Academic Celebrations and Explicit Improvement Agenda
The Annual Implementation Plan has a focus on implementing the Australian Curriculum version 9 (ACV9) with informed adjustments and effective pedagogy for learning and engagement. We will do this by driving the three priority areas as follows.
- Educational Achievement – Implementing ACV9 in English, Maths and HPE
- Engagement and Well-being – Strengthen and refine school-wide universals to support engagement and well-being
- Culture and Inclusion – Provide an inclusive learning environment that champions access, engagement and improvement for all.

We are excited to announce a new initiative as part of our SOLE Acknowledgement System – the Brain Freeze Hang Out! This initiative is designed to celebrate the hard work and dedication of our students in demonstrating the 4 CARES: Caring for Self, Others, Learning and the Environment.
What is the Brain Freeze Hang Out?
The Brain Freeze Hang Out is a fun and rewarding way for students to celebrate their successes with Mrs Padgett. Here’s how it works.
- Golden Ticket Draw: Every week, students who receive a Golden Ticket for demonstrating the 4 CARES will enter the Golden Ticket Draw.
- Recognition: The first student drawn from each year level will be invited to join Mrs Padgett for a Brain Freeze Hang Out.
- Celebration: During the Brain Freeze Hang Out, students will enjoy an ice block and a popper while having the opportunity to chat with Mrs Padgett about their achievements.
- Consent: Consent forms have been sent out via Q Parents today. If you child has allergies that affect them from receiving an ice block or popper, alternative options will be made available.

Care Class and Focus of the Week
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is Care for Self by ’Noticing my feelings’. We will also be consolidating this focus next week in Week 4.
A key aspect of effective self-regulation is the ability to identify emotions and feelings. Sometimes children do not have the words to express how they feel and may act out these feelings in ways that can be challenging. When we can identify and describe our emotions, we can choose strategies to manage them.
Here are some ways that you can help your child act on their feelings in positive ways.
When kids learn to manage their emotions, it leads to positive attitudes and behaviours later in life.
CASUAL CLEANERS
We are looking for more casual cleaners to join our dedicated team of cleaners in 2025. Shifts will be from 4.00 -7.00am or 8.00am and 2.00-6.00pm. You will require a Blue Card, and be willing to complete a criminal history check. This is a casual position, so the number of hours will vary from week to week.
If this interests you, please email Andrea Gleeson aglee39@eq.edu.au for more details.
Hats Hats Hats! Mango Hill needs all students to wear hats when outside. Students will be directed undercover if they don't have a hat. This often involves seperation from friends. Please ensure your child has a named hat. School hats are colour coded to the sports house your student is placed in, Barton (green), Flynn (blue) or Walker (orange) and your student's hat lining should match the sports house they're in. We have all sizes of hat available if you are needing a new one. The uniform shop is open:
Mon 8am-10:30am
Wed 1:30pm-4pm
Thu 1:30pm-4pm
Fri 8am-10:30am
Take the guess work out of it! If you are needing uniform pieces it's a good idea to bring your student with you when purchasing to ensure you get the right size fit the first time. If you are unsure if a piece is too big or too small, we can talk with you in store about your needs. Are you wanting your uniform to fit "just right" for now, or are you wanting something a little larger for them to grow into over the year? You can try on our uniforms and see what is the best fit for your needs.
We also have a retail store located at 41 Kirby Road, Aspley. They operate regular retail hours and can be reached on 3263-5566.
We offer online orders. Orders can be placed through our website any time at www.wearitto.com.au/schools/mango-hill-state-school
Mango Hill State School - Schools - Wearitto Wearitto delivers high quality uniforms in a way that makes things easy for schools and parents. We create clothing for school, work and play. |
Orders are packed through the uniform shop during our opening hours and an email is sent to let you know when your order is ready to be picked up, or, if you'd like your student to bring the uniforms home with them, email us at mangohill@wearitto.com.au with your student's name and class name and we can get it to them.
If you need to leave a message on our phone service, please leave your name and number so we can call you back. We are unable to see the number you call from, so can only return calls where a phone number has been left.
Have a great term!

Oral Language
Oral language (speaking and listening) is considered to be the foundation of the literacy skills needed to become a reader and writer. Engaging in conversation with your child helps them develop a bank of vocabulary and make meaning of the things they experience. In Prep we develop oral language skills in a range of ways including the repeated use of story books. This supports learning of vocabulary, concepts of print, letters and sounds and comprehension. Here is Prep B being introduced to Noni the Poni by Alison Lester.

Tips from the Literacy Hub outlining the best ways parents and carers can encourage oral language include:
- Talk to your child and listen responsively.
- Ask and answer questions.
- Read aloud to your child at least once a day. Good books expose children to vocabulary and sentence structures that they won’t hear in everyday situations. Research has shown that reading aloud to children is a major factor in their success in learning to read at school.
- Talk with your child about the books you read together.
Happy chatting and we look forward to seeing you at the Welcome Afternoon on Wednesday 12 February from 3.30pm.

High Five for being in Year 1!
This term in English, Year 1 students are learning how to present. The Big Purpose (or Learning Intention) of the unit is ‘To share ideas and express an opinion about a character from a familiar imaginative text.’ Below you will find a photo of how Ms Thomas and the friends in 1B ‘co-constructed’ the big purpose so they all better understood what to do. All Year 1 students will be receiving feedback and ‘next steps’ to support them in their learning this term. I encourage you to ask your child what their big purpose in English is and if they have a next step yet.
Each day before Year 1 students go out to play, our wonderful Year 1 team revise the ‘High 5’! This is an excellent tool used to support students with clear steps for if they run into a problem with a peer.
Important Year 1 dates
Wednesday 19th February Welcome Afternoon
Week 5 Swimming commences (Wednesday and Thursday, depending on your child’s class)
Thursday 6th March- Year 1 incursion
I look forward to meeting and connecting with you at the upcoming Welcome Afternoon.

Exciting Learning in Year 2!
It has been a fantastic week in our Year 2 classrooms, filled with curiosity, creativity, and plenty of engaging discussions! Our students have been thoroughly enjoying their English lessons, diving into stories and fairy tales, and sharing their thoughts on the characters they meet. It’s wonderful to see them developing their comprehension skills and forming their own opinions.
In Maths, students have been exploring number by partitioning into hundreds, tens and ones. Their enthusiasm for tackling new challenges has been inspiring! Ask your child about what they’ve learned this week—we’re sure they’ll have plenty to share.
Year 2 Swimming Starts Soon!
The countdown is on! Year 2 swimming lessons begin in Week 5, and we’re all looking forward to seeing our students develop confidence and water safety skills.
To ensure a smooth experience, please:
✅ Complete the online permission form and make payment via QParents. (Paper copies are available at the school office if needed.)
✅ Pack a swimming bag with:
- Swimmers (no light blue swimwear for safety reasons)
- Towel
- Flip-flop shoes
- Goggles (optional)
✅ Clearly label all belongings to avoid mix-ups.
A copy of the swimming timetable is below for your reference.
Reminder: No Ball Games in the Piazza
As part of our schoolwide expectations, we kindly remind families that ball games are not permitted in the piazza before or after school. If you’re waiting in this area with your child, please encourage them to remain seated and wait calmly with you. We appreciate your support in keeping this space safe and orderly for everyone.
Attendance Matters!
Establishing strong school attendance habits early is essential for your child’s success in Year 2. We understand that sometimes absences are unavoidable due to illness or appointments. If your child will be absent, please notify us via:
? Email: studentabsence@mangohillss.eq.edu.au
? Phone: (07) 3482 8166
Thank you for your ongoing support—we appreciate everything you do to help your child thrive at school.
Have a fantastic week!

Year 3 Art Incursion
Earlier this week, information was shared via QParents about our first exciting incursion of 2025. We are thrilled to welcome Indigenous artist Wendy Rix to our school for an inspiring art experience.
Wendy's visit will give students a unique opportunity to explore how First Nations people use visual arts to express their deep connections to and responsibility for Country and Place. Payment for this incursion is due by Wednesday 19 February 2025.
We look forward to collaborating on these meaningful art pieces, which will be proudly showcased at our upcoming art show later this year. Stay tuned for updates as our students bring their creative visions to life!

Maths
In Maths Year 4 is earnestly working on two Big Purposes.
- To create and interpret grid references using directional language.
- To identify symmetry in shapes and create symmetrical patterns.
In English the purpose of our unit is to share and extend ideas, opinions and information of a short film to engage an audience.
Following are photographs of 4I’s English Learning Wall. This will show the elements of learning students are engaging with in this unit of work.
Water Safety
In Week 4 of this Term, Year 4 Classes will begin their Water Safety Lessons. An information letter and payment information was sent home last week.
Please contact your class teacher or our Inclusion for Learning Teacher (ILT) Mrs. Jasmine Dean if you have any questions or concerns regarding this program.

Culture and Inclusion in Year 5
We have had another great week of learning for our Year 5 students at Mango Hill State School.
This week teachers were released to spend time working in teams to help identify students’ individual needs and how we can best support them across the term and the year. This has included doing a deep dive into academic achievement, social emotional needs and attendance. Please make contact with your child’s teacher if you have information that would help identify specific learning needs and learning styles.
Educational Achievement
In English, students have continued their work on creating persuasive texts.
At home, see if your child can identify three persuasive arguments for a familiar topic.
- Who is the intended audience? How can your child make deliberate decisions as an author to persuade their intended audience?
- What are the three strongest arguments they can identify?
- Can your child use ‘high modality’ to increase the strength of an argument?
Modality refers to the level of certainty in the language choices of a text. Modality is a range from high (for example, ‘definitely will’) to low (for example, ‘might’). Using language with high modality impacts the audience's response to an argument.
Georgie certainly persuaded me that I should take a winter holiday to the snow by using well-constructed arguments and high modality.

Deputy Principal- Year 5

Learning in Year 6
This week I’ve had the pleasure of talking to students about reversible and irreversible changes in their Science lessons. It has been great hearing students making predictions before carrying out Science investigations and discussing chemical changes and physical changes. Students have explored scenarios such as melting chocolate and mixing bicarb soda with vinegar. Be sure to ask your students about this and whether these changes are reversible or irreversible!
Cybersafety Awareness
Our students are regular and effective users of technology. This is a wonderful thing as it opens up a world of possibilities for them to be creative and to learn new things in interesting and efficient ways. However, we know that technology can present challenges when we are not aware of the potential negative consequences. One specific challenge for students at this age can be interacting appropriately with social media. During the year, we are looking to provide some programs to support educating our students on this topic.
Another useful resource is from the eSafety Commissioner website, with access to free webinars to support parents and carers: https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/webinars . Check it out!
Danielle Price
Deputy Principal- Year 6
dxobr0@eq.edu.au
This term, students from Prep to Year 6 are exploring imaginative texts in their classrooms. Some are enjoying beloved picture books like The Very Hungry Caterpillar, while others are delving into the cultural and historical perspectives shared by First Nations authors. And did you know that short films are also considered imaginative texts?
No matter what they’re reading or watching, students are learning to express their opinions about the stories they share. Why not ask your child about the story they’ve explored this week? What did they like (or not like) about it, and why? Encouraging them to explain their thoughts helps build critical thinking skills.
Do you have a favourite story from your own primary school days? Sharing it with your child could spark a wonderful conversation about storytelling across generations!
Hub News
A huge congratulations to our first AR Millionaire of the year! Nicola reached this amazing milestone on Monday of Week 3, and her photo will be proudly displayed in the Hub. We can’t wait to see who will join her next!
It’s been wonderful to see the library buzzing with happy borrowers over the past few weeks. Just a friendly reminder to make sure your child has a library bag to keep their books safe. This can be a special one from the uniform shop or any plastic or fabric bag.
Hub opening hours
The Hub is open every morning from 8.15am and until 3pm every afternoon. All students are welcome to visit before or after school to choose and borrow a book.
Have a fantastic week

AFLQ Schools Cup Trials (Year 4-6)
The AFLQ Schools Cup is a statewide AFL competition amongst primary schools, with Mango Hill competing initially in the Brisbane North Regional playoffs. AFL QLD coordinates the competition with all matches played under the laws of the game promulgated by the AFL.
In 2025, Mango Hill State School will again be entering a Primary Boys and Primary Girls team in the AFLQ Schools Cup competition. These teams are open for all students from Year 4-6. The Brisbane North Regional Playoff date will be in Term 2.

A final team to attend the AFLQ Schools Cup day will be selected early in Term 2.
Students interested in trialing can add their name to the signup sheet which is located on the PE notice board in M Block (in front of PE office).
Equipment/Uniform
If selected, a Mango Hill State School AFL jersey, shorts and socks will be provided for competition days at no cost. Students will need to provide their own protective equipment (mouthguard) and will require football boots (no metal tags).

2025 District Trial Nomination Process
- Step 1 - Trial Information will be placed in the MHSS newsletter. Parents can email Mr Nick Hills (nhill96@eq.edu.au) to express interest in their son/daughter attending.
- Step 2 – If necessary, MHSS will host a MHSS trial to select appropriate students for the district trials (normally completed if more than 5 students want to attend).
- Step 3 – Schools distribute the Trial Nomination and Information Form (with A QR Scan code) to their selected students. Families/students complete the scan code to nominate for a trial before the closing date – no students will be able to access this nomination Scan code after the closing date.

The selection of these students may be either based on past performances/current club form or through a selection trial at school.
If you are interested in your child trialling for Pine Rivers District more information can be obtained from the Mango Hill State School newsletter, with regular trial updates listed. You can also contact Mr Nick Hills - nhill96@eq.edu.au (MHSS PE Teacher) so he is aware of your intention to attend the trial.
