our students engage in ThinkUKnow this week learning ways to stay safe online. Thank you to Tara for sharing this valuable information and equipping students with the skills they need to know now and into the future.

Learning in Year 6
It has been wonderful seeing our Year 6 students completing Morphology lessons in their classrooms. Last week our students learnt about the prefix -anti, and how it changes the meaning of words. The morpheme means the opposite of or working against and it comes from the Greek origin. Be sure to ask your children about some words with this prefix and what the meaning of the word means.

At Mango Hill State School, our teachers use evidence-based practices aligned with the Science of Reading to build strong foundations in word reading and language comprehension from Prep to Year 6. We know that developing background knowledge and vocabulary is key to reading success, and we’re committed to ensuring every child becomes a confident, skilled reader.
Across the school, students are creating vocabulary walls to proudly display new words they’re learning to support reading and enhance their writing.
Why not ask your child about the most interesting word they’ve learned so far this term?
