On Tuesday March 4, our school will be holding a practise Emergency Evacuation. Student and staff safety is a priority at Mango Hill and as such, we need to be prepared for an unlikely emergency.
Processes to help create a healthy and safe school environment are an expectation of all schools. Schools are to implement strategies which are designed to minimise risks for both staff and students.
Please discuss this event with you child/ren particularly if they require additional time to process.
A Fire Drill will have:
- Loud and continuous evacuation call out
- Classes will be expected to move at a moments notice when the evacuation call out is sounded.
- The whole school will be moving to the designated Muster Area so there will be a lot of students moving in the same direction at the same time.
It is important for students to:
- Follow their teacher’s directions
- Stay with their teacher
- Stay quiet so they can hear the teacher’s directions

Care Class and Focus of the Week
This week in Care Class we will be focusing on Care for Learning by showing resilience when completing assessments. Resilience is generally regarded as the ability to cope with and bounce back after adversity. This can extend from day-to-day challenges through to life changing events. Being resilient doesn’t mean not finding things difficult or not getting upset. It means being able to deal with things that are difficult and move on. We will also discuss stress and reflect on ourselves as learners.
At Mango Hill State School, we have a variety of ways to celebrate success including:
- Student of the Week - On Virtual Parade each Friday a Student of the Week is recognised and receives a certificate linked to the school values. Commitment, Excellence, Teamwork, Respect and Innovation.
- Golden Tickets - Golden Tickets are handed out to students who are demonstrating the care class focus of the week or one of the school’s cares (Care for Self, Care for Others, Care for Learning or Care for School Environment).
- SOLE Sticker Chart – Students receive a sticker for the Care Focus of the Week when they are seen showing the weekly Care. Students use this book (below) to work towards becoming a Care Champion and a SOLE Ambassador by demonstrating our Four Cares.
- Brain Freeze Hang Out - The first student drawn on Parade from each year level will be invited to join Mrs Padgett for a Brain Freeze Hang Out. Students will enjoy an ice block and a popper while having the opportunity to chat with Mrs Padgett about their achievements.
Whole School Acknowledgment – Student of the Week
As part of our whole school acknowledgment system, we are proud to celebrate the weekly achievement of a student from each class, by awarding Student of the Week certificates.
The Student of the Week is awarded to a student who has demonstrated one of our Mango Hill State School Values and is shared each Friday during our year level parades.
Our five core values are:
- Excellence – celebrating success in academic, sporting and cultural pursuits
- Respect – treating self and others with kindness, tolerance, care and compassion
- Innovation – finding clever, creative ways of working
- Teamwork – developing partnerships, co-operation and collaboration for success
- Commitment – striving to achieve through persistence and determination.
Coming Soon:
In addition to the Student of the Week certificate, we are excited to introduce Mango Hill State School Bumper Stickers as another way to celebrate our students' achievements. These stickers will allow parents to proudly display their child’s accomplishments.
We look forward to recognising the continued growth and success of our students!
CASUAL CLEANERS
We are looking for more casual cleaners to join our dedicated team of cleaners in 2025. Shifts will be from 4.00 -7.00am or 8.00am and 2.00-6.00pm. You will require a Blue Card, and be willing to complete a criminal history check. This is a casual position, so the number of hours will vary from week to week.
If this interests you, please email Andrea Gleeson aglee39@eq.edu.au for more details.
The P&C would like to congratulate Rachael Rooks who was recently appointed as the Lead Barista at the Sole Cafe. Rachael has been a valuable member of the Canteen and Café for a few years and we’re excited to see her take on this new opportunity. We can’t wait to see what the future will bring with Rachael leading the Sole Cafe.
Please take the time to congratulate Rachael when you next enjoy one of her amazing coffees or delicious homemade slice from Sole.
Sole Café is open each morning for a pre or post drop off coffee and slice.
As we get further into the term, has your child grown? You may be looking at your student's uniform and thinking it's time for the next size up. We have all sizes available. If you are needing uniform pieces it's a good idea to bring your student with you when purchasing to ensure you get the right size fit the first time. If you are unsure if a piece is too big or too small, we can talk with you in store about your needs, are you wanting your uniform to fit "just right" for now, or are you wanting something a little larger for them to grow into over the year? If our uniform doesn't quite meet your needs, we can discuss special orders for you, such as making a smaller or larger size or using elastic in the skorts. Special orders are paid for when placing the order, and take about 6-8 weeks to arrive.
The uniform shop is open:
Mon 8am-10:30am
Wed 1:30pm-4pm
Thu 1:30pm-4pm
Fri 8am-10:30am
We also have a retail store located at 41 Kirby Road, Aspley. They operate regular retail hours and can be reached on 3263-5566.
We offer online orders. Orders can be placed through our website any time at www.wearitto.com.au/schools/mango-hill-state-school
Mango Hill State School - Schools - Wearitto Wearitto delivers high quality uniforms in a way that makes things easy for schools and parents. We create clothing for school, work and play. |
Orders are packed through the uniform shop during our opening hours and an email is sent to let you know when your order is ready to be picked up, or, if you'd like your student to bring the uniforms home with them, email us at mangohill@wearitto.com.au with your student's name and class name and we can get it to them.
If you need to leave a message on our phone service, please leave your name and number so we can call you back. We are unable to see the number you call from, so can only return calls where a phone number has been left.
Have a great term!

It is hard to believe we are half way through Term 1. I invite you to take a minute or two to reflect on how much your child has achieved in the last five weeks. We have seen so much growth and thank you for partnering with us in getting off to a strong start.
‘Visible learning’ is an approach used by teachers across Mango Hill State School. Visible learning allows our learners to see clearly what they are learning about, where they are at and what they can do to improve their work. It also support the language they need to talk about their learning. This occurs in your child’s class using a ‘Bump it up wall’ , along with a scale used to track progress and identify next steps. This term’s English learning has a speaking and listening focus of ‘sharing ideas about a story with others’. After 5 weeks of explicit teaching, feedback, and using the bump it up wall to support learning, our learners are sharing ideas by discussing characters, events and now moving into expressing preferences and making connections to their own experiences. Here is an example of a bump it up wall from Prep H, and Prep D listening to 'The Very Cranky Bear' with a focus on recalling events, as shown by the snip from the scale on the left hand side of the screen. Great work Preppies!

We are so so proud of our Year 1 friends and all their efforts to learn and consolidate sounds. At this time of the year, it is perfectly normal for students to be writing using ‘phonetic spelling’ and is actually an important milestone.
Phonetic spelling is spelling a word based on the sounds they hear. Check out some of the fabulous and INDEPENDENT writing below.

A few reminders for our Year 1 families.
- Hats, hats, hats! We need to wear our hats to and from school each day. When we wear our hat to school, we’re not only protecting ourselves from the sun… we’re also making sure we have our hat with us for playtime!
- Right place, right time. Before school, we need to be waiting in the junior under cover area. Playgrounds are off limits before and after school.
- iPads come to school each day, switched off, fully charged, and in our school bags. We unpack these from our bags each morning and bring them into the classroom.
- Water bottles everyday!

Maths – Data Work
In Week 5 students will be completing their Data assessment. Over the past few weeks, students have been working hard using a range of methods to collect, record, represent and interpret categorical data in response to questions. Here is some of the great work students have added to our learning walls.

Year 2 Swimming
Please be aware that your child is only able to attend swimming if you have completed the permission form and made payment. If you require a payment plan, please contact the office so that this can be arranged.
Building Independence
Now that we are settled into Year 2, it is the perfect time to start building independence in your child. This might be having your child carry their own bag to class in the morning, getting your child to unpack their lunchbox and water bottle independently or allowing your child to walk up the stairs to their classroom independently and waving goodbye from the Junior Undercover Area. Promoting independence helps to build confident and capable young people!
Wishing you a wonderful week 5.

Our Year 3 students have truly shone as outstanding artists this week! They had the unique opportunity to take part in a First Nations art incursion, where they worked alongside the talented artist Wendy Rix. Through this creative experience, the students crafted beautiful portraits that beautifully reflect both culture and the importance of family. We’re so excited to showcase their incredible work at the upcoming Art Show later this year—stay tuned for an inspiring display of their talent!
Science Investigations
This term in Science, our students have been exploring the fascinating way materials change state when heat is added or removed. In 3A, the students conducted an exciting investigation to observe the effects of heat on three different materials: cordial, butter, and oil. Using the Science investigation planner, they carefully recorded their findings, noting the changes in each material's state. Their hands-on approach not only deepened their understanding of how heat influences matter but also helped them develop important scientific observation and recording skills. It’s been an engaging and educational experience for all!

Deputy Principal
At Mango Hill State School we use Regulation Strategies, High 5 and our Ready Scale to help cue students into recognising how they are feeling and then choose appropriate strategies to manage these feelings and associated emotions. As you can appreciate strategies and responses must be matched to the situation and to the individual student.
Being able to recognise when feelings are becoming ‘big’, then choosing a strategy which works to help calm down is important. It also takes time to practise and to recognise our own body cues. But it is important for our students to learn this now and practise this now. Managing our emotions and having a bank of skills to do so, need to be learnt and become automatic responses to emotions before the students grow into adolescence where feelings can become even bigger and then into adulthood where as the saying goes…. “It is harder to teach an old dog new tricks”.

These posters show the words and strategies we use at ‘Mango’ and can assist you as Parents and Carers when helping and guiding your child make appropriate behaviour choices at school.
In recent conversations with parents, I have appreciated the way that you have demonstrated to your children, how home and school can work together in order to grow respectful and active future citizens. I have appreciated your assistance in reinforcing school values and processes. Please touch base with your child’s teacher/s or myself if you have concerns.

Here is an example of a student’s draft film review. Thank you to Collins from 4G.
In the past weeks I have been highlighting elements of the film review and how teachers are explicitly teaching and supporting learning through the use of a Bump It Up Wall. As you can see this example follows the structure as set out to the left. I can’t wait to see these reviews turned into presentations.

Academic Achievement
This week Year 5 students have started their speaking and listening unit.
The purpose of this unit is to share and expand on ideas and opinions about a literary text for an audience.
By the end of the term students will plan and present a ‘podcast episode’ for Year 5 students. They will share ideas and opinions about a literary text explored in their current unit of work.
A great way to support students in this task is to get them to share their ideas and opinions on books they are reading at home. If your child is a reluctant reader then you can still do this in other ways such as sharing opinions of their favourite songs or TV shows.
Attendance
A reminder if your child is absent to please use the QParent App to record the reason for the absence or to contact the office with details.
Thank you for your efforts in encouraging positive attendance across the first half of the term.
If you are experiencing difficultly in getting your child to school, please contact me gmcca24@eq.edu.au so we can discuss ways to support your child.
Year 5 Camp: Save the Date
In Term 3, Year 5 students will attend school camp at the Sunshine Coast Recreation Precinct, Currimundi.
The camp will be split into two groups (to be advised).

Speaking and Listening in Year 6
This week, some of our Year 6 classes welcomed members of the leadership team into their rooms to view the amazing learning that has been taking place in Term 1. It was fantastic to see the quality of student work produced in such a short amount of time. There was a lot to celebrate including students being able to identify the strengths in their work as well as the next step to ‘bump up their work’.
Student Leader Badge Ceremony and Halogen Conference
At the end of Week 3, we presented our student leaders for 2025 with their captain badges. It was a wonderful celebration for this year’s Student Council. I know that each and every one of them will do an excellent job at representing Team Mango this year.
Their leadership journey for 2025 began this week with a trip to the Halogen Conference in South Bank. This annual expedition for the Year 6 captains is always a great opportunity to help them understand the qualities of a good leader. I know that they will have plenty of takeaways to apply to their leadership journey this year.

Reading with your child
Did you know that The Department of Education has a dedicated page containing advice for parents and carers on Reading Through the Australian Curriculum:
https://det-school.eq.edu.au/reading/advice/parents-community
On this page, they remind us that-
Children develop their language skills through the language they hear and read. In the early stages of reading instruction while children are developing their decoding skills, it is very important that they are read to often, so they hear lots of new words and learn about new things that they may not yet be able to read about themselves.
Parents play an important role in helping children learn to read by both:
- listening to your child read aloud to practise decoding words
- reading aloud to your child to build their understanding of language and literacy.
For more details on how your child is learning to read and ways you can support them at home, you might find this page helpful. And remember—no matter their age, children always benefit from hearing you read aloud to them!
Library News
Check out the photos below of some happy Mango readers! While we sometimes borrow books to complete AR quizzes, it’s also wonderful to choose a book simply for the joy of reading or to explore a topic of personal interest!

The Hub is open each morning from 8:15–8:30 am and each afternoon from 2:45–3:00 pm. Please help your child remember their library bag if they’d like to borrow a book. You might even like to accompany them before or after school and choose a book you can read together this week.
“You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.”

Happy reading everyone.
Have a fantastic week
