World Teachers Day
It's State Education Week and there has never been a better time to celebrate the incredible achievements of our staff, students and wonderful school community.
On Friday the celebrations will continue as we mark World Teachers’ Day, a day to thank Queensland teachers for the important role they play across our state — inside our classrooms and out in the community. This year as much as any, I particularly pay special tribute to our amazing teachers for all they have done to keep school communities safe while maintaining a strong focus on teaching and learning.
Queensland teachers have been issued with special commemorative keepsake ribbons they can wear with pride, and landmarks across the state will be lit up in honour of our dedicated, passionate and committed educators. I encourage you to download thank you cards, certificates and other resources from the World Teachers’ Day website, and tag your celebrations or messages of appreciation on social media using #ThankQldTeachers.

Day for Daniel – wear Red on Friday
On Friday all staff, parents and students are invited to wear red on Day for Daniel. The key child safety message on Day for Daniel encourages children to Recognise, React and Report if they don't feel safe. ... It provides a message of strength and hope that together we can make the world safer for all children as a legacy to Daniel and his family.
No need to send gold coin on this day.
Booklists and SRS for 2021
Earlier this week I sent you information about the changes to our Student Resource Scheme (SRS) for 2021. Parents of all 2021 students will be issued an invoice for $90 for the Student Resource Scheme to cover the costs of photocopying, art and craft supplies and eLearning subscriptions. Books and stationery must be purchased by parents. In 2021, the booklist resources purchased by parents will only be used by their child. We will not be sharing resources between students.
Booklists are below and are also on our website. You can conveniently order through Kookaburra and the packs will be delivered to your home. Kookaburra will also donate 10% of all sales to the P&C. Details of how to order through kookaburra are included on the booklists. Alternatively, families are welcome to source books and stationery from a supplier of their choice.
Election Day Sausage Sizzle and Cake stall
This Saturday we will have a polling booth at school and our Year 6 Graduation team, parents, students and staff have collaborated to organise a range of goodies for you to purchase.
Please consider popping in to vote in the hall and then heading over to the canteen and grabbing a sausage, cake, coffee or cold drink. There will also be some great raffles on the day. Please support this Year 6 Graduation fundraiser for the students. The stall will be open from 8am-2pm.
Please remember to be COVID safe when on school ground and keep 1.5m from other people.
Have a wonderful week

Focus of the Week- Curiosity and Wonder
Children need opportunities to experience wonder as a particularly special form of engagement. Curiosity offers so many ways for children to prosper in this challenging world. Wonder is critical for promoting well-being. We care for ourselves and our learning by seeking opportunities to experience curiosity, set goals and take risks with learning new things.
In the classrooms this week, some classes have created a “wall of awesome” to celebrate interests. Students have participated in ready breaks to cultivate wonder and get ready for learning. Students have used the “see, think, wonder” chart to open minds to wonder and curiosity and therefore encourage critical thinking.

Ditto Show
This week our Prep and Year 1 students had the opportunity to attend the Ditto Show. They had loads of fun but also learnt important messages about how your body can show you feelings, both good and bad, and directly discussed the children’s private parts and how to keep them safe.
The class teachers will follow up with some conversations about the important messages: If you would like any further information or parents’ resources, visit www.bravehearts.org.au and search ‘Ditto’. We are committed to teaching our children how to stay safe!
Instrumental Music Recruitment for 2021
This week we see the start of the Instrumental Music Program recruitment process for 2021. Letters have been sent home to all current Year 2 and Year 3 students with information about the program and how to express an interest in being involved.
A Showbie Class has been created for both students and parents to view videos of a number of the instruments which are on offer in 2021. You can join this class using the code FRWJW.
To apply to participate in the recruitment process please return the expression of Interest Form to the school office by Wednesday 4 November 2020.

Student of the Week
Due to unforeseen circumstances school school banking will be change to Wednesday 4 November (for Week 5). School banking will return to Tuesdays as of Week 6.
Our school canteen is lucky enough to be receiving a brand new oven to cook all of our delicious hot food items in. This will mean that on Monday 2 November the canteen will be closed due to the installation of the new oven. Please note that no orders via Flexischools will be processed on this day. Business will be as usual on Tuesday 3 November.
Prep Mathematicians
In Prep Maths, we are exploring addition and subtraction concepts. We are learning how two parts can make a whole. We use concrete materials and visual cues to help us to explain our thinking. Using mathematical language is so important when we explain our answers to others.

Have a fantastic week

Focus on the Learning – Shared Reading Learning Goals
We continue our strong focus on Reading in the early years and chasing our goals. In Year 1 and 2, one of our components of English and then reading, is Shared Reading of texts. This allows our students to be exposed to a range of texts and language and allows for an explicit link to the English Unit of Work, modelling and developing reading comprehension strategies. Much of our Shared Reading work is facilitated through collaborative learning where the students get to talk about the texts and their developing ideas.
The Year 1 Shared Reading learning goal this term is: To comprehend a picture book, identifying details about the setting and key events. The students have been shared reading the ‘Lighthouse Keeper’ stories and developing an understanding about where they are set and the problem and solutions in the stories.
The Shared Reading goal for Year 2 students is: To comprehend a picture book, identifying how the author constructs characters, events and rhyme. Year 2 have studied a number of texts for Shared Reading this term and are now reading The Highway Rat. They have been discussing the rhyme and the rhythm of the text and also identifying the techniques the author has used to describe the characters including their feelings.
At home, please remember it is still important to read books to your children and discuss the characters and main events of the story. This will continue to help them develop their comprehension skills and confidence when discussing texts.

Have a great week!

Year 4 Runaway Bay Camp Rocks!
Mango Hill State School students did an outstanding job representing our school at Runaway Bay camp last week. They truly showcased how amazing our school is and I am exceptionally proud of each and every one of them.
From stand-up paddle boarding to archery and team building games, students learned a lot about themselves during their camp experience. It was great to see their resilience, growth mindset and how well they were able to work together as a team. Even in the most challenging activities they continued to support each other through positive feedback and lending a hand. It was beautiful to see such big smiles. How lucky were we to be able to go to Runaway Bay for our first ever camp? Such special moments and I am sure they have all come home with some wonderful stories to tell.
Please enjoy these photos below of our our wonderful Year 4 students on camp.

Care for Learning in Years 5 and 6
This week I had the opportunity to work in 5D as they focussed on bumping up their analytical response to Storm Boy. Students were provided the opportunity to listen to the thinking of Ms Dixon as she worked through an exemplar and matched it against the scale. Students then co-constructed a success criteria for the lesson. Using this success criteria students then collaborated in pairs to bump up a piece of writing. Finally, armed with this clarity, students then started writing their own response. As a result of being clear as to the curriculum intent as well as being given the opportunity to collaborate, discuss and defend, students were completely engaged in their learning. Great job 5D!

Gala Day
Last week our Year 5 and 6 students participated in the final Gala Day for 2020. As expected our students participated in the right spirit of the competition displaying a great commitment to their team while also showing care for others through great sportsmanship. It was great seeing the smiling faces of our students as their excitedly told me about their results upon their return to school as well as the friendships formed. Well done Years 5 and 6.

Transition to Secondary School – Parent Forum
Thank you to all of the parents who took the time to attend Monday’s parent forum in which we discussed the MHSS and MHSSC Transition to Secondary School program. The feedback both schools received will ensure our program meets the needs of both students and parents.
Graduation Committee – Election Day BBQ
This Saturday the Graduation Committee will be hosting an Election Day BBQ to raise funds for the upcoming Year 6 Graduation. This week I sent everyone a roster for when parents have volunteered to help out on the day. Thank you to all of those people who have offered donations and assistance. If you would like to help we are still taking soft drink donations and you can also bake cakes, biscuits, slices etc which will be sold on the day (please ensure it can be sold in single serves and include the ingredients). If you can, please take the time to vote at Mango Hill State School. Come for the great food as well as to buy raffle tickets to go into the draw to win one of the class hampers. If you do attend the stalls please keep in the mind the following:
- please follow social distancing rules and stand 1.5m apart
- please do not attend the stalls if you have flu symptoms
- please wash your hands and use hand sanitiser available.
Have a good week

Day for Daniel
This Friday 30 October will mark Day for Daniel and our Focus of the Week to be introduced in Care Class that day is The 3 R’s (Day for Daniel). Please see the Focus of the Week for further details. We understand that some students may be aware of the tragic events regarding Daniel Morcombe, however the focus at school is always on the 3Rs. If you have any concerns regarding your student and the 3Rs, we encourage you to make contact with your child's class teacher.

Learning in Health
This term our learning in Health focuses on making choices that ensure we are safe and well. This week as part of the Health units, students will revisit the messages from the ‘Day for Daniel’ campaign, remembering to respect, recognise and report. As the term progresses, our Health units of work, which are based on the Australian Curriculum, will focus on our bodies, including learning how they change physically and develop emotionally. Students will consider a range of choices that are good for their ongoing health and wellbeing.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Congratulations to all of the Mango Hill students who participated in this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge. More than 161 000 Queensland children from 904 schools joined us in this super challenge. Our certificates have now arrived and will be distributed shortly. Even though the challenge has finished, now is still a great time to continue reading. Pop on down to the Hub (before school, at lunch time or after school) and borrow a new book soon!
Accelerated Reader
Congratulations to Om who this week reached 1 million words in Accelerated Reader. He has been reading and reading all year and finally reached his goal. This is a fabulous achievement and we are very proud of him. We have added a photo of Om to our special AR Millionaire display in the Hub.
Congratulations also to Isla and Axel, who last week both reached 2 million words in Accelerated Reader. This is an outstanding achievement and shows their persistence and commitment to reading. We are very proud of both of them and added another photo to our special AR Millionaire display in the Hub. I know they are both still reading and quizzing, so we look forward to seeing what happens in the coming months!
Great work Om, Isla and Axel!

Have a lovely week

MHSS Swimming Carnival Information: Years 3-6
Due to the increase in student numbers at MHSS, our traditional swimming carnival which was held for all year 3-6 students on one day was becoming unmanageable. Our goal is to ensure all students can participate in a variety of swimming races and have an enjoyable day with their peers. With the increase in numbers, this was becoming more and more difficult with the limited time students were getting in the water and the time pressure placed on MHSS staff.
In 2020, we have made the decision to split our carnival over 2 days. Students in Years 3-6 who are turning 8 and 9 years old in 2020 (Born 2012 and 2011) will compete on the first day, which will be Friday 20 November (week 7). Students in Years 3-6 turning 10, 11 and 12 years old in 2020 (Born 2010, 2009 and 2008) will compete on a second day, which will be Friday 27 November (week 8).
Students compete at sporting events, including at representative levels, in age groups, not in year levels. Therefore, our carnival days run to align with this process.
Below is the initial parent information for both days. Students will receive more information at school in the coming weeks. This will include a permission and race nomination form, which will need to be returned for your son/daughter to attend. There is no cost for parents associated with the swimming carnival days.
Spectators – Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are unsure at this stage if parents and spectators will be able to attend our two carnival days. There are COVID Safe Plans from Education QLD as well as the Deception Bay Aquatic Centre that we will be required to follow. As these plans can change quite regularly, a decision on parents and spectators will be made closer to the carnival dates.
Have a great week
