Community News

Thank you to everyone who attended our ANZAC Day ceremony. Our student leaders did an outstanding job running the event with confidence, and we are incredibly proud of the way all our students conducted themselves throughout the service. Their respectful presence reflected the values we strive to uphold as a school community and made the ceremony a meaningful occasion. Our staff did such a wonderful job in teaching our students the importance of this solemn occasion. A big thank you to our school choir and Mrs Almond for her efforts. Many people have commented how fabulous our choir was on this morning. Thank you to sergeant Richardson for assiting us with this commeration. Thank you also to our student leaders and their families in representing our school at the Kallangur Service on Friday. Once again, I was reminded of what a privilege it is to lead this great school.
P&C News
A reminder our dedicated P&C executive are holding a barbeque at the election day. They would love your support, even if it’s just for an hour. Please email PandCPresidentMHSS@outlook.com if you are able to assist on the day. If you are unable to assist, please stop by and purchase a sausage or a drink. There will be meat and vegetarian sausages available.
Spelling Bee
This week, students will bring home a Spelling Bee card. This is a major fundraiser of our P&C. Last year we raised $20,000. We hope to match this amount or even better it. Our P&C always prioritises funds to our school for much needed resources or projects so funds will be well spent. We would raise over $30,000 if every student raised $20. If you are able, your support would be appreciated. There are lots of amazing prizes up for offer.
Uniforms
As the weather begins to cool, we remind families that wearing our school uniform with pride remains an expectation. Students should continue to wear navy blue jumpers or jackets, which are available from the uniform shop. Navy pants, leggings, or stockings are also part of our winter uniform. Please ensure that students do not wear clothing in other colours, as maintaining a consistent uniform supports our sense of school identity and pride. If your family is experiencing financial difficulty, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help.
Learning Walks and Talks
This term, we commence our classroom learning walks and talks, along with focused classroom observations. The focus will be on reading—particularly word reading, phonics, and morphology—delivered through an explicit instruction approach. Our teachers are working incredibly hard to embed this evidence-based approach to reading into their practice, and we are already seeing exciting progress. It’s a significant shift, and we’re proud of how well our staff and students are embracing this important work.
Q Parents Consent
Q Parents Consent: Class Solver and Decodable Readers Australia (DRA)
In alignment with Department policy and the use of the Q Parents platform, we are now seeking annual, school-wide consent for the online programs and subscriptions used at Mango Hill State School.
This week, you will receive a notification on Q Parents requesting consent for two specific programs: Class Solver (supporting class placements for 2026) and Decodable Readers Australia (online home reading). Students are required to have consent to participate in each program. Each consent request includes detailed information about the data collected and where it is stored.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s year level Deputy Principal.
Thank you for your continued support.
2025 Premier's Reading Challenge
I am delighted to invite all Mango Hill State students to join in the 2025 Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC).
The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, from 6 May to 22 August. Enclosed is a reader record form to tally books read throughout the challenge. The forms are also available from your child’s teacher or the Hub.
To complete the challenge:
• Prep to Year 2 must read or experience at least 20 books
• Years 3 and 4 must read at least 20 books
• Years 5 to 9 must read at least 15 books.
Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2025 challenge is to encourage students to make time to read. Last year saw more than 216,000 children from around the state participate.
6 May – 22 August - Reading period for Prep to Year 9 students
22 August - Student reader record forms submitted to teacher
3 – 14 November - Premier's Reading Challenge Celebration Weeks
Book suggestions are available on the PRC website:
https://prc.median.com.au/BookList
Every student who completes the challenge, and returns the completed record reader form, will receive a Certificate of Achievement. I look forward to seeing as many of our students as possible take part in the 2025 Premier’s Reading Challenge.
If your child wishes to participate in the PRC, please return the completed reader form to your child’s teacher by the 22 August, 2025.

Online Safety - Parent/Carer Session
The internet connects us with the world, including family and friends locally and overseas, through messages, live video chat and even playing online games. Being online can be positive and fun and help children and young people learn and connect with others. But sometimes it can expose children and young people to risks.
We have organised a parent/carer information session led by ThinkUKnow – an Australian evidence-based education program led by the Australian Federal Police.
Date: 13 May 2025
Time: 5:00 PM
Location: Mango Hill State School – Wandani
The session will cover:
- What young people SEE, SAY and DO online
- The challenges they may face
- How to report and get help if things go wrong
Our students will also participate in a student session presented by ThinkUKnow during the school day.

The ready scale is a tool that can help us better manage our feelings and emotions. When we are able to identify our feelings and where we are on the ready scale, we are able to use strategies to make ourselves feel better and get back into our learning.
We want students to be ready … for the world, for play, for sport, for dancing, for life!
Reading at Mango
Oral language: provides the foundation for reading and writing Reading is a complex process that involves the integration of these components.
Phonemic awareness: the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) within words
Phonics: the relationship between letters and sounds used to decode words when reading, and encode words in spelling
Fluency: the ability to read with accuracy, automaticity and prosody; fluency is an outcome of the components of reading
Vocabulary: the understanding of word meanings
Comprehension: understanding the meaning of written text; comprehension is an outcome of the components of reading
Research has shown that these six components contribute to successful beginning reading. They aren’t sequential, the six skills constantly overlap.
How can you incorporate the Big Six into your everyday?
The hourglass is wider where there is more room for creativity. Let your child guide you with their interests!
P&C News
Hey Mums, Dads and Families!
Are you:
- Keen to get involved in the school community but don’t know how?
- Wondering what to do with that spare hour or two in your week?
- Someone who loves meeting new people?
- Someone who has a reliable work ethic?
If you answered yes to any of the above, then the P&C needs people like you to help us with our Canteen, fundraising activities, and our school community activities (e.g. Mother’s Day ad Father’s Day stalls - these activities are purely for the benefit of our students).
If you are interested or would like to have a chat about how getting involved might work for you, please email Belinda at PandCPresidentMHSS@outlook.com
DID YOU KNOW????
- Mango Hill State School has over 1570 students, yet we only have approximately six parents who consistently offer to help out? We can do better, so let's build our Team Mango spirit - many hands make light work, after all.
- Money raised through fundraising activities goes directly to the school, and this money is used to subsidise activities and resources for our children at the school. So, what does this mean for parents? If we can't conduct fundraising activities because we don't have enough helpers, then we can expect higher fees for things like swimming carnivals, school resources etc.
- The P&C executive committee all have full time jobs outside the school, so P&C activities fit around their already busy work and family lives. This can sometimes add an additional 15 hours to our weeks just because we're doing it without your support.
- The canteen and cafe can look to move our volunteers to casual employees, if this is something the team thinks would work for all involved. If that's not for you, and you are happy to continue to volunteer your time, we'd also encourage that too!
- You don't need to commit to a full day to be able to help out. An hour or two is just as valuable.
- There are no barriers to being able to help. There are jobs for everyone!
We would like to thank our helpers within our school community, MHSS, and Helping Hands for all the support they currently provide. Without you, we would honestly not be able to do anything to support our school community, and ultimately, our children.
Current help required:
- Fundraising BBQ on 3 May 2025
- Mother’s Day stall on 7 and 8 May 2025
Next P&C meeting is on 12 May 2025 at 6:30pm. If you have any questions/comments/thoughts, please come along and share. We'd love to meet and hear from you.
Mother's Day Stall
Do you have a spare 30mins to help on the Mother's Day Stall?
The P&C are holding there annual Mother's Day Stall on Thursday 8 and Friday 9 May.
We are looking for parents who could assist in selling and helping children from 8.30am til 12.30pm each day.
These are fun days and a great way to meet new parents.
If you are keen and available please email vicepresident@mhsspandc.com.au

Uniform Shop
As we head towards another long weekend, the uniform shop will be closed on Monday and will reopen with our normal hours on the Wednesday.
As the weather starts to turn it may be time to start thinking about your winter gear. We have not yet received our winter delivery, but it is on the way!

Learning in Maths
As your teachers have shared, this term the number focus involves working with collections of objects to at least 10. Alongside this work, Prep learners will be sequencing and connecting familiar events to times in the day and days of the week. For example, we eat breakfast in the morning, we finish school in the afternoon and so on. Talking with your child about what happens on certain days of the week and at times of the day can support this learning and develop the language used for sequencing. These include words such as first, next, then, after, last. Please reach out to your teachers if you need any further advice on this.
Attendance – every day counts
Last term the Prep cohort overall had an excellent rate of attendance and closed the term with an attendance rate over 90% - thank you for this. Daily attendance is expected and essential for your child to access academic and social experiences required for growth and achievement. If your child is sick, they need to stay home and rest. If they are well, they need to attend school. As mentioned last term, part of my role as Deputy Principal is to support regular school attendance. For students not attending school regularly, I will reach out to see if there are any supports we can offer. Please remember to reply to the SMS you receive if your child is absent and do not hesitate to reach out if you would like to discuss anything related to your child’s school attendance.

Nudgee Beach Excursion
This term, Year 1 students will be venturing to Nudgee Beach Environmental Education Centre (NBEEC). NBEEC’s mission is to challenge students to become environmentally and culturally aware; to be Nature Scientists.
This excursion links in with the Year 1 HASS unit ‘Changes, changes, changes’.
The cost of this excursion is $36.80, with payment and consent due by Wednesday 14 May. Please note that students will not be able to attend unless both payment and consent have been received. If you would like to set up a payment plan, contact our wonderful office staff.
Learning in English
This term in Year 1, students are learning to write an informative text about an animal. We have chosen to focus on under the sea animals. Below you can see the learning wall in 1B beginning to take shape. I encourage you to ask your child which animal they learnt about this week and if they can tell you something about the animal’s habitat, diet or appearance.
Have a wonderful week everyone,
Evan Barrett
Deputy Principal –Year 1

This week, we wrap up our Year 2 swimming lessons. I would like to congratulate all of our Year 2 students who participated in swimming for the wonderful way they conducted themselves each week. From travelling sensibly on the bus to following the directions of the swimming instructors, our students consistently displayed respect, responsibility, and enthusiasm. It was fantastic to see students trying their best, learning new skills, and having fun along the way!
Looking ahead, you will soon receive permission notes for our upcoming StarLab incursion, taking place on 26 and 27 May. Please ensure you complete the permission form and payment for your child to attend as soon as possible. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
In English this week, we have been diving into our Big Purpose for the new unit of work. Throughout Term 2, students will be exploring the solar system as they learn to read, comprehend, and write informative texts. It has been wonderful to see the excitement and curiosity building as we begin this new learning journey.
Have a wonderful week!

NRL Clinics
This week, several of our Year 3 classes took part in the exciting “League Stars” program, run by the NRL. Our students had a fantastic time learning and developing their skills in kicking, passing, and running under the guidance of enthusiastic coaches. A big thank you to our dedicated PE team and the NRL for organising such a fun and engaging experience that helped our students stay active and build confidence through sport.
Writing scales
Following a successful Term 1 focused on Speaking and Listening, our students are now diving into the world of informative texts. It’s been fantastic to see classes hit the ground running, already exploring our student scales with enthusiasm and insight. Research shows that students achieve greater success when they clearly understand the expectations of a task—and our 3C students are proving just that! They did an excellent job analysing an example text and identifying the key elements aligned with their scales. Well done, 3C!

Deputy Principal
Attendance
Daily attendance is always a focus for schools because we know that there is a strong relationship between attendance and academic achievement. Higher academic achievement both in the immediate (in 2025) and in the long term are achieved with higher rates of attendance.
As you can see from this infographic, Year 4’s attendance rate for Term 1 is just under that of the whole school. It would be wonderful to see Year 4’s attendance rate out performing not only the whole school data, but also being the highest performing year level which is 94.8% …. so not unachievable.
Italian – Term 1
Students in Year 4 have been learning about the Italian celebration of ‘Il Carnevale”. Students made connections using their own experiences and discovered the significance and cultural practices of Carnevale when they made and decorated their own mask. Students also used a short sentence in Italian to describe what their mask looked like.
Here are just a few photos of this learning experience:

It’s been wonderful to start our first full week back after the holidays. Our big purpose in Maths is to identify factors and multiples, and check our calculations. Students have been diving into factors and multiples using their divisibility rules and factor trees. We are incorporating learning about natural disasters into our English unit, where students will create a multimodal text on this topic to present to an audience. It’s going to be great to see all this come together over the term, and teachers are excited as to what presentations will ensue! Students are diving into their morphology and phonology work, deconstructing words to help decode and encode.

Uniforms
Year 5 have been doing a wonderful job with uniforms and correct socks and shoes, and it’s great to see the school jumpers out now that the mornings have become cooler. Please ensure your child is still bringing a hat during the cooler months.
Have a lovely week!
Greg McCallum
Deputy Principal- Year 5

Learning in Maths
It's been great seeing our students hit the ground running with their learning across Year 6! In Maths, our students have been reviewing and exploring the properties of numbers - composite, prime and square. They will then apply these properties when solving mathematical problems. Our students over the coming weeks will explore percentages and use mathematical modelling to solve financial situations. You can support at home by discussing percentages and if you're going shopping together - ask students about percentage discounts and expose them to the thinking to solve these problems.
Interschool Sport
This Friday, Year 5 and 6 students will be attending interschool sport. Our students always do a great job of representing MHSS by displaying the Four Cares and 5 Values while competing. I know that our Year 6 students will demonstrate great leadership on Friday. Good luck to everyone participating!
Graduation Committee
It feels like a long time before graduation, but there is a lot to plan to ensure our students and their families have a memorable night. I will be sending an EOI email out soon for Year 6 parents to join our graduation committee. Further details of what this involves will be detailed in the email. If this is something you are able and willing to commit to, we’d love to have you on board!

ANZAC Display
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mango Hill parent, Sergeant Peter Richardson, for generously setting up a detailed and extremely engaging ANZAC Day display in the Hub. Our students have thoroughly enjoyed examining the artefacts as part of their learning about the significance of ANZAC Day. The display will remain in place until the 2nd of May.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
We are extremely excited to launch the 2025 Premier’s Reading Challenge! The challenge begins next Tuesday, 6 May, and will run until Friday, 22 August. The challenge is not a competition; rather, it aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read widely for both pleasure and learning. Children can collect a Reader Record form from their teacher or from the Hub. Every student who completes the challenge will receive a special certificate!
Key details:
- Challenge begins: Tuesday, 6 May
- Forms due: Friday, 22 August (to class teacher or the Hub)
- Prep–Year 2: Read or experience 20 books
- Year 3–4: Read 20 books
- Year 5–6: Read 15 books
(This acknowledges that older students may choose longer, more complex books that take more time to read.)

Scholastic Book Club
Brochures went home last week. Please note online ordering only and all orders must be made by the 12 May. Unfortunately, any orders after this date will not be processed.
Also- Did you know that May is Scholastic’s National Family Reading Month. See how many days this month you can read together as a family and if you’re keen, check out https://scholastic.e-newsletter.com.au/NFRM2025 and sign up for their 31 day challenge! Reading regularly as a family fosters a lifelong love of reading in our children.
AR Millionaires
Please join us in congratulating Rohan 6H, Samuel 6H and Liam 5/6A, who have read one million words in AR reading. Their photos are proudly displayed in the Hub, along with our other AR Millionaires.
